    Great review. I've got this camera, and am shocked at how phenomenal it is, as discovered every day! It's worth purchasing the battery grip that gives you twice the battery and the grip helps with video stabilization. The other feature no one ever mentions IS the sony wireless mic system that plugs INTO the active shoe and not only provides battery power, but also auto detects the mic directly without wires! Model URX-PO3, and another system by Sony that allows for two wireless mics simultaneously!

    The noise on the A7Rii on full frame vs super 35 in 4K is more related to a codec issue on the firmware is not the ISO sensitivity of the sensor because sensor noise floor comparing the A7S and the A7Rii is the same. Latest firmware upgrade V4.01 brings a lot of improvements on full frame 4K video I notice that switching from full frame to super 35 gives similar noise levels at very high ISO. .

    I noticed you have a canon 16-35 adapted with metabones. I'm having problems with this lens locking my camera up. Doesn't happen with my other canon lenses. Any ideas or suggestions to resolve this issue? Thanks great video

    Is there a big advantage with using the Shogun vs internal 4K? Does the IBIS work with Canon glass using metabones adapter? Can IBIS and the lens IS work together?

    Does the camera produce video autofocus with the canon 17-40mm with metabones adaptor? I have seen heard you cannot get autofocus when using the adaptors?

    I think i dont have a problem about low light issue since i know what im shooting, the least cause i could know is, i would bring portable led with me because im used to a6000 and switching to a7rii.

    Great review and very informative,, thanks for posting,, really is a high quality still image camera with video on the side,, its a shame they advertised it so much that it was a 4k shooter,, awesome that its so compact but I think sony should up the size a little and get rid of the over heating problem and give it a bigger battery so it can do everything really well all In the one body,,, I'm still a big fan of sony and loving my a6000 a lot wonting to move to full fram sometime :)

    Im in a situation Where i dont know If i should film in 4k or 1080 60p just to be able to make more slowmo... 4k is Nice but i still think the 1080p in slog2 super 35 looks almost the same

    I wanted to upgrade my Sony A7ii for a A7iii or a A7Sii, unfortunately I had some bad experiences with both when they overheat after 30 mins of recording !!! It's a pitty because I really like Sony cameras... I guess that for what i do (events, conferences, concerts) the GH5 would be a better option, it can shoot 4k for more than 1h30 without this problem

    You really need to use shallow depth of field with these low bitrate codecs. At only 100mbps you see terrible compression when the details of the image increase, for example at 8:47.
    I don't see a technical reason not to go higher, it should be the same processing power needed and transfer speeds are fast enough for 150 or 200mbps.
    Thanks for the video!

    Sounds like a great camera. Love the 5-axis stabilization built into the body. Low light sounds like it's good enough for what I shoot. Short battery life sucks though. I get 3.5 hours shooting 4K on my GH4. a7r II costs twice what the GH4 cost me so I'll be sticking with what I've got.
    Thanks for a great review that covered exactly what I cared about: video not stills.

    Jason,
    I have one really important question, I am going to Bangkok Photo Fair to buy a A7R2. Will the FE ZA 28-135 work as my still zoom? I am happy to buy any other prime FE that I might need for street stills etc. I dont care about weight or $$ as I was looking at the G70-20F4 & thinking I have to hump that thing around when most of what I do will be below 135.
    What do you think? & Cheers from Thailand, Ed

    • @videomaker
      @videomaker  8 років тому

      +Ed Smith you can use the lens for photo, but the weight might be an issue, its not a lightweight. However with a throw as long as 28-135, it would expect to be bigger & heavier. There might be other options if your looking for something smaller.

    This looks like a nice camera but $3K wow, what would guys advise for my needs? I need to shoot videos as high quality as I can afford I suppose so I dont really need a camera to take photos, I need more of a camcorder, Id like to make great high quality video for my UA-cam video uploads, HD etc, this camera seems great but I need to make videos so this may not be for me. Thanks guys for any ideas you can give me.

