    Thanks! If I weren't an idiot, it would've worked great. I followed your instructions up to the point of dropping one of those 10mm bolts into the netherworld. So, after driving to our awesome family-owned hardware store, I bought 3 more, just to be safe. Dropped 2 of them. Got the 3rd one home. I'm pretty sure I cross-threaded the 10mm bolt nearest the alternator, but after 10 minutes of cranking and a couple of coarse words, it snugged up tight. Good luck to the next guy. Then I disconnected the negative battery terminal, waited 10 minutes, fired it up, and NO MORE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. Or as my wife said, "Why is that little yellow video camera light on?" Thanks again!

      +Paul Stalter Evening Paul.....every mechanic is a day or job like that sometimes. Usually its right before quitting time on a Friday. None the less its back on the road and you know what not to do next time lol. I cant tell you all the funny descriptions I have heard over the years of the lights on the dash lol. Thanks for the comment and for taking the time to watch the videos.

    Hey man! I just did this on my '04.
    I really wish I'd seen your video before I started, but I earned my stripes going through it on my own first! That but about unbolting the top bolt and prying it up to get at the bottom one would have saved my blood, sweat, and cash as I had to buy a new universal joint socket adapter, and I BUSTED my 3/8th to 1/4" reducer!!! Totally sheared off! And I got a nice little cut on my hand for my over-efforts!
    But, that's what they say... "It's not a project until you beed on it..."!
    Thanks for your videos, I'll be sure to check out more!

    Thank you so very much for posting this video! Our local dealership quoted me $630 to replace both the EGR valve and NVLD pump on my 2006 T&C! Total cost for both parts from RockAuto was $60+. Followed your directions for replacing the EGR valve - worked great - didn't have to remove the alternator or belt. Thanks again!

      @MotorCityMechanic  9 років тому

      heavymetalcruncher awesome, glad it worked by saving you time and money which both are very important. Thanks for the shout out on where you can pick up the parts as well. Its not common to replace the NVLD pump but hopefully the dealer checked it out correctly. Time will tell. Make sure to subscribe and help spread the word by sharing these videos with others. Also...take some time to enjoy the rest of the memorial weekend!

    Thanks, that actually worked. A couple of notes:
    The upper 10 mm bolt was on very tightly but the low one wasn't. In fact I didn't need any sort of a prybar it was easy enough to turn the thing after I got that upper bolt out which leads me to believe that whoever assembled that engine was doing something similar to what you recommend. This was on a van with 106,000 miles on it so that it could not have been on its second EGR valve.
    It was not possible to reverse the process, that is, get the lower bolt all but tight and then turned the thing back with that gasket in place in such a way as to tighten the lower bolt; I needed something to let me tighten that lower bolt AFTER I had tightened the upper bolt.
    For that purpose, a straight quarter inch extension and 10 mm socket wasn't going to work. What DID work and work easily was a small quarter inch breaker bar, about 8 inches long, with a hole through the rear of the thing and the 10 inch socket. That was flexible enough to get on the lower bolt after the upper bolted been tightened, keeping the small breaker bar pretty much straight. The idea was to put a long Allen had wrench through the little hole in the back of the breaker bar and use that to cinch the lower bolt tight.

    My buddy Dan Bruch had trouble getting the socket in there..he took a small file and cleaned off just a bit of the case from the alternator for that last bolt..just took three of four hits with the file...

      Virginia Werp Thanks for the idea. I use a small shallow thin walled 1/4 drive socket and it just gets the job done. Beats unbolting the alternator for no reason. Thanks again for the comment. Make sure to subscribe if you haven't already.

    2006 caravan. Ran into a long trailer hitch. Punctured radiator condenser and damaged the EGR connector. I went to pull a part. Took off the top of an EGR. The wires were/are kicking my butt. All the colors look the same. Hate to change my EGR valve if it may work. Thanks for the information. Good job

    This pivoting trick (removing top 10mm bolt first) is highly recommended. I tried a 3/8" drive ratchet and socket to break loose the top 10mm bolt but it wouldn't budge - I would have broken a 1/4" socket for sure. I ended up using a beefy 1/2" drive ratchet and socket to break the top bolt loose. Once the EGR valve was pivoted upwards, I could loosen the bottom bolt with a 1/4" socket.

