  • In the premiere episode of Family Food, we head to Swagath Gourmet, a South Indian restaurant run by the Iyengar family in Edison, New Jersey. We meet brothers Sesha and Murali as well as Murali's wife Padma, who all share a passion for bringing authentic South Indian food to the table. The lentil- and rice-based vegetarian dishes that have made Swagath a local favorite are not only delicious, but also extremely healthy. After spending time with the Iyengars in their restaurant and their tight-knit community of Edison, we see it's no coincidence that the word "swagath" means "welcome" in their native tongue. The minute you walk into Swagath, you feel like a part of the family.

    OMG, so much hate in the comments section! It's so sad how Indians pull other Indians down. Here is a family that is working 7 days a week in a foreign country, trying to preserve their culture and traditions. They offer Indians abroad a place where they can come and feel at home. All he did was explain why vegetarianism is practiced among Brahmins. He did not put down anyone else. The reasons he gave are the similar to satvik food in ayurved. The kind of caste based division of Hinduism took place for 250+ years is beyond repair, first under British for 200 years, so they can get so called lower cast Hindus to convert into Christianity and second, after independence by our politicians for their vote bank politics, so they can become Messiah of so called lower cast people and just by abusing Brahmins get their votes without doing any work on the ground.... there is so much hate in lower cast Hindus against Brahmins for no fucking reason, and some politicians and Christian missionaries are still exploiting this hatred

    Its true a vegetarian diet prevents many illness, such as diabetes, cancers, heart problems, etc. But that said because someone is a vegetarian does not mean you are going to be a Pius person, on the contrary, many of histories most vicious and violent individuals very pure vegetarians, such as Hitler, Pol Pot from Cambodia who slaughtered his own countrymen, being vegetarian is no guarentee of being peaceful, everything needs to be balanced in life. I'd argue milk is even worse than meat... impregnate a cow against her will, she lactates, offspring is born, taken away from her mother at birth, if it is male, it is sent to slaughter, if it is female, the exploitation repeats. After being milked for milk its entire life, in the fag end she is left to roam and die on the streets or sent to slaughter. The hypocrisy of our population is amazing.

    Such hatred towards Brahmins. He is just proud of his caste and he didn't degrade anybody. Also he is from older generation and the younger generation is different, please don't defame the whole community because of one person.

    • @khushalwadhawan8932
      @khushalwadhawan8932 3 роки тому +28

      There is no hatred against Brahmins. There is contention against recognizing cast, something which our constitution aims to abolish to suppress institutional racism, rather than anything personal against the man or his family. The moment we start associating cultural values with caste, we take the first step towards caste-based discrimination. Hence its all right for us to be proud of our geographical roots, being a Tamilian in this case, but not of our caste, being a "Tam Brahm".
      For perspective, imagine a video of a White old dude saying he is proud of being a white restaurant owner for 20 minutes. Your perception towards that might be very different.

      @@khushalwadhawan8932he leaders of the 1857 revolt were all Brahmins, 10 out of the 28 Indian army chiefs till date were Brahmins, it was the Brahmin Peshwas of the Maratha empire who liberated India from tyrannical invaders, Founder of R&AW was a Kashmiri Brahmin, and so was the founder of IITs. The first Paramveer Chakra awarded was also a Brahmin. Even the constitution you speak of was drafted by a Konkani Brahmin Sir BN Rao😂 So you can see we Brahmins have every right to be proud of our caste and our ancestors, as our contribution to society is immense in proportion to our 3% population. Also do note that manual scavenging was first banned in India by GS Lakshman Iyer, a Tamil Brahmin.

    I am a hardcore meat-eater but I need South-Indian vegetarian food in my life. This beautiful, hardworking family are true to their culture, providing a great service without offending anyone. I am not only a Malayalee - I am a NAIR. I am so bloody proud of it too; why shouldn't I be? The caste system is entrenched in India and although many lofty ideas have been written down in the Indian constitution, NO ONE (regardless of caste or religion) has ever legally enforced it so this man is not to blame. Just salivate at the delicacies and move on with your "bhavanaonki tokri".
