I did this job yesterday. There actually is no clearance problem in removing or replacing the pump. Once all the mounting bolts are removed, align the pully so it slips OVER the pump shaft and up against the pump body. Now the entire unit comes ut with ease. The same applies for installing the new pump.

If it's helpful to anyone here's a way to reinstall the pump without the pulley in your way. Remove the pulley and pump as an assembly like this gentleman showed us. I personally hate trying to install parts with another part dangling off it. There's so many things that can screw you. For one the gasket could come out of position, ( happens all the time to even the best of us technicians) the gasket could fall out and you not notice it, the bolt holes are super hard to line up with the damn pulley hanging off.
Anyway, what I do on these and because I personally own this exact model van is, I reinstall the pump with some rtv securely holding the rubber gasket in position and reinstall the five 10mm bolts. Then you get a separate floor jack with a wood block positioned completely centered on the jack and slowly jack up til it's just firmly against the oil pan. Then remove the three 15mm bolts from engine mount under the air box. This can be done without removing the box with an impact 15mm swivel. Then remove only the long 15mm bolt head and nut from the front center engine mount. Slowly let the engine down by super cautiously lowering your floor jack. The pump will lower enough that you can use a pry bar between the frame rail and the tensioner to slip the pulley over the end of the water pump. Reinstall the 3 bolts as much as you can by hand. Reinstall the belt and tighten them down. Then jack the engine back up slowly til you can reinstall the long 15mm bolt through the front center engine mount then thread the three 15mm bolts under the air box back into the mount and you want to tighten them up so the marks from their previous positions are back as close to the same position as possible. It sounds like a lot but it literally took me another 20 mins of work. Saves so much irritation. Later.

  • @jeffbguarino

You have to be careful removing the 10mm bolts holding the pump. I broke one off and could not get the broken piece out. Then I read about it and you should use lubricants and slowly work the bolts out by loosening and retightening. If you just force them , they get hot from the resistance and break. I only had one break and put a small clamp in place of the bolt but it was pretty crappy. It worked but I didn't like it.

Thanks for sharing. Usually the toughest part of the job is figuring out what tool setup to use. The use of the ratchet strap was brilliant! Now that I know what to expect under there and which tool to use it “should” be a piece o’ cake. I ordered an AC Delco pump with a metal impeller instead of the original plastic impeller. Oh by the way other you-tubers have replaced the stock Grade 5, 10mm bolts with Grade 8 (metric class 10.9) because they tend to corrode and break when you try to loosen them.

Get about 6 feet of 1/4" plastic tubing and after taking the radiator cap off stick the tubing down into the radiator and syphon the coolant out into a bucket or jug. Not so much mess and easier than opening the drain plug. R

OE piston rings cost just about the same as pistons. Needs new pistons they come with rings. No need to go full rebuild, everyone can do whatever they want but it only NEEDS taken apart to do pistons then timing chain and tensioner are checked real main seal replaced with all other gaskets, water pump, turbo linkage, starter -wiring / motor mounts checked or replaced. I can’t afford to drive that far but most people around the Midwest I might be able to help. yo, naptown tuner....did moving the engine over cause any ill effects to the cv axles or exhaust or anything for that matter? did you move it back?
one or two videos suggest removing or at least loosening the passenger side motor mount. if i was to decide to do that why would i support the engine on the oil pan? it seems as though it would smash it. obviously the pump has been changed on this van before bcuz one of the bolts on the pump itself was replaced with a smaller, longer bolt with a nut.
no time for this unmentioned bs in the repair book and less time to redo it bcuz of a leak, and damn sure no money to buy a different car right now.

these ease or difficultly of these coming out on their own does have to do with the YEAR, what ever year your working on, is NOT the same as my 06 TC. i have a pipe in the way of strap and my alternator bracket is NOT the same, i think some things ARE different after sto n go, the clearance between pump and frame is LESS that what i see here, and my engine did NOT move with a strap. pump only goes in come out ONE way, the mount holes NEED ro be in the right position to get enough (Millimeters) clearance to go in/out. ive put new pump in (struggle) then realized pulley HAS to be on pump... GREAT ! so had to take out. (i just bought the van because had a leaking pump and didnt want to pay $400 to shop)

F*ck the engineers. Seriously, 1/4 of an inch more and I could get everything. The pulley, the rear bolt... even the swing of the ratchet landed on a sharp corner every time. Every key I type hurts my fingers today.
I ended up dropping and raising the engine to get what I needed but it seems so simple to either add access holes through the frame or shift the engine over a sliver.

Yep...the brilliant Mopar engineers did not design in enough clearance to remove the pulley from the pump. Just great. Aircraft engineers are even worse about that. My fondest wish from my years on the flightline was to get my hands around the neck of an aircraft engineer.
