probably the best review i have seen on this camera. thanks 👍
+markstanley2001 Awesome! Thank you!
If you were dissatisfied with the low light. That means will be dissatisfied with every other camera in the world when it comes to low light abilities.
+Major Moves Films No worries, that's not what he said.
+Mahat Tattva Dasa he did say he was disappointed with the low light
Yea. I liked this review but his disappointment in the low light performance one this camera is BEYOND ridiculous.
+Damian Bartolacci he just needed to overexpose 1 or 2 stops to reduce it alot
Just got the camera. To me, it seems pretty good at most ISO settings, except for the bigger settings where you can even notice noise and image quality degradation on the camera screen. Is that overexposure trick proven to work? Also, should I be shooting any differently if I am using SLog3? Thanks!
Great video. Been a Canon user for years and now thinking of buying the a7s mk ii. Very useful info!
Great video. Super helpful setting up the new A7sii
Thanks for taking the time to make this, it helped me and I am sure many others.
good review thanks for the light.
You can set the Finder/Monitor switch to a custom button to quickly override the detection sensor on the EVF. for other quick settings you can also customize the function menu.
Steadsyhot is not meant to be used when you're on a platform as it treats all motion as something to be corrected.
Only slog2 and slog3 provide 14 stops of dynamic range. The other gamma curves do not provide that.
low light noise is heavily affected by choosing the correct profile and proper exposure. If either is incorrect you will get significant noise.
Great review, no nonsense, straight to the point. Thank you
Thanks for the info, I'm probably switching soon!
Kidron, I just got the A7sii too. I'm coming from Nikon and been going through the same things. Thanks for the tips.
+Michael Zaritheny (mzaritheny) Great! Glad you liked it!
Thanks man - you really helped me get started. Ill be watcing you :D
Thanks for taking the time to share your personal experience. Well done, be blessed in all your adventures - Frederick
+marbelle.media Glad you liked it! Thanks!
I love how detailed you are
+Jeff Eisley Thanks! I try to be.
Thanks for making this review! Helpful info!
Thanks for the video Kidron, helped me a lot!
Great video man! It was a very thought out review. I really appreciate you posting this!
Thanks man! Absolutely!
This was very helpful. I have to use this for a shoot on the weekend and I'm a newbie. I've been shooting with the 6D for a while.
Glad it helped!
Excellent and thorough assessment and review, very helpful video! I look forward to seeing more of your work shot with this camera, and any further thoughts you might publish about working with it.
+Bonobo3D Thank you! I've put out a couple videos I produced on it already - on KidCannonTV and Hope Cannon Media!
Been wanting to remove those tingling things on my a6300 for a while now but I didn't exactly know how to. Thank you for this detailed review!
Haha glad to be able to help! More reviews coming asap!
you can also customize your fn menu, btw. Thats where i adjust my focus, wb, and profile settings.
You can change the display options in the menu and even program one of the buttons to switch between VF AND LCD. I have the Metabones and a stabilized Tamron F2.8 24-70. Strangely turning on steadyshot on the lens turns it off in camera and vice versa, did the same on my FS5 but worked fine on FS7.
The function button is your friend, it's become my one stop shop to get to a majority of functions. You can map a good deal of functions to it and really save the custom buttons for really specific things.
+Josiah Farnsworth Awesome! I'll investigate!
I would recommend learning to shoot in SLog3. It's no small deal, and the image quality will blow your mind. But for that to really work well, you will need some kind of quality monitor that will allow you to load LUTs on it -- Shogun, Odyssey 7, etc... Then, there are several people who have made really good LUTs that match both the FS7 and the A7sII (in SLog3) with the Alexa/Amira. They are amazing and really do get you close. Finally, I think a lot of your noise will go away by learning to shoot to the right. Overexpose when you can by about a stop -- without blowing out your highlights, and you will see the low light performance shine. There are even LUTs to match the Arri that add compensation for over/underexposure. Good luck!!!
How do you personally shoot in slog3 with such a high base iso? I like my shutter speed twice that of my frame rate, and don't like this image quality loss of nd filters unless I'm outside. I also like a shallow depth of field. I've been curious about this as I am considering buying this camera. I ask because you seem to know your stuff :)
Useful review, thank you! The cropping for high speed mode is unfortunate but camera sensors do have a maximum speed - CMOS speed is determined by how fast you can read off lines of the image, fewer lines = faster readout.
