I cant listen to this song more than like once a year. Its too personal to me. My mother suffered from MS and was confined to a wheelchair for 30 years. And like Marie her faith in God never wavered. Her suffering finally ended 3 years ago this month. 10000 days is probably my favorite song from Tool that just breaks me everytime i hear it.
I am with you man, my mother also was in convalescent hospital since i was 14 from MS. I was 45 when she passed at the beginning of the pandemic. My mother was not a saint and I grew up in the system but I still loved her and all my memories even the painful ones are precious to me.

Without personally knowing my Tool Army brerhern, I do know that many of you have been touched by this work of art. I as well lost my own to a nasty cancer and I watched this woman of faith hold her own during this ordeal. I as well can't listen to this without weeping and hard emotion. 🤘😔🤘

I don't know if it's what MJK intended, but I get the imagery of Judith Marie claiming her wings and then just storming off to the remotest corner of heaven, not even using the wings that she earned. That line always breaks me.

Yes I remember MJK talking about how devastated he was when certain shitheads would scream out for the Pot, heckle, scream and laugh. It was terrible. I saw the song performed live in 2006 and I remember the audience being very respectful. It was beautiful, heartbreaking and gut wrenching watching MJK sing it, but in the end, I'm happy I got to experience it. Such a tremendous song.
@@spiderbass65 the only time i've seen them play it live, some jerkoff rushed the stage to stage dive. You could see Maynard wanted to just end the whole concert right then and there.
@@spiderbass65 there were some drunk shitheads, but for the most part people were just in awe, total focus on the music and stage. I honestly think that it could have been done in a much less produced way than it was as far as visuals go and be just as good.
Imo Maynard has a song for every stage of grief regarding his mother's trials.

@@neonom1024 I could agree with that. What gets me about the Grudge is "Saturn comes back around" (Orbital period of Saturn being approx 10k days) and obviously the whole theme of letting go.
The Patient also can be tied to his mother (I mean, the name says it all). From an interpretive standpoint, I think they can both fit.

I lost my son, the US Army National Guard Specialist, the warrior, to cancer in Sept. 2022. I see him at the Gates, striding past Saint Peter, demanding his due. He may have only suffered 200 days, but crossing that boundary is equally traumatic no matter the way. I love Maynard, and his struggles with religion mirrors my own: f*** the posers, they have their cell in hell sitting and ready for them in exactly the way the Pharisees got them. 💚

Did you read the backstory on this, Aileen? Congregants at the church Maynard's mother attended would give praise to her face, but then talk behind her back about how she must have done something wicked to deserve this punishment from God. A lot of Maynard's anger stems from their hypocrisy.

The unique hospital smells and those damn fluorescent lights tubes.They buzz and the light color is cold. The worst thing is that every time you see a fluorescent lights tube you're taking right back to that room. I feel that man's pain.

I know the feeling, just went through that myself with my mother. She was diagnosed with PSP ( a disease related to Parkinson ). She didn't accept her disease, and just to kick her when she was down, she had a stroke. She lost most of faculties besides her cognitive ones. She was trapped in her body. She end up asking for medical assistance in dying. My dad and i stayed with her till the end. The hardest thing i had to do in my life. Always loved that song, but as you said, now it hits harder. I'm sorry for your loss. It's difficult to lose someone like a parent or to see them suffer.
I’ve never paid close attention to the lyrics to this song before this. After listening closely to these lyrics for the first time just now, I’m a 53 year old man sitting here with tears in my eyes. And my god, the lyrics of that chorus. I don’t think I’ve ever heard such sincere, powerful lyrics in my entire life. Just incredible writing. This is songwriting at its highest level. Bravo, Maynard. And thank you for this gift.

This pairing song has saved my life on two separate occasions in 2013 when my baby died at birth & then in 2021 when I slipped into a Coma after having my six surgery for Bladder & Prostate Cancer.
Nov 10th 2021 I had life saving 7 hr surgery to remove all my cancer tumors & after the 7 hrs my body went into shock & I slipped into a Coma.
On both occasions 2013 & 2021 this pairing songs was the last I listened too & when I came out of my coma it was the first song I played in thankfulness that G♡D saved my life & I woke up from my coma.
I am very blessed & 10 000 thank you that I am still alive. 🙏🏼

I think this is simply a beautiful way Maynard chose to honor his mother, despite any theological differences they may have had. Like many, I too find listening to this difficult at times; and I'm fortunate to still have my mother. Keep the tissues handy..

