The level of sarcasm in this video is just 👌
Banding is not an issue, the image is so clean and noise free, so that subtle gradients in 8bit image would cause banding. To solve banding problem just add some grain, and banding would go off. All the other cameras don't have this because of subtle noise pattern in the images itself, but if camera gives you perfect noisfree image, there would be bandings anyways.
first time i've watched a video on this channel and its one of the better reviews for this camera i've seen, its getting harder to find unbiased + informed reviewers these days.
Cheers for the video!
+ Subbed
+pwnz01 Thank you!
+pwnz01 Thanks! :D
I love this cam
One recommendation for you, I also had that banding issue, and created a custom profile just to use in these low contrast situations. It worked a treat. Btw 1080p 50mb has far less banding then 4k at 100mb
Your jitters while using a slider may be a malfunction with the camera. I sent my copy back and got a new one and the IBIS works great. So you may just have a bad copy.
I am thinking of getting the A7S ii but the banding and rolling shutter is a stopper. Have these issues been sorted or are they still there.
This guy does the best reviews.
+Dustin Parker Thank you!
what LUT were you using during the new york footage at around 10:45? cheers! nice review- excited to see you can shoot on s log 3 at 1,600 ISO instead of base 3200 on the a7s
+Will Binks Thank you for your comment. We were using slog3. Thanks for watching!
I just bought my A7S ii and it shows up Thursday! If you buy it in Oregon, you can avoid sales tax. You can also buy it from B&H and avoid the sales tax as well(If you live outside New York.) Can't wait!
I need to use both for short video and for photo, which one might be good ? a7s II or R II ? I'm confused. I'm looking for 5d mark III for my last option. Please kindly help me guys thank you. if I shoot 1080p full frame for about 20 minutes straight will it be overheating easily ?
is canon L lens working perfectly with this body ? and how is the auto focus too from the lens ?
Hi. Great information. which are best sony fs 700r or a7s2?
Hi I have Nikon lens I watched another review which said I'd have to pay £300 for a metabones adapter is that essentially as I think there would be no electronic contacts couldn't I buy a cheaper adapter. plus could I edit in a lower resolution and then convert to a higher 4k res - is there an easier workflow for less powerful computers.
Man, I really want this camera. Q_Q
My T3i is aging in a not great way.
+EposVox Sadly Canon is not aging in a great way! No...I am not a Canon hater, just disappointed in their "Kodak-like" approach to mirrorless.
Yeah, I getcha.
How are the stills? Is there still a banding issue?
Great review!
I have been making videos by my 5D3. and i got my a7sII 2 weeks ago. I know this is a great camera for videography, but I am really frustrated by the noise. i've tried all the pp, but the noise is still there. In addition to over-exposing the shot, any other advice for me? Can I just do the coloring by FCPX without other coloring softwares like Davinci? Thanks for your help~~
FCPX's color tools aren't that great compared to DaVinci. What ISO are you shooting at? Noise shouldn't be that bad.
ISO 1600, normally. Is it better to shoot it a little over-exposed?
I just bought one a week ago. I upgraded from GH4. I must say I was a bit afraid with this purchase but I've never been happier. Yes the autofocus is not that impressive but workable. I have a Nikon D750 for stills but daily casual shooting I haven't touched it since I've got this. If you don't need the extra resolution this is a really fun camera to walk around and have snapshots with. With a manual focus lens it's reminiscent to my film shooting days. It is a joy to live with this camera and I wasn't expecting that.
+YALIM AKIN Yep. Price aside, it seems to be the camera everyone wants these days.
have you experienced the overheating issue and is the grainy image issue that noticable and problematic?
No. I tried to push it overheat. I gave up after 45 minutes. image looks fine
maybe..
+YALIM AKIN Debating vs GH4. I will be shooting outside a lot and Sony's banding is baaad. (ah I see below Slog 3 was an issue) I will probably get a Atmos Ninja for 30+ min recording times and that will eliminate overheating issue. Aside from these 2 cameras. I am also considering the Panasonic AG-DVX200. Will be doing a lot of run n gun and by the time you add all accessories needed the Sony is way more expensive.
