This is kinda crazy, I've had my PS5 since release and have the original controller that came with it and aside from the touchpad feeling sticky when pressed I have no stick drift and my triggers still feel good. I've definitely far surpassed the life span that was told in the video. I must be very lucky so far.

Product codes are always worth checking and researching, even on console units. Hardware is often revised through a console's lifecycle, and more recently built PS4s in particular had more effective cooling and were less prone to failure. A similar situation happened with the Xbox 360 launch units vs the consoles sold a few months down the line.

Happened with the Gamecube too, although it was a much more notable change and you can also tell the difference by looking at the back panel of the console. On release (DOL-001), the Gamecube has progressive scan capabilities and a digital video out port for component video cables. When the price for the system was dropped from $200 to $100, that price drop coincided with the release of the DOL-101 version which omitted the digital video out port.

The only "non aggressive" way to minimize this is to exclusively play games which involve relatively minimal analog control. PS5 pads have been famously bad about this-why the hell do you suppose Sony went out of their way to address it? The only thing worse in the last couple of gens would have to be Switch Joycons.

Only thing is there is a difference in components that should last longer, however that is in no way a gurantee. To find out what controller is giving you issues boot up any game were you can change your sticks deadzone. Put them as small possible. Push in a direction, let go and see if there is still input in the game. If so, congratulations you got drift stick.

The main cause of stick drift on nearly all controllers are from games where you use the joystick switch a lot. On the better aftermarket gamepads that have 2 or more paddles/buttons on the bottom you can map the joystick switches to them and you'll find your controllers last a lot longer. The action of pressing down to trigger the switch put too much pressure on the two pots in each joystick and causes then to start drifting. Trigger problemss however are a design flaw/cheap materials

Why they implement those stick buttons at all, it is indeed putting too much stress on a sensitive analog device. Too bad many games can’t do without unless you can remap them. I sometimes click them by accident while running away in a tight situation, and some games have rather random actions bound to it, like open The map up in “how to survive. And that is the last thing you want during a hasty getaway

I agree with everything you said. It’s difficult to make a long-lasting potentiometer for small electronics that go through this kind of wear.
My wife uses the Switch Pro Controller and she had drift problems after a year. I play more than her and only use the Joy-Cons (better if you have bigger hands), but never had drift problems. And sometimes I hit those analog sticks HARD. Fixing the drift was simple: I only had to remove and clean the analog sensor wheels, and reinstall them.
What I’m trying to say is no controller is free from these issues.

It's not guaranteed you'll have problems, some analogs have the issue day 1. Though over time the analogs will naturally wear out. Also most games naturally have a dead zone for analogs to provide a bit of protection from stick drift. CoD allows you to adjust it manually and generally after about 2 months of playing say warzone you'll need to adjust it as long as you use the advanced movement techniques as it will absolutely wear out the analogs.

Most likely doesn't mean that it will happen to every old controller. It's just not protected from some dmg/dust etc. that they didn't notice while testing it but some people experienced them often enough to improve new versions and avoid those issues in future. There might be various reason why the issues occurs and why they don't in some cases and it's useful video to keep in mind more for people who think about buying new controller/console to protect themselves from possible (not guaranteed) issues. If the issues were constant and would occur in every old controller or most of them and would cause really bad experience Sony in the greediest scenario would take the defected old version off the marked and replace them with new ones avoiding scandals.

At that point, why did they even make this remote? If it's introducing an issue that hasn't shown up before in the previous console generations of similar consoles (switch gets a pass given the highly experimental nature of its remotes, and ease of fix, given cardboard can be found basically everywhere in 1mm thickness), why bother with it rather than say the xbox series x, it's competitor with way less issues? Just saying, they're shooting themselves in the foot, and I wouldn't be surprised if xbox finally outsold Sony for a generation, or at least half of one.

The most likely thing is just a bad regional batch of PS5 controllers that exhibit this behaviour. I've had my controller since release and it still functions perfectly. The adaptive trigger feel a tad loose, but not to the point they feel defective. They went from feeling way to hard to push to a generic gamepad. As a side note, I don't own a PS5. I had problems with one or two of my Xbox360 controllers but they were used extremely heavily, and some of my older ones were abused. The last 360 controller I had I didn't abuse but was still under extreme use so it had pretty bad drift.
Then, more recently, my left Joycon started drifting a little just before I sold it and I haven't gone back to the Switch since.

Backpaddles should completely replace L3/R3 in my humble opinion. I was wondering if there was a way to tell the new controllers from the old other than buying one of those obnoxious new colors.
I purchased 2 controllers with my console in a bundle around the release date of the PS5. Unfortunately BOTH of my controllers are now exhibiting stick drift. I treat my controllers very good and dont rough handle them. So it was very disappointing when I started seeing stick drift. I am now in the market for a new controller since its been over a year and I believe my PS5 and accessories are out of warranty (purchased holiday 2020). I would like a white controller or another black controller to go with my black cover plates. It's great to know that I can look on the back at the FCC ID and check if it is the new version.
