What time signature is this drum beat?
Danny Carey: "yes"
The time signature changes throughout the song. Also there is a lot of debate amongst people on the best way to count it but from what I have looked up the song starts off with a 33/16 then changes to a 25/8 and then finishes with a 33/16 again. About as far from a standard 4/4 beat as you can get I believe.
Exactly
There's so much Tool I'd love to see you go through.
Wings for Marie 1 & 2
The lead singer wrote him for his mother. Incredible. You'll also like The Pot, Lateralus..
Oh, the song the Grudge has a 25 second powerful held scream.
I would to see your reaction to the lead singers other band A Perfect Circle. The song Disillusioned is beautiful. It'll make you kinda teary eyed but it's not really sad.
Check them out and the Tool Army will follow.
✌️ 💕
@@glennl78 well the long build up section is in 4/4 actually and so are the choruses.
yes
Left arm hitting 4 or 5 Timba pads to his left, right arm going on 2 pads, 3 or 4 toms & the snare, left leg hitting the high-hat pedal, right foot hitting the bass pedal all at different time signatures. If he dropped his shorts I bet he can smash a symbol in a 5th time sig.
😂😂😂
🤣 to good
Smiling yet!
The octopus
😂😂
Danny is an absolute machine. Now that Neil Peart has passed, Danny is #1, IMO.
100%
Definitely!
Major influence I'd imagine.
I will say 100. Before Peart it was Buddy Rich. There is so many great drummers, the professor. Seeing him live and dropping my 7 dollar beer.
I love DC, but why set imaginary limits? Music is not a 100m dash.
THis man is 60 years old.......just let that sink in for a while ...god of drums..
And I believe this was either the end of the show or close to it.
The amazing thing about this? He doesn't play to a click track. He is legitimately a human metronome.
Probably why he made a mistake.
care to share with the class when the mistake was?
No mistake. He was hitting the last floor tom on his right. At first sight it appears there was a miss hit. However a closer look reveals no mistake.
@@chrispytelomeres9863 Hell, even if he DID miss the floor tom, its a mistake that has absolutely nothing to do with him playing to a click track or not haha. I went through and listened to the whole thing after he made that comment and nowhere was the timing off.
See my above comment. The guy I responded to implied by making his comment that a mistake was made that could have been caused by not playing to a click track. So a timing mistake. I asked for him to point that mistake out.
The final boss of rock music. You can’t count it but you know the beats there and it’s mind boggling.
46 & 2 should be your next song. Warning tho. Once you get hooked on Tool. There’s no turning back 🤘
@Jeffrey Dubloun Once you get hooked on Spleen. There's no turning back.
Tool actually challenges themselves by writing songs in odd meter and making them work. They have a whole song where the number of syllables in the words translates to the Fibonacci sequence. if you want to check it out it's called Lateralus.
There are a ton of amazing drummers in the world but Danny Carey is in a class by himself. It’s like there are 4 drummers playing this. Amazing composer
Next Tool reaction you should do is 46 & 2. They are the greatest overall band you will ever listen to. You will soon delve into more and learn just how great they are. Once you watch this one I have a group of kids who play this song 46 & 2 you will then need to react to that will blow you away. Thank you so much for reacting, always great to see you enjoying new music! Much love🙏🏼🌹💕
Please do the O'Keefe Kids Cover!!! It's so much Tool and so inspiring!!!
@@simonsays8208 Agreed. the kids version is actually a great way to experience the song
"greatest overall band"... can you people fucking stop with this horse shit... you guys are ruining tool for me (almost, but not really).... this is completely out of hand already...
they're awesome, let's just enjoy them... hyperbole helps no one
YES!
@Drifter11 right?!
The man is an octopus with 4 brains lol, the coordination that it takes to play this is mind blowing, great reaction, the only thing I'd have to say is please have the volume just a little more in the song please, keep up the great work!
Some say, he can play 5 beats at the same time but then he has to take his pants off...
