You should never clean an electronic while it's running if it isn't absolutely necessary. You could short something out. And also never turn the fan the opposite way. That can damage it.
Always unplug the fan connector when cleaning as air passing through the fan at high speeds can produce an electric charge damaging the console (any console) with a fan
@Biyonzo Yes, if you can get your fingers between all the blades. The GameCube, Dreamcast, PS2 the fans are all small. Those fans you probably need to remove them anyway to properly clean the blades and fan shielding.
Like Polar the Bear said. Never spin up a fan with an airduster or something like that. Even is the electronic device is unplugged. (Always unplug stuff if you're working on it). In some cases spooling up the fan can create electricity in a way the device is not expecting it and you can fry a component. You can use an airduster to clean of the blades but keep your finger on it so the fan doesn't start spinning. A gentle brush works better tho, you can give it an airdust afterwards but... Don't let it get any rpm!
I'm too afraid to take my PS5 apart for cleaning, especially the fan. I just use a pair of microfiber dust gloves and run my hands and fingers across the outer vents. It works like a charm, my PS5 still looks like it just came out of the box.

I assumed it was crashing due to overheating, and if not, I'd have to send it to Sony for repair. As a last resort before sending it in for repair, I took it apart and cleaned the fans and used a vacuum on those holes referenced in the video. It worked great. I still find it funny how easy sony have made cleaning this thing, considering the ps4 was so difficult. I also cleaned both my ps2 and ps3, both had a similar way of doing it but the aluminium panel on the top of the ps3 original made it difficult to see the internals while the ps2 just got you straight to it, but with the ps2 you had the problem that there were seemingly two parts to it, and it was difficult to get to the bottom of it, without having to disconnect everything. I'm happy that it's become so easy with the ps5 as it is extremely user friendly, almost like a pc.
I recommend not to use the pliers for pulling out the cable. You going to pull of one the wires instead if you lose the grip on it. It is way better to use fingernail pulling left and right of it.
While youre not wrong, if someone doesn't have the dexterity to use the tool meant for the action correctly then they shouldn't even be let near the device 🤣
Instead of using a tool that aids in accessing, gripping, and controlling with improved precision, I recommend you just grab the whole fan with your fist tightly clinched and yanked until it rips out. Never have to worry about dust again.
Good to know about the vacuum and screws. Def wanna put a skin on the middle panel. Even with a microfibre cloth, the plastic will still show micro scratches when hard light is shone on it.
Happened to me as well 🙃 used a hard microfiber cloth and scratched the top of my ps5 then I stopped after realizing it and maintained the middle portion . I got mad but fuck it it’s all about the console running! I think ima invest in the skin to cover the middle
Concerning forced air...if you flip the system over and repeat a few times you're going to get the dust out. I use an oxygen tank (I have cluster headaches) so the pressure isn't as high as compressed air and it works perfectly, just takes a little more time.
Harbor Freight has mini detailing vacuum kit that attaches mini hose with mini brush to any vacuum that has a hose, works great. Also cheap T8 screwdriver.
A small handheld, with a small tiphead, it really gets those smaller bits of dust outta there, but i have a series x and im just here because i want a ps5
I was highly skeptical of using a cleaning agent like Goo Gone on the interior of the console, since it can quickly and easily become a greasy mess, but I always keep a bottle of ROR on hand and made sure to clean it off as well as possible as soon as I finished each cycle of scrubbing on each scratch… When I was finished, I’d be lying if I said it looked 100% new, but I was impressed to find it did remove about 90% of the defects and what’s left is barely noticeable at all unless you really look. Also the Goo Gone didn’t leave too much of a shiny residue on the plastic but as I said I took great care to remove it with ROR oil remover as quickly as possible… Def took a bit of time and elbow grease and not a complete fix, but a great improvement, thanks for the guide
Just got a PS5 two days ago from now, very dusty since the og owner was a smoker. I am planning on cleaning the system fully today so thanks for the video!