  • @sthamdan

    Thanks for the great video! I should add: as one is unscrewing that hard-to-get-to nut at the lowest point of the EGR valve, the nut might get blocked, not by the alternator body, but by the screw on the top right of the alternator. Simply get a screw driver or pliers, and nudge the EGR nut up above the screw - that should buy just enough extra room to remove the nut before hitting the alternator body.
    One question though: where is the PCV valve on the chrysler T&C? I cannot find it... You have a good overview of the engine at 2:15. Where can I find it there?

    I'm a fleet mechanic now, but come out of a back ground of mechanics my entire life nearly. This was a well done video. I too have a channel on UA-cam. Realworldgarage and on FB. Most of my stuff is vintage outboard stuff and a classic mustang I'm redoing for a friend. It's good that you are putting these out here for folks, they really get upset sometimes about the cost of repairs, when they should be upset with the engineers that designed the stuff we have to figure out how to work on!!! Again great video. See ya Brian down in good ole Mississippi

    Hello and thank you for the video. So, here's my question. I got into an accident and the lady hit me all along the right side but did worse damage to my right tire, suspension, etc. This code came on too. I just bought the vehicle 5 days from it being hit. Is it possible that when she hit me she could have damaged this as well? or shook it out of place?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 років тому

      Hard to say for sure. Anything is possible in a hard impact. Unless there was some wiring damage during the accident. Another possibility is that being that you just bought it.....someone had a problem before and cleared the code.....now it just came back on.

    Hi, love this video. Do you have one for the PCV valve as well? I've got a 3.8L T&C with high oil consumption and figure I may need to change the pcv valve. Thanks!

    David, I Like your instructions... My question is about my 2004 Town & Country 3.8 ltr. My dealer in Fla tells me that they found injector #2 stuck open. They say they cleaned it and reinstalled it, but there are no signs of the intake being removed. The STI LL had PO172 ran compression test found Cyl # 5 with 0 compression. Is it possible to remove the injector with out removing the intake? Is this something you have seen before? Please help, I need to get this running for my Grand daughter.... Thanks Airborne!

    hi
    would like to add a follow up to my inquiry below. successfully removed my PCV valve with some free nylon rope/line from home depot by double looping the rope around the nipple, grabing hold of the line with a pair of needle nose plyers and leveraging off the engine block then popping it up. the engine was still hot after driving it to normal temps and letting it cool for a half an hour. code 0507 persisted. checked on wenesday that all the bolt were tight on the erg tube and valve. Saturday morning just before i was about to take it to the machanic i reached under the hood and felt were the tube and valve meet. On a 2009 3.8 the valve is not it plain sight, it is torward the back of the engine by the fire wall. i did not install the tube gasget correctly and this was disrupting the flow back to the crankcase. since fixing i have been OBD code free. i wanted to share this in case anyone else runs in to similar complications.

    i did a friends and van ran fine. but the next day problems came back. I have since cleaned all connections to the egr valve and also add cat converter cleaner. im just lost what else to do. The throttle response is still off and take long to accelerate and does not hold a throttle unless i let off the gas pedal. revs but doesnt respond when pressing the gas. any input would be greatly appreciated thanks!

      What I can quote you is the labor hours which is approximately 1.0 at what ever the local shop labor rate is. The price for the part at your local dealership is approximately $123.00. So if local rate is $100.00 per hour for example then bill am would be around $223.00

    I will let the PB worker for a day or two. If it doesn't work, I will return the new EGR valve and replace the alternator.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 років тому

      If you can....let me know the year, make, and model......also the code number your getting. Last.....is it an aftermarket part or a Mopar replacement?

    • @danielguzman8346

      P0404 "bad egr valve" 06 chrysler town and country 3.3l . my car had the same code 7 months ago i took to the mechanic and he replaced the egr valve. The same code came back yesterday after 7 months. I was told to replace the egr valve again.. I used a an aftermarket egr valve i paid like $90 for it

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 років тому +2

      @@danielguzman8346 I have no faith in aftermarket parts. I would try a Mopar version and then see if any issues. When an aftermarket part is used and you have issues.....you can spend alot of time checking things only to find out its that sensor again but this time because it was cheaply made.

    Is that hard to loosen or remove the alternator so you have more to work?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  9 років тому +1

      not really, but when your working on commission, you come up with the fastest way so as to stay productive. Otherwise you have to remove the belt which means also removal of the splash shield. Then 3 bolts if I remember correctly on the alternator mounting it to the block and then disconnecting the battery and cables at the alternator. If you have plenty of time and what to tackle the extra steps to go to it. Otherwise I would try to save some time and less steps. Thanks for the comment and question.