Now, to further blow your mind; Maynard demands that the instrumental parts are complete to the point of final draft BEFORE he will listen to it to add his parts. They aren't allowed to make any changes after he's received it. 🤯 So they don't know what lyrics he's going to put to the music until he's finished.

Maynard and Tool are real artists. They make you think and feel things with their music that very few other bands have even come close to achieving. They are definitely a one of a kind and a once in a lifetime band!
I lost my mom to breast cancer in 2004 ... two years before this song was released. When this album came out and I learned the backstory ... it was like hearing everything I wanted to say but couldn't put into words. Here was an expression of authentic emotion from someone who experienced a depth of loss equal to my own. This came for me at a time when I doubted that anyone else could possibly understand what I was going through. No piece of music has been more helpful to lean on throughout my own grieving & healing process in the many years since. Eternally grateful for their genius and vulnerability in this track 🙏🏽 ❤️

I lost my mother to AIDS and saw her waste away. The lyrics cold fluorescent lights reminds me of when she was in the hospital and all I smelled and saw was death around me. This song always makes me tear up because it real.
This song always makes me cry. I always think of my mother. I havent lost her. But like Maynard, she's my angel on earth who has saved me from my depression.
This is one of Tool's most powerful compositions. Every time I hear it I can feel the emotion, and I feel the same way now that I felt when the album came out. It has true staying power.

First heard this as a teenager and barely comprehended just how powerful these two songs are. 31 now and lost my grandmother 2 years ago to cancer. The loss feels so fresh when I catch a memory of her, but when I listen to this I feel the same grief as the night it happened, and while it's painful, Maynard's music helps me continue to mourn when I need it. I used to think that grieving was a process that slowly stops and eventually people can think about a person without mourning again, but I've just found that the mourning never stops. I just live with it and allow myself to express it, even if only to me, when my emotional endurance fails and needs to take off some. These songs help me through that process.
I've thought about reaching out personally to Maynard to thank him for publicizing his grief in his music. But then I think about why, and how I might feel in his position. To be told that someone used my grief to cope with their own, and while I might be happy that something I created helped someone, I think about how selfish my thanks to him is. I wonder whether I would like to be reminded of this sort of eulogizing, and maybe resenting it in spite of why I might've made it. And after these 2 years, I've realized my grief, like Maynards--which now I understand his regret in making these songs--is mine to have and share with my close family. Still, I'm so thankful for this music.
Just want to say this is a truly magnificent and honest comment. Sometimes the grief doesnt go away and it is about just finding ways to appreciate it in your own time where you can control it, be a part of it and fully appreciate it. I'm sorry for your loss but I hope your ability to appreciate and allow your grief never leave you.

i remember when this song first came out and the concept scared me. i was always close with my mom. then in 2019 my mom had a double pulminary embolism that caused multiple strokes. from the coma in the hospital. to seeing her open her eyes for the first time. insane. a year and a half ago she was sent home without the ability to care for herself and we couldnt afford at home assistance so i offered to take care of her and learn therapy to try to help her. shes able to stand and walk with help now and every day is a new struggle but we try to stay positive and move forward. these songs hit diffrent for me now. i remember listening to 10,000 days and fear inoculum on the way to the hospital to visit her every day. listening to these songs are humbling.
That part in 10000 days where he says "your going home" is probably the most beautiful sound I've heard in any music

When you talk about the band crying with him through the instrumental, it just shows how incredibly genius and talented this band is as a whole. There couldn't be a better musical trio for this kind of music and Maynards poetry fits perfectly into their compositions.
I read in one of the many comment sections about this masterpiece, how MJK broke down when they performed Wings live for the first time during the 10K days tour. After the song all his bandmates came over and hugged him. It was so heartbreaking and beautiful. 100% agree with you. No other band could bring a masterpiece like this to life. There's an inexplicable alchemy between these 4 people. Really beautiful.

It's really awesome to see how the instrumentals affect you emotionally when you consider that Maynard typically doesn't even write his music until he's listened to the band perform the music. It really can give you an appreciation for how emotional he must have felt by listening to his bandmates play that inspired him to feel and wright the words that you just listened to.