Interesting. I’ll keep this mind moving forward but I’ve never cleaned any consoles I’ve owned over the yrs (internally at least) and they all ran just fine despite the number of yrs I had them. Had my PS5 for nearly 8 months now and hardly no dust anywhere on it to speak of since I use a very light dust cover on it after very gaming session
Thank you for posting this, I was honestly considering an air duster the other day. Thank god hahah, looks like I’ll get out my Dyson and clean up my PS5
Whatever you do DO NOT stick the straw from the compressed air can into the fan directly! The fast spinning( caused by air pressure) will break the fans blades if they come in contact with the plastic straw. I learned this the hard way. It’s better to hold the blades whilst blowing air into it.
It would be wise to not use microfiber towels or anything in that regard on the glossy part of the console. It will scratch that part over time and you may be forced to polish that out. It is the same issue with high gloss kitchensurfaces, do not use microfibres to clean those surfaces. It may go well for some time but you will see scratches sooner or later on those surfaces
@@Valereen386 try it with a regular towel with warm water and mild soap. Try to avoid microfiber, because over time it will damage glossy parts and create so called "holograms" , elliptic or circularshaped scratches. @@Kinsanth_ It doesn't matter if you clean it or not, these scratches come from the factory, I went to clean it today, I had never cleaned it and there were already these circular scratches, so supposedly they already come with these scratches, but people only notice after a while because it's not common for them to look at this. on the first day of use
Watched my friend as he blew all the juice from the air duster into his console, that shit started smoking. Word to the wise, never tilt the can horizontally, always keep it vertical.
Tilting/moving the can upside down will only cause the propellant to shoot out which should look like white gas escaping quickly. It also freezes anything it touches immediately.but it sure as hell has no juice and sure as hell did not break a ps5. Unless he’s done it to the extent it’s liquified and damaged parts which you have to spray the can for a while to do at least 5 seconds.
I use a small fan and just point it at the front of the PS5 about 3 feet away and it has been great I’ve checked and there’s hardly any dust inside my fans or the dust catcher
I use a feather duster to wipe the dust off the consoles. Microfiber cloth is nice but a duster works too but don’t expect it to remove all the dust off. My question is can any vacuum work for the dust catcher or specific vacuums? I have one with a nozzle but I just want to be pretty careful. Also, in case you stripped the NVME screw, I think I found screw replacements but haven’t had a need to check and see if they fit but from observation, it looks like it’d fit.

@Sue to win of course you need additional cleaning for the console but the holes are dust collectors and are design to vacuum the dust and that is confirmed from playstation devs. So maybe you argue with them about it but im pretty sure they know their console better than you.
Its nice that you finally can clean the fans "without voiding warranty". All consoles should be like this. It would have been best if you could also clean the heatstinks, but I'm not gonna complain. I hope Sony would give us easy access to the fans on PS6 as well. Maintaining (cleaning dust) goes a long way when it comes to longevity. Obviously same goes for PC and any electronics with fans inside them.
Your a god I was thinking in using the duster not no more lol 😂 thank you I mean we can’t always use the same techniques we use too clean our ps4s makes sense. I’m just happy I know how too properly do it when it comes down too that point !
That was a bit of a mistake cleaning the fan with compressed air and letting it spin. To save on the fan bearings longevity you should hold the fan in place and dust off the blades.
I mean correct me if I am wrong since I don't know anything about that but I don't think it's a smart idea to be spraying liquid into the console like that.
@@guthetanuki256 no, see you need to duct tape the vents and spray it in good. This creates a self fulfilling ecosystem where the WD40 lubricates the parts, and no dust gets in!

I wait for a really strong wind and then take it outside and just hold it up in the air. Works pretty good.
No bs intro, no ridiculous add, short and sweet thanks my friend
I use a microfiber cloth but the black shiny plastic in the middle still gets tiny scratches
It’s because you wipe down on it while it’s covered in dust. I usually get a wet microfiber towel and give it a couple of taps then dry wipe
Yes it does
And honestly, it's very much appreciated. Thank you for another helpful vid, John :D
@@TheMacAndDon I feel u. Good call, though. 👍
This has continuously appeared on my recommended as soon I got my ps5 and I’m appreciating it a lot!
Concerning forced air...if you flip the system over and repeat a few times you're going to get the dust out. I use an oxygen tank (I have cluster headaches) so the pressure isn't as high as compressed air and it works perfectly, just takes a little more time.
Can I borrow your oxygen tank sometime
For the screws. I recommend painting a noticeable dot on the top of the screw and it’s port.
