The Legendary Dosa Man of NYC | Street Food Icons

- Опубліковано 3 кві 2019
- Thiru Kumar, AKA the Dosa Man, has been running NY Dosas, a food cart in Greenwich Village's Washington Square Park, since 2001. His dosas-which are made from fermented rice and lentils, and stuffed with potatoes, vegetables and spicy sauces-have become an international phenomenon. Thiru grew up in Sri Lanka and learned to make South Indian recipes as a child. After he immigrated to the United States in the 90s, he made it his life's work to sell affordable, fresh and vegan dosas to NYU students, professors and other passerby's.

I really think americans MUST stick their head out of the sand. You're so into that ultra capitalist bs, the individualism and know so little about the actual world; that genuinely scares me. The strong majority of people who's from a third world or developing country (me included) will NEVER make you feel guilty for something like that. If I have two dollars in my pocket and you need one, I'm gonna give it you regardless and I'll never bring that up or ask you for something back. I'm Albanian and in the last 30 years we went through the fall of the regime, civil wars, the genocide of Albanians in Kosovo and a state scam. My parents were almost killed by human traffickers trying to go from Greece to Italy, they still taught me how to treat people with respect and dignity no matter what.
Wow
@@mateoverjo860 It's not about actively MAKING someone guilty, it's a guilty conscience that one has. Most people here won't make you feel guilty about it, but everyone will remember it.

A South Indian/Sri Lankan restaurant opened in my hometown Bremen a while ago and I just love it there. Lots of Indian restaurants in Germany are North Indian, so I did not really know much about South Indian cuisine.
South Indian cuisine is more Indian because invaders destroyed north Indian culture and experimented cuisines but outcomes were really tasty for non vegetarians. nothing is permanent, if you are born poor it is not permanent. you can become successful and happy in the future. if he is subjected to the statement "you should be happy with what you've got" what is the point of leaving Sri Lanka and came all the way to NYS? he should have been satisfied with what he has in Sri Lanka itself!.

Yeah this isn’t my first time here
Yea especially when I eat dosas
Yes, especially when I'm eating dosa which is common as peas in Singapore. Every Indian stall within a mile has it.
You know he's well integrated in NYC with how set phrases like "you got it, brother," and "you know wh'm sayin'?" come out with the certain intonation and feel. That's just proof he's part of NYC and can't be replaced.
I remember being in NYC, (for "traveling" purposes) and while I was there, I saw the Dosa Man and his friend/family member, pulling everything off of the back of a trailer at the time, [this was in 2014, November] and as I was walking past, they looked like they needed a bit of help.. I usually say 3 people helping [with the weight of it all] and instead of-
"choosing to just, keep walking by", and instead of rationalizing in MY mind- "they'll get it", I saw a "what COULD go wrong" sort of vision, so I was "nudged" to help.
When we got it all off of the truck, he kept telling me- "no, stay I fix you meal, please".
The first time, I ducked out because I was late for a meeting, less than 10 mins late.
The 2nd time he caught me passing by, he RAN over and PULLED me back to his cart, to give me a dish! His samosas are phenomenal & the layering of his sauces, an explosion on your tastebuds!
While I was eating nearby on a bench, he came over and asked- "why you don't like Indian foods? I don't cook junk food, you see no chips right?"
There was a moment, in what seemed like hours of time, where our "sparks" had recognized one another. "Maybe from another time", as he referred to it..
As I explained it had nothing to do with the type of food, but more with the time of day which I consumed foods- that's when he mentioned, "the reflection of choice & deciding".
This gentleman's heart, is far grandeur than a lot of things I had seen in NYC, during my time there. Although, many may "perceive" the city as, "dingy, dirty & unsanitary".. it remains in the "seerers field/view", the opportunity to:
- #PurposelyChooseToSeeLight
..even, when surrounded by darkness.
What, "innate seerers" can see, the level at which one can "recognize the reflection", embodying the grandeur, fractal & interconnectedness of "all that is", has become more of an "action based", conscious embodiment OF truth, in the reflection of- free will & subjective reality and by how one "intentionally chooses to decide, to NOT allow #PersonallyNegativeEffected experiences, to turn them "bitter".
But to instead- #GoAgainstTheGrain2022 of that which, should have NEVER "been allowed", a space/time in the mind or heart.
Realizing the difference, is but a stone in the greater pond of ALL.