Awesome video I had to watch it again. Wondering have you learned a lot more since you've had the camera?
Great Job. I've watched all of these A7s2 reviews. Your's was really easy to follow and had details I really needed help with. I learned about turning off steadyshot on my DS1. I learned bringing down detail in PP. Again, Great job. Thanks for posting what you have learned.
+crazyredeyes Glad you found it helpful! Yeah, I was just learning it myself, so I thought I'd share what I found. I appreciate it!
Nice review ! Thank you! I've watched like 5 reviews before that , but this was the best!
Great review man. Funny how all these fan boys are complaining about the fact that you were complaining about the noise. Who cares, it's his opinion. This camera is suppose to be the best (or one of the) low light cameras in the world, and its been hyped and over hyped and obviously to him, it didn't live up to it's reputation.
You can set the view finder to not be automatic and put a custom button to switch between the view finder and the lcd.
Manual exposure control in Movie Mode - just what I was looking for.
+onenarrowdoor Great! Glad I could help!
Great video, really informative, rather than other pro videos just talking about specs.
Very nice review. Good info. I have a 5D mkII when it first came out to market, pondering the same switch as you did. Looking primarily at the a6300 for compact size and low weight, but the more I look, the more I look at the a7SII.
Thank you! Yeah the 5Dii is a great camera. I've heard great things about the a6300! The a7sii was fantastic as well.
Actually kept my attention! Thanks man.
Great to hear! Thank you!
Nice review and good setup tips, pleasure to watch
+Chris Longley Glad it worked for you!
Thanks for the information
my favorite thing I like about my sony mirrorles is the battery life I get, the snappy, fast and accurate autofocus and the laggy evf.. its a fantastic camera. much better than my old canon. :-D
Great video, thanks for putting it together....very helpful to future Sony owner :)
Glad it could help!!
Thanks for your excellent review and kindness to share what you have figured out, thus saving so many people time. :) Excellent review!
Absolutely! Thanks! :)
Your right
thnx, i am also about to switch from canon to sony. :)
Thanks a lot.... In the 7RII to change the settings of the viewfinder-monitor auto, go to setting # 4 FINDER/MONITOR (manual)
You will save battery and it will stop to annoying you :)
Great review thanks..
V helpful, thanks! Now I need to figure out if I go with this or the 5d iv...
No problem! If it were me, I'd probably go with the 5Div now. Or the 1Dxii.
What's the deciding factor for you? 120fps at 720 on the 5Div seems a bit underwhelming, no?
I guess it just depends if the extra $2-3K is worth it to have 120fps at 1080 instead of 720. I'd personally like the smaller files on the mark IV. But I can't complain about the 1Dxii, it's just super impressive.
Really enjoy this review! Super helpful :)
Thanks! Glad it could help!
good job on this video my man
thx, very helpful
Solid review!
Awesome video! The a7SII is really in a league of its own.
+Videomaker Thank you! Yes, it is!
Would it be possible to be able to a review between the Sony A7S and the A7S 2? It would be great and thanks for another great video :)
steady shots work ok for me on my glidecam
Awesome video bro
I configured "C3" to toggle between the LCD and the EVF. Then you can disable the annoying auto-switching.
+Rob Kramer Oh awesome! I looked for that option for a long time - must have missed it. What's it called in the menu? Thanks!
+Kidron Cannon Media the command in the custom key settings menu is "finder/monitor sel"
+Rob Kramer right. I looked through all of the custom keys when I was programming 4 of them. Just never saw that option.
+Rob Kramer then set finder/monitor ( gear menu, page 3) to "monitor manual".
+Rob Kramer Awesome! Thanks!
Hey, here are some secret tips for you which might help! :
1. Use slog 2/3 for low light, results in much, much less noise.
2. ETTR: Expose to the right (slightly overexpose by 1 or 2 stops) ALWAYS, be it low light or bright sunlight. Somehow, you can get noise otherwise even in sunlight at 400 ISO in dark areas if you try to bring them up in post. A7sII does retain a huge, huge amount of details in the highlights, which can be recovered without any loss in quality or noise, but the same can not be really said about shadows, never get dark areas in the shot whose details you want to get back up.
3. Use Neat Video's noise reduction always when you can, even if the noise is low. It makes the video crystal clear even at a 100000 iso, esp. if you have exposed to the right.
+Harsh Doshi Thanks!
