    Of course they announced the A7SII, literally the day after my A7RII showed up. I think I made the right call as I like the idea of having a more "all around" camera where I can get great stills if need be as well as good 4k video. I picked up an Assassin just for the touchscreen and other features because having worked with the A7S/Shogun combo, I knew that was the right call.

    I agree with you on the need for F2.8 zoom lenses. For a hobbyist like me in my late 40's that would be a definite buy. the 55mm and 35mm I absolutely love but I just can't justify an f4 28-70 and f4 70-200. I really think they are missing out on sales of cameras without the 2.8 zooms. The lack of them almost has me wanting to sell off my Sony and go with Nikon or Canon instead. I want native lenses! The only thing I adapt are my takumars for the fun of using them. May I also add, I truly enjoy the format you and Chelsea provide. It's "inviting" for back of a better term and not pro a specific manufacturer, your honest opinions are appreciated. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks for the intro to the camera and the review. The original A7S is now discounted to being just a couple of hundred pounds more than a GH4 in some UK retailers. Since I cannot easily distribute or edit 4K at the moment - would you recommend a cheaper, original A7S shooting HD for now and, perhaps, adding an external recorder when 4K really takes a hold in a year or two and I can make more use of it?

    about the micro HDMI, Sony did give us a little accessory to hold cables in place without the need of a cage with the A7RII, so there's a good chance they will give us the same accessory with the A7SII at least.

    great review as always Tony - yes it is amazing how few lenses Sony is putting out - and no F2.8 zooms which is amazing - and seems like Sony has just totally forgot their APS-C E mount - which has had no new lenses for ages and no F2.8 zooms either and will never I suspect -

    Thanks for the video Tony! I always enjoy your work... I've been waiting for the 7S II for a while now. I am still shooting with a GH3 on a rig and I must say the form factor is not ideal. At this point I am very much considering a dedicated camcorder such as the new Panasonic AG-DVX200, or the JVC GY-LS300. The JVC has the ability to use most lenses on the market with its 4/3 mount and Variable Scan Mapping technology. The Panasonic uses a 4/3 sensor and fixed lens but is an all in one grab and go set up. Considering the price for the camcorders VS price for the Sony and the additional gear needed to operate an SLR style camera (rig, xlr adapter etc etc) I am not sure for a one man band such myself it's worth it. Of coarse this all depends on what a person is looking for. I am just thinking out loud here. Maybe people don't realize the amount of additional gear and extra time involved in using a SLR to shoot good quality video.
    Cheers,
    Greg

    Tony, I wish I didn't come across your wonderfully put together A7s II review, because now I want to buy it! The stabilization, touch screen, 120 fps and S-Log3 all made me rethink getting the original a7s. My main purpose is to video shoot the stars/meteors/satellites at night. Along with this new A7S II, I want to get the F 1.4 35mm lens and use the android app for remote control. Do you know who would offer this combo for me, and what accessories do I need to buy in order to make my purchase a total package astronomical dream come true?

    The FS5 they released looked more interesting to me than the A7Sii for video. Being a photographer though, I couldn't lay that much down on video. I'd go for the A7Rii. But as much as I like that camera, I still need the ergonomics of the Canon, the lenses, being extremely fast with it. I had the original A7R and did landscape shots with it, they are doing well. I still would like to see a pro body. Even though it would be bigger, I don't think mirrorless has to be about being smaller. Adapting lenses isn't a big deal for landscapes and things like that but every day shooting I don't want to adapt the big Canon zoom to it. For video I would. I don't care about auto focus in video.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 років тому +1

      +nagol5178 Yeah, we have a DSLR crowd on this channel, but most filmmakers will be happier with a proper video camera like the FS5.
      I will say that the a7S (and II) have one HUGE advantage--that full-frame sensor gives you background blur and low-light capabilities that you would need to spend $30k to match in a proper video camera. That's why so many people, like us, have hacked together a video rig from what is basically a body designed for stills.

    • @nagol5178
      @nagol5178 9 років тому

      Yeah, I've always shot video with full frame. I do have a smaller sensor I shoot 4k on right now. But I figure the super 35mm cameras will be a step in the right direction. Especially if you have 2.8 lenses. The problem is, if you put one of Sony's F/4 lenses on there, it's not gonna look like F/4 on the full frame. But that's still a shallow depth of field. Sometimes I forget how big an APS-C sensor is. Then I shoot something with my 4k video camera and remember, even F/4 on the super 35 is probably a good bit. I still would rather have a full frame sensor because I like that look.

