As with all things in life, you always are sure you will have the time to do all the things your heart desires. I love Tom Petty and always thought I would see him “sometime”. That sometime never came because he was taken from us way too soon. I know all the folks reading this are probably younger than me…..don’t wait for that “sometime”
I feel the same……never put things off, you may not get another chance. Wish I’d learned that lesson when I was young, always thought I had plenty of time……..but the clock is always ticking !!!
I only got to see Tom Petty once and that was in 2015 when my hubby and I took our teenaged son & daughter. We had amazing floor tickets and my kids were just blown away with Tom and they knew all his songs as they grew up listening to classic rock. I wish I could've seen him at least one more time before he passed - I bawled the day he died as I felt like I had lost a friend...
Saw Tom in 2014, had a chance to see him in 2017 but wasn’t able to go. There was no next time. I’ll always remember where I was when the world received the terrible news. RIP Music Man.
Last year, my husband, knowing his time was shortened due to COPD, carved a sign and hung it in his workshop garage. When he passed away Feb 2021, I took it down and have it with me always. It said "Learning to Fly." Robbie, You've earned your wings...fly free, my love. Fly free.
Funny enough that I didn't cry as much when Tom Petty died in comparison to listening to this rendition of Learning to fly while reading your words. Hope you are coping with your loss.
I was lucky to see him live. My friend got free tickets. She came and woke me up and said "We're going to see Tom Petty right now." It was a beautiful concert. Thank you, Tom.
I'm sure it's been said, but to have tens of thousands sing your music to you - allowing you to back them up - had to have been a deeply gratifying experience for him.
Having Stevie Nicks as backup singer, sums it all for how good he was. Amazing song from an even more amazing artist. Hello from a far far away country.
Tom I miss you Thank you for coming to Bismarck on the Lost Cities Tour And thank you HeartBreakers for being there for him I am leaning to fly...and I will gain wings...😘
God I hope that man knew how much he was loved. Not that I knew him personally, but through his music I fell in love with the man. He had a way of singing right to your soul. Corny, yes, but that's how he made me feel. Still does. I feel his loss keenly, but he will live on forever in his music.
This gave me goosebumps, listening to everyone singing. Then they started clapping and getting louder, almost like they rehearsed this. That's when you know you're in sync with the crowd. So good.
This song reminds me of when I saw him in 2015 and I have a video of my 16 year old daughter & I singing this song along with the crowd. It still gives me chills to this very day whenever I hear the live version...
I was Tom's neighbor back in the early 2000s. Super Kool dude. I was bringing in my garbage containers in one afternoon when I saw him walking his dog and he said, "Where's Chase? Chase was our Shitzu who unfortunately passed away recently, but was a hit in the community back then. Chase was that pet who always made a point to sniff, bark, pee, and poo and everyone's lawn on the street.😅
Beautiful. Brings me close to tears no matter how many times I listen to this performance. He has the voice of a child, which somehow makes this all the more poignant. RIP Tom.
"Southern Accent" brings me tears unlike any other song Tom Petty does. It really hits a soft vulnerable spot in my heart. Losing Mr. Petty was a hard hit! R.I.P.
Almost every time we ask our Facebook communities for songs that have helped them through depression or a particularly hard time in life, someone brings up Tom Petty. No, music can’t cure a mental anguish or make hard times go away, but it certainly can help guide us through or at least provide moments of comfort. For many, Petty did this. As one friend put it, “He is the only musician I have ever listened to that made me feel like he was singing about my life.”
I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Vancouver months before he died, not only was the second hand smoke worth it, the acoustic version of this song has stuck with me ever since. I don’t think this version is appreciated as much as it should be and perhaps that’s because he did it this way live and the radio only plays the album version. Man I wish I could see him live one more time, maybe it was meant to be this way. So sad, but makes me so happy I got to be there.
It is damn near impossible to play guitar with a set of wings. The feathers muffle the strings and it's hard to "feather" a chord and have it sound decent. Holding on to a pick is very difficult as well and it usually ends up on the floor and then you have to start playing "feather style guitar".
This concert was shot by famed director Peter Bogdonovich as part of a documentary he did on Petty called "Running Down a Dream." Well worth watching if you have not seen it. Petty's liife, from humble nobody in Gainesville Fla to international rock star, was truly remarkable and it was well covered by this film. One of the best rock star documentaries I have ever seen.
To be at a concert that captured that kind of magic is if you’re lucky happens once in your lifetime. I’m 76 and once at state college in San Francisco in the late 60’s the Chamber bros played ( Time ). This audience reminds me of that. It’s something you just can’t forget.
just found this. been a big Petty fan since way back. this is a beautiful version of this song. Acoustic. Slower pace. absolutely fine. damn I miss this guy. well, here we are two years later and this is still a masterpiece.
No one ever mentions what dandies they all were. Silk shirts, scarves, vests, blazers, cool hats. Such a difference from everyone else wearing t-shirts and jeans - not that there’s anything wrong with that. I just love seeing these videos, including shows I attended. TP and the Heartbreakers always had this elegant, rock n’ roll look and I loved it.
Yes people Tom Petty was the real deal loving rocker. I got my first chance to see Tom play in 2017 Ottawa Bluesfest. After so many years away from coming to our city. I'm so grateful to see the Heartbreakers for my first and only time Will miss hearing all those new tunes. But, won't stop listening to the old 🎶🎵🎼🎸♥R.I.P Tom. Rick from Ottawa
This whole concert was awesome &the documentary on the band was fantastic. As soon as it came out I ran out and bought it, but it's also sad just to think he's not with us anymore.
Was in the 6th row and sang every song and Tom was right there the whole time,so close you feel like you could reach out and touch him..Will always remember this special moment
I could listen to this over and over again. IMHO this was an above average recorded song that was elevated to something far more amazing live. What an experience for the audience!
I loved Tom Petty so much, I listen to his SiriusXM channel all the time, it helps to see beautiful Tom and Stevie & I need comforting so much right now, my mom found her wings, less then two weeks ago, she is flying with the angels 😇 now. I miss her desperately & my poor papa misses his soulmate.❤

One thing about "before my time"..... The music lives on for everyone to enjoy. Never get stuck in generational music. I grew up with Elvis, moving on to Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Beatles, The Great Tom Petty and continuing to love the Cure, Brian Fallon, Dave Matthews, and so many not mentioned. Favorite who I follow: Pearl Jam The music never stops.

This was played at my friend's funeral last year. This exact live version and it was so emotional and beautiful.
What a wonderful piece to remember someone. I’m so sorry about your friend.
Perfect choice.
I want this exact version at whatever service my family decides to have after I pass as well. I LOVE it.
I am sorry about your friend! When i go to rest I would like this to be played as well! This and music IS my church. This IS fellowship. ❤️
R.I.P. to your friend. Was this his or her favorite song?
The pure and absolute joy of an artist connected to his audience. Live music at its best, by one of the best ever.