1. Right. The S-Logs do have the least noise - just aren't always the best (or quickest option)
2. Great info! Didn't know about all the data retained in the highlights.
3. I have DeNoiser 2 by Red Giant - watched Film Riot's comparison of the two (ua-cam.com/video/u9-2eEwC6JE/v-deo.html) I already had DeNoiser, so I'll probably stick with it - just have to spend some more time learning the intricacies.
Thanks again!
Kidron Cannon Thanks for replying, and fair enough! S-log isn't that hard to work with, if you use pp cc, use the slog 3/2 lut and then a cinestyle preset(optional) to get things to look normal and great, then modify everything to look how you would otherwise. It's pretty easy really, I find it easier in resolve, but even in pp cc it is quite simple really.
About the denoiser II, that is a personal choice, that being said I always used neat video but will try out denoiser trial to check it out (:
Cheers!
Are you serious? Slog profiles result in much less noise? Absolutely not. When it comes to low light shooting, you should use standard profiles like Standard, neutral, or if you want that extra dynamic range, use Cine 3 or 4, but be prepared for some more noise. Slog profiles are intended to be used in broad daylight only, to get those superb 14.1 stops of dynamic range, and then allow us to grade our footage in post. Slog profiles boost shadows and reduce highlights drastically in order to get a flat image. When shooting in low light, noise levels will become terrible as low light scenes are made of 90% of shadows and pitch black areas. If these shadows are boosted, massive amounts of noise will appear everywhere in the image. Message to the author of this video: I can shoot up to ISO 25,600 with zero noise, using standard or neutral styles, no PP enabled.
supersky Hey, I realize your experience has been different, however I've seen very good results by using slog in low light, but have always needed to overexpose (by 2 stops) for that, by using iso if nothing else. I do not have any test footage, but I suggest you see Phillip Blooms A7s test/review footages in total darkness to understand what I'm saying. Also, even if some noise peeps in above 50000 ISO, it's less than the noise above 6400 ISO with a 5D M3, and nothing a little Noise Reduction can't clear out completely. (:
+supersky Thanks for the info!
6:31 - There is a setting (I believe under the tool chest icon) to turn off the feature which automatically turns off the screen when you get close to it. That was something I immediately had to do when shooting on the a7s.
Also, I like found that not shooting in manual mode was better for me when I was on a shoot. I'd program the custom mode 1 and 2 to be a 24fps and 60fps settings with 180 degree shutter and such. That way if I quickly wanted to grab a slo-mo shot, I could just turn the dial real fast and grab it. I also then saved the "Movie" mode for my super slo-mo, the APS-C mode so that I could grab the 120 fps shots. I don't know if you figured that out yet, but it might be useful. :) Hope that makes sense.
Great Switch
Thanks a lot for this video man! Very helpful! :D
+Jordantkwhite Absolutely!
Tokina 11-16 is a crop lens, so I don't know how you shot 4k with that lens on for that gliding shot, hence the reason you notice noise very quickl, since sensor takes less light in apsc mode.
at 6:02, for your camera's auto-off function on the display, to shut that feature off and set it to only use the monitor or the viewfinder, go into your settings... MENU (button) > Gear Icon > page 3 > then select "FINDER/MONITOR"; a dialog box will pop up with your choices of "Auto", "Viewfinder", and "Monitor", make your selection and that's it! :) Sony's menus are definitely quite different from Canon or Nikon, but I think once you get used to them, they'll be quite nice.
awesome review brotha.. thank you.. i'm making the canon conversion right now.. What do you think of the new Sony 24-70mm 2.8
Kidron, I think you could use a metabones speed-booster adaptor in conjunction with the 120 fps crop to get the wide focal lengths you want...
+Daniel Teeny Thanks! I need to check it out. Now I'm pretty used to the crop factor!
Great job on the review! I'm about to buy this cam and this was the best review I've seen. All the "usability" info I needed. How many batteries did you purchase? I'm also getting the grip. Thanks!
+Lane McCall Thanks! Great to hear! I bought 2 extras. It came with two in the box. Good luck!
Most detailed video I've seen of the a7Sii to date. Thanks for all the tips!
I have a 5D Mark iii and 70D.
I'm selling the 70D for a sony a7r ii or s ii.
I want something that can do great video, but also do great low light photography.
The 5D will still be my photog work horse, but aside from video I wanted a smaller camera that I can take around for night events I attend.