The band writes, arranges, records, and produces the album 100%, and only then the finished product is given to Maynard, and then he listens to it and starts his lyric and melody writing process. Then he records all his vocals, produces them, and turns them in for mixing and mastering into the final print of the album. It why the albums take while to create from beginning to end. but cant argue with the final product, worth the wait.

I love re-experiencing Tool for the first time vicariously. Tool is one of my favorite bands, out of every genre I love, and I love pretty much all music, Tool has impacted me the most. Especially these songs.
Seeing this song live in 2007 shortly after my aunt passed from a long illness was like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. The band, the crowd, myself, were all one and I experienced it as that collective. It was an outdoor venue with the night sky, a cool breeze and thousands of sweaty bodies pushed together singing. I’m almost crying just reliving it.
What a gracious reaction to this transcendent song! My favorite line is:
"This little light of mine, the gift you passed onto me, I'm gonna let it shine, to guide you safely on your way, your way home."
What better tribute to her life than to express gratitude for giving him the gift of expression and creation through music and using that gift to honor her life and guide her home.
I always feel like this lyric is missed for its significance. If I remember rightly, Maynard was choir trained as a child, so his singing is her 'gift'. I love the double meaning of this little light too, the literal light of his gift but also as a nod to the children's song with that lyric in... I love this song so much for it's depth and emotion. I can listen in passing and not be affected, but if I sit and listen properly I always end up crying.
I was sitting in my car outside an Exclusive Company (R.I.P.) just after 12am on this album's release day when I first experienced these tracks. When the harmonized "You're going home" line hit, I instantly cried and got goosebumps. There are few artists that can bring out my emotions the way Maynard does, he is a master at it. Between TOOL, APC, or Puscifer, there's always a track that gut checks me into reality. I honestly don't know where I'd be without his voice, lyrics, and the brilliant musicians he surrounds himself with. Also, thanks for being real with these reactions.

I'm always amazed how they can use their instruments to sound like emotions or even actions like heart beats or marching armies.❤❤❤
Man I love this song, just hits too hard to home for me. My mom as well suffered through 13 years of hell here on earth with more medical problems that one should ever bear. She held her head up high like his mom, kept her faith strong just like his mom. One day when I get the strength to do it I will do a guitar cover of this song. Thank you, Aileen. Your interpretation and background was a perfect description. I was fortunate enough to see this concert in Stuttgart, Germany with only about 2500 people. It was mesmerizing! But it hit very close to home earlier this year when my sister passed away from a form of blood cancer that she hid her suffering from for many years. Your description of this being therapy is spot on and as painful as it is, it truly helps to believe that she earned and deserved her wings, just as Judith Marie.

I'm preparing myself to be emotionally overwhelmed...Again. Every aspect of this extraordinary journey of a sonic and lyrical masterpiece takes me to a different place every time!
My mother was in an assisted living home for 17 years after a dual hemisphere aneurysm, a stroke, and a heart attack. She passed in 2017. It’s absolute hell to grieve someone, even while they’re still alive, but this song suite always helped me. It. Hurts.
It's unbelievable how Maynard and this band have made us all part of their lives, I have never ever been so emotionally run over by music, I'm 55 years old and been a Tool fan for 30, and I cry every time I hear these songs...I know it going in and I go there any way, this is the most cerebral and intelligent band we've ever heard, TooL Army forever

I've heard these songs a hundred times, fully knowing their significance. When you got to Wings for Marie, I was taking breaks shortly after you'd resume from yours. Your spirit added to these songs was overwhelming, like it was my first time hearing them. It made me remember my parent's mortality, and I'm now talking with my mom about how her week was, when I should be working. Some things are more important than others. Thanks for this. You are a beacon of goodness.
Tool is one of those rare bands that transcends the genre they came out of, because they place that which is important for the song over the desires of individual members to show off for the sake of showing off. That's not to say they do not perform highly technical music, but Adam Jones' guitar playing never seems like it's showing off, or mindlessly echoing guitar playing of the past, but always feels intentional, and that's why he never sticks out in the song like a lot of other guitar players... he blends his playing with the rest of the band for the greater good. I think that's something you touched on when you were talking about the instruments "crying" with vocals, because everything they do feels intentional to the greater meaning of the song, and never as a way to showcase the individuals abilities or virtuosity... I think all this is why I can go back to older Tool albums and they never feel dated of nostalgic in the same way that a lot of other bands do, because they were never dependent on stylistic markers of the time, but wrote from a place of honesty and mutual respect, if that makes sense.
Not to get overly political, but Tool to me feels like how a democracy should work, a bunch of individuals coming together, and working together with the mutual goal of creating something worthwhile, without discounting anyone's individuality, but also without allowing any individual to dominate the process... everyone in Tool feels like they have an equal part in the process for the greater good, but are also allowed to shine in their own individual ways.

