    Nice presentation, and this is indeed a very, very, under-appreciated synth. It's a monster. One thing worth mentioning is how fun it is to play and program. 15 years ago nobody would even imagine an analog synth with these capabilities for less than 5 times the price of this thing.

    This was so good. This was exactly the right level of production. It feels like I’m sitting in the room with you learning about your synth. Your philosophy of your gear is perfect. I love finding used gear that no-one else is looking for and buying it cheap. I also really appreciate hearing your thoughts on this synth especially knowing you’ve owned and played many of the big name synths. I’m one of those people who plays guitar, dabbles in piano and keys, and some daw/mpc synths. This seems like a great first step into standalone synths. I also wanted to say I like the long format. I’ve been typing this while listening your arpeggios from part 3. I appreciate the work you’re doing and i’m looking forward to more.

    I've owned a DM6 for a couple years now and love it so much and recently picked up DM12 with the intention of selling off the 6. However your patches have me rethinking that. Very nice piece on the DM12--probably one of the MOST underrated, versatile synths on the market today. The presets are crap. Load it with patches from a talented sound designer and you wont stop playing it. Menu diving is a pain (a consequence of the instruments versatility), but worth the learning curve. Its an astounding sounding instrument --that just happens to be very affordable. Its a workhorse in my studio.

    Great video showing off a superb synth. My entry into hardware synths was the Arturia Matrixbrute. A monster of course but probably not the best thing to start with. Then I bought the DM12 and was instantly making the noises I wanted....well, sort of :D
    Despite what some say about menu diving, it is actually very intuitive once you start and this synth actually taught me more about how to Battle the Brute!
    I mean, come on, the rotary organ sound alone is worth the purchase price...isn’t it?
    I think some people are maybe put off a little when trying the presets. They do seem to be drenched in reverb, but turn that down and you can create traditional 70’s keyboard sounds to semi modular shizzle to good old 80’s cheese...what’s not to like.
    Thanks for your video and I’m sure it will sell many DM12’s this year. Mr Behringer should put you on the pay roll ;)
    Great work, thank you.

    I own both the DM12 and the Prophet Rev2-16. Both are terrific synths that complement each other well but I gravitate more to the DM12 because it's very favorable to dreamy/spacey pads and ambient tones. It's very easy to play despite some menu diving but once you find that special sound it's very easy to get lost in its flowing sonic textures.

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  4 роки тому +4

I tend to leave my synths running for long stretches at a time .. and my DM12’s LCD display dimmed so low after a year it was barely readable. Hi Jorb,
    I'm new to the world of music synthesis but not to the world of music - I've been a bass and guitar musician for a long time.
    I'm a subscriber to your channel and I'd like to take you up on your request from the end of the video.
    I'd like to ask you to re-create the sound of Jack Casady's bass on White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. My understanding is this was done on a Fender Jazz bass - he did not have/use his alembic/Guild Starfire yet. Recorded at RCA studios in LA. Possibly, a lot of the tone is effects, but we'll see.
    I think I - we - would all learn a lot from seeing how you approach doing something like this.
    What would you choose? digital, analog, virtual analog? Which unit? How many oscillators and what wave shapes, how many and type of filter, use of mod matrix, effects, etc.
    I enjoy watching you work and your sharing of your knowledge. I currently have: a Hydrasynth desktop, novation summit, Deepmind 12 D, Behringer Pro 800, and a Microfreak - all purchased used - I like gear too. It would be great if you could use one of those so I could try and recreate your work - but ultimately, it's up to you, of course.
    If you find this a worthwhile request and challenge, perhaps you could go a little further and try to re-create Jorma's lead guitar sound as well.
    Thank you so much for your videos. I've learned a lot and I enjoy your spirit, presence, candor, knowledge and willingness to share.
    If you attempt this, I’d be pleased to leave a donation - your time and attention have value. Even if you don't make a video for this - perhaps you could send me tips for how to do it myself.
    Thank you,
    Joe

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  4 роки тому +2

      An interesting question! I think what you get from the V collection is a wide variety of specific vibes. This couldn't get you the exact vibe of a Moog, for example. But it can fill a similar role with bangin mono patches. In that match-up, I would rather have a hardware synth I'm very familiar with programming as opposed cycling through a bunch of iconic, but cookie cutter sounds.
      Serum, since it does wavetables is a totally separate animal. There's a lot of sounds available there that are not possible on the deepmind, but again, the roles can be similar.
      Depends on what you want, if you're comfortable editing with a mouse & keyboard, have at it.

      If you're comfortable with a few hurdles in regards to the deepmind presets, it has a higher potential ceiling for options overall.
      And not to be reductive, but 4 voices in the minilogue vs 6 or 12 on the deepmind, you would notice.
      I still happily recommend the original minilogue as a great first synth, the big difference is no digital osc like the XD, which is pretty fiddly for a new synthesist anyway.

      I have tried it, in fact I scrapped a video about stealing some of the oberheim vibe, didn't make any good points.

      Or 2 effects on the mood milter, one high pass one low pass, and an lfo changing their mix opposite to each other, trying to blend simulate an lfo on a continuous filter type.
      Or the mod matrix to point lfo 2 to high pass amount.
