My late husband adored Peter Gabriel. He died aged 31. I’m nearly seventy, but this binds us forever together. He is the young Peter. He never lived to be the older version. RIP my love and thank you for the beautiful memories and two beautiful children

Our youngest son had a rough start in life and had to spend 5 days in nicu before he got strong enough to go home with us and his twin brother. During those days, we were all still in the hospital and as I knew his feeding schedule I went to check every time I could, or feed him myself. Day and night. Every day, every night. On the morning rounds of the last day, I was told he was good to go if I was confident about getting him fed sufficiently. I bursted in tears of joy like a kid. We got him checked out and I was allowed to roll him over to the newborns department where my wife and the twin brother were waiting for me to get back. I opened the door and said 'honey grab your things, I've come to take you home' while I rolled in our youngest behind me. Good phrase so I thought. So, after all the paperwork was done and we got in the car, this song just so happened to come on the radio. Kids are almost 2 years old now and perfectly healthy, but the song still gets me goosebumps and a tear in my eye.
If there was an editing oscar for music videos, the person who put this together should have gotten it. It is flawless. I have always loved this song, this video just makes me love it more.

That's why I like youtube so much because I get to decide what I listen to and Gabriel is always on the top of my best 10. His voice is still rich and strong at a much older age than most.

In the late 1970s Peter Gabriel performed in Stockholm on the stage of the Gröna Lund amusement park. I had just bought his first record and liked it very much. The gig was fantastic but later on when I went to my work at the Grand Hotel Stockholm where I worked in Room Service I got an order and it turned out it was PG´s room so I actually could thank him in person for the show. @@Virgovixen10 Pardon my intrusion, but I do believe you MAY be feeling that way again now? You sound exactly like me back then, looking foward to "feeling that way again" in the very near future again, bouncing around the after-school empty living room carpeted with some discarded pieces we found by the sides of the road. We felt like kings and the carpet was MAGICAL and we were just FLYING through all space and all eternity ... grooving to the beat of Mr. Gabriel's genius. We did not know enough to be afraid of jack. Not during the bouncing off the wall sessions. We flew up out of the night time of our Day Time with that great EAGLE taking us up up into our highest Aspirations!!!!!!! Trust me. Virgo Vixen, you WILL get your wish and FEEL THAT WAY again. Over and over and over. In your far far away future. And future is always far far away. Now is always eternal. i love this song and video montage, but i didn't realise how amazing this video is until tonight. Its cut from 6 different live performances over 35 years!! Its so unbelievably connected and edited , the joy of each concert, so visible. Peter Gabriel is a genius but the person or team who put this video together, unbelievable magic! Thanks so much on behalf of everyone who enjoys it.
For sure. He is something very special. Unfortunately some of his multi-media work is not only hard to come by, but alto technical difficult to explorer or a modern computer. But then there is montages likes this that are just amazing in subtlety, but on the same time holds lots of depth. Also, it is clear Peter Gabriel has something about things spinning from stages, to biking on a spinning stage to also being inside a giant ball.
I just re-watched this after commenting on it several months ago. Putting aside the brilliance of the song and the talent of the musicians, this is just a fucking BRILLIANT piece of video engineering.
Shortly after my mother's passing, I bought a ticket to see Peter Gabriel in concert in Atlanta. I had a 4th row ticket (and found no one in front of me) It basically took me out of my funk and made me realize that there was a life worth living. This is the 40th anniversary of Salisbury Hill. Kudos sir.
Yes, hope you're doing well too.... Beautiful. Music is so healing. I am a not a son, I am a daughter but, when I was 19 (1979), my father turned to me and said those exact words, "Grab your things I've come to take you home". No other words have ever brought me such comfort. Today, I still hear his words whenever I am unsure or scared. xo
Undestood, Dean, I hope all the best for You. In the age of 55 I see this also some kind of retrospective of our lives; the Song remains the same, but step is getting shorter than almost 40 years ago. Also less hair but more mass...
Yep Jim D. PG was pretty special. Genesis kept going after he left but to this day the fans would love to know why he left. It's Peter's business, of course, but it would be good to know.
@@SuzyQ334 I believe that is what this song is about. His decision to leave Genesis. Most likely his reason for leaving was due to artistic differences, but as you said. We may never know. I also agree with you that Peter Gabriel is a special guy. I am not a big Genesis fan. I find Peter Gabriel resonates more with me.
As mentioned this song was all about leaving Genesis ..."I felt part of the machinery" etc.. Also, the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album, although recorded by Genesis was almost entirely written by PG and this caused some friction within the band. As a footnote, He is still performing this song in 2023 on his i/o tour, so that's 45 years now, and counting