    • @sbrazenor2
      @sbrazenor2 9 років тому +1

      +Tony Northrup I find that the only reason I use the 4K recording on my S5 is when I'm on the road and I'm driving by an accident scene, I record in 4K on the way by and can grab clean frames for social media posting. Even though I own a 4K TV, I find that 1080p is still fine (it upscales really well) and the 60FPS is probably the better want to go at this point.
      Although if you really want to demand something nutty, ask the manufacturers to make 8K @ 120FPS; native ISO 3200 q/ SLog3. That's not asking too much. It would only cost a few million dollars after R&D costs are factored in... And weigh 30lbs. LOL :)

    • @daviangel
      @daviangel 9 років тому

      +SeanFromPVD You do know UA-cam already has 8K video though not @120fps. And IMO 4k on a phone just sounds like bragging rights because it's not like you can record very long on those either before you run out of space with all the extra diskspace 4k eats up! 4k@30 just is fine since most people won't notice difference between 30 and 60 just like no one is missing 120fps.

    • @sbrazenor2
      @sbrazenor2 9 років тому +1

      daviangel I do know that they have '8k' showing, but with the manner of compression that is used to make it viable from a bandwidth perspective, it won't be as clear as raw 8K. Most likely it would have significant reductions in color space and the actual pixel count may be based on an algorithmic estimation, rather than actual point data. (i.e. This many pixels will be 'red' from this point to that point, or dithered to this degree over this space.)
      This is why downscaled 4K to 1080p can still look better than 1080p; and upscaled 1080p to 4K looks worse than native 4K.
      The difference of 30-60 FPS is noticeable, but mainly for the purpose of frame grabbing and cropping videos. About about 65-70Hz+ it starts to seem the same. While you can get 144Hz refresh monitors, using something like free-sync can smooth 72 FPS sufficiently to make it seem as good as 144Hz to the average person. (Because there's no tearing or jitter perceived.)

    • @daviangel
      @daviangel 9 років тому

      Everything you just said also applies to 4K so like I said it's not really viable nor ready for the masses. Maybe if they actually used High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) for the 4K video on the phones, which I doubt, because I haven't heard anything about it. I"m guessing they'll come up with custom proprietary stuff like Sony. I assume this camera uses XAVC to record 4K. pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcam/resource.latest.bbsccms-assets-micro-xdcam-latest-XAVC.shtml Apple should instead have native HEVC support in their next OS 10.11 and iOS 9 if they don't already IMO. Windows 10 has native HEVC and even the new Intel CPU's. GPU accelerated decode of HEVC video file format including both 8-bit and 10-bit support. This will provide improved video playback capabilities on the platforms listed in the following table. communities.intel.com/thread/59216

    How would you compare A7sii and A7s to blackmagic pocket cinema camera obviously for video only as bpcc is video only.The blackmagic can also be paired with the ninja assassin and I think they give you some color grading software with it.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 років тому

      +Brendan Daly The BMPCC has true raw video, so it can theoretically be cleaner when it's graded... The BMPCC also has better usability. But the a7 series is full-frame, which gathers more than 4x more light, so it'll be cleaner in low light. Plus, you get to take full advantage of all the full-frame lenses and their background blur.

    adding an external monitor is crucial for critical focus, a proper suite of shot exposure tools (histogram, vectorscope, waveform, and rgb parade). For people who are doing serious video, at whom this camera is targeted, they realize that the body alone is frequently not enough to frame, expose, a capture the highest level of video. also external monitors allow you to use LUT when filming in slog. For that you need a monitor.
    Even if you purchase the a7s II, you will still need an external monitor, unless you're exclusively a run and gun shooter.
    I think the real strengths of the a7s II are: short internal 4k clips (we've yet to see if it's affected by heat issues the way the a7r ii is), expanded slow motion, IBIS, and improved focus. If these things are important to you, the a7s II will be a good buy, but you will STILL need an external monitor. If they are not, the a7s is still a superlative tool fully capable of incredible results.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 років тому

      +trevorpinnocky Yeah, I agree about the external monitor. We do a lot of run-and-gun (and a lot of not-run-and-gun) and so I don't always use a monitor, but I often get back to review the shots and realized I missed focus, or focus drifted...

      The 18-50 f/2.8 is replaced by the better Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS. The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non-VC is sharper, but it's autofocus motor is slow and noisy and it doesn't have stabilisation . The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC does have stabilisation, but isn't as sharp as the older version or the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS.
      The 17-70 f/2.8-4 performs nice, but isn't f/2.8 through the range, so at 50mm it is a stop slower (and has more DoF) than the constant f/2.8 zooms.

    Why no mention about the reported (and significant) overheating issues with 4K recording in the a7r2 and, since the a7s2 shares almost ever significant design detail (body, ibis, processor, etc, but not sensor), why you think/don't think the a7s2 will share that problem.
    Especially since Sony said they didn't do 4K internal in the a7s1 because of overheating problems. And because it appears as though they might be using the same sensor in the a7s2 as the a7s. Or do you think that the low megapixels of the a7s2 sensor will keep it cooler... even though at 4K the data is the same?
    This overheating basically eliminates the entire Sony 4K capable a7 series from my consideration because I record events and can't use a camera that has to have a cool down period after 15 to 40 minutes of nonstop recording. Any feedback appreciated!

