An Interview with Hikaru Nakamura

somewhere in the future: I confessed to Hikaru Nakamura.
Seeing levy appreciating rising chess players melts my heart. This Hikaru guy seems good at chess, he has a bright future ahead
very kind of Levy to include small streamer like Hikaru in his videos
Hikaru has been in chess for like 25 years
@@JamesMiller-lb3sk and now he finally gets the exposure he deserves, thanks to levy.
@@JamesMiller-lb3sk yeah, it's called a bloody joke, my fren
@@JamesMiller-lb3sk who?
Levy never fails to give small chess players like Hikaru the spotlight. Good job!
I heard he's actually a pretty famous streamer. Impressive he got this far in his hobby
Small chess player? Haha He’s one of the best players in the world, and he has like over 2 million followers on YT lol
😊
@@redjuggernaut5949 r/whoosh
@@redjuggernaut5949 yes he's still small he's like 5'5
FINALLY!!! They can see each other face to face without a screen between them. The meet up we all wanted
But didn't deserve
They actually meet more often then u think
Magnus never fails to include Hikaru in Levy's videos.
I see what you did there 😂
I had a stroke reading this i couldn't stop laughing🤣🤣🤣
loooool
A+
Magnus is the cameraman
this is literally like 2 online friends finally meeting up after years
friends, yeah exactly!

No it's not

right? finally theyre meeting hell yeah!!
bro explained his emotions in 3 min what a legend.
Can’t help but notice that Levy has gotten really good at this. Interviews, commentating, entertaining. All of it is pretty impressive.
I was gonna say this same thing. He is super goofy on streams and on yt but damn he knows how to clean up and can seriously interview, dudes a natural at it. And he's a great commentator
@@SnipeyGaming facts
Yeah I thought so too, this is real good stuff. Probably helps that they are pretty good friends
Interview starts with Levy messing up with rating number. Then his first phrase: "I don't even know, where to begin". Levy has gotten really good with interviews, haha.
He definitely has a gift, a great story teller too and the way he frames concepts. I think that far exceeds his already insane chess skills.
What an honor for him to meet one of the best chess players of all time. Hikaru Is so lucky
wow, this comment is soo original, i am shocked you wasn't pinned.
The funny thing is, because he's an IM Levy is still in the top 4,000 players ever to play the game. Out of hundreds of millions, he's definitely one of the best.
hAHA memes are real
You know there's something wrong when there's something wrong - Levy Nakamura
Bro blundered irl
@@Maongap huh
Bro is sharply dressed to confront Hikaru. Love to see it.
“Confronted” gotta respect Levy’s clickbait game. It’s an art and he makes it look easy
Really enjoy Levy's question line. It all feels very natural. Also the chessboard overlay to help explain what Hikaru is saying is really helpful.
Almost like everyone here all watched the same video
@@Bennysolwhat are you trying to do here? because your comment makes no sense at all😂
A great interview needs two things: the guy who asks nice open questions without interrupting the interviewee and the interviewee to be talkative. This interview is outstanding. Thank you Gentlemen
fr
Levy’s little nods to show Hikaru he’s listening and not interrupting are perfect
@@juanlondono2317yah tbh Levy is a great interviewer 😊
Awesome interview. I don't even play chess but sometimes casually watch it and I do agree this was a fantastic interview.

was definitely an intentional choice of words for clicks or algorithm things
Wtf?
Levy looks 6'6 here and Hicky looks 4'6.
Im so proud he finally met the person he's been looking up to..im really proud of hikaru!!!
Now we need a Gotham X Hans and it will complete the trifecta of Gotham interviewing the people whom he clickbaits with the most 💀
😂fr
Oddly enough i think that interview would actually be very cordial and Hans actually gets to explain his side of the drama that surrounds him. That or troll event where hans and Gotham are just messing with each other in good spirits.
Levy never fails to milk Magn- oh wait never mind.
Magnum Ice-cream?
"I confronted Magnus greatest rival"
Oh that's quite good

Gotham blundered the intro
He‘s chosen a bad opening 😊
@@MrDocninjayes, this opening could have closed the King too much. This isn't lost for Levy just because King itself took care of the game.
Levi, this is a really, really good video. It is also an incredible interview. I didn't (necessarily) expect you to get such deep and retrospective answers from Hikaru, but I'm glad you did. From some rando commenting on your video, I hope you feel proud of how well this went.
I can’t believe Gotham finally met Hikaru! Congrats
they talked something like 100 times, and i’m pretty sure he saw him at least at the champion chess tour finals
@@fedeeee8068source? I dont think chess players know chess youtubers in general
We met back in 2019 in a world far, far away.

