Getting to the shifter cable is NOT that easy what did you remove to get it off the bracket or how do you take it off the bracket. I can't even get my hands near mine on my 08 Jeep Wrangler.
I am not a Jeep fan. BUT you are the only person that actually showed exactly where this shifter is located and exactly where it's located. The only thing that was messed up was your fingers were in the way when you were underneath.. Great job
id like to add. wait till the muffler is cool. and on my model 2007 JK. , I have to remove cross member to get up into. the shifter. always carry zip ties, you never know when your going to need them :)
Thank you very much for the video. I was able to fix this myself. For those not mechanically inclined, you can do this! As stated below, go to Autozone and buy the Dorman Shift Linkage Bushing kit, PN 14055. I paid $10.99 for it. Use the clear bushing, it's identical to the one installed by the factory. The linkage is even with the front of the front door on the driver side. I used a straight/flat head screwdriver to remove the shifter cable from it's holder so I could drop the end of the eyelet fitting down to remove/install the bushing. The old bushing came out with a the help of a screwdriver. I used some grease/lube and a pair of channel-lock pliers to put the new busing into the shifter cable eyelet. Then I put that onto the nipple for the shift lever. Done! That easy!
Thank you so much for this video. Thank goodness I watched this before I tried tearing out the center console! You are doing jeep owners a service! I was able to fix it in ten minutes.
I don't understand how it is so easy for these videos to get to this bushing. I have this problem now and it is hard to get to. Am I missing something? Did you remove the front drive shaft and exhaust / crossmember?
No telling how many people have been ripped off because of this cheap design by unscrupulous mechanics and dealerships. Pray for your enemies and heap coals of fire upon their heads, they will be judged.
This works like a charm, dorman 14055 from autozone does the trick, I needed a screwdriver to help get the bushing in the ring on the cable, then push it onto the shifter. Thanks for the video and part number peeps! 2010 Jeek wrangler JK
i have a jeep wrangler unlimited 2009 sports and i am witnessing same problem here in Australia. i went to a jeep dealership in Adelaide and they said me i need to buy whole transmission cable which will cost me about $ 175 for the damage of just i think around $10. can you please help me out with any suggestion....
I can’t thank you enough for making this video. I was able to fix my Jeep in the middle of the night instead of being stranded and having to call a tow truck, be without my vehicle for a day or two, and pay an auto shop a lot more than fixing this problem actually requires. Seriously, brother - my sincerest thanks. You’re awesome.
I need help finding out fix my shifter with my clutch feel like it went out but I found a little orange little plastic piece I have a truck that's at 2000 and 1996 Ford Ranger XLT no flex have little orange piece that I found
It was pretty much impossible to get the bushing into the rod, I used silicone spray and it didn't help really at all. I tried for about an hour, and found that using my fingers to somewhat set the bushing, then using flat head screwdriver to push it through all the way finally worked.
Like others have said it’s damn near impossible. I had to trim the lip on one end or side of the bushing to get it to go in without crushing and destroying the bushing. Be careful not to trim too much if that’s what you decide to do. After that it went in a lot easier and then all I needed to do is click it back onto the shifter stub. Really a terrible design for a vehicle that was made for off-roading. You’d think something as important as the vehicle’s gear shifting would be a part that is bolted together not just clicked into place.
I can not get the damn arm over the bushing. I see that you put it on the gear selector then fit the cable over it. All I keep doing is distorting the bushing. Is it really that pn#14055? That's exactly what I bought.
14055 clear bushing does work....I just did mines on a 2010. It is a pain to push it in and it does distort (its somewhat flexible) on its way in place...use a small screwdriver to push in the edges. Once in, it looks factory. I snipped some material off the edges to help, and it's still secure...I wish I didn't snip any material in retrospect. On some later models, you may need to unclip the shift cable that's attached to the transmission bracket shown at 1:59 on the right so that the cable hangs down past the drive shaft for more space to work.
I finally fixed it! It took 2 days and hours of frustration but you can do it! Buy the Dorman shift linkage bushing P/N: 14055 and disconnect the cable from the bracket. It should be 2 little curved clips that hold the cable onto the bracket. Then you will be free to move the cable around and have more space. Use curved needle nose pliers and press firmly!! It takes some pressure and I got worried I was warping the plastic. Even press throughout the bushing and it will squeeze through the circle thing. Then getting it onto the nipple (the gear thingy) is super easy. I watched tons of these videos and couldn’t figure out how to do it. You need the right tools. I also used a flathead screwdriver to evenly push around the bushing.
THANK YOU so much for posting this helpful and informative video! My Jeep has only 4,500 miles, yet I was stranded and had it flatbed towed back to the house. It would indicate Drive on the dashboard, although shifter could be moved to different gears. You helped me locate the issue. This simple, little, flimsy plastic piece under the Jeep had simple broken and was the culprit. Pride learning this DYI versus taking to dealership, time without vehicle, cost, etc. Thank you again!
unfortunately can't get bushing on. 4wd in the way and cant get leverage. mechanic going to make some money - prob $400 just to tell me that it needs a bushing
I had the same issue with my 2007 Jeep Rubicon, but fortunately my cable had come disconnnected at the shifter somehow. I was able to pop up the cup holder part of console and pop the cable back on. I did buy the bushings though just in case the bushing broke underneath.
I have an 04, pretty much same problem, but mine still have the plastic bushing on the transmission, i can't put the shifter cable back on, so I went out and bought a new one. How do I get the one that's on there off, so i can put the new on one?