    I'm not certain this is true but from my experience with the color profiles that flatten the image they give a much much better dynamic range (using Alvaroyus on my D610 brings me from about 13 to 14.5 stops), but doesn't it show a lot more noise in any low light. I did a little bit of testing myself even at 400 ISO I was getting much more noise than using the normal flat profile (but there was as previously stated, much more dynamic range). Is S-Log 3 that way? It does an awesome job for what it's for, but wouldn't it cause a lot of noise?

    • @randomgeocacher
      @randomgeocacher 9 років тому

      Log curves are flat around normal exposure (lots of color data there) and then even more flat around the extremes. So if you in post decide to keep a lot of the extremes, they probably will have some issues. How noisy your image will be depends a lot on if you exposed correctly and what choices you do in post, so there is no yes/no answer. Crushing the blacks is a common way to kill noise in shadow areas. For the record I haven't been grading neither Nikon nor Sony footage, so just speaking for my own experience with BMPCC & Canon.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  9 років тому

      +ArrKayCee Yeah, recovered shadows are noisy on the a7S with S-Log. We only use it when we need the extra dynamic range, and then we have to very carefully adjust the exposure to maximize what we squeeze from the histogram--it'll usually underexpose by default.

    4K with 60fps would definitely generate heating problems in such a small device with such a huge sensor. Thats the reason why it was not implemented I am pretty sure. Tech moves on and at some day it will be possible, but not today. It is already a big achievement to do 4K internally with huge sensor in small device and 120fps now with FullHD.

    There are great benefit to the fact that the controls are the same across the entire line. That is one of the things that I hate about Canon that every camera has a different layout and one thing I love about Nikon that no matter which camera I hold in my hands the controls are familiar. I fully use the A7II and A6000 and the wheel is just fine.
    As far as the A7SII, I am disappointed. One of the main reason I switched from Nikon to Sony was the low light performance from the A7s and the huge savings from not having to get the D4s. But I am a photographer and not a videographer so when I saw that the new A7SII only had contrast point AF and not Phase detection . That is a bummer and made the A7SII useless for me. The irony is that what I have already spent on the Sony system I could have bought the D4s. :(
    That said. I am happy with the A7II and the A7RII spite of it weaknesses over DSLRs. Just wish the A7SII would have been a photography camera.

    Having less pixels vs more pixels in the noise battle actually does make a difference, but it works in slightly different ways. More pixels means every pixel is of worse quality, but since there are more pixels, they kind of even out. However, if there are too many pixels, at too high of an ISO, not even the sheer number of pixels will discount for the fact that each pixel is shit. Thus, having fewer pixels can mean having a higher quality when looking at the picture as a whole in the more extreme situations.

    • @TonyAndChelsea

      +Baba Wethu I found no relationship between pixel density and noise: ua-cam.com/video/_KYvp8PrCFc/v-deo.html

    • @najsbajsmedmajs
      @najsbajsmedmajs 9 років тому

      Tony Northrup I have watched that video and I agree. It's just that I realise that in more extreme cases there can't not be a difference. Let's say we have a camera with 4 times as big pixels as another camera. At one point, the ISO will be so high that the pixels only show complete darkness/whiteness/redness or whatever. However, when every single pixel of the higher density sensor shows complete darkness/whiteness-etc. the other sensor with 4 times as much might still be able to retain some information for each pixel. Making the higher resolution pixture 100% blown out whereas there is still some detail in the lower resolution's image.
      Of course this isn't a real life scenario, but it still proves that there obviously can be a difference.

    • @najsbajsmedmajs
      @najsbajsmedmajs 9 років тому

      Erik Jans Let's say the minimum amount of light a pixel can capture is 1 lumen. Let's say that the lens outputs 2 lumen per 4 pixels. This means each pixel picks up 0.5 lumen and all pixels show complete darkness. However, another camera, with 1/4 the amount of pixels; i.e. each pixel is 4x as big, will recieve 2 lumen for each pixel, meaning every pixel will be able to recieve information.

    • @SnaJKirE
      @SnaJKirE 9 років тому

      +Baba Wethu Ok I get your point but i never thought about it like that. I don't think there is a specific threshold under which there is too little light for the pixel to detect anything (within realistic lighting conditions) but rather that the innate noise of the pixel/electronics will affect the signal more if the light is lower. And by combining 4 high noise pixels you get a single pixel with better signal to noise ratio. I'm not an expert though so I might be wrong.