Technically, he has 5 brains. All fully functional. One in each bicep. One in each of his calves. One where it belongs.
All of these brains have a totally decalcifed pineal gland.
I came here to call him an octopus 😂 🐙
lmao yea I only listen to tool on max vol
Haven’t seen this mentioned, but there are also a couple of videos of Danny playing that I think are cool. One is with the Kansas University band at a Jayhawk basketball game and the other is playing a Tool song called “The Pot” with a band of teenage girls. He exudes such joy in both of them and his smile is contagious!
Oddly enough, he can actually be a brilliant "conventional drummer". I have the feeling he's one of those drummers that could actually fit any kind of musical genre and excel at it.
If you watch during his solo again. He's subtracting 1 pad each go around. As an example he's rotating through like 6 pads, then 5 pads, then 4, then 3, down to 2 and then finishes on 1. It's friggin awesome!
Danny Carey's drum kit gets its own bus.
Tool are the Pink Floyd of our era, trust me we are really lucky to have them. Oh and please do listen to APC and Puscifer (The Remedy for a good start), James Maynard Keenan two other bands, they're wonderful.
tool then apc then puscifer.. imagine what the music would be if Mjk stuck to Tool only...
@@choppsuuey3110 You're so right, you just have to listen to the Contrarian or Grand Canyon to be all in with his style, the guy is a frickin' genius. As a french guy i'd like to taste a bottle of his caddeus wine too ^^.
Danny Carey, top 10 drummer all time. Incredible talent, incredible dedication. A master of his craft.
12:00 Not only does he operate the hi-hat with his foot, he also plays the kick with his right foot and plays with both hands on toms and pads. And to add to that, he basically plays in a different time signature for each limb. Thats absolutely a top level of coordination, only few drummers in the world can play polymetrics with each limb
He was 58 during that show, keep in mind the drum fills are improved for the most part, I’ve seen pneuma 3 times live and there all different . Which is badass
TBH people like me , fan since 94’ are lucky to have Tool in their lives 3 decades now, but there was a heavy price of waiting, hoping, wanting, for years at a time , new material. I’m old now , but I know for a fact I’m a better person because of this band.
yeah there are a few bands that did it for me. Tool is obviously one. :)
I'm right there with you, fan since the early '90's as well. Always waiting and wanting. Such an iconic band with an iconic sound.
they're* all different.
Too bad they didn't improve your grasp on punctuation. Also, I'm sorry that you endured paying some kind of "heavy price."
Please do more Tool! Love seeing the new discovery of this phenomenal band!
15:15 I love Danny's face right there just look how into it and happy he is!!!
One thing I love about Danny is that he truly enjoys percussion. You can see it in his smile while playing. Love his drum camera videos.
I love the smile he has at 15:20, when he knows he has nailed the performance.
Aileen and Tool. What a happy surprise. I'll say that my two favorite bands are Tool and Jinjer. Different sounds, obviously, but the similarity is that you don't question the direction they go. You don't try to guess where they're going. You just hop on board and go wherever the hell they want to take you. With Tool, I want to just lean back, close my eyes and take the ride.
i came to your channel for Rammstein but will stay for Tool keep the videos coming :)
Danny is a god but every single one in the band is truly a master of their craft & together they create some of the most intresting/complex/emotional/intense/beautiful/dynamic music ive ever come across. (just a tip tho to avoid common pitfalls, stay away from official Tool Music videos as they are wayy to distracting for reactions & also there are very few live performances with good quality, so best to stick to studio tracks or lyric videos).
there are allot of great tracks for u to journy through but to name a few > The Pot, 46&2, Lateralus, Vicarious, Right In Two
100% accurate. They are all masters in their individual crafts. Their precision, consistency, creativity, and passion make them amazing. I wish the put out new stuff more frequently, but I also would not dare rush their work...when it arrives, it's impeccable.
Well said.
You, sir or ma’am, have absolutely WON the UA-cam comments section with this one.
Spot on, deadly accurate, and perfect set-list of suggestions!!!