+AzarathKhan That's a great call! The a7sii will suit you well! However, if you're going to lean more heavily on photography than video, you may want the a7r ii.
Thanks a ton! I have a GH4 right now, but what bugs me is the low light performance and sensor size so im thinking about getting the a7s ii haha
+Sam Seolas You're welcome! Yeah the a7s is great. Sensor is a big plus!
I really enjoyed this video!
Awesome! Glad you liked it!
To kill the monitor turning off when your finger goes in front of the eyepiece go to [GEAR icon > 3rd menu > FINDER/MONITOR and choose MONITOR manual (This will disable the screen turning off every time you reach in front of it)
That was yery usefull. I just bought the a7s can you recommend a good video lens ecxept the 11-16 mm Tokina ?
Great video, keep up the good work!
Thanks!! I'll definitely try. Getting married in a couple weeks, but after that I'll be back with more reviews!! 👌
Congrats on getting married!
+Christian Soto thanks man!
you can customize the Fn menu items
Thanks for sharing !
Thanks for watching!
Great review mate, one of the best on the A7S ii (Also I just bought one and agree with pretty much everything you found, including buying the Tonika 11-16mm)
+masfilmproduction Awesome! That's great to hear! Glad you found the same things I did. Good luck with it!
nice work dude!
Thanks!
Thanks for this great review. After watching this I decided to go ahead and get the a7sii instead of the 5D Mark iii. What kind of steady cam tripod (unipod) do you have? I watched the video where you were on vacation and were taking that thing with you everywhere. It seems a lot more practical than an actual tripod.
Awesome! I'm glad you liked it! Yeah, I'd definitely recommend it over the 5D. I use a Glidecam. For the price, it's impossible to beat! Can't recommend it highly enough.
I have a Nikon mount Tokina 11-16mm...I don't think i'll be able to do anything about aperture and stuff with that since theres not electronic adapter for Nikon mounts to Sony.
Bro!U are thee sh*t!! I had no idea what the cine and slog was.I now have a basic idea of how important it is.I just order the A7SII, im gonna master it before I take it on a shoot...Thanks
+Trilisill Glad it helped! Yeah, go take on the world with this camera! Good luck!
Strange that you would say you are disappointed with the low light. The A7Sii is the king of low light, hands down. What (consumer) camera do you know of that has better high ISO performance?
Check out Matt Whois Matt Johnson's a7s ii settings. Great detailed tutorial/review!
i had my A7SII in about a week now. I always shoot in Manual mode, that way i can take stills as well. I found you can't set the audio level while your not recording, but once you hit record, you can change it. I found that kinda weird
+Speednut1 Oh good info! Thanks!
Great video! Honest and easy to listen to. :)
Thanks!
I feel like people need to ask themselves:
-How often they really use High frame rate, and shoot in very dark, demanding situations.
-How much they really want to shoot
S-log2/3 because the extra time in post can be considerable.
- Is delivering/acquiring in 4K a necessity for their clients.
I personally shoot 95-99% of everthing in 1080/24 because the editing is seamless and I do not do big budget video jobs. If I did pick up a demanding higher budget shoot I would consider renting a Red ect... and maybe even contracting an operator. I am getting the feeling that there is so much excellent marketing to get people to buy such ergonomic nightmares of machines so they can have countless features that help them justify their purchase, which strangely they wont even see often use. In my very honest opinion Canon has much more attractive color science from skin tones to landscapes as well as the way they handle mixed lighting.
+Michael Andrew Great thoughts! I tend to agree - most people don't NEED all the features. But even when they don't need them, people like to know they have options - either as bragging rights, or for occasional use.
However, I find myself using the high frame rates ALL the time, professionally. I also use the high ISOs - sometimes. And the 4K is very useful in interviews when you need to make a jumpcut.
I use 1080p 60fps about 60-70% of the time. 1080p 120fps about 20%, and 4K 24fps the rest of the time. Everything renders out to 1080p 24 to allow for pure slow-motion.
So, I'd say if the features are NEEDED for professional work, this camera is a GREAT, budget option. But, if someone doesn't need 1080 at high frame rates, or 4K, or very low-light capabilities, there are 50 other cameras 1/3 the price of this that will do the trick. (Still love the 6D as a Canon full-frame budget option.)
BTW, I TOTALLY agree with the Canon colors comment - I always find myself editing Sony footage to TRY and match Canon colors. I think Canon has NAILED it with colors...IMO.