Harbor Freight has mini detailing vacuum kit that attaches mini hose with mini brush to any vacuum that has a hose, works great. Also cheap T8 screwdriver.
Dude very good video. Subbed!!
For all my console care enthusiasts, what vacuum is the best for cleaning consoles/computers?
I use a small house vac with the attachment for the dust vent on my ps5
I use a shop vac, it works great
A small handheld, with a small tiphead, it really gets those smaller bits of dust outta there, but i have a series x and im just here because i want a ps5
Try a Handheld Dyson DC35 it is very Powerful will remove any Dust
I have micro attachments for my Shop Vac so im assuming that will be plenty of power
Thank you for this video. Short, concise, and informative. Now if Sony would just produce enough of them, we'd all have something to clean!
Same never opened ps2 ps3 ps4 and they all still run to this day. But I think the most important thing is have a clean environment
@@crazykenbei Big facts man. As long as the environment around the console is clean no one really should have to clean it internally imo
Right, folks need to clean there apartments lol...then you won't have the extra dust flowing into your PS5 lol...
@@blastu2fool exactly bro lol it's wild people let their consoles get to that point or any electronics really
@@crazykenbei the ps4 can be opened? Without damaging it?
Thank you for posting this, I was honestly considering an air duster the other day. Thank god hahah, looks like I’ll get out my Dyson and clean up my PS5
I will try to remember this in about 5 years when I'm able to buy one off the shelf at my local Walmart 🎮🕹🖥👍
If u don’t have a ps5 by now you’re a Pepsi virgin
This guy is the ps5 genius. Good videos and good work!
Whatever you do DO NOT stick the straw from the compressed air can into the fan directly! The fast spinning( caused by air pressure) will break the fans blades if they come in contact with the plastic straw. I learned this the hard way. It’s better to hold the blades whilst blowing air into it.
wish this video came out a long time ago i already blew air into the dust catcher holes
Me: 5 years laters. I can finally use this video I saved. :D
For me too
Great video, nothing but useful information. Much appreciated.
Then what are you meant to use?
@@Valereen386 try it with a regular towel with warm water and mild soap. Try to avoid microfiber, because over time it will damage glossy parts and create so called "holograms" , elliptic or circularshaped scratches. Also happens on cars when you look closely in direct sunlight, you can see fine scratches, which follow elliptic or circular patterns
He’s not the ps5 hero that we wanted , he is the ps5 HERO that WE needed ! Much appreciated gonna clean it in June .
Me who hasn’t even cleaned my PS3 since 2008: Nah, my PS5 is gonna be fine 😇
Absolute foolish mindset
Enjoy Ur broken Ps5 soon
@@nguxurr9667 My PS3 is still fine till this date, I think my PS5 is gonna be fine.
Havent even tried to clean it but now i know what to do when i decide to 🤙🏽
Watched my friend as he blew all the juice from the air duster into his console, that shit started smoking. Word to the wise, never tilt the can horizontally, always keep it vertical.
All I can think of is that double Falcon punch exploding computer gif 😅 oh lord
@@DaMorg3 it was awful. I felt so bad for him we pitched in and got him a ps5
@@Grognak148 wait were you there? I didint see you there. Hmm.
@@fuzzy3383 yea I was the can
Best ps5 videos i can find on UA-cam. All great 👍
I use a small fan and just point it at the front of the PS5 about 3 feet away and it has been great I’ve checked and there’s hardly any dust inside my fans or the dust catcher
I do the same half and a year and my ps5 looks like new
I use a slightly larger fan for mine and it’s been so far so good fingers crossed
@@shameluptegrow5845 nice I’ve used it on all my consoles just put a small fan is good enough it’s keeps the console cool and dust away
That will increase dust… 🤡 how tf does a fan stop dust lmao
I use a feather duster to wipe the dust off the consoles. Microfiber cloth is nice but a duster works too but don’t expect it to remove all the dust off. My question is can any vacuum work for the dust catcher or specific vacuums? I have one with a nozzle but I just want to be pretty careful.
Also, in case you stripped the NVME screw, I think I found screw replacements but haven’t had a need to check and see if they fit but from observation, it looks like it’d fit.
When you clean the fan itself, dont let it spin freely. You can damage the bearing.
😂🤣😂🤣💯
The bearings are what allows it to move freely, if it even has any.