First timer here, I really enjoyed your reaction. Every TOOL song is expertly crafted and leaves you wanting more. I'm certain you would enjoy their song Lateralus. It captivates the ear and mind with groove and lyrical intrigue for the curious and hopeful. The Fibonacci Sequence hides in plain sight...that is, if you want to over analyze it. SPIRAL OUT!! Can't wait for more!
throw a dart at any Tool song and you'll never be dissapointed. Loved the reaction. Keep going with the Tool reactions, there is so much more to discover.
60 years old and still kicks ass, most talented band of our time...
You know... this "how" you exclaimed however many times??? That's what drummers including myself say and feel in about 90% of Danny's playing.... He is surely one of the greatest drummers of ALL TIME!!!
My favorite band of all time. Sober,Opiate,Stinkfist,Prison Sex....all good songs.
Hope you gonna do "The Grudge" by Tool soon. Stoked for this video :)
Wait... does that mean that Meshuggah - Bleed (drum cam) is comming soon? Oooo if so i cant wait for that one... that song is heavy...
what I love about Danny especially, as another drummer - his feel for a groove and how to perfect it. that long tom fill/solo part - and please don't understand this as a negative assessment - is in itself a very repetitive beat which by that wouldnt be so hard to perform, meaning the strokes he's hitting with both hands are basically repeating themselves. but his ability to move both the right and left arm across the different toms, keeping the overall pace and shifting intensity of the hits ... that is what makes this actually very, very impressive to me.
and yes, I havent even mentioned yet the foot work he's performing alongside with the precision of a clockwork :')
I love what he plays, my favorite drummer ever.
Awesome that this was your introduction to Tool, I was at this show! Listen to the albums for maximum quality, they don't have to many duds. Awesome bass in their tunes, and odd but accesible time signatures. All of them are pros.
I've been a Tool fan since their first EP in 1992! Their live shows aren't a concert, they are an EXPERIENCE!!!
Well now i think its only natural to check out their Sober (live pro shot) from 1993. It focuses on maynard(the singer)’s performance. And danny also does his thing too.
Fun vid. Maynard is a lyrical genius as well as a phenomenal singer. Whether it be tool or Perfect Circle.
Don't forget Puscifer his third band, which is incredible too and where he sings along with the phenomenal Carina Round
@@Vince-pm2ui I love Maynard, but honestly, he's the weak link on this album. And he's not bad....but the rest crush it.
He is 58 yrs old in this video. They call him the "Octopus". I am 74 and a 20 year uber fan. Three live concerts and they my I all time favorite band.
Now THAT is cool. Glad I went further down in the comments to see this one.
Great reaction video. Would love to see you react to more Tool. They're incredible. They'll grow on you more and more and I have no doubt you'll come to develop a fairly deep connection with them and their fans. "Culling Voices" off the same album is a great track for vocals. Am sure you'd love it. Enjoy the journey 👁 ✌🏼
When I watched this for the first time I knew rock was not dead. Seeing your reaction is entertaining. Cheers from Maine.
Danny the human octopus. His left arm is it's own living being and just does whatever it wants. Best band to ever exist.
Welcome to the rabbit hole known as TOOL! Get ready to spiral out as you become a new member of TOOL ARMY! The Pot should definitely be your next song.
I can’t wait to witness your trip down the Tool rabbit hole…… philosophy meets music
I see a Tool army on the horizon.
Danny Carey`s solo begin; Maynard just behind preparing coffe and some toast.
This reaction made me subscribe. You were appreciating all of it for all the reasons. I don’t think it’s possible to watch this and not be awed.
Danny " Octopus" Carry is a fan of NBA which i LOVE and He always wear Jersey of The city team were they have concert. He is f... Genius 🤘🤘
I am an old dude and it warms my heart to watch young people appreciate great music. When you said "how?" I knew that you got it. Besides being arguably the best drummer of all time in my opinion, Danny is genuinely great human being. Watch the video of him playing at a school talent show with some young ladies, it is so wholesome. Great video.