I don't know if it would be feasible for you guys to do this or not but if you could it'd be really cool but compare this with the A7s+ the shogun and see how comparable they are and which one comes out on top since they are roughly the same price point
I want that camera with the metabones speedbooster ef to sony e!!! But unfortunately I cant' afford it...
The very last thing you need in video production is someones EGO.
I agree but I am 100% sure it was a joke.
that overheating is more of a problem than some may realize.. imagine your shooting a wedding in a part of the world with a hot climate..
+Alex S You shouldnt be shooting 4k wedding with a camera though you should be using a camcorder for wedding video. Or maybe im wrong. If you spend the same money you can get a great sony vidoe camera for 1k extra.
b depends on the look your going for..
No personal offense meant to this guy, but I feel like videos with him aren't nearly as authentic as videos with the other guys. Also, there's no mention of WHY some of the issues are there. Like no 4K in Super35 mode, when it's blatantly obvious that once you crop in 1.5x, the overall pixel space becomes smaller than that of 4K/UHD. It'd be upscaling at that point (sure, the original would let you do it when recording externally, but it's still an upscaled image which isn't ideal. I can understand that some people might not care, but it should at least be mentioned).
Point No. 2: 4:2:0 subsampling. This channel is VIDEOMAKER. Yet the smallest bit of research isn't done in some cases. The a7 sensors, like almost all large chip sensors, is a bayer sensor. Bayer sensors don't sample color in the traditional 4:2:2 way that many people think. It's, in effect, more like 4:1:1 in the way it samples color. You'd be hard-pressed to notice a difference, even in heavy grading, if it was 4:2:2 with the same compression. BUT, that's not even the main point, the point is that the BOINZ processor was manufactured to MAX-OUT at 100Mbps, 4:2:0, 8-bit at the very, very most. It wasn't ever expected to need to be able to handle high-end professional data rates and bit-depths. That doesn't mean it isn't a GREAT processor, it was just designed more around the consumer end. Here is a video of Alister Chapman (professional in the industry, for those under a rock), doing a presentation on the FS5, he speaks briefly about the 4:2:0 "issue" and touches a bit on 8-bit vs. 10-bit and compression. It's right at the 23-minute mark that he explains 4:2:0 and bayer sensors, in a very similar way to what I've mentioned above:

I love, love, LOVE this channel, and have been a follower for a long time. So my point here is not to just simply be another babbling ass**** on the internet, trying to put someone down. In fact, this very well may not even be a fault of Jason's, for he's just the presenter in the video, the talent. But what I'm wanting to stress, is that it only took me a half-hour, at most, to do some curiosity-piquing research (I actually looked this up when I got my original a7s, when everyone was comparing it to the GH4's HDMI output features).
Anyway I wrote all this out because I'm always interested in these types of details, so maybe someone will find the info or video useful.
My opinion of the rest of the video is fine, just a few things here and there...
The banding is cause by slog3 being designed for 10bit 422 not 8bit 420, shoot cine gamma or slog 2 for less banding.
+Bror Svensson Media Yes it's important to know when to use what gamma curve/picture profile with these highly compressed-codec cameras. You can get beautiful results, arguably just as beautiful as it's bigger brother and sister cameras, like the F5. One simply MUST know how these codecs, gamma curves and picture profiles work and react, and their limitations, in order to get the best results. So many newcomers do not understand this, and so they blame their own issues on random things, or on things they've heard on the internet that may be completely unrelated to their actual issue.
+Mat R "So many newcomers do not understand this, and so they blame their own issues on random things, or on things they've heard on the internet that may be completely unrelated to their actual issue."
Are you even listening to yourself? That's absolutely absurd. When a consumer buys a $3000 camera it should ZERO issues such as banding regardless of the way the photographer has his/her camera set. That's called a FLAW and they should damn well blame the camera and the manufacturer. No customer should have to conform to an overly expensive camera's issues. Please don't be a Sony fanboy. Sony will never fix issues if people like you are blaming the consumer rather than the company. Why do you think Sony released the firmware to allow the camera to shoot uncompressed RAW files? Because many people spoke up complaining about it. Sony would've done nothing had people kept their mouth's shut and did workarounds.
