  • Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he shows how to track down, diagnose and repair the infamous check engine light on this 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan that has a code P0404 "Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Range/Performance" stored in it. Sure you could slap an EGR valve on it but let's be 100% certain!

    I have an ‘07 Grand Caravan 3.8 with 186K miles. Just replaced the cat. Now I have a P0404 code. I replaced the EGR Valve once in ‘21 but I’m pretty sure I went cheap. I appreciate you commenting that it’s a normal fault. I will try my hand at using a test light. I will also disconnect the battery overnight to ensure everything resets. I didn’t know about that. I sure appreciate your channel and videos. I know my van is dorky but I really love it… and it’s paid for. Thank you very much!!

    On my 2006 Dodge Caravan I change my EGR and it was ok for awhile and code came back, so put in a factory EGR. And that lasted for two weeks brought to a shop like yours and he said it was a block exhaust system that was making the EGR. Act up,found the. Blockage in the cat replace it been good ever since.

    Great video...., went aftermarket on my van and sure enough, light on within a month while driving to FLA. got back, put the OEM in and haven't had a problem in two years. Swapped out the ten millimeter mounting bolts with allens! Great diagnostics! Two thumbs up

    Awesome video. Tremendous nugget of knowledge at 24:15 - watch the manifold pressure reduce as the egr valve opens. EGR diagnosis is tough because in many cases you cannot determine if it is sticking until the DTC light goes on but now, watching the MAP read out you can!

    Had code P0404 on my 05 Ram last year and replaced the EGR with an aftermarket EGR that I bought at O’Reilly’s. Here I am a year later with the same P0404 code. It had 89k miles last year when I replaced it and it now has 98k miles. So yeah, go with OEM when it comes to the EGR valve on a Dodge/Chrysler vehicle.

    Take the top 10mm out, then take a pry bar between the alternator and egr valve and rotate the valve towards the rear. This not only gives better access to the bottom bolt, but also loosens at the same time.

    Thank you for this video, our '05 T&C (3.3L) hit 212k a few days ago, and surprised me with a double-whammy of stuck-closed throttle and P0405 on the way home tonight. Just a few days after I popped the radiator in my Camry (340k) and figured I'd fix the exhaust system while waiting for the radiator to come in... And snapped two of the 3 studs at the manifold flange, so the radiator arrived before the new exhaust manifold that I now had to order. And a few weeks before that, my '01 4Runner punched a shock right through the shock mount. MERRY FREAKIN' CHRISTMAS TO ME, 2020 can't end soon enough!
    (And yes, I just ordered a MOPAR EGR valve for the van, because I prefer to make repairs ONCE.)
    And you're right about BWD. In a matter of three months, I went through 7 - SEVEN - BWD mass airflow sensors. Some of them lasted a few days, some a week or two... Bought Delco and drove that car another 80k until the intake manifold gaskets blew at 238k.
    And my '88 Cutlass Ciera? Oil pressure gauge sending unit, from BWD, lasted four days before it made my gauge do some crazy pinwheel actions, and I pulled the plug on it. BWD Park-Neutral switch? Dead on Arrival - no backup lights unless I went from Neutral to Reverse - never from Park to Reverse. Sometimes the backup lights would flicker if I shifted to L1. BWD Coolant Temperature Sensor? Well, I fixed that issue with always running Open Loop for a few months, before that failed too. Before I could fix it again, a drunk driver totaled me out.

    I like the comments about the DRB being "old school" It was better than any other scan tool in the day for Chrysler. It was prone to freezing however as it didn't like minor voltage spikes at all. Well done video, Eric.