I have a tradition that this is the last song I play when I move from my current home. It then is also the first song I play when I arrive at my new location. Many good memories for this song.
I cannot think of a better 50 year compilation of a signature song by one of the most important songwriters/ artists/ performers during our time on Earth.
Whenever I hear this song it brings tears. My 34 year old son passed in March, 2018 and the lyrics make me believe he was taken home. Boom, boom, boom.
My brother died the same age. Years later while vacationing I was sitting in the kitchen. I felt a feeling I won't ever forget . Next morning she told me that how and where I was brought back memories of him . "Parents should not outlive their own children " Rip Mom Dad and Steve
'Son... grab your things, I've come to take you home'. For those of us who have grown old with Peter Gabriel, that line, like the entire video, is so uplifting. Wonderful.
The editing of Peter's performances of this track over so many years is simply outstanding. It just shows how iconic this tune really is. Love it to bits.
The best rocksong ever. I'm a fan since I was 16, now I'm 61. A friend who had to undergo a heart surgery, listened to this song just before she entered the operating room. It gave her courage. By the way, she is OK now!
One year older than you, sir. And still love this powerful song.. We were lucky to be brought up on this type of music. I pity the next generation who are spoon-fed what I can only call manufactured, conveyor-belt music of today. …..Do I hear echoes of my parents knocking my musical tastes? Christ, I’m turning into my dear departed mum and dad!
@@tompurcell1499 hahaha couldn't agree more Tom, some of the material my sons and his friends are into is, well shocking to say the least, full of profanity and hate for woman etc etc. Like you said buddy , I feel blessed I was born in the 70s was so I got to grow with 80s music!! All the best Tom 👍 👌
This song always reminds me of my Father. He would always come and pick me up at the end of each term at University, when I finished my summer jobs, when ever I was moving. He would pick me up, we'd grab my things and he would always take me home. He was always there (with my mum) to help me plot my way through life. He died in Nov 2019. I like to think I'm helping my daughters and granddaughters in a similar way.
Listen back to back with his Kate Bush duet Don’t Give Up you’ll be crying buckets…!! What a master of lyrics, rhythm, melody and arrangements. A humble genius.
Soo sorry for your loss!! I am sure you miss him and your granddad. I too love this song and always cry when I think of leaving this earth and my son behind.
Peter Gabriel is a genius. As much for its creativity (songwriter, singer, showman) in the original Genesis (co-founder) as for its brilliant evolution in his own solo career between technology, world music, experimental sound, classic music but always with beautiful rock melodies. Peter Gabriel was educated in a musical English family (College of Charterhouse) and could learning piano, flute, percussions, mime and dance. But his major asset will forever remain his charismatic voice. Now, we're looking forward to the new Peter Gabriel's album.
What,an exaggeration! Great voice and composing skills. Flautist?! Amateurish! Ever heard Ian Anderson or James Galway? And Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Steve Hackett are far greater musicians than Gabriel.
I struggle to find the words. This song was great in 77 when I listened as a 7 year old. Its great now as I listen as a 53 year old. And, to add to that, this video shows that passage of time. I watch and listen but also see my life in stages...brilliant
Something i have noticed over the years watching and listening to Peter Gabriel is that everyone doesn't just stand around. Everyone is in constant motion. Doing this days on end is simply amazing. This, Games without Frontiers and In your Eyes are my favorites
Yesterday 9/11/23 I had a pleasure of hearing and seeing you live in Toronto for the first time in my life and what a pleasure it was! Thank you for the music, Sir.
I saw him in Pittsburgh 9/23/2023 first time, 2nd row. Brilliant and amazing performance. When they played Solsbury Hill, he skipped around the stage just like his younger days. Feel very privileged to have seen him.
This song was about the time he left Genesis and went solo and is an inspiration to anyone who sets out on a new path in life, whether that's in work, business, family or just in life. It's full of joy and energy and like others here I never tire of listening to it. I was at the O2 for the last performance featured here - a great night. Thank you Peter Gabriel!
Im 55 in ten days. In the last 45 year's ive constantly come back to this song. Its the song of my life past and my life to come. its personal and I don't want to explain any more. You will know if you have been there. Love to those that have. X
I understand that this wonderful song is about a religious experience but the line "son, grab your things, I've come to take you home" resonates so powerfully with me. Being a father of a 23 year old wonderful young woman, I hope she has no troubles but to be able to help her and bring her home to safety if things go wrong makes my life significant. Oh, I do have a wonderful wife, so doing what I can for her is important too. I'm not a bleeding heart but what else can a man do than care for his wife and child

