This song always reminds me of a horrible time in my life, where I ended up alone and financially struggling, I almost ended up homeless too. One day after finally getting out of that hole and I moved into my own place, this song started playing on the radio. It was a new beginning for me and the start of a new life.
well done fly lady
Siddharta...really, this man has a vision of time...
Good vibes, Patricia. Perhaps Tom is sending them too.
only someone who sees the real possibility of being a homeless person appreciates a bed a roof and a shower
That’s awesome! Congratulations on your new beginning
If your enjoying this Tom Petty classic in summer 2023, you have awesome musical taste❤
always love him, and with the Wilburys as well, great 4

True😊
OF COURSE, LEARNING TO FLY, BUT I DO NOT HAVE WINGS, AND COMING DOWN IS THE HARDEST THING. LOL
I KNOW!
I am 63. Grew up with Tom Petty's music. I love him and miss him dearly
I bought his first album Bre ak down song on it. My brother in-law came over from the Nethland and this song was fused in his head.that was a life time ago. This is approved .
Me too. Sad he left so soon.

@@MichelleR-tl2ubsame here every time I hear this song I like it better than the last time I heard it 🇦🇺
Saw Tom and the Heartbreakers in Adelaide (South Australia) in the early eighties. They were support act for Dylan. Jesus he was pathetic. Got my money's worth with Tom and his band.
2024 and still listening to tom petty 🛸👽💝

Beastly!
Humans can fly!
All day, every day!
This song is very special to me. My father was a commercial airline pilot. We shared a love of flying and airplanes. On the day of my first solo flight, he came with me to see me fly for the first time. It was the only time in his 85 years he ever said he was proud of me. And he'd been waiting his whole life to say, "My son the pilot".
On our way home, this song came on the radio. I miss you so much Pa.
@Bobby Klein No problem at all. It is a special moment for me that I wanted to share with his fans. I love reading comments of how an artist's song touches people and that it is so much more than 'just a song'. God bless. :)
Que nada e só se privar tu sabe que tem que se proteger nas Redes sociais. O que eu faço fica registrado em Cook . #
This absolutely blew my mind. What an incredible synchronicity and beautiful moment. I have full body chills haha, all I can say is “wow” 🤯 take care my friend I hope you’re doing well ❤
Edit- Actually I thought of something to say:
This anecdote perfectly exemplifies the incredible power of music. Music is the deepest and most emotional communication form available to us.
This story clearly shows why it’s important that we always strive to create the best possible art and express the true depths of how we all feel, that words could never describe. Art is more real than life in some ways.
@@maxwellk10 Thank you. This song is very special to me because of that moment. I can't even listen to it around other people. As much as I love the song, I only listen to it a couple times a year. One being on Pa's birthday when I go to visit his burial site.
@@maxwellk10 Completely agree with you on the power of music. I love reading the comments on so many of the songs I like where people share truly touching, personal stories on what a song means to them and how a song can mean so many different things to so many people and evoke such deep feelings. Amazing.
6 years now since Tom passed, my God time flies. So much great music.
Six years ago today he got his wings... Heaven has one hell of a band
Time does not fly. Tom Petty learned this when he tried to learn to fly. RIP Legend.
Tom Petty was a legend RIP
Thank you Kyle I needed to hear this song today, you're an amazing man and I'm happy to be your girlfriend. I'll show this comment to you one day lol❤
wow that long... rest in heaven friend
This song will always remind me of the bittersweet, turning corners, and moving on. I listened to it a lot around the time that my relationship with my first love, (an 11 year relationship) was fizzling out and coming to an end. I loved her desperately, and yet i knew we were sliding further and further away from eachother. When she broke the news to me that she wanted to move on, I didn't want to let go, as I had told her I never would. What goes up, must come down, and coming down is the hardest thing.
The more time is pushing us further away from the 90‘s, the more golden this unique decade appears in retrospective…"Learning to fly“ by Tom Petty is a class of its own, one of those 90’s masterpieces, that reflects the zeitgeist of this era so perfect…a time, when life was much more simple and essential, when everything was coloured in purple and the grass was greener than nowadays…
Well said, well said!

Nobody sounds like Tom Petty. Nobody. I miss him and his extraordinary voice and music every damn day.
Me too. Angel Dream is such a beautiful song.
Me too. I can’t get over the loss but I still find joy in the music he made for us
My best friend of 33 years (who has lived with me (platonically) for 25+ years) passed away 2 days ago (blood cancer/'Multiple Myeloma'). For the week & a half before his death, he was being kept heavily sedated (for pain) in hospice & was unable to communicate. The day before he died, I held his hand and told him I love him, and asked him to please send me a sign when he gets to Heaven & gets his wings. *ONE HOUR* _after_ his time of death, this song ('Learning To Fly') came on the radio...& the song that played _after this_ one, was "Learn To Fly" by Foo Fighters. Even if it was just coincidence, these 2 songs being played *back-to-back* at the *one-hour mark* after his death, & my having asked him for a *sign when he gets his wings,* brought me comfort. ❤
33 yrs of a man and woman living platonically together.... c'mon something happened 😜

In my humble opinion he was the best ever U.S. male rock artist in history
Tom Petty is a rock music legend.
is a pop music legend..maybe very very very soft rock.Hm.
Still rock, i think...Elvis and Chuck Berry are, Zeppelin and The Who are, The Eagles and Pink Floyd are, AC/DC and Midnight Oil are, Bowie and Lou Reed are...so, Tom is, i'm shure...
Glad you mentioned Chuck Berry. The man is still alive at 89.
He sure is. And he was a classmate of my mom's at Gainesville High School.
I was raised on his music.
I was too, sorta. Discovered "Full Moon Fever" after seeing "Free Falling" on MTV when I was in like, 3rd grade. Asked my mom to buy me that cassette tape. First music I ever "owned." He's been a favorite ever since. Other girls at the time liked New Kids on the Block. Not me. I was a rock 'n roller from day one.
you've won your wings now
Rest in peace

@@nicolecocoxoxo oh sweetie his music transcends generations. He and his music will live on forever unlike the music of the current generation of auto tune and massive industrial production.
I'll be 78 in a couple of months and this song has been my anthem for a long time...I flew in the USAF in Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos back in the 60's many of the aircraft I flew are in the boneyards now...I kept flying after the Air Force, I started a Cessna Dealership and flew for a very long time...I love this song...
I respect that, Chuck. My neighbour was a Royal Australian Airforce and commercial pilot who married one of his flight attendants. He's a tough 84 year old grandpa but his wife died after 55 years of marriage from Alzheimer's. I wish I had that resilience.
My son married an Australian girl he met because the Australian Airforce used McClellan AFB for their F-111 Depot Maintenace, Zoe came here one summer to visit her cousin and they meet and fell in love. Her dad was on a helicopter crew in Vietnam the same year I was there. I also flew out of Thailand, and Laos 1965, 1966, and 1967 @@pauljordan4452 1

Don't worry about that his music is timeless
Man the layered guitars just make this so special IMO, the more percussive steel string, that crisp, bright electric clean tone, that jangly tone during the chorus, and that delicious blues fuzz for the solos. The interplay between each guitar's melodic part creates this luscious cloud of guitars sailing smoothly over that insistent, punchy drum pattern.
It reminds me of some of JJ Cale's music, the way it just floats along (e.g. "Ride me High", "Travelin Light", "Friday", "Carry On").
I still can't believe he's gone :(