    The wife and I almost stopped by your shop yesterday to meet you and Vanessa to say HI, but we were short on time. I had to deliver a Lexus out to Buffalo, and were going to swing down 390 there on the way back, but unfortunately we were on a limited time schedule. I have a case of Wearever Brakeclean with your name on it as a THANK YOU for all your help in the vids, and in the comments section - I'll get out there one of these days. :)
    Now I see why cars rust the way they do out there. HOLY CRAP I have NEVER IN MY LIFE seen so much brine on a highway EVER!! Thruway was PURE WHITE!! Wtf!! Had to scrape that crap off my trailer lights whenever I stopped! I hit the pressure washer in my town on the way home, so my stuff will live to see another year, lol. And boy are those troopers sneaky, sitting in the median there waiting to pounce - I think I need a brake job now after the 10 times I had to jack on my brakes from 80mph ... HAHAHA!
    Wow that DRB is massive! Electronics sure have come a long way ... or maybe not (freezes up, LOL!).
    Loved your Loctite / cross thread comment - I almost hosed the iMac down with coffee! :D
    Getting hammered with snow here now. Brunt of the blizzard is just hitting us. Stay warm digging out, brother!

    I owned an '06 Dodge Grand Caravan with the 3.8 liter. We bought it at 40,000 miles and it would use a quart of oil every 1,500 miles; no smoke, no fouled plugs, and no drips. Dealer told me it was within acceptable range (1 quart per 1,000 miles). The forums also talked a lot about 1/10th of the 3.8 liter motors using oil. Have you seen this at your shop?

    • @jameskirby9369
      @jameskirby9369 3 роки тому +1

      I used to use a quart every 1000 miles on my 08 town & country. Turns out the valve covers were leaking but it never leaked to the ground and didn’t smell like burning oil. I haven’t been losing any oil since the valve cover gaskets were replaced...strange!!!!

  • @Arieeeee
    @Arieeeee 7 років тому +1

    Very cool. My car's EGR system has a modulator and VSV that I've had to deal with a couple of times and was always wondering why they don't just have the computer control it and cut out the middle man. After watching this video, I'm kind of glad mine is mostly just vacuum tubes that need cleaning from time to time than electronic parts that can go bad.

    EGR valves on Ram trucks are a nightmare...lay across the engine against the fire wall, try to bolt the tube back on while taking turns going at it from the top then from the bottom then drop a bolt lose it for 10 min in the suspension...haha

  • @YouSpamTard
    @YouSpamTard 4 роки тому +1

    Thanks. Between you, scanner danner, wells, go tech, fordtechmakuloco, and that russian guy with the adhd (haha), I have learned a ton. Recently I got a hantech scope. I have learned to graph with our snap on solus and save the files to a pc desktop for study at home. I got a killer ford explorer with the same symptoms as a taurus you worked on that I can't figure out. I am not even sure if its a misfire, an engine airflow problem, or maybe even a transmission problem. EEEk. On the Caravan we have in our shop now, I did all of what you have done here and everything was good, so I put in an egr valve. It did not respond so I cleaned the old one and re plugged it in and it did respond at least some. Its a made in china part bad right out of the box is what it is. You buy two egg rolls and you buy two egr's. My usual google search would be something like "tps repair south main auto". In the last month I nailed three correct diags for pcm replacement. I got a buick enclave or whatever it is to work on tomorrow and it has a key code p3055 and a no communication with ecm u0100 and I bet I know what "direction", as you say, to go. Description of operation first and code setting criteria second. I learned this from you. Thank you sir.

      @@brianoconnell7266 what I did was use carb cleaner and spray inside the port of the EGR. Of course I let it soak in there for a little while, and the straw attachment is your best friend, USE IT.

    I had to replace an EGR valve on a 2001 Astra but I had to make 100% certain that it was the problem. I was able to have a laptop connected to the OBD2 port and when the problem occurred it was showing the EGR valve working intermittently so I knew it was the problem. I replaced it with an OEM unit made by Delphi (I was able to source one at a reasonable price) which is still going strong to this day with the car's current owner (it now belongs to my partner's daughter and her hubby). The aftermarket ones are a waste of money. I hope this one won't bite you.