+Wesley Jordan Unfortunately true.
It's not as great as i thought it would be but still not a disappointment.
it would be great if they use BSI sensor so they can add little bit more resolution for still but keep the low light performance in check also PDAF for fast AF tracking.
For video i hope they can add 8 bit 4.2.2 for internal 4K recording and the slow motion video should be at S35 crop.
Can you please make a dynamic range comparison vs GH4 and NX1?
+Yudi Hilmawan Rumors are swirling that Samsung is discontinuing the NX1, so we're going to wait to see what they say at CES in January. If Samsung comes out with a new camera or an NX1 update, we'll want to compare that with Panasonic's newest as well.
Wow even more issues with the a7sII than I realized. So get a GH4 with a Metabones Speedbooster then? I'm shopping for a 4k camera to shoot a lot of outdoor beauty shots. The banding is bad.
should i replace my canon 7d with a7s mark ii ?
a7s +atomos or a7s2... the overheating issue and grainy image is problematic for true professionals ..Esp when it comes to extended recording. which would you say would be the better buy?
True professionals won't use a dslr for recording video. Film lenses and a RED still works best.
Randy Monster you are right but the amazing low light, dynamic range and denoiser in post to clean up the grain... im still interested in the a7s line as a specialty camera primarily for extreme low light situations
Hi! How can hoy grading slog3 so beautifully?
+Mario Ponce Thank you for your comment. we have a course on color correction if you'd like to take a look. About a 3rd of the videos are free. www.videomaker.com/course/color-correction Thanks for watching!
Banding is a bit depth issue and it is not a firmware update problem... Any Clue what the Bit depth is? I'd love to know what it does in S-Log3
+Diego Gilly thank you for your comment. these were shot with the max bit rate of 100 Mbps. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! Great videos always guys, very much appreciated
Could tell me 3 great lenses that I can use with the a7sii for videography. Then 2 for photography. Thanks.
+james cook Thank you for your comment. Do you want E mount lenses or lenses that need adapters? As well, what type of videography and photography are you doing? Thanks for watching!
+Videomaker I have the same questions my friend,. i was thinking in buying the sigma Art lenses the 50m 1.4 and the new art zoom 24-35 f/2 and use metabones IV. we know that the sony line up is short and much more expensive.! what do you think of the Arts from sigma ? i would love to buy one sony glass to,. don't know if the Batis 85mm 1.8 or the 24-70,.f4
we do every type of production,. so we need all kinds of lenses i found the rokinon kit cine lenses very cheap i think it was 4 different size for 1,900.! but do you think this Rokinons would do good in a A7sii ?
great videos my friend i just subscribed ..!!
I don't want people to know that I dropped a ton of money so I can keep it.
Hi, using Sony AS7 II is it possible to take pictures while recording a video? And how many minutes it supports recording? Cheers,
+Cesar Zaneti (MundoZaneti) Thank you for your comment. No dual record, its photos or video, not both at the same time. the a7sII has a 30 minute record limit. Thanks for watching!
+Cesar Zaneti (MundoZaneti) Short answer no, but you could just freeze a frame and use that frame as a picture since the photos taken by this camera is the same resolution as the video (but if you mean RAW photos then it's a definite no). And 30 mins
Sir,I was in dilemma whether to go for 7s or 7s2 , please help me,becoz colours coming out of 7s looks cinematic (1080p)
the 7s2 will be the better camera.
Thanks for the replay sir, out of two which one good for low budget film making (vintage film look in1080p)
So let me see if I've got this right with this camera I get over heating issues. does not shoot long with the 2xbatteries supplied. no 10 bit 422 and horizontal pattern noise at 8000 and 10000 iso....all for $3000.00 body only...can I ask has Sony been bought out by Canon?
