What an an outstanding interview! Usually when a non-chessplayer interviews a chessplayer, the questions are not very specific and not really interesting for a chess audience - but this one is completely different. Mr. Tangen was very well prepared for this talk and created a comfortable atmosphere which made Magnus reveal a lot of things about himself and about professional chess that I had not heard before.
You can feel how relaxed Magnus is and that he enjoys giving this interview. I don't see him being like this around chess players. Which says a lot about Magnus.
It's very rare to see Magnus being so engaged, frank and cheerful in an interview. He tends to give off the impression that he doesn't wanna be there most of the times. But not here! Truly a wonderful interview!!
This has to be easily the best chess interview I've ever seen. Credit to both, but especially to Magnus for sharing his very interesting perspective and approach to the game!

I'm neither a chess or an investor person but I find the paralel between the two skill sets fascinating. There's so much to learn about the mind and these questions were excellent to do so.
By far, the best interview of Magnus Carlsen I've ever seen. I came away from this interview thinking he's an incredibly well grounded man, very insightful about his chess career but also about life in general. I think he made a very good decision stepping away from the classical world chess championship although I wasn't happy as a chess player when I first heard this. But he somehow seems much happier now than from what I remembered about him back then...much more relaxed and happy within himself. Actually I get even more of a kick watching him play chess on UA-cam than I did watching him play several world chess championships. His personality really comes out in his UA-cam games...which can't be said for classical chess playing. He certainly seems to be enjoying his chess career more now than back then. Cheers from Canada!
@@ryanhughes1101 I thought he enjoyed the interview and making connections between decision making skills in chess and the financial world. I like when Magnus said overthinking can definitely get someone into problems with regard to chess...it's also a true insight for daily living.
@@ryanhughes1101 Yes, agreed. I think deep down he knows he's still the best chess player in the world so why should he have to put up with all that stress...plus I've even heard him say something to the effect "let others share in the limelight."
When you hear Magnus talk about his thinking and decision making process it’s very obvious why he’s also had great success with fantasy premier league as well as chess. What a brilliant mind
It's always a fun time to hear Magnus, really, anyone at the top of their game, talk about something outside of their normal area of expertise 👏🏼 This is amazingly refreshing. It's clear he's truly engaged in the conversation.
I suppose you are not aware of the whole range of the criterias of a good interviewer. Tanger is not a professional, and it's obvious in many ways in this interview (which was defenately okay, even excellent for a layman). So say rather that he's the one you've liked the most . It would be more intellectually honest.
@@Ari-PekkaKaipiainen Do share links or information on what makes a good interviewer (I'm actually curious). Anyway, I will submit that this interview is one of the very best gerneral interviews (not by chess experts) that Magnus Carlsen has ever done
When he says that he meets really smart people, he absolutely means it. Especially as a man of his stature, he probably buts heads with extremely influential people, so I’m not surprised he experiences imposter syndrome.
Excellent interview. Magnus seemed so engaged, and I think a big part of that was the questions asked - deep questions, but one’s targeting specific, complicated aspects of *playing chess*, something Magnus has ruminated about for his entire life. Seeing him try to express his thoughts and explore them in real time is fascinating.
crystal clear cameras with great angles and backgrounds, great questions, enjoyable listening to this interview with chess's greatest magnus, thank you. enjoyed understanding the innerworkings of his mind more
Fantastic interview with Magnus, loved it. I'm going to subscribe to your channel after hearing that. I was impressed by your interview and thought you asked interesting questions. Well done.
at fifteen minutes in, i could not fathom how Magnus' great chess play translates into better decision making skills going forward...be more conservative, when the markets are risky, and vice versa. that's about it.
I thought I knew what a great interviewer sounded like, but this guy takes the cake. Such a welcome change after the many pretenders out there online these days. Patience, great pacing, great questions. Awesome!
Fantastic interview! Disregarding the fact that he is the greatest grandmaster of his time (in my opinion, all time), it's his humble attitude, even-keeled attitude and undying curiosity that make him my favorite player. Great advice at the very end of the video.
This is an amazing interview. Magnus is obviously very thoughtful and the interviewer really asked the right sequence of questions over and over. Well done sir
Knowing something about chess and investing. Then listening to this conversation was enlightening about the similarities and the way our brains work and how to work life
Awesome interview!!! Question and letting guest talk till he finishes! Rare to see this days for sure! Most often, they ask a question and then in middle of answer they get idea or remember something else that they wanted to ask,or the worst part when they get new idea from part of answer and can't wait for guests to finish because they are excited thinking they are so smart to come up with that question and that people will say woooow what a great question 🎯...but more often than not,it is not that great and only you get is not letting guest answering freely! One again great interview, and Magnum is such a unique person, it's lovely that we get opportunity to pick his brain just a bit.
Amazing conversation. To me it makes sense that he takes risks after losing considering his mindset is to learn. You'll hit a bump on the learning curve which drives you to get over it as quicly as possible and push yourself
I've always suspected Magnus's main talent was intuition, but I'm surprised how much engine exploration - specifically to find new ideas - has been apart of the scene the past 6 years.
To me it is more interesting how well they both are speaking a second language. Pretty much all Norwegians speak English as well of course, but the classic "Norwegian English Accent" is pretty much absent here.
Thank you for letting him fully answer the questions and not cutting him off in mid thought. So many interviewers fail here, unfortunately.
And remember, this guy is an investor. Wiki him, pretty cool guy

It's amazing that a guy in finance made a much more interview out of a chess player than chess journalists themselves.
