I am the uncle-dan-golab And I love maps And this game is a true tresure trove **music** (Im too lazy too type the rest so just continue it in the replies)
I mean, I always knew that the older maps were generally smaller, but even though I dislike and even hate some of those maps, you have to appreciate all the tricks they do to make these small maps feel much bigger and allow for longer games (even though it is chokepoint hell sometimes)
I really like your honesty, when you say things like: "what I would call their 'actual sizes'" (1:45) and "it would still be bigger than dustbowl _in_ _terms_ _of_ _playable_ _surface_ _area_ " (9:17) There's so much sloppiness with definitions, and some people even use it for deception. Liked and subscribed! Also, how about this measure: The minimum number of characters (or cameras) you would need to place for every playable-area-pixel to be in line-of-sight of at least one of them. E.g. for a square map with an empty single room building in the middle, you would need three: Two at opposing corners of the house, and one inside. This could to some extent solve the problem of big open useless spaces making a map bigger. A computationally heavy brute force way of doing it would be to put stationary enemies everywhere, and see how many sentries you would need to put down to hit all of them. Where enemies everywhere would mean, say, one per square Hu, on a uniform grid. Obviously there must be a better way of doing it that doesn't use the game but works with the map files directly, I just wanted to be constructive.
A lot of the larger maps (aside from Enclosure) are large not only because of the sheer scale of them, but also because of the multiple levels and "dead" areas inside them, like the area by Spawn on Lazarus and Mercenary Park. The chances of an actual fight going down in those areas is ridiculously small, and people often opt to just set up by the first mercenary park point rather than closer to blu spawn. Honestly, while they're aesthetically beautiful, they're just plain useless and could be completely removed in favor of a longer respawn time.
@@heywaitasecond46 you can just select them separately in matchmaking by choosing specific maps. Personally, my saved settings only include DeGroot Keep, because - let's be honest - it's basically its own gamemode, albeit with only one map, sadly.

Uncle Dane can make something as bland as the size of a video game map extremely interesting and fun to watch Great video, fantastic pacing, it feels weird to compliment the pacing of a technical video, but it held the video together nicely.
Just knowing how big maps are in reality compared to how big they feel to us reveals all the tricks people do to make small maps feel much bigger, it can also show how much effort is put into maps (especially Enclosure where the final stage feels like it is barely played)
Uncle the Dane of the House Conagher, First of His Name, the Unsapped, King of Badlands and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Gravel Pit, Breaker of Spies, Father of Dispensers.
9/10ths of the time, I was thinking, "Oh, yeah. That makes sense." Sometimes, I would never have thought that a certain map would have the results that it did, but after being presented with the data, you can almost immediately figure out why that's the case.
You have quite a fatal flaw when converting kHu2 to mi2 and km2. You don't convert to the square, you just use the linear conversion. Actually 1 kHu2 = 0,00036 km2 = 0,00014 mi2. Same happens with mi2 to ft2 and km2 to m2. I thought 324 m2 is pretty darn small map, that's like the size of only two detached houses. Actually 1 kHu2 = 362,5 m2, and 18 kHu2 = 6525 m2. I'm not even starting with the square feet, trying to convert to one irrational unit (miles) was enough. Good thing you didn't do it to every map, that would have been useless and disinformative. Otherwise nice and interesting video ;)
@@BonziFedoraINC The estimates are off by a factor of like 20 so yeah it needed correcting. The maps are actually far larger than the estimates in the video, which needed correcting.
Perttu Ruuska actually his math is correct, are you trying to tell me that the average TF2 map is bigger than the maps in Fortnite? cause 6525 m2 would be 6.525 km2, and Fortnite maps are around 5 km2 so that they are HUGE so people have large areas to travel, hide and fight, TF2 maps are not that big, TF2 maps are not 1/10th the size of GTA V, I double checked the math, and if 1 hammer unit squared is equal to 1.904 cm2 then 1 khu2 = 1000 hu2, 1000x1.904 = 1904 cm2, 1904 / 100 = 19.04 m2, 19.04x18 (khu2) = 342.72 m2 or 0.34 km2
Has anyone pointed out the error at 5:48? There is 1,000,000 square meters in a square kilometer, not 1000, so it should read far less km^2 than it does, or far more m^2 Doing some checks it seems that the quoted size 1kHu^2 may not match up either and is off by a factor of 1000.
4 years later and I just noticed this as well. Dane is evidently not an engineer IRL, because those unit conversions are awful. It looks like he just took the figure in square kilometers, and then treated it as a linear unit. Divide 0.34 by how many kilometers in a mile, and you get his value for square miles. Multiply the square kilometers by 1000, and you get his figure for square meters. Multiply the square meters by how many feet in a meter, and you get his figure for square feet. If I were a teacher and this were anything but highschool physics/math, I would give 0 points for his answers.

His stuff used to be invincible.
Pokémaniac Guquiz Actually the reason he couldn’t take damage in his crotch region is because the Engineer has balls of steel that reflect all pathetic bullets.
Who said it was only his balls?
Pyro is Ness.

I don't play tf2 but seeing how passionate you are about this game is really cool. keep doing you bud :)
I mean, I always knew that the older maps were generally smaller, but even though I dislike and even hate some of those maps, you have to appreciate all the tricks they do to make these small maps feel much bigger and allow for longer games (even though it is chokepoint hell sometimes)
I really like your honesty, when you say things like:
"what I would call their 'actual sizes'" (1:45) and
"it would still be bigger than dustbowl _in_ _terms_ _of_ _playable_ _surface_ _area_ " (9:17)
There's so much sloppiness with definitions, and some people even use it for deception.

I think you've done a pretty cool thing for the TF2 Commun with this. Good job Uncle.

Just knowing how big maps are in reality compared to how big they feel to us reveals all the tricks people do to make small maps feel much bigger, it can also show how much effort is put into maps (especially Enclosure where the final stage feels like it is barely played)

Uncle Dane: Mr. Map Size
Me, an intellectual: Mr. Steal Your Aunt
Perttu Ruuska okay measure nazi
I mean it was a nice pointer, he took time to correct shit. UwU
@@VaasMontenegro12 6525 m2 is 0.006525 km2, basically all your measurement forget to square up the conversion factors

Has anyone pointed out the error at 5:48?
There is 1,000,000 square meters in a square kilometer, not 1000, so it should read far less km^2 than it does, or far more m^2
Doing some checks it seems that the quoted size 1kHu^2 may not match up either and is off by a factor of 1000.
Wait the average tf2 map is around 1100 ft^2? That's smaller than an average house lot!
Harrison Wang his maths must be skewed.
@@EddSjo or they are heavily and viciously using visual tricks... which makes sense, and to be fair, some of the distances you travel are that of a houses lot here in the us... if you're a child and playing a game with nerf guns and rules that they somehow all followed without faulter... okay I see the issue now.