+SurvivalRox Heh. Yes. I want to love this camera but it just has too many flaws. It should never ever been released in the condition it is currently in. Overheating is just not acceptable. It is a defective product that I couldn't live with. That banding is just awful and I have noticed some moire coloring problems in other videos.
You said that Sony works for new firmware with fix banding. Do You have info from Sony with this news ?
+Kamil Biegański Thanks for your comment. We said we'd like a firmware update, to our knowledge there isn't one yet. Thanks for watching!
I hope so it will be but i didnt hear about it. Maybe we create petition? :)
Easy fix to banding, use Slog2 instead of Slog3 because of A7s 8bit natur
super film
Hello,
I wanna buy a action cam but witch one is the best of all action cams?
+Unicorn Chicago watch the video we made on the GoPro and Sony Action Cams. ua-cam.com/video/XIMCcnNFmik/v-deo.html
DJI Osmo!
8 bit is an issue not to mention the limited lenses selection with their electronic focusing which makes it not so cinematic.
banding has nothing to do with firmware
....
+quanah that's what the government wants you to think
+Irun Mon ...true
If someone isn't APT enough to ASK whether or not your camera is an A7s or an A7s ii .... they don't deserve to know ;) ... Trust me, I have one and they can judge all they want about what THEY THINK THEY KNOW hahahaha
Sony really piss me off, ive looked at the a6300, a7r 2 and a7s 2 and ALL of them have big draw backs and im just not willing to part with that amount of money untill they sort it out. guess ill wait to see what the Panasonic gh7 has to offer.
a7s is glossy. a7s ii is matte.
That's the only way I can tell them apart from a distance if I see the front and it says a7s.
Bro,I was in dilemma whether to go for 7s or 7s2,becoz colours coming out of 7s is more cinematic (1080p),please help me to come out of dilemma
It's useless to have slog3, but Sony needs to do something about it, no matter what...
Sounds like the black magic camera is way better and still is in the same price range.
McDudes - Which one?
"Love chid"..."what the"...I thought this was a family show.
Please mention the 30 minute time limit. This limitation is almost never mentioned when reviewing cameras and should be the first mentioned out of the box. Sony once again is protecting their high end camcorders. I am really amazed they would do this on such a video-centric high end camera. So this says they will never uncap the self imposed lame crippled 30 minute problem in the future. I almost bought an NX1 but Samsung's 30 minute time limit was a deal breaker for my concert shooting needs. I am glad I didn't buy it since Samsung just killed their camera line and pulled out. The only option we have is Panasonic cameras to overcome this 30 minute BS.
+jeffhalebopp All Photo/video hybrid cameras have this limit, even Panasonic. It has to do with EU import taxes, believe it or not. Philip Bloom write a blog post on this a while back that explains the issue: philipbloom.net/blog/the-lumix-30-minutes-eu-recording-issue/
+jeffhalebopp One option is to get an external recorder which by passes this limit. I know it's even more money to add on, but it's a great way to get around it while still getting a cinematic image.
+Videomaker Not true. I have a USA version of the GH2. It records as long as you have memory and battery power. I can usually get 2 hrs and 10 mins in 1 take. All the non-EU GH series cameras just make another file at the 4 gb size and keep recording when using AVCHD mode. Here is my point and I wish people would understand this. I live in America and don't fall under EU tax import jurisdiction. So the 30 min time limit doesn't apply. This is just a hard coded crippling of cameras through software. And if EU people want unlimited recording time, manufactures should make it available through paying a little more tax. Laws and software limitations have nothing to do with each other. It's arbitrary just to make more money. We have been programmed to accept this time crippling nuisance without even thinking about it. A 30 minute time limit for my shooting requirements is not an option. I am so glad that at least some Panasonic models are un-crippled.
+jeffhalebopp We stand corrected about Panasonic. We did ask Canon about the 30 minute limitation a while back and why they didn't just release two versions of a camera. They said that they didn't like the option of either releasing two different versions of the same camera, or having two different prices for the US and EU. We assume Sony's explanation would be similar.
