Hikaru is right - by playing online he has given a huge amount of joy back to the community even if 99.9% of the players lost within 2 min. There is no other sport where this happens. Losing to Hikaru is a dream for many of us!
Hikaru makes an interesting point about the fact that online chess allows people to more easily play a lot of games against high rated players. Do yall think that this might be affecting older players ability to improve/maintain their edge? Because there are a lot of players who have exceeded expectations for their age, Hikaru included in that statement, also thinking of Vishy. A lot of people say that you can't really get super good at an older age because younger players have a higher cognition and more time, but maybe just raw access to high level play was a large limiting factor?
When I take myself on how much time I had as a kid in relation to how fast I learned, memorized and reacted, there is no way that this older me of today can do anything against the me as a kid, esp. with the resources offered online. So what Hikaru is saying seems very plausible to me.
i think the key thing is that with online chess.. the pool of players has certainly increased.. and thus potentially opening the higher likeliness of finding the next superstar level players..

Yes, he has an abrasive personality at times. He has a big chip on his shoulder, and believes everyone is trying to undermine or discredit him. This, and his hate for losing, has given rise to some rather some toxic moments. But he's also a very humble guy. He's undeniably been the biggest chess presence on the internet, second only to perhaps Levy - but in another stratosphere in terms of skill. For him to sit on stream, several hours a day, playing kids who he *knows* will study his game, who he *knows* will elevate their play level... all for us the viewers to sit back and appreciate. It's incredible to live in such an era. Not to mention, the funding of some kids travel expenses & coaching, just because he learned that the family couldn't afford his tournament expenses... that's beautiful. And beautiful that he kept it private on stream until asked about it in interviews.

Wow that answer about his biggest contribution being the work he did to help the next generation be better is excellent. Surprisingly humble from someone this accomplished.
Hikaru, for some reason, has this reputation for being kind of a jerk. However, I've found that if you watch the interviews he gives and the casual banter he has in chats like this, that he's a very down-to-Earth, levelheaded, agreeable guy. I've long told people to pay attention to his interviews; in particular the times when he talks about his own play. He's the first to be critical of his own play and to give credit to his opponents when they play well. So, as far as his "reputation" is concerned, I just don't get it. It could very well be the holdover from his late teen years when he was, admittedly, pretty obnoxious on ICC. That was a long time ago, folks!
Levi, this has nothing to do with the video but I'm 40 years old and learned to play as a child, but never played much past age 9. I doubt I would have done this had UA-cam not recommended your channel. Thanks
When Hikaru talks about allowing kids to play one of the best chess players in the world, that's just crazy to me. He's not like oh yeah I'm pretty good at chess, or oh yeah I'm a beast at chess, He's literally like yeah out of 9 billion people on earth there's probably four or five that are better than me at chess. Crazy but true.
would love to hear Hikaru's take on Magnus's suggestion that long games should be reserved for fisher random and leave conventional chess for timed/rapid games due to the level of openings amongst the top players
I liked the interview, but HK saying @31:15 that only he and Levy are the only two making chess content "day after day" -- and LR's list of chess content creators @35:33 -- and not mention the Chessbrahs... WTF? Hansen's experience of chess + university + streaming was the same a LR's, but years earlier and still continuing.
😆That is pretty funny. Mind you, I guess there are some 2000 GMs about, so even if your ear is very close to the ground in the chess world and you know (of) about 40 GMs, you've still never heard of 98% of them.
For gambling over chess games, I think it would really have to be games like Chess 960 or something that dissentivizes draws. Maybe a version of the game where a draw gives each player 0 | 0 or -1 | -1 instead of 0.5 | 0.5
Hikaru is such a responsive guy and he doesn't hesitate to answer questions and is never dull answering them, he's clearly a better celebrity than Magnus, he'll be a much more entertaining world no.1
I think it's a little disingenuous that Levy didn't mention the two biggest chess streamers that contributed to the rise of the game leading into covid. That would be Jerry from the chess Network and of course Antonio radic (Agadamator). Unfortunately Jerry 's not nearly as popular anymore possibly because he might have a little bit of burnout being in the game so long. But Antonio is definitely still a major Force, and I would say if I had to choose just one chess content creator to watch, I would still stick with Antonio.
Hikaru should challenge Kramnik to an OTB blitz match with say 10 games so Hikaru can adopt baby K. It would be hilarious watching Kramnik trying to find the report button on the table.

This eloquent response is further evidence that gravity is still in existence. 😂😂😂

Awesome interview, thank you so much for your content and everything you do for chess! You are largely responsible for me getting into the game pretty late in life, but I continue to learn so much from you and Hikaru that I'm seeing my ELO slowly go up.
You 100% can be a grandmaster, and I am SO excited to be part of that journey! Keep being awesome, forget the haters, and remember always when you sit down at the board: YOU ARE A LIVING LEGEND. I fully believe you can and WILL get the mental game in check (pun intended) and allow your strength at the board to shine.
