Jeff Lynne, Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood and Dhani Harrison version was not close, but by far better. Jeff Lynne is the mastermind behind that sound and also a close friend of Harrison, Prince´s solo was on an other level. Not sure if you are aware of this, but he played guitar on the studio version. George showed the song to the band, they ignored it. He showed it to Clapton, who loved it. He brought Clapton into the studio and they worked on it there and largely recorded it, with Clapton doing a large part of the guitar. Band loved it, they put it on vinyl with some final touches. THAT is why he gets to lead on this. It's half his.
@@davedzone Very true. I would only add, that I also really like George's acoustic version, without Clapton and with an added verse. It's on the Anthology disc, 3. It's a much different song than the White Album. Stll, a great song with a nice Harrison vocal. Less 'rockier', more melancholic, perhaps. But, highly recommended. Imho.
Yes lad well said. Scouser here. Grew up round the corner from where the Beatles are from. So proud. The best that ever did it. Just mates from the south end. Love it
When you listen to a song that you have heard a thousand times, played by a guitarist heard a thousand times, accompanied by sacred monsters heard a thousand times .... but you still shiver. Immense, unattainable musicians.
This was nice; however, the 2004 version with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn, Steve Winwood, D. Harrison, along with Prince and Marc Mann on solos, was off the charts.
It's a terrible recording. I'd like to hear what the percussionists are playing but they're drowned out by three drummers. (All playing the exact same thing).
Listening to this on George's 81st birthday. This performance is still just stunning. Once again McCartney reminds us that he created that opening piano riff and keeps it going throughout. All the musicians here are just bringing it.
Awesome! I grew up on my dads taste in music and albeit it was diverse a few artists/groups has stuck with me my entire life (I'm now nearly 30). The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis and Bill Evans. I still listen to all of them almost everyday. In other words, this song may still put your son to sleep in a couple of decades. Music is amazing.
I loved hearing this in 1969 in college at age 18. Now at 72, I still love hearing it. When I was 15 , my 3 buddies and I entered a "Beatle Contest". I played George Harrison. The Beatles have been there all my adult life and have given me so many hours of enjoyment. They still do today!!!!
I actually envey you. You guys who experienced the 60's and 70's have seen the best songs created infront of you. You guys enjoyed it and celebrated it. Folks who came after you just heard it. You have the seen the best decades of music. Lucky you.
The Beatles and Eric Clapton recorded this song on the day I was born!!! I’ve been a Beatles fan my whole life and George was always my favorite, but I only found out that this song was recorded the day I was born about four months ago! I’m still overwhelmed to learn this! Is it any wonder what a fan I am?!! 😊❤ This whole concert is amazing! I don’t know how they held it together so well! I cry every time I watch it! Everyone on that stage really loved George!
Is it that the truth. I'd like to start all over now. To my heart to make decisions, I've made a couple bad ones. I've forever pay for those mistakes. I still have to trust in your heart if I didn't there would have been more mistakes. God bless you all.
The Clapton solos were absolutely amazing!!!! It really looked like he was talking to his very good friend with his guitar telling him how much he loves and misses him - maybe apologizing for chasing after his wife also!
George was and is my favorite of all of the fab 4. His songs touch different emotions for me than the others. He was the sweet soul of the Beatles. Eric plays and sings beautifully on this magnificent tribute to his friend. George's son playing with all those assembled is emotional beyond words that can be expressed. The all star talent level of all those performing on this version is amazing. RIP George
That's why them dudes is who they are and we aren't. I'm just as impressed with how perfectly Paul and Eric hit the high notes with precision and on time and not a fraction of a note off. That's every bit as splendid, especially 40-some years after the song was released. Nobody's in their 20s anymore, so the purity of their singing voices to me is equally mind-blowing.
@@talkswithvigy7860 Oh of course! And I've seen a few of the others. They're all excellent but don't all have the crispness of this performance. That alone is hard to do when you've performed this so many times you're doing it in your sleep. You'd think that after the gazillionth time playing this that boredom would set in or it comes in at something less than 100%. Not here, they nailed it.
Corey G the thing is that george was being less happier with his 1st wife, but he wanted the best for her, even if she was unfertile, the best was clapton's love, he knew it was right bc he was his friend, and so he married olivia the mother of dhani
George Harrison never heard a more beautifully performed version of this song. That his son was wrapped up in it, that it was done by talented friends who loved him and shared with the world made it perfect. I can think of no finer legacy. Well done! Thank you. Texas
The percussionist is Ray Cooper, can often be spotted in the band line up for Elton John, brilliant character, brilliant percussionist...makes me smile too, always seems to be having the time of his life when playing....unique!
I feel bad for anyone who gets hung up on that sort of thing. What matters in music is how it makes people feel and how it sounds, which is why Clapton is top tier ever!
actually.. like none of the drummers are synchronized haha. Sure they play the same backbeat from time to time, but almost all of them are just playing randomly and are doing drum fills all over the place haha, like in 1:19 or 5:05. Love how Ringo is just playing like he's always been playing. But the mix out is very different, they only seem to be using one or two drum mixes, and tiny bit of percussion some times, tho everyone is mic'd up. But if you were to mix all of those instruments together it would be kaos haha, hope they had good monitoring on stage and could cancel out some of those drums, Erik didn't even had any in ears. Final mix sounds real good tho!
I don't know if anyone noticed, but Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Jeff Lynne, and Billy Preston are all staring at Eric Clapton in complete awe and admiration as he plays the outro. They're like "OMG that is amazing" and then Dhani goes over to him showing complete gratitude. I don't know what spirit took over Clapton, but that was an amazing performance.
This has to be the greatest version of this song, ever. The whole band is playing as one and yet I swear I can hear each instrument. They blend so well. The brass in the rhythm sounds amazing.
Are you one of the 18M viewers of this version: ua-cam.com/video/oDs2Bkq6UU4/v-deo.html George's vocals there are much more expressive. And I love when he and Eric go toe-to-toe at 3:30. Probably a good thing that Dhani didn't try that.
Forgive me if I am using the wrong term I am in no way a musically educated person. The saxaphones, playing along. Is that not to the rhythm. Please inform me if I am mistaken.

It's worth noting however, Marc Mann carried most of the backing solo parts on behalf of Eric so that EC could focus on the lead vocal. @@SuperAllanjames Well as you know George persuaded Eric to come in and do some overdubs at Abbey Road on WMGGW and those totally changed the tone of the track to a much more rock feel.