I've been playing drums for 42 years and I'm still shaking my head at some of the stuff Danny does in this tune. Dude is a cyborg.
He really is a wizard...that's the only word I can come up with to encapsulate his gift.
God Damn, i love you for that reaction! I realy have tears of joy in my eyes! It´s so great to see people appreciate them the same way, i do.
I swear this guy has four distinct sections of his brain, each operating his four limbs. They can operate independently or in perfect synchronization with each other. I can barely tap my foot in time with this song and he's that? Crazy good.
Tool is very much a drum and bass centric band. Adam Jones is one of the most fundamentally sound guitarists alive, while MJK chimes in after the fact with some powerfully painful vocals. Tool gives me chills every time I listen.
your smile during his drumming made my day. thank you
nobody brings you into a song better than tool. they grab you right away and take you on a musical journey with funky basslines and innovative drumbeats with odd time signatures. add in adams guitar throw it in a blender and then top it off with maynards voice co.bined with his amazing lyrics and you have something truly special. while all four guys are fucking monster musicians on their own somehow it all fits together. the whole is definitely greater than the sum of their parts which is really speaking to how fucking amazing this band really is.
Danny Carey is one of the best drummers in the world!!! That’s why they call him “the octopus”. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥☺️😉😊
Danny is absolutely one of if not THE greatest drummer in modern history.
mario duplanter from gojira and thomas haake from meshuggah get a mention, but fuck yes dude.
Matt Garstka too
Modern history from 1990 forward.
Every time I see this video, it never ceases to blow my mind. Carey's left brain/right brain is off the fucking charts!! Also, his attention to detail!! He is something....more.
Can't wait for this one🙌.. You videos are the best!! Reminder set🖖
Thank you for this. I've been a fan many years and have met Danny, as well as seen him preform live numerous times. I get joy out of seeing others enjoy my favorite band. 🙏🤘
You are sooo lovely!! I’m loving watching you react to songs and bands that mean so much to me. You’re truly great at this and I appreciate you for it. Cheers!
Subscribed for all Tool reactions. Army incoming.
your presentation is to the point, and honest and genuine. im subscribed before the reaction even begins.
Genius!! God given talents. So blessed.
I have to say, I have been in a dark place for what seems like a very long time, and to sit here listening to the greatest drummer and watching you react to this song, and just seeing a smile like yours, I have to honestly say, you have a smile that could brighten any dark world up. Thanks you.
10:13 I've been asking that very same question with that very same look on my face whenever Danny Carey is behind a drum kit for close to twenty years now.
Also, if you want to see/hear Carey blow your mind, check out Ticks & Leeches.
Whoa! I super dug on this reaction! Tool has been a fave of mine for many years and hearing your enthusiasm made me feel very happy. :)
I'll for sure have to swing into your Twitch channel sometime!
You should check out some drum playthroughs by evgeny novikov (the drummer to slaughter to prevail)
Danny is an absolute rock genius, hus mind and coordination are from another planet. This was absolutely amazing, i have watched it at least 50 times. I still get goose bumps every time. LOVE TOOL. Great reaction video and hope to see more of these rock legends.
Danny Carey is my second favorite drummer of all time…. He’s my # 1 favorite drummer of all time too, but also my second favorite!
I came for the TOOL and stayed for the awesome reaction. I hope you do more tool soon
I truly enjoyed watching your reaction to this video, to say Danny is a drum God is almost an understatement! He is absolutely amazing, both feet doing different things and both hands too, simply amazing. Glad you got to see it, what an experience.
Love the change in her face when she starts to realize like "yo what the fuck is this timing?"
My brain -> 😵💫
dude just turned 61 and he's still killin it like nobody else
We Tool fans enjoy watching the reactions of people who have no/little knowledge of the band. Your reaction has been ours for 20+ years. Welcome to the rabbit hole young lady.
he was also just a little under 60 years old in the making of this drum cam. he just turned 61 may 10th
Wow, I always thought that Keith Moon was the best drummer I've ever seen, but then Danny Carey blew me away, fucking wow🤟🤟
Never get tired of that's implied quarter note pulse in the into just from the timing of the drum rolls and guitar.
