Yes. He's great. He has a passion and enthusiasm about the game. Sad to hear some say he's "mansplaining" it to her. He just has passion and love for the game and wants others to experience the same joy....
He’d probably be a great coach for kids who are beginners. He’d have to do two things though … tidy up his opening play and (this is what I taught kids as a chess coach myself) always assume your opponent is actually a good player no matter what they look like i.e. always treat your opponent with respect.
He might not be a chess grandmaster but he’s clearly an advance player and a master storyteller. And what a beautiful reaction when he realized he’s playing against the real deal. The lack of ego and all the excitement he expressed could only come from true wisdom. Mom might have resented a little bit his condescending tone at first but you could tell she realized at the end its was all theatrical fun for him. A way to amuse himself in the most benign way. Beautiful interaction! Humanity at its best. ❤
He is clearly not after winning the game. He willingly blundered his knight just to tell his story, and so that a move later he can teach that trading favors whoever has more material. There is no ego in this for him. Only the joy of spreading chess as wide as he can.
He was good enough to know he had been had and she was much better than she feigned. His reaction was great. " You tricked me. I shouldn't even saying anything you know more than me." Very humble and then he excitedly wanted to play a grandmaster to really test himself. Amazingly sincere interaction
I LOVE his reaction when he learned she's a GM. He wasn't angry, he got even more excited. That's being truly humble and that pure reaction, you can't fake it.

This actually brought a tear to my eye right at the end there.. Johnny is SO enthusiastic and his reaction to finding out she was a Grandmaster was just so touching. What a beautiful soul he is.
Nah, he,'s too fond of listening to himself perorate instead of engaging the other person. He should have assessed his student's level of understanding before starting lecturing. A good teacher listens to his students.
I think he's a really nice guy, he assumed she was a beginner but not in a disrespectful way. It is so cute to see how excited he is about the game and even when she wins him how excited he is about her mom's tactic!
I would assume that most people that I come across are beginners, considering that only 10% of people play chess with any amount of regularity. And the fact that I can only probably recognize about 7 chess masters by their face. Male or female, living or dead.
@@kamegoshin8954 Good question. He was tricked in my eyes, as he very sincerely wanted to introduce 2 ladies to the wonderful game of chess. We can have a long talk whether or not it was 'ok' for him to 'simply' assume the both could not play, but then we 1) enter into the fair assumptions based on probability from experience one always makes to assess a situation and 2) based on their very hesitant responses resulting on his heartily invite. The moment they kept quiet on his first basic introduction/questions, the 'trick'/ 'lie' started. Also keeping quiet can be a lie/trick. And in this case certainly. And consciously purposefully even, as it would make 'a great video' if done respectfully. And this great man's response made it indeed a good clip.
@@SPDLand you don't pay enough attention. He knew the daughter from a former match, and he knows how good she is, in the end, he says he had a thought from the beginning. Maybe it seems he was tricked, and maybe he was in a quite lovely way, but I think it was a gift for him to play with her.

Gotta be honest. This IS patronizing. Cutting Anna of each time she tries to say something. Not asking anything about the skill level or the level of support she wants. How in the world are you not receiving that as patronizing. He is literally telling a GM what to do because in his mind she could know anything about the game for some reason
@@TheJensPeeters Eh it's only really "patronizing" because we know the mom is a GM. Of course you don't mind making the assumption that you're better than her just because you're a man and feel the need to explain everything even the things you don't have expertise in, okay chief.

Every new chess player should watch this. I’m fairly new and I picked up chess leisurely because I like strategy games… but I’ve found myself enjoying the psychology of it more than the playing itself. I love the way techniques and strategies are so relatable to many life experiences. There are so many perspectives that you can tell that even two people playing the same game on the board are not actually playing the same game in their mind.
You don't need strategy at chess. The strategy led your forces to the battlefield. No allies on both sides will switch sides or join later. Now is the end of strategy and the beginning of tactics. You open the battle with a standard formstion and build your swift and unexpected tactics around it.
@@jarlnils435strategy and tactics are the same thing. If you really want to make them different, strategy is more long term, and tactics are short term actions that achieve the goal in which your strategy wanted.
He is such a good teacher and coach. He sets a scene and explains the concept in context of a literal battlefield. Every chess player should be coached by this type of person.

@@theultimatewarlord69420 He kept flipping pieces over, trying to put them in a new position. Tried to make a move, when it wasn't his turn. The story he told was just misdirection, to hide his rather bad sleight of hand. Doesn't work against a strong player though. Mrs. Cramling can probably recreate the whole game from memory, to this day.
@@ohareair552 He didn't believe that for long. He's a hustler, play for money. Don't let the video title fool you, this routine of his is his go-to form of misdirection. What a delightful fellow. Especially how he took the news that he’d been played. Fair enough he made the assumption and launched right into some form of innocent prejudice without asking any real pertinent questions (you hear mum or dad and your mind goes in a certain direction) but still, it was a little mean exposing him like that. But gee he showed so much wholesome character. What a lovely bloke. 😊
He was so excited to play a game with someone better than him, he obviously loves learning and wants others to learn, hence why he took the time. What a cool guy.
I used to play a miniatures game and got really good at it. It gets to a point where beating new people is boring. The best victories are against the loudmouths.
Yeah I love that he was genuinely trying to teach someone chess, and even when he found out he was being trolled he didn't get upset, he actually got more excited and just wanted another shot at it, all teachers should be like this.
I love being an advocate for a hobby. Introducing others to it and helping them get to the point that they can run screaming into thenight with the hobby is the best feeling.

I hope everyone gets to feel those kinds of feelings for something they're passionate about. It's truly amazing.
When I first saw this video I was worried that it was going to be condescending but he wasn’t at all. He was just super happy the whole time
Yes. He's great. He has a passion and enthusiasm about the game. Sad to hear some say he's "mansplaining" it to her. He just has passion and love for the game and wants others to experience the same joy....

This guy is a gem. I want to be that enthusiastic always about everything.

Every new chess player should watch this. I’m fairly new and I picked up chess leisurely because I like strategy games… but I’ve found myself enjoying the psychology of it more than the playing itself. Im a casual chess player. This guy explained it in a way where i understood strategy. Ive always had 0. Awesome teacher he is!!
Yeah but that's only the beginning. Mid and end game can be a lot more complicated
You don't need strategy at chess. The strategy led your forces to the battlefield. No allies on both sides will switch sides or join later. Now is the end of strategy and the beginning of tactics.
You open the battle with a standard formstion and build your swift and unexpected tactics around it.