    I have a 2005 Pacifica that is throwing a p0404 that the dealer's mechanic can't fix (I just bought this car and the last time their 3rd party mechanic tried to work on it, they had it for 3 weeks and called me to come get it as they can't fix it and are refusing to work on it anymore as the dealer isn't paying them after multiple misdiagnosed "fixes", including replacing the cat). One quirky symptom is that the code will sometimes clear when I gas up the tank. I got it to clear one time just by taking the cap off and putting it back on again. The clear on fillup only works when the system is cold. Someone mentioned to me about a similar problem in Nissans that requires dropping the tank to fix. Also, this Pacifica has the problem of the saddlebag gas tank going from half full to empty (something about a crossover pump or hose not working or plugged so it's not transferring gas to the pick up on the "top" half of the tank). Does this sound familiar?

    Tune in for parts 2 thru 5, where Eric O. extracts the broken EGR bolts, then must Heli Coil 1 of the bolt holes, then removing the exhaust manifold- to have the crack welded that was caused by a broken bolt...LOL

    Hey Eric. My wife had a 2007 Grand Caravan and I replaced the egr valve three times over 7 years. Everything on that van from the water pump, rear AC, egr valve, warped rotors, sliding door harnesses, door actuators, and suspension parts failed at some point. My only thing that I never figured out was the disappearing quart of oil every month and all Chrysler would tell me that it was normal losses on the 3.8. Did you see this or find the solution to the problem? I only heard that some of the engines were assembled with piston rings upside down.

      pour in heavier oil add motor honey, or best yet replace the vehicle :)

      +kj197734 It sounds like my 07 Caravan. The only thing I haven't replaced yet is the EGR valve. They all use a bit of oil as they have low tension rings for better fuel mileage. I don't think it worked.

    It's funny, I've looked and looked on my 2004 dodge dakota for an EGR valve but I don't think there is one. They're kind of hard to miss it's a steel pipe going from the exhaust manifold to the intake/throttle body with the tin man's schlong attached to it. Guess we don't care as much about emissions in Canada XD

    looked like an idle control valve. I bought one on my tarus wound up being wrong type car would idle at 40 mph. Call ford they said they had changed to configuation on my type car . Found one that looked like the one I had and car runs great. One issue I did do and I dont know if I set it right tho, The screw that adjusts the air flow on the throttle. I set up my scanner tool and turned the screw(because dummy me not thnking that may have been it) anyway set the screw til it touched then looking at scanner which reads in percentages turned the screw from 16% all the way closed til it moved it to 17.3% So not sure if that is right but thats where I got it.afraid to open it up anymore.

    New toy DRBIII? How's it been working? What air ratchet is that...did you ever get your Astro back? Nice quick diagnosis & repair. Do you have an Auto Zone nearby b/c some of their Duralast parts are made by Wells & are actually Well products rebranded with Duralast PNs? Found out that lil tidbit of info when a mouse whispered in my ear. Their Duralast EGR valves for the Chryslers is made by Wells which I didn't know until a few weeks ago. I was staying away from Duralast b/c I didn't have good luck with them a few years ago but when I went to get a Duralast MAP sensor from them b/c the dealer was out and inside the box was a Wells. I thought someone put it in the wrong box & I got a gift. Now I go to all their Duralast parts and look at the description and if it's made by Wells and they have it I actually prefer to use them over OEM.

      Duralast products are engineered and manufactured by Wells Vehicle Electronics, a leading global supplier of advanced vehicle electronics solutions for original equipment and replacement applications. Every component either matches or improves on the OE design to ensure fast, easy installation, superior performance and reliability. Wells offers extensive application information and technical support via its Tech Line at 1-800-558-9770. This is from Autozones website,did not know that thanks for the info.

      Not all Duralast products are Wells only some of them. You have to go into the Duralast description and if they are it will say so and when you open up the package you'll be greeted by the Wells name. Wells IMO is better than OEM and I've never had a Wells product fail!

      Maybe try to clean up all the ground connections, could be high resistance path to ground pushing up voltage readings..
