The Witchfinder General Reacts to the Exoneration of the Last Salem Witch
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- Ill tidings from Andover, i'the County of Essex: Elizabeth Johnson, Jr., a slave of the Devil convicted of witchcraft in the late trials at Salem, is to be formally exonerated of her diabolical crimes. Thus, the Witchfinder General of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay, driven by conscience of duty to God, shall utterly refute the protestations of those faithless witch-advocates who doubt that that the court at Salem judged aright.
"What's up with the weird accent?" It's a rendition of Original Early Modern English Pronunciation, commonly abbreviated as OP, an accent reconstructed by a linguist and Shakespeare scholar that's our best guess as to what people in southern England sounded like in the 17th century.

I gotta say, the Witchfinder General has been growing on me. If he had a primetime cable talk show, I'd watch it.
Ah, one who sees the Lord’s truth through the eyes of his most diligent servant!
the witchfinder general interviewing the satanic celebrities of Hollywood. That would make for great television.
idk know about host, but he would've been a great late 90s-early 00s late night with conan character
I can't stop laughing about this. Uh yeah, your family might be crazy for watching FOX or even OAN, but MY family gathers round to watch the good old Real Puritan Beliefs of the VVitchfinder General every night

What does it say about me that being berated for corruption and unworthiness by the Witchfinder General just makes my day?

I cracked up when DiZoglio referred to Elizabeth Johnson as "the last witch", even though the whole point of this was to exonerate her of the false charge of practicing witchcraft.
She's a politician. She knows that the average voter is an imbecile and must be spoken to as one, in order for some form of communication to take place.
It sounded cooler, I guess. Also she was as much of a witch as the others who were condemned.
She admitted to being a witch and signing the Devil's book. How do you exonerate someone from a confession they gave? She was and still is a witch!
@@MaterialMenteNo Meaning 100% witch?

I asked myself what kind of relationship did the Witchfinder General have with his mother?

I’d love a series depicting his adventures in witch-hunting. It would be a great plot to see him convicting criminals based on evidence and rules that made perfect and logical sense in his time, but would be considered cruel and superstitious in ours.
Nothing is scarier than a villain whose playing perfectly by the rules
He'll run into Klaus at some point. That'll be a meeting for the history books.
@@alun7006 I think that happened in one of the "Checkmate Lincolnites!" episodes.
To be honest, a lot of those techniques are still being used, even if not openly. "Encouraging" confessions through threats and lies, for example. And juries still give vastly more weight to confessions, even false ones, than to physical evidence.
Crossover with Frozen 50's Man
I find it kinda weird how Puritans would categorically reject all claims of miracles and the supernatural but still be so obsessed with witchcraft.
they didn't reject the concept of the supernatural. Puritans merely believed that all magic was evil and satanic. Their rejection of miracles was on the grounds that they were not holy and miraculous, but rather satanic.
Because with the comming of Hesus the time of miracles came to an end. He was the final miracle. Everything else which is supernatural from their on can only be the work of the devil!
From *The Salem Witch Hunt: A Brief History with Documents* :
“According to the worldview embraced by most New Englanders, God was constantly at work in their day-to-day lives…on some occasions God inflicted warning [against sinners] himself; on others he allowed the Devil to act on his behalf, perhaps through a human witch.”
(8-9)
So basically, they actually did believe in magick and the supernatural

