The Witchfinder General Gives Spiritual Advice

- The Witchfinder General of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay answers correspondence from his many admirers all over Christendom; and, by his judgments and deliberations thereof, offers succor to those suffering from maladies of a religious nature.
"What's up with the weird accent?" It's a rendition of Original Early Modern English Pronunciation, commonly abbreviated as OP, an accent reconstructed by a linguist and Shakespeare scholar that's our best guess as to what people in southern England sounded like in the 17th century.

CORRECTION: Our most puissant and learned Witchfinder General misspoke when speaking of the vile woman-preacher Anne Hutchinson. The manner in which that portion of the sermon is phrased implies that the godly folk of New England believe in the Covenant of Works - they do not. It is a Popish tenet, and salvation is by God's grace alone. The Witchfinder meant to say that Goody Hutchinson accused the clergymen of Massachusetts Bay of abandoning the righteous and true Covenant of Grace, and cleaving to the lie of the Covenant of Works, a most libelous and false accusation.
Aye, such corrections are much appreciated by the goode folk who wish to learn the ways in which the teachings of our Lorde Jesus Christ have been put into practice upon this earth by the blessed people of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay. Learning from one's failings and showing penance in the eyes of almighty God is a sign of virtue, good and true.
To ye I give my appreciation from the wretched English penal colonies known together as Nevve South Wales.
I thank thee for thy clarificassions. I must confess I was stricken by confucion at’what samed such an ‘eretical statement farr a Protestant ta make. ‘Tis indede tha covenant o’ Grace alone that all true Christians subscroibe to. Not tha Papist ‘eresy o’ Works.

I love that Cotton Mather's 17th century inoculation drive made it into this series- it's one of my favourite incidents from Puritan New England. It's just insane that the same guy who was so far ahead of his time in that regard was the same unhinged religious zealot that advocated that 'spectral evidence'- i.e. prophetic dreams and demonic visitations- be admissible as evidence in court during the Salem witch trials.
Look at it this way. Cotton markedly lacked skepticism compared to his peers. When this came to actually believing Onesimus about the successful practice of inoculation in Africa, rather than being blinded by racism, that was great. When it came to believing the reported visions of young girls about who was seen consorting with the devil… it was less great.

Now let us speak "Lord Have Mercy" 40 times, stand up straight for 3-hour long services (I know, they're so short!), and celebrate the completion of fasts with more fasting
I suspect the fasting after fasting may have been more of a survival tactic in the old days.
But, anyway, thou art a wretched finner, etc, etc.
@@eldorados_lost_searcher I mean maybe, but the Orthodox will do their 40 days of Lent before Holy Week rather than including it as part of them, and then sing joyously about completing the 40 days, let's fast some more!
@@kadmii I am a former Protestant who converted to the Orthodox faith. I know exactly what you mean about fasting!
The Puritan strain is actually Not Really That Common in Western Christianity, which is unfortunate (IMO) because it had a lot of good aspects we associate with American governance as well - respect for authority from learning rather than blood descent, disrespect for nobility & kings, decentralization (distrust of setting up a Patriarch / Bishop / etc.), being very community-focused, and so on. They founded Harvard, after all. The Puritan's modern descendants, the Congregationalists, are pretty cool but extremely tiny in proportion to "Western Christianity", although some elements are shared, sure. Not enough, though - the US has got independent charismatic "evangelical" churches that are decentralized for example, but certainly don't consider the most educated members their leaders nor give a fig about the rest of their community, for example.