PG wrote some of the most beautiful songs of the last 60 years. But even among "Games without Frontiers", "Blood of Eden", "Don't Give Up", "Biko", "Red Rain", "Digging in the Dirt", "In your Eyes" and "Come Talk to Me" this is the one that always moves me to tears.
If you ever went to a Peter Gabriel concert (as I have), you know what a crowd favourite this song is. It elevates the mood in the concert hall like few other songs can. Thanks for capturing that in this video.
This song hits hard. I was going through a bitter divorce when this song came out living by myself in an apartment and missing my kids. And my future wife came to me and said grab your things I've come to take you home. I've been home for 28 years thank God.
Solsbury Hill is a mystical magical place just outside Bath, England. I used to climb it at dusk each night after work listening to this. Sometimes the things we don't understand collide with a physical act and reach nirvanic union.
My dad passed away on January 1st of this year and every time I hear this song it brings me to tears because it reminds me of his joy and kindness and just how Wise he was

I'm 55 yo. I made a plan for the next year: to listen the music I loved during my life. Now, while I can still hear, I still have my mind clear, while I'm still pretty healthy and can still enjoy music. THIS is the 1st song that came to my mind. THANK YOU, PETER GABRIEL.
Fell in love with white coat PG. saw the black leather vest PG in concert. Seeing older PG as a true peer. Perfect. This particular song connects me to my mother and the day she died. I played it over and over and screamed as is expected
I am STILL in love with Peter Gabriel. My FAVORITE was the way the band would do the dance with their legs!!! I'm going to admit that I would do it with them in the 80's. Did it in 2023! I felt 16 again. Thank you Peter for the amazing feelings I still get. And UA-cam you've made my world.

The sheer joy in every single performance throughout the years makes my heart happy. The world may be turning to shit, but we will always have moments like this. ♥
We have seen Peter Gabriel in concert four times (most recently in concert with Sting). Each show was innovative. fresh, and completely entertaining. I think his audiences get excited when hearing Solsbury Hill in concert because everyone can relate to the lyrics and delight in the way Peter expresses joy in 'acting out' the song live. He's a living legend that is still producing magnificent work!
I never tire of hearing this song. Its still as good today as the day it was released. Got a real good feel to it and great to sing and dance along too. Thank you for your wonderful music peter.
It is and still will be THE song I love most of Peter. You know, when you hear a song the first time ever and it catches you immediately...and the only thing you want to know is what's the name of the song and who did it!
Our bodies are just vehicles. We get to UPGRADE our vehicles as we go forward. No problem.
FEARLESS!!!!!!!! 🥳🔥🎉