@@adamanderson9881 You are right, but when you spin it faster as it supposed to, it can get damaged.
@@SprawlZz that's why you unplug your console & fan .... So the rpm doesn't exceed what's it built for in get damage... I clean my PS4 every month idk why but when I vacuum , dust & clean my room etc etc I also do everything else .. I know people who broke their PlayStation trying to clean it , just educate yourself in be careful .. cleaning helps a lot mine is over 5 years old in hardly any noise can be heard , as for my brothers it sounds like a jet engine because it's full with dust in overworking itself to maintain performance ... But this guy channel has a lot of knowledgeable content & easy straight forward understanding videos to help mostly anyone with a playstation !
It's a brushless fan. No bearings.
This is the way videos like should be made, no bs or clickbaity crap. Straight forward with excellent tips
Actually blowing out the dust isn't a bad thing. When I did mine it blew out ALOT of dust out the back. Then I would take the fan out and vacuum out the inside. Those holes on the system is actually designed to be BLOWN out not vacuumed. Yes I clean systems all my life as a gamer and NOT one ever overhead.
Actually that is not true the holes are specially designed for vacuuming the dust out the console. Sony explained this in there PS5 teardown video.
@Sue to win of course you need additional cleaning for the console but the holes are dust collectors and are design to vacuum the dust and that is confirmed from playstation devs. So maybe you argue with them about it but im pretty sure they know their console better than you.
@Sue to win Awww, it´s ok buddy, next time you will get it right.
@Sue to win oh of course you are......
@mypoohpoohface611 the designer's of the console know what it's made for because they designed it dumb bum
I’m doing this tomorrow! Thx btw your last name is crazy 😅
I didn’t know about the fan screws! Thank you cuz I’m upgrading!
Very helpful thank you.
I will never retain all of this Information 17 years from now when the PS5 is finally in stock, but it's nice to have on hand for now.
I’ve been using the air duster on the dust catcher this entire time 😔
Your a god I was thinking in using the duster not no more lol 😂 thank you I mean we can’t always use the same techniques we use too clean our ps4s makes sense. I’m just happy I know how too properly do it when it comes down too that point !
Will definitely do this wen and if I ever own a ps5
It’s amazing how access to the fan keeps getting easier with consoles for cleaning
That was a bit of a mistake cleaning the fan with compressed air and letting it spin. To save on the fan bearings longevity you should hold the fan in place and dust off the blades.
kekw!
@@saberspecter will it mess up the ps5 I just did that to mine and won’t get home till 2 hope I didn’t break it
The first thing he says not to do is what I’ve been doing this whole time 😭😭😭
Good thing I watched this I’m about to clean it and put on the black covers
Spray WD40 through the air vents sometimes, it helps lubricate the chips and increases airflow. Your console will run cooler and quieter.
100% makes the fans spin faster keeping the console nice and cool
Youre video’s are always on point!! Thanks!!
I mean I definetely won't go that far too clean it like removing the fan panel lol
Small tip: when you are blowing air into the fan, make sure you hold the fan. The gets spinning at an rpm that’s way higher than normal and could ruin a bearing.
I'm not sure most people are prepared to dismantle a console like that just for a quick vacuum.
Did you ever dismantle a PS4 to clean it? Shit was a pain in the ass so many screws & covers, this literally makes it a walk in the park if anyone is scared to do a simple clean like this your ps5. It's just gonna go back to sounding like a jet in no time
@@dippitydab8270 no I never did. I'm not insane....not yet anyway

If anyone else hates the micro scratches on the black plastic as much as I do…use auto glass cleaner and a microfiber towel. Wipe the towel in one direction as lightly as you can until dry.
Thanks for the tips man! 👍
Mr glasscock has done it again 👍

Thanks bro was about to go buy air duster
Thanks man! Been trying to play Elden ring dlc and it kept crashing! Checked the battery like you said and it was bad. Got it all cleaned out!
TIL about the size of the screws for the fan! Thanks John!!!
A regular microfiber cloth will scratch the center panel. You need a chamois microfiber cloth to do the trick, scratch free.
Stripped mine down few months ago as it was randomly cutting out with no overheating message. Power supply vents were choked with dust. I have not had a issue since. I was out of 1 year warranty anyways so was worth ago.
