I fly Qatar Airways (economy, long haul). Can confirm the food is quality 👌🏼 bread is always fresh and warm. There's starter, main course, and dessert. Many options for hot and cold drinks. and 3-piece cutlery is stainless steel not plastic. And they cater to a lot of health and religious dietary restrictions (you do need to indicate this in advance while booking the flight).
I feel they didn't properly communicate how even getting a tiny baggy of peanuts is far from guaranteed on US flights. Especially if it's a shorter flight, like under 2 hours. Even then, it's almost never namebrand and like half the size of the bag they showed in the video (I know it was almonds, but the ones I usually get are like the size and amount of a tiny Halloween fun-size pack of M&Ms), in my experience with a few of the airlines.
Qatar is stinking rich though. They use lots of low wage immigrant employees in construction and treat them like slaves, even taking their passports so they can't resign and go home. They live in slums and are not permitted to leave the area where they live, (which makes certain sense, if you don't want illegal immigrants staying beyond their welcome).
Wow, I had no idea Qatar Airways was whipping up 200,000 meals daily! 🍽 That's seriously impressive. Love seeing the behind-the-scenes action and how they keep everything fresh and delicious. Can’t wait to try some of those meals on my next flight! ✈😋

Food on Qatar airways is always a treat. Food at their lounges are delicious too. I am addicted to their eggplant dips in their Arabic mezze and can't get enough of them. Amazing in the air, but service on the ground like baggage handling is abysmal. The only two airlines that are consistent in the air and on the ground are ANA and JAL. I had the best lobster bisque at the JAL first class lounge at Narita in 2014. It was phenomenal. ❤ When I was a child, I loved flying as the food was always delicious. You always dressed in your sunday best and always minded your manners and your Ps and Qs. Everyone was always courteous, civilised and polite. Happy days back then. 😊
This is interesting since I flew Qatar airways recently to Africa. Food and service was great and $10 for Wi-Fi for the entire 12 hour flight was a real treat.
I can’t resist to make a comment on this. Yes these airlines are really awesome. There’s a reason why as well. On top of making huge profits they are subsidized by their own government. I worked at the flight kitchen in Denver in 1992 for U.A.L. At the time we were pumping out 125k meals a day. A basic economy meal cost $25 to produce and board. That was 1992. You can see why food went away as it was mostly due to cost and customers wanting cheap fares.Furthermore, our U.S. airlines have been petitioning for years to level the playing field as these M.E. airlines can lose money on routes without a care and driving U.S. business away. Since that point in 92 I educated myself to become an instructor for the B787 so I know what I am talking about. That said it is an amazing accomplishment to produce food at that level.
I also have a soft spot for Asian cuisine 😊 best in flight meal I ever had was on a Korean airways flight, bibimbap (mixed veggie beef rice bowl ), it was honestly one of the best dishes I can recall ever eating in my life
Qatar airways contracts LSG Sky Chefs, at least when they're flying from America. I used to work at an airport and I've definently seen their carts at an LSG kitchen.
Business insider is so large, I think it is simply impossible they would do an Ad without disclaimer. Maybe you could call it exclusive access since most people wouldn't be able to get this level of detail, but no way its paid for.
the thing about food testing different at 32,000 feet it true, you can't even breathe at the altitude, but the cabins are pressurised, but no where as much as they used to be when smoking was allowed, nor is the air circulated and swapped as much. DVT etc are only as recent as the smoking ban on planes.
Should it really be called a food desert if it’s actually a desert? Are there deserts that sustain huge populations of people with enough local produce? Am I missing something here? I’m serious, if someone knows please let me know. I think the term “food desert” can be really useful in understanding some pretty complex issues, but I’ve never heard it being used to describe an actual desert. I thought the desert part kinda speaks for itself.
That's what I was wondering too. The term "food desert" has a very specific meaning, at least here in the US, and I want to know more about where they are operating if they are sourcing thousands of pounds of fresh produce in a food desert.
Well of course they dont serve food on most flights any more. The 2 biggest reasons are its all about profits, and why serve better food when you can pocket the difference in your bonuses. And the biggest reason ? The Airline prices from the 1940-50's to now are night and day different. Back then every seat was obscenely expensive and as a result a very low % of the population could fly. So naturally the food was superb since you were serving very wealthy people who clearly paid for it. Nowadays you pay like... 50e for some flights, you are probably lucky to have a place to sit, let alone food and drink.
There were also fewer seats and a lot of stops due to lack of efficiency due to a lot of reasons. Technically speaking the price of running an airline in the 50s would've been lower with today's technology, so adjusting for inflation it's not the best comparison. Still, you're fully correct that airline fares are extremely affordable for most of the population than before and to keep prices low and competitive they cut costs like catering.
The irony. "We don't want to be regulated by the government!" [Deregulates] Costs go down for a while, but so does the quality of many other things. Now, in the last 10-15 years, "Wah, those other airlines are better because they're government regulated. It's not our fault," they say, as they're getting bailed out by the government and providing worsening services. What a joke. I'm genuinely fascinated by the collective mindset of the airline industry. It's baffling. I know 9/11 played some part in the drastic changes that have taken place historically, but it's far from the main problem many US airlines have. I started flying in the early 90s. I've seen how weird and twisted things have gotten in recent history. I'm honestly curious to know what someone who's flown since, like, the 50s or 60s thinks about how laughable this entire scenario is.
In 1955, a ticket from LA to Boston was $106 while the monthly median household income was $366. Today such a ticket costs $94 while the monthly median household income is $6717.

With certain produce, you can't do it by machine consistently. Whether it's because the food is far too delicate (as is the case with most of what they showed being hand-prepared), and they bruise or smush easily, or because the skin or whatever is too uneven between specimens to reliably peel without losing a bunch of the flesh. It could also be because the shape of the produce isnt symmetrical enough to use a machine to deal with it. There are a few reasons it has to be hand done to keep the quality of the produce. Fruits like dragonfruit, some types of melons/squash, etc. have such fragile flesh that even small bumps and uneven peeling can bruise them. Think of it like trying to have a machine peel an overly ripe banana. The level of ripe where even holding it wrong or having a finger press a tiny bit too hard creates a massive bruise and crushes the fruit inside into a mesy pulp in thay area. That's why they do it by hand most times.