This is a good song to dance to
i love this song and video montage, but i didn't realise how amazing this video is until tonight. Its cut from 6 different live performances over 35 years!! Its so unbelievably connected and edited , the joy of each concert, so visible. Peter Gabriel is a genius but the person or team who put this video together, unbelievable magic! Thanks so much on behalf of everyone who enjoys it.
Joyous!
It is really almost 5 decades of brilliance, from performing in 1977 to the 2010s - just incredible
How many singers are singing?
@@johnjeffreys6440 Lead singer all the way is Mr. Gabriel him self, that is part of why the montage is pretty special.
This song holds a special place in the hearts of those of us who listened and loved in the late 70’s and early 80’s… Peter Gabriel is a genius
Indeed a genius
One of the greatest songs ever created....MASTERPIECE !
All we needed was one.
I just re-watched this after commenting on it several months ago. Putting aside the brilliance of the song and the talent of the musicians, this is just a fucking BRILLIANT piece of video engineering.
just the same to me. I can't avoid tears of deep gratitude, not only for the song and lyrics, but for the video, too.
Absolutely agree with this comment
you think, it is !
I did the same, it must have taken forever to keep the lyrics in sync
Dude! I'm SO with you! This is BRILLIANT!
Shortly after my mother's passing, I bought a ticket to see Peter
Gabriel in concert in Atlanta. I had a 4th row ticket (and found no one
in front of me) It basically took me out of my funk and made me realize
that there was a life worth living. This is the 40th anniversary of
Salisbury Hill. Kudos sir.
u
Dean Klein good luck, hope you're doing well.
*Solsbury Hill...I’m pretty sure Salisbury is a type of beef steak? 🤔
Absolutely brilliant song and performances spanning 35 years. There's no one like Peter Gabriel!
@@mp1201 Spoken like a different, but true fan.
Agree, but have you heard Burce?
The energy on that stage is almost contagious!!!!
Yeah, kinda like that's what joy looks like
I have a tradition that this is the last song I play when I move from my current home. It then is also the first song I play when I arrive at my new location. Many good memories for this song.
This is the most beautiful moving tradition I've ever heard of!!
That's awesome
Jan de wilde
Geoffrey Wadsworth bloody hell man , how many times have you moved ? lol
Modest Mouse's "The World at Large" is even better for that situation, in my experience.
May God bless him and keep him. We all go home some day. xxx
So sorry for your loss
My brother died the same age. Years later while vacationing I was sitting in the kitchen. I felt a feeling I won't ever forget . Next morning she told me that how and where I was brought back memories of him . "Parents should not outlive their own children " Rip Mom Dad and Steve
I'm sure the Lord Jesus is still taking care of your heart... A prayer from my heart. GOD BLESS US ALL!
🙏Bless All of you 🙏
When your first single is this song... What a talent
There is something so joyous seeing men dance with so much happiness.❤
'Son... grab your things, I've come to take you home'. For those of us who have grown old with Peter Gabriel, that line, like the entire video, is so uplifting. Wonderful.
Yes sir..
You couldn't be more correct. Peace from Atlanta, Georgia.
He is amazing❤️
Beautifully put.
That line has stuck with me since I first heard it, and I thought I was the only admirer 😃
is it ok to cry after watching this ?
Absolutely
The editing of Peter's performances of this track over so many years is simply outstanding. It just shows how iconic this tune really is. Love it to bits.
War ein geiler Song,würde die Zeit gerne zurückdrehen😢
The best rocksong ever. I'm a fan since I was 16, now I'm 61. A friend who had to undergo a heart surgery, listened to this song just before she entered the operating room. It gave her courage. By the way, she is OK now!
Good to hear
I wish my best friend survived his heart attack. I am glad your friend survived.. . . it.
I am 77, and I love going back via UA-cam.
I treasure those long rides home from school with my son more than anything in the world. I know you dad did as well.
Es gibt kein Lied, das so Klasse ist. Alles passt, er wohnt ja um die Ecke. Ich ziehe mein Hut. Klasse 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😊
Every time I hear him sing " son grab your things, I've come to take you home" I tear up. Such a father/son, son/father thing...
Listen back to back with his Kate Bush duet Don’t Give Up you’ll be crying buckets…!!
What a master of lyrics, rhythm, melody and arrangements. A humble genius.
My dad loved this song,he died 2 days ago.such a great dad and grandfather,my heart is broken. RIP John Knowles x
Soo sorry for your loss!! I am sure you miss him and your granddad. I too love this song and always cry when I think of leaving this earth and my son behind.

