OMG, I can't believe you covered my beloved Iyer Idly !
For 4 years straight, when I lived in Bangalore, specifically in Vignana Nagar, every Sunday this was my breakfast. This is literally the most underrated eatery in Bangalore. They're clean, they're lean and they taste the best !
Thank you Vice for covering this, you brought back such fond memories !!!
Their story is awesome too, I wonder how you found them. I also fondly remember the barber in the same lane who used to give my crappy haircuts :D Pretty nice TBH, fairly religious.
I remember the shop opened only in mornings, and man the queues were crazy ! Such comfort food, even though I'm a Delhiite :)

His dad passed onto him a sourcen of income, a cutural heritage, and the oppurtunity to be in the city he was born and brought up in.
For most of us, nothing more is required. If he can pass on these to his children, the cyclle is preserved.
Beautiful story. From a Bengali from Kolkata, I really understand his craving to stay in Bengaluru, and also let go of his so called lucrative career.

He could have started some fancy restaurant but I think he just followed his true passion . South indian cuisines are never ending and there are lot of possibilities but you should need balls to sell something like this as it's really competative to run such restaurants especially when indian people are going after arabic Chinese and Western cuisines. Thank you for preserving our culture.

Reminds me of my time in bangalore back in 2001-2003 when I was working in a BPO. I lived in a PG in Fraser Town a few houses before the mosque. As we couldn't cook and the PG owner didn't provide food, we lived on idlis/dosa from a joint that was bang opposite our PG. Dinner would be chicken kababs and rumali rotis in the eating joint located on the ground floor of the PG I was in. And mind you these were not the conventional kababs one gets in North india. Another staple to go with our dinner was the chhota coke. This food was really cheap. If I remember correctly, breakfast of idlis etc cost us just 10 rupees per head and the kakabs/rotis was about 25-30 bucks. On the odd day, we would splurge and walk up the road to a mediteranean food joint that also sold shawarma rolls. Food served at work and this food was all we lived on for a few years. Pay was shit and 4 of us were crammed into a single room with no attached bathroom. Now I'm well placed and secure and all that but i really miss my bangalore days. I gotta say bangalore and mumbai are my favorite indian cities. I also worked in delhi for some time and I can say people in the South and mumbai were/are really nice. And the idlis/dosa/sambhar! To this day, when I travel, especially in airports, my go to meal at any time of the day is idli/dosa with sambhar. I can feel my mouth salivate as I type this.

Karnataka is the birth place of idli. A precursor of the modern idli is mentioned in several ancient Kannada works. Vaddaradhane, a 920 CE Kannada language work by Shivakotiacharya mentions "iddalige", prepared only from a black gram batter. Chavundaraya II, the author of the earliest available Kannada encyclopaedia, Lokopakara (c. 1025 CE), describes the preparation of this food by soaking black gram in buttermilk, ground to a fine paste, and mixed with the clear water of curd and spices.

I am really surprised what is so good in this hotel. Tasted the idly, kesari bath and vada. Except the vada nothing else is eatable here. I would request VICE Asia to visit Bramhins Cafe, Shankarpuram, SLV in Banashankari these idlies are legends in front of Iyer Idly. I pity the residents of CV Raman Nagar that they havent tasted the idlies in the 70 to 80 years old restaurants and had to settle for Iyer idly

To the people ranting about the fact they should have only spoken in Kannada: Karnataka is in India. It is not a separate country. Though I do believe if she had spoken atleast one sentence in Kannada people would have been happier, expecting her to only speak in Kannada is not right. Because she is from TN. There are people in TN all over from India. Even from Nepal. And we do not force them to speak only in Tamil. If you people behave like this, then you will be labeled as tyrants. Like you think you own India or what? You can't dictate others. A lot of Hindi-speaking people are also in Kannada. Are you harassing them like this too? As a Tamilian I am scared to ever travel to Karnataka if this is how non-Kannada people will be harassed. I want to travel to every state in India and sample the cuisine alas it seems if you don't speak that state's lang, you will be hated. Being considerate is important.

@@harshasatyaratna4606 If that is indeed so take legal action. You speak as if Kannada ppl do not cause trouble here. Come to Hosur and see for yourself. I am not someone who endorses trouble makers no matter which state they are in/come from. All I am saying is we should discriminate people just because they speak a diff South Indian language. Both sides have suffered and I wish for peace. We should not have to be afraid inside our own country. It's ridiculous. If we are divided like this within South India, it will not take long before North Indian langs penetrate the South. Tamil Nadu is still mainly retaining our lang because we refuse to let Hindi be recognized here. With Hindi our Native tongues will disappear. I am already hearing news on how Hindi is becoming wide spread in Karnataka. Here we are stopping Hindi imposition. I am BJP supporter but I will never accept Hindi being superior in my state. Ever.