Love the witchfinder general as always (Matthew Hopkins would be proud)! I do want to point out this interesting constitutional wrinkle in what he says here, though:
@6:47 - “The Johnson Girl had nought to fear from his majesty’s justices”
This sounds as though he believed the Courts of Judicature which covered the witch trials were royal courts. In fact, while Massachusetts Bay had recently lost the power to elect its own governors in favor of a royal appointee, the charter of 1691 reserved to the elected General Court the power of erecting judicatory courts.
“And wee doe of our further Grace certaine knowledge and meer mocon Grant Establish and Ordaine for Vs our heires and Successors that the great and Generall Court or Assembly of our said Province or Territory for the time being Convened as aforesaid shall for ever have full Power and Authority to Erect and, Constitute Judicatories and Courts of Record or other Courts to be held in the name of Vs Our heires and successors for the Hearing Trying and Determining of all manner of Crimes Odences Pleas Processes Plaints Accons Matters Causes and things whatsoever ariseing or happening within Our said Province or Territory or between persons Inhabiting or resideing there whether the same be Criminall or Civill and whether the said Crimes be Capitall or not Capitall and whether the said Pleas be Reall personall or mixt and for the awarding and makeing out of Execution thereupon To which Courts and Judicatories wee doe hereby for vs our heirs and Successors Give and Grant full power and Authority from time to time to Administer oathes for the better Discovery of Truth in any matter in Controversy or depending before them.” (From the MA Charter of 1691)
Increase Mather’s success at procuring a new charter with a powerful assembly meant that the Salem Witch Trials were not the King’s justice, but MA’s justice.
Also also, technically the Witch Trials occurred during the joint reign of William and Mary, so it wouldn’t be just the King’s Justice but “their majesties’ justice”!
These are but quibbles. Thank you for a delightful video!
Very true - the court records of Johnson's examination refer to "their majests Justices". Not sure why I wrote "his" instead, but I think we could chalk it up to the WFG's putrid sexism.
salem.lib.virginia.edu/n83.html
@@AtunSheiFilms That’s very interesting! I wonder if perhaps MA’s magistrates were claiming royal backing through the charter (as if to say that anything they did was, by definition, in the name of William and Mary).
Thank you again! I love this series
A NEW VVITCHFINDER AND CHECKMATE LINCOLNITES IN THE SAME MONTH???!? Thank you Atun-Shei! Your spoiling us!
Tis a glad tidings the good lord sought to bless us with this day
You're spoiled. I'm satiated.
As an Englishman fascinated by the linguistic changes to my language over time, your OP is great bloody fun :)
A lot of places in the USA have settlers offspring who still sound english when saying some words. east coasters still add a 'er' to saw
I'm legitimately pumped for the witchfinder movie. Your OP is mind blowing
"I had rather dwell with a lion, or a dragon, than keep house with a wicked woman" ah, so the witchfinder general is a furry
Possibly a scaly.
He can't be though. That would make him partial to the sin of beastiality. And that would require him to be delivered to the magistrate in the shire in which he dwells. If the magistrate deem him to be guilty, he shall be put to instant death. And we all know that he is a godlay man.
I really needed some new VVitchfinder General to hold me over for the Sudbury Devil.
A third comment! The maleus maleficarum was written by a man who genuinely hated middle aged women and elder women. Reading that book is like reading the manifesto of a misogynistic serial killer.
There's a really good video on the history of witches in media, I think its by in praise of shadows, that breaks down briefly what kind of man Kramer was. I'll link it later if I remember.
It's a pretty vile book.
Man, Kramer really lost his mind after the end of Seinfeld
In Praise of Shadows, yes. His series about witches was really interesting. Tried reading the MM because of it. Stopped trying eventually.
It's seriously distressing that his reaction to being correctly told to knock it off about persecuting Helena Scheuberin was to write a justification for tormenting and killing as many other women as possible.
Not to mention antisemitism. Malleus Malificorum is based on an older work called Malleus Judeorum.
I want the Witchfinder General to do movie reviews, he seems like he'd have interesting ideas about cinema

THE GOAT IS BACK
“Goat?”
Doth thou mean to claim that the VVitchfinder General takes the shape of a familiar? Thou surrely blasphemes to blakken the purre as so!
I’ve always wondered; if the puritans truly did believe there was a massive coven of dozens upon dozens of evil witches who could inflict bodily damage upon them in their dreams, what’s as their explanation for the fact that there was no organized resistance from this massive, unified coven of magic wielders?
I imagine the motivation was similar to our modern "culture war."
My general rule about beliefs that groups have, and this is especially true with historical groups or groups that are culturally different from me, is that most people actually believe the things they say they do/did, even if I personally find those believes ridiculous or morally reprehensible.
You believe that gangs of thieves/rapists/murderers exist, don’t you? So why is there no organised resistance from these massive, unified gangs?
I imagine they would see it as a proof of the supremacy of their Christian faith, and the power of Godly men over Satan's minions. The fact that the evil witches were powerless to stop them was only more proof. They had been in league with a power which was forced to desert them when confronted by the Righteous, which in itself showed their power had come from the devil. Everything that happens will become evidence of the conspiracy for a believer.
Yeah, what this guy said. They must've reasoned that they could do such things, of course, but not to the truly pious, as God would protect them, and give them power to exorcise any conjured demons.

The mere mention of Cotton Mather makes my nose wrinkle; Must be allergies.
"The children were subject to hysterical fits, which he detailed in Memorable Providences.[15] In his book, Mather argued that since there are witches and devils, there are "immortal souls." He also claimed that witches appear spectrally as themselves.[16] He opposed any natural explanations for the fits; he believed that people who confessed to using witchcraft were sane; he warned against performing magic due to its connection with the devil." from Wiki.