I have always loved Peter and this is my fav of all songs. Its going to b played at my funeral for sure....
Look forward to his new album
The crowd can't clap because of the weird time stamp on this song. Lol
What,an exaggeration! Great voice and composing skills. Flautist?! Amateurish! Ever heard Ian Anderson or James Galway? And Tony Banks, Phil
Collins, and Steve Hackett are far greater musicians than Gabriel.
Box, Wiltshire - a fabulous music story.
yes, I'm finding Peter more appealing by the album, such talent
I struggle to find the words. This song was great in 77 when I listened as a 7 year old. Its great now as I listen as a 53 year old. And, to add to that, this video shows that passage of time. I watch and listen but also see my life in stages...brilliant
I agree.
OMG When Peter smiles, my heart jus goes 'Boom Boom Boom'.
I am seeing him Friday in Detroit, 9-29-23. So excited!!!!
Interesting fact about PG is that he was inspired to go solo by Bruce Springsteen
It’s a song for the South African political prisoner Steve Biko who was murdered by the South African government in 1977.
@@jodi183 Not so. The song you are referring to is titled simply "Biko".
yes you are correct. I was commenting on the track Biko. Somehow it brought me here.
Am sure peter Gabriel is tiring of touring. We old hippies sure love you and everything you've done for mankind. All the world appreciates you sir

There is just something fantastic about this video. Such a great song, a great artist, and the passage of time shown make this one of my favorites
Could not agree more 😅
He also has a lot of the same backing musicians, which says a lot for him. Quailty.
Not sure why, but this one brought a tear to my eye..
There are few songs that transcend your life. This is one.
Mike Williams You’ve got that right!
Too right- a rare thing
yes indeed
Stands to reason that one of the greatest live performances of ALL time would belong to this giant.
Jethro Tull-No shit Sherlock
This one of the most joyous pieces of music I’ve ever had the privilege to hear
I had the privilege of hearing it the first time it was played on Radio One in 1977. Stills sounds as fresh . Does that make me feel ancient? Yes!!
It has to be the greatest song by any performer about deciding to leave a successful band to go solo!

Solsbury Hill, Bath UK - My hometown. I play this every time I feel homesick. Thanks Peter.
Bath is my Happy Place and this is my Happy Song. Got a massive lump in my throat as I type
I’m obsessed with this video.
This is one of the best written songs of all time. Masterpiece.
A couple of years ago I saw Peter and Sting perform it together at the Hollywood bowl, it was amazing!!
Yes I believe it was meant for the rest of genesis on why he left the band. That is what I have heard.
If you ever went to a Peter Gabriel concert (as I have), you know what a crowd favourite this song is. It elevates the mood in the concert hall like few other songs can. Thanks for capturing that in this video.
I love this song, Peter Gabriel is definitely one of Britain’s greatest songwriters
This is such a great compilation of different times in his and our lives.
Imagine getting old and not losing any of your talent. Purity of the passion.
Pete never had any talent in the first place so nothing to lose.
Huge respect for Tony Levin and David Rhodes. I can't imagine who else could execute Gabriel's vision as well as they do.
This song hits hard. I was going through a bitter divorce when this song came out living by myself in an apartment and missing my kids. And my future wife came to me and said grab your things I've come to take you home. I've been home for 28 years thank God.
Omg orsome👌
Solsbury Hill is a mystical magical place just outside Bath, England. I used to climb it at dusk each night after work listening to this. Sometimes the things we don't understand collide with a physical act and reach nirvanic union.

So true
We have seen Peter Gabriel in concert four times (most recently in concert with Sting). Each show was innovative. fresh, and completely entertaining. I think his audiences get excited when hearing Solsbury Hill in concert because everyone can relate to the lyrics and delight in the way Peter expresses joy in 'acting out' the song live. He's a living legend that is still producing magnificent work!
Count yourself extremely privileged. Peter Gabriel is firmly at the top of my bucket list
That's exactly this song for me - for at least 30 years! Thank you Peter Gabriel for this piece of art!