Thanks for the comments!
I subscribed and thumbed up because I feel you have just given the most honest and objective review I've ever seen on youTube.
For all the haters I shoot Canon but if I could afford it I'd shoot with what ever brand got the job done the best.
+lick jam Thank you!
Aside from the camera's steadyshot or glidecam mode, was there any physical apparatus you used to steady the camera?
Good video I'm debating the switch but I'm still not sure..
It is a good switch. However it is complicated. If you don't NEED 4K and higher frame rates, you don't need it. But if those are necessities, it's a great upgrade.

Justin, have you looked at the Blackmagic? I'm looking at the Blackmagic ursa mini 4k or 4.6k & the A7Sii what do you think?
Thanks for the review. I found it informative. Question: Would you know how well does the in-camera stabilization work with lenses that have no electronic communication with the camera?
+Mahat Tattva Dasa You're welcome. Glad you liked it! Well, I don't have any lenses/adapters that don't have electronic communication with the body, BUT, the internal stabilization comes from stabilizing the actual camera sensor - it isn't determined by the lens. So I would assume it works just the same as it would with a lens that can communicate with the camera.
It makes sense. Thanks.
whats funny is the video quality used to shoot you filming the a7s2 is very high quality
Can the Sony A7S11 produce quality still images from 4K video? or 1080p slow motion?
Great review. What kinds of cards do you need to have to be able to write 4K internal? And how much do they cost?
+Brendan Donnelly Thanks! Glad you liked it! I talk about that in the Uboxing at about 3:00. Nothing super fancy. I just use a SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC UH-3. Check it out right here: ua-cam.com/video/hhebAWTt_Mw/v-deo.html
Great video and info I am new user for sony a7s11, I have a question which metabones adapter? there are so many on amazon which one is the one you got. Thks
Someone probably already mentioned it, but you should get the metabones speedbooster to shoot in that APS-C mode. You'll practically regain that full frame view.
+Hessel Folkertsma Woah! For real? That's interesting! Thanks!
+Kidron Cannon Did you find the adapter? If you didn't, I'd gladly help locate it for you.
+Hessel Folkertsma Yeah! I know where to get one, but I haven't yet. Thanks though!
What's the tripod brand you hold in 12''46? It looks great!!!
Ur White Keyboard on desk is Great ! can u give a link to buy

Kidron, is there a screen off button, so you can record video and turn the back screen off at the same time?
Also, in low light/night time, can you bump up the ISO and have a narrower lens aperture to get a deeper depth of field? I currently use Canon and have to use a f1.8 aperture and ISO 1600 to get a bright enough video image. The ISO won't go above 1600 without crapping out. It's a very shallow depth of field.
+Wayne Carter There is a way to switch to the Finder instead of the LCD Monitor - which might save some battery. It is in the Custom Setting's menu. @Rob Kramer pointed it out to me.
Yes, you can used very high ISOs on this camera for shooting in low light, to compensate for when you need to stop down on your lens.
Is there any crop factor with the metabones adaptor?
Great video! Subscribed for more awesome info!
Thanks for the review. i just ordered the a7sii last night :) Im a wedding videographer so i am really looking forward to shooting in low light.
what was the aperture of the lens you were using for your test scene under the arch?
No problem! Glad you liked it. I have a 1Dxii now that I really love! It was 2.8
im having an issue where mine sometimes doesnt turn back on after switching it off. , for battery changes or whatever... have to flick the button on and off, then remove and reinsert the battery. wont record sometimes when pressing the record button, etc.
Hi i was wondering if the stabilisation inside the a7s2 works on Rokinon lenses ? or do you need a adaptor ?
100K ISO and you are complaining about noise?!?!?!?!
Thanks for the video Kidron! Was very insightful and I'm looking to slowly make the transition from Canon 5Dmk3 to Sony A7s2. Just one question. Which metabones adapter did you use? As I heard the normal metabones crops the sensor and the lens, but for full frame you need a Metabones speedbooster adapter. Is this correct?
My a7sm2 seems to produce less noise at 40,000 and 80,000 ISO when shooting low light.
a7sII's low light is not good enough? which camera is better then?
My both AF and MF dont work with Metabones adapter, using STM Lens. Any idea? Is it STM Lens causing trouble? since focus on this lens only works electronically, i mean when connected. Which means my STM is not receiving power from adapter. Is my adapter faulty?