Nothing is permanent in this world so you got to be happy ; dosaman NY
But isn't that true? Selling Dosas for a living doesn't mean he knows life any lesser
@@ayushj76 ya so much true ; he motivates me in some aspects . Maybe i will also start some soft idly and ghee dosa stalls somewhere 😍😍

An immigrant who sells dosas with a daughter in Columbia. Wholesome. Hope he’s doing alright in the pandemic with an online gig or something.
More than likely he had enough saved to make it through hard times. He probably lives simply and puts money away. He is that kind of person.
Yeah he is selling dosa online.............. you can download the pdftoo
@@zink5664 I believe she meant a delivery app

You can see just how proud he was talking about his special dosa being served in India
Food is a lil bit expensive in NYC but it was so thoughtful of him to keep the prices under 10$ so that everyone can be able afford to eat. Such a nice guy 😌
No way I went to high school with his daughter. Glad he is proud of her, both are great people!

I love dosa, especially when it’s extra crispy. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Looking forward to more videos!
Proud to see a South Indian promoting our food in NYC!! I’m an American malayalee- this brings a smile to my face :) all the best to you! I hope I’ll be able to visit your food cart one day.
He is Srilankan Tamizh
We should crowdfund him a food truck
Agreed this man deserves it
Good point.
Naaa... I think that food cart is his trademark..
You can't park a truck in the park.
Maybe he likes how everything is, that’s why it’s been like that for almost 18 years
His food is soooo good. Fresh, perfectly seasoned, not salty, and the price is just right. I can’t wait to be able to go back to visit.
Does he still sell...
Jealous... Want to go to New York someday and when I do I'm gonna be sure to visit this guy
@Kaleb and you still called it expensive. Bruh it’s normal price is what I’m sayin
See is good man hindi meanings
His price is actually not right at all. You could buy the same thing in India for less then a dollar with more variety and a great taste. I understand that the price varies in the US so he could increase the one dollar to 4 or 5 max. Anything more than that is just pure inflation.
The ideal immigrant to any country. Respectful, hard-working and shares his own culture/cuisine with the community around him.
Whenever I am sad and I complain I come here....and feel good about myself...:)

If you knew how many chemicals that they use on potatoes in the USA I would say you need less, or even better none.
'According to the USDA's Pesticide Data Program, 35 different pesticides have been found on conventional potatoes. The chemical that is found on 76% of all conventional potatoes is chlorpropham, an herbicide that is used to stop the growth of weeds and to inhibit potato sprouting.'

Gid He’s right. He’s black, he’s from a different country and culture than the majority in the US. He’s hard working, all people love him and he’s making money by literally cooking in a park in the most expensive city of the country.
Gid He ain’t no gangbanger, not looking for easy bucks, just focused on his family and his job. “Systemic racism” is the excuse for people to justify their bad choices.
That's what a true American really is .. . Worked hard and made a life for him and his kids .. he's more American than most American people I know

The average price of masala dosa:
India - 75 rupees(little over a dollar)
New York Greenwich Village - 69 rupees(1 dollar)
Kudos to you sir...! You are the example of indian hospitality.
I appreciate the low pricing NYC dosa, but sir you should not eat at your masala dosa at your shop...they are way too much charging.....and you are saying that's average...
@@VamsiKumpatla You misunderstood what I meant by average. It's not about the dosa instead it's about the average price across India.
Sorry to say this, but your point which you think is not properly conveying through your terms . You've got to build your English communication skills mate!