It’s interesting watching someone listen to this song for the first time and building to the “you’re going hoooooooommmmme” line and knowing they are about to be nailed with the tingles and tears.

This was just beautifully put by you. Feeling everything all at once. Lost my father to cancer when i was 13, 20 years ago. Listened to Tool with my older sister, got hooked. Maynards lyrics became a balm for the soul. Now i sit here, ticket for them playing in a town near me right in front of me. Here. Today. I didn't go. I didn't go because i just got the news that we just lost a friend. He didn't have to endure 10000 days. He wasn't even that old. This very same day i agreed to a date with the person that was abled to survive because i donated my bonemarrow, my genetic twin from the other side of the world. I hear the thunder rolling. Wait for the crashing storm. And the soothing calm. Feeling everything at once. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us, thank you for the words you found for this precious piece of incredible work. I love love love your reaction. My wife and my 2 boys mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2004 and she passed at home in 2011. We watched her get her wings and go home to her heavenly father. This song, every time I listen to it reminds me of that night. Thanks

I lost my mother after decades of fighting, before she succumed to suicide. This is my most favorite and by far the most powerful songs I've ever heard. I can't listen to it without bawling, but it's so good every time. No song compares.

Every. Single. Time. I hear this part of this song I start sobbing. It’s exactly as intense and emotional as the first time I heard it. It’s not just the lyrics. The sudden shift from a single vocal line to all those harmonies is so moving.
Losing a parent to a long illness is so hard. My dad withered away from cancer for a decade before he finally died. He was the only consistently reliable person I’ve ever had. I can’t imagine the pain of seeing a parent suffer for 27 years as he did with his mother and her illness.

This is one of the best reaction to this song. You really managed to delve into the essence of the song. You should give Steven Wilson's Happy Returns a listen as it may catch your fancy. Its from a concept album that is probably one of the most emotional album the I have heard from start to finish. Happy Returns is the last song off the album that usually makes me tear up because of the lyric. Routine is another song off the same album that is just as emotional, but its from a perspective of a parent who just lost their kid. Happy returns is from the perspective of a sibling writing a letter to their brother talking about life and the past, but the sibling never gets to finish the letter.
Another band that you may enjoy is Pain of Salvation and the album is Passing light of day. The singer/songwriter basically made a compilations of his emotion during his stay at a hospital for a illness that almost took his life. The final song which goes by the same name is a final goodbye to his wife of many years. You could say that the whole album builds up for that final song which dabbles with anguish, past memories, rage and acceptance of his condition.

I remember seeing them perform this song as 10000 Days debut. They started in the dark and behind a curtain and as Wings for Mari progressed the lights and visuals slowly started to showcase the band. Once it transitioned into 10000 Days, the fog machines did their thing and covered the stage floor which eventually went into the crowd. I remember looking up and they shun a green lazer light into the fog and the lazer then widened thru and across the fog which made it look like clouds passing over you. Meanwhile your hearing the thunder and that 💩 got me. They were debuting these tracks so I hadn’t heard em before but the emotion was so raw I got teary eye and was shook.
Stating her name is so powerful, they’ve let us into somewhere that we should feel very privileged to be.

So beautiful. I had the privilege of hearing this gorgeous masterpiece live in 2006. It was devastating watching MJK sing it because the lyrics are so personal, poignant and heartfelt. It's hard listening to it because you can't not tear up. MJK spoke about the regrets he had writing the song and being so open. I understand that, but personally I feel that he's given us a beautiful, timeless gift and most importantly, he's honored his beloved mother in the most amazing way. Beautiful reaction.