      +Videomaker i am using this camera with metabones with canon lenses...BUT i can't use AF during video...i still have to use it manual...my question is....i can solve this issue using sony lenses ? which ones....? thank you so much

    • @videomaker
      @videomaker  8 років тому +1

      +Nomad By Fate we experienced when using a lens adapter with an EF Canon Lens that the auto-focus went from their 399 phase detect fast Hybrid AF to just contrast auto focus. it hunted a lot and was slow. We were unable to verify if it was the camera, lens, adapter or design flaw, as the Hybrid AF is suppose to work with canon lenses with an adapter. However with E mount Sony lenses, it was super fast and very cool. Hope this helps! -The Videomaker team

    I don't think the A7S has ANY advantage if you're prepared to stick with S35 mode on accasion for low light. If I had the option of purchasing two cameras, both units would be the A7Rii.

    Please do more camcorder vs. DSLR reviews. I've been shooting for a while with a DSLR and it is a GIANT logistical pain in the neck, not to mention no XLRs, no focus peaking, etc...but I have no idea how to move up to a camcorder that would provide equal or better image quality.
    Help us frustrated DSLR shooters out.

    • @MrTommybadger
      @MrTommybadger 8 років тому

      +Videomaker Great ideas. But I'm tired of being a clinking, clanking collection of caliginous junk. I don't want to carry around a hardware store's worth of cages, clamps, brackets, lenses, cables, preamps, and the rest of the DSLR kit anymore-it messes with my creative flow, and sucks away cash that would otherwise go to feeding my family.
      I do shoot with a 24-70 2.8 and other Nikon primes on my D810 and I love the poetic, gorgeous images it can produce, especially in hideous mixed lighting and at very low light levels. Unfortunately, t's a huge pain to use for street shooting and run-and-gun because the autofocus can't keep up and I don't have a spare hand to focus with because I'm also booming.
      So keep people like me in mind when you test-I need a camcorder that gets as close to Alexa-quality images as possible, has reasonable autofocus, lush colors, and XLRs in a form factor that doesn't make me feel like a pack mule trying to juggle flaming torches with my hooves.
      Thanks for reading my comment and responding back.
      TB

      +John Lee It does 8bit 4:2:2 out

    • @Supercon57
      @Supercon57 8 років тому +5

      +UpHill Cinema Exactly, 1:25 he states "but you can get 10 bit 4:2:2 when using an external recorder such as the Atomos Shogun"
      This is extremely misleading, there is a huge difference between 256 (8 bit) and 1024 (10 bit), if this camera did output 10 bit this thing would sell faster than GTA V did on release
      When using an external recorder the 8 bit output is recorded INTO a 10 bit space which doesn't mean anything..
      8 bit=/=10 bit

      THanks, I was confused by this as well. 10 bit would have been awesome but it's only 8 bit.
      Still uncompressed 4:2:2 in 8 bit is nice.

      There is a gear at the bottom right side of the screen, if you click on it it will bring up a menu that gives the option for video speed. Slow the speed down if the pace of any video is too fast. Better yet, if its too slow you can speed it up. Thanks for watching!

    Shame on SONY!!! A Flagship Mirrorless for who? What Pro would buy an unrealiable so-called Professional camera for over $3,000?? Professional means, something a Professional would consider because it works!! This doesn't even come close!! I need a camera that's reliable all day long, not something I need to stick another battery in every 30 mins if it doesn't overheat first! I mentioned this to a bunch of so called professional, and one guy said, "then just go out and buy two"! Other's said I'm bashing Sony, well I'm not!!! I'm telling it like it is!
    Sony's A7R ll 4K internal recording video camera sucks! I am a professional that shoots for a living. I don't know about you or if you're getting paid by Sony for this review. A PRO camera whereas brand NEW battery doesn't last for 25 mins... and your surprised it didn't overheart first? What does that tell me?
    WTF... I can't imagine what a camera like this could cost me in lawsuits for missing a once in a lifetime moment because it let me down in that moment! I could never trust a camera like this. I guess if your just an stills shooter of products, wildlife or landscapes and and not using it like a working camera, then it's a great stills cameras, but then... there's lots of other cameras out there to look at with a far better selection of affordable lenses and gear. Buyer beware of the hype!!!
    Also, I didn't hear you mention it doesn't have a touch screen display either.

      You're absolutely right. This camera isn't for pros but for wannabe pro couch potatoes who shoot home movies. This is for the Sony fanboys who are in denial. Some people want to hear the truth and most don't. When you tell them the truth they respond by attacking your credibility and character as if they think they're better than you and know more than you. Meanwhile, Let these people fall into the trap of the equipment is more important than the knowledge of the person behind the camera.