So happy you finally did this. I know I mentioned a couple times about checking this performance out because you do seem to have a passion for percussion. I realize Tool is not an easy listen for some people, but if you decide to keep exploring Maynard, Danny and the rest maybe 46 and 2, or Lateralus or The Pot might be worth checking out. Love you, love your channel 👍👍
I was really happy to meet Danny at a Rammstein backstage. It is really nice dude :)
Lateralus, Parabol/ Parabola, Schism/ Eulogy
I remember the first time I saw this performance and just sitting there being in awe and stunned and having to pick my jaw up from the floor afterwards lol. still amazing to watch this :)
I watched your Nutshell reaction first, and then this one... SUB'D!!! I love your mix of emotions and technicality of things. Almost like a good hype-man for bands!
I marched a multiple national championship drumline back in college in 2001 and 2002, and a couple of guys in the the 'line went to see Tool in concert during their Lateralus tour, and they came back to campus telling us about Danny's kit, and how at the time, and I guess even in present day if you think about it, how revolutionary it is that he places his hi-hat cymbal in the center of the kit, as opposed to the right side. Most drumset players cross their hands with the traditional setup, yet with Danny's approach, he's thinking differently, as that center positioning allows him as much power on the snare as he wants off his left hand. OR, he can switch and play the hi-hat leading with his left with his snare his off his right hand should he choose to do that. The only other drumset player I'm familiar with that takes this same approach, is Mike Mangini of Dream Theater.
One of the greatest to ever pick up sticks. Also have to consider the guy was 58 yrs. old when this video was made; he's the master of Polyrhythm and one in a billion.
I am so impressed that to recognize talent, with such depth and insight. Not sure I could have at your age.
i am glad you have discovered true musical genius.... the entire band are actual phenoms in their own way even all of these years later...
the video you reacted to here is very special to me not just cause it's so good, but because i was at the very concert this video was filmed :) easily the most unforgettable day of my life!! love your tool, a perfect circle, and rammstein reactions and im super glad i found your channel as a whole :D i can't wait to see more!!!!
Some other drum cam videos to check out are Tomas Haake of Meshuggah playing "Bleed". Very very cool. There's also an all female band from Brazil called Crypta, and they have quite a few one take drum play through videos that I highly recommend.
Danny best alive today!! This guy is always happy. Never see him not smiling and laughing.
I like going back and watching your response to great music.
when it comes to drumming, Danny is the GOAT. If you haven't heard it before, some people have given him the Moniker "The Octopus"
After you listen to more tool, come back and watch this then consider that Danny is playing every single one of those songs with the same exact attitude and lack of stress.
greatest drummer of all time. 4 dif time signatures simultaneously for several minutes. Not only nearly impossible...but takes ENORMOUS STAMINA
He plays what is needed for his band. Enlarge your scope and you will find in different eras there are many good drummers.
I love the addition of the heart rate moniter I've never seen that before
I love the way you break down the music I love the fact that you get into tool and so many other cool bands to be in my favorite band he just bring a different kind of perspective keep up the good work
Sorry if there was any typos keep up the good work I enjoy watching your videos
New TOOL fan in 3...2...1... great band , been listening for 30 years, they continue to impress!
on youtube there is one live concert of tool's that has always stood out to me. 1996, glass house. tool. punch that into youtube and you'll find the whole thing with the songs timestamped. it's unbelievable. back when maynard used to actually "front" the band on stage.
You gotta do "Tool - Sober Live (Pro Shot) Remastered". An incredible vocal performance on that one.
Watched this pov so many times and it still blows my mind 🤯🤌🏼
Swiss triplets FTW!! THIS ISN'T EVEN HIS FINAL FORM! And just a fun fact: He was 58 in this video. He turns 61 this year and hasn't slowed down at all.