Amazon sell the 14055 bushings for $8.99 also but it says they don't fit a wrangler but they do!

Amazing video thank you I fixed in ten minutes…
Snap it on the lever first and then push the cable on it. Way easier than this!

Good video, had to fix mine today. Thanks to everyone in the comments who recommended Dorman #14055 at auto parts stores! You guys are the real MVPs.
Nobody explains how to get the old bushing out. Mine is in solid and cant even pic it out with a jewelers screwdriver.

96 ford ranger XLT clUctH problems maybe just the bushings???? HElp

Not the same for Jeep Liberty. I can barely see the linkage itself and shift mechanism is behind a cross brace and is "feel only for man hands!"
How did you slip that bushing in? I am having a hard time slipping it in
Alex Zuniga they are next to impossible to slip in without a clamp
It was pretty much impossible to get the bushing into the rod, I used silicone spray and it didn't help really at all. I tried for about an hour, and found that using my fingers to somewhat set the bushing, then using flat head screwdriver to push it through all the way finally worked.

how the hell do you slip under like that>\? cant find it
ah! got it. mine was darker and hidden. awesome vid!

I have a 2008 Jeep Wrangler and I just payed $347.98 for a new cable. I just got fu"""". Lol it only had 70,000 miles. Dealers suck.
yes they sell the whole cable on Amazon for $50
I have an 04, pretty much same problem, but mine still have the plastic bushing on the transmission, i can't put the shifter cable back on, so I went out and bought a new one. How do I get the one that's on there off, so i can put the new on one?
Thanks! Exact same thing on my 2008 Wrangler in the driveway right now!
How did you put the bushing in? I am having a hard time pushing it in
+Alex Zuniga I was getting so frustrated with it. I had to shave a little off the rim on the side I was pushing in. It hasn't failed... yet.
+Clay Allred thanks, I'll try that.
Thank you very much. This helped me so much!
what is the part number on the bushing package you used ???
14055 Dorman , sells on Amazon for $8.99
God I love UA-cam thank u sir!!
would this make grinding noises when pressing the brakes??
John Kennedy no you need new brakes
The grinding noise when you apply the brake is probably the Aubs hydrolic control unit needing replaced.
You the man, thanks
what is the part number to that package
