"You've never heard it till you've heard Eddie Vedder sing it". So true,so respectful. Eddie's voice is something special and Tom is the best. One of the best video ever. Sad that Tom is not here anymore.
It could happen to anyone. I went into the hospital Sunday, 3/09/2014 and woke Saturday, 3/15, and my first visitor tells me I died and was expected to die again. She said I was a living, breathing miracle. That doesn’t happen very often but it happens. Usually, a virus or an accident kills you. And that’s it. So be real quick to tell the ones you love, that you love them
I sat next to Eddie on the school bus through middle school and into high school (78-80). The bus radio was always turned to an AM Pop station during the long boring ride home... we were one of the last stops. Not a day went by that we didn't hear a Tom Petty song. How cool would it have been to turn to him and say, "In about 27 years you'll be on a stage singing this with him."
Proof of what? That I and hundreds of other people went to Oak Crest and San Dieguito in the late 70's-early 80's? Took no effort. I could care less if you believe me. I'm just relating a story. @@jeffbraunecker6465
I was lucky enough to be at this concert. Pearl Jam opened for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. This song was the most memorable of the night. Amazing! Tom, RIP.
They need to keep Narcan on hand around all musicians who are addicted to pills. Prince and Tom Petty may have been saved. It reverses the opiates in your body and can reverse overdoses. They are starting to keep it on ambulances in places that have a high number of drug overdoses.
I absolutely agree Misty, a famous person walking on stage with another famous person and has to shake off the nerves. I bought my first Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers album at 14 years old in the 9th grade. Saw them 17 times in concert and still have my ticket stubs. My first ticket cost $6. Stay safe my music friend.
Eddie can do this with just about any band because he has no desire to upstage any of the members of whichever band he performs with and, of course, is insanely talented. One of my favorite performers of all time in any discipline.
That breathtaking bridge, starting at about 3:20 "I'll be your bleeding heart, I'll be your crying fool." I've loved this song for going on 40 years,. But till I heard Petty sing this version, I never realized the power of those lyrics. Miss you, Tom Petty...and the more you could have done!
Tom was right. Eddie kills this! Flawless. Two of my biggest rock heroes come together for an epic! Tom and the Heartbeakers are one of the greatest bands in history. I sometimes play this on a loop for an hour! I don't mind admitting that the guitar riff often gives me tears due to both my memories and its amazing and timeless melody. Mike and the rest of the guys never lost a step. It is so sad that Tom has been taken from all of us. He endured so much towards the end FOR US, his fans. RIP Tom Petty!!!
You can see the joy radiating from Eddie Vedder in every frame of this. This is the greatest day of his life. And wouldn’t it be for anyone? Every musician (at least every great one) was a FAN before they started making their own music, and this is clearly the joy of a kid who sang, full volume, along with this song in his bedroom, probably countless times. It is one of the most soul-enriching performances I’ve ever heard/seen. Brilliant.
This is beautiful for so many reasons, but maybe the biggest is that Eddie knows how lucky he is to be standing there, in the middle of that band, in the middle of that song, being trusted to sing it. The look on his face reflects what it feels like to be given an enormous gift that you can't quite believe you've received.
When I read Tom drove miles to bring his granddaughter her pacifier they forgot at his house, I knew he was more than just a great talent, he was a truly good person. RIP Tom, thanks for all you gave us!
I cried when I heard Tom Petty had passed. Your age really starts hitting home when the famous people you grew up admiring start dying. There's been a lot!!
15 years into an already legendary career, and Eddie is still ultra respectful and nervous to be playing with Tom Petty and to sing one of his biggest hits. It's not something that you want to mess up. Well done.
Dam! I love listening to Tom Petty. How great does Eddie sing this song - he is the undeniable best singer of a generation. One in a billion! Not just singing... His creative mind! His talent for pulling words together to bring so much feeling and passion to lyrics. So happy to be able to sing and dance along. Tom Petty came to Philly so long ago and I can still see him in my minds eye whenever I hear his voice. These two are a perfect duo! It's good to be alive.!!!!!!!!

I've seen PJ a few times, love them a ton, but I have always said Tom Petty put on the best show I have ever seen (Cincinnati @ Riverbend). So many hits to choose from.
Tracy Leach. Eddie is not Neil Young’s nephew. He has referenced him as “Uncle Neil” over the years because Young was a mentor to PJ in the mid 90s. Eddie nailed it on this one btw.
What happens in this video is beautiful. Tom Petty asking Eddie to share the stage, and sing a song that means a lot to people is amazing. And he is clearly grateful and kills it. Can’t ask for much more.
Everything about 4:51 is just unexplainable. Vedder. Tom in the back vibing to his own song while someone else knocks it out of the park. The guitar riffs and undertones. Musical moments like that truly are what makes music amazing. RIP Tom. What a loss to the world. 💔🎸
Two legends sharing a hug and the stage. My goodness. It really does not get better than this. Saw Petty 7 times. Amazing performer through and through and he had such a connection with his fans. Gone too soon.
Damn, Eddie nailed it. I graduated high school in '92 jamming to Pearl Jam. I've always loved Tom Petty. Sometimes it just hurts the way the vibe just fits.
So you have a great musician who you love growing up and you buy their albums and on one of those albums you learn every song on it. This is one of my favorite videos on UA-cam. I love how Eddie doesn't try to make the show about himself or steal any of the limelight. He is incredibly gracious to Tom and his band and politely thanks Tom and departs the stage. What a tremendous performance (by Eddie and the band) and an even greater class act.
Yeah, sure do miss you Petty. And yeah, the waiting is the hardest part........Eddy really is singing well and really was the right choice by Petty for this song.

What a waste of great musicians and great songs that would be. No way would Eddie's off-key croak be right for the songs. And he can keep his phony "I'm Mr. Humble" act to himself too. The guy is as big a self-promoter as anyone.
@@andrewfurst5711 he literally just killed on that song and has proven he can work within multiple styles. Vedder has nothing to prove to anyone. Especially you

Oh jeez, Eddie is clearly putting on an act with his phony "Mr. Humble" thing. Learn a little about the guy. Virtually his entire "history" is fiction, a fabrication to make himself seem like a real rock star. And we'll just have to disagree on the "he has talent" part. Likewise! He could read the proverbial Whitepages and it would be great.
Eddie's only talent is self-promotion.
if he would just stay out of political stuff he would be damn near flawless lol
Humble is such a Big word
And humble is very fitting for Tom and Eddie
This is what music is all about! Love this jam session between Mr. Vedder and the late great Tom Petty.
Agree. Love how they clearly respect each other as musicians. Eddie's voice, OMG!
@@lyoo-pn4gs It is quite exquisite. Very nice baritone
Eddie really sounds in top form here. Outstanding !!!
The hug between them looked so genuine ❤
Damn, effortlessly done by Eddie!
I keep watching this performance over and over, great stuff.
Amazing. RIP Tom. Thanks for giving us so much great music
goosebumps from the beginning to the end of the song... no matter how many times I listen to it
This is bliss, pure bliss...the proverbial lightning in a bottle. Fantastic.
you said it, Elmo!
great description ...from ireland
Yup...
Love how Eddie Vedder does his little swaying dancing.
What a gracious performer Tom Petty was, i had the pleasure of seeing him and the Hearbreakers in 09 and they freaking killed it. RIP Tom!
Eddie Vedder. Please cover every song ever made.