You've provided such a deep insight into the mental and emotional battle of a competitive chess player, where pressure and expectations can sometimes overshadow the enjoyment of the game itself.
It's really cool how he talks about Magnus being a kind of insurmountable wall with such honesty.
I might be imagining things but I feel like his personality actually improved a lot, I sense more calm and kindness than a few years ago.
He really has a new edge to his game as well.
My gut says he might very well end up challenging Ding. Very curious what that would look like. Anyway (never thought I'd say this) I'm rooting for him!
Hickey for World Champ!
I'm actually surprised that a top player like Hikaru would resign himself to that view of Magnus. I can't help but feel that his mentality is limiting him. A big reason why Magnus is able to maintain his dominance is that he has convinced himself that he is the best in the world.
you definitly need more interview videos. these are great
You'd never know these guys used to pull shenanigans together daily by how professionally this interview was done.
9:20 Imagine dedicating your life to a specific niche skill like chess. Practicing over and over. The discipline to (almost) never blunder a piece or a game. But no matter how hard you try, there's a guy out there who NO ONE has even a sliver of hope of beating because he is simply too good. The number 3 guy said that in the early candidates when he was working his hardest hoping to be world champion he started to realize that no one, not even himself, had any chance of beating. It's really crazy how dominate Carlson is/was.
I wonder how much that actually removes the joy out of a game or sport for everyone.
Like no matter how hard you try, there's that one person who is just going to being better than you or anyone else.
There's no one named Carlson in the top 100.
@@ChocolateMilk.. Yes there is he's called Mognus Carlson
@@Johncornwell103 I mean....isn't that true for anything? even jobs?
@@vercot7000
The whole point people play sports and games is to win and be better than your opponent.
You don't play a game trying to lose most of the time.
Imagine in your neighborhood there's someone who is even better than Michael Jordan at his peak who regularly asks you to play some one vs one games.
Eventually playing basketball wouldn't be fun anymore because you always get beat no matter how hard you try.
Well done, nice interview ... I hope Hikaru does really well this time around.
Hikaru realizing his biggest weakness is how nervous he gets over the board and trying to remain calm this time
Great interview. Good questions and transition from one question to the other. The conversation flows and yet there are no interruptions, Great job!
I love these type of interviews. The friendship they have makes it feel like Hikaru answers questions more whole heartedly. I love it
Excellent interview, nice to see a player talking openly around internal thoughts and feelings rather than just chess notations and opening
So glad to see you 2 back together! Makes me smile thinking about the collabs you did years ago! 😄
Hikaru is so open and honest
ngl this is a fire interview 🤣, interviewer asks good questions and shuts up interviewee answers with in depth responses. with few if any interruptions. good work
Levy never fails to include Hikaru in his videos.
where magnus :(
Except on this video it was clickbait
Super interesting to hear “Most top chess players definitely are not huge fans of chess” - not a perspective I’ve really considered before, but it makes sense. When you put in the time and effort to do something professionally, it’s going to feel like a job and not be that enjoyable.
It’s still kind of sad though, but happy to see it’s not always the case.
When I first read this title, I thought I had subscribed to Vladimir Kramnik.
😂😂😂
I really enjoyed this inside perspective into Hikaru's mind and his growth in chess up to this day.
Really well done interview.
Really good interview! Fascinating topics. Thanks to both of you for the discussion.
My 2 favorite chess players talking, the best video ever!
I missed this collab sm, brings me back to better times
Levy’s interview skills have gotten so good! Great questions, good job letting them feel comfortable and speak.
I love the fact that you share the second part on his channel. How noble! And commercially sound....
Good to see levy at the candidates... Good for popularity of the event... Hopefully fide also releases the interviews soon
Is he commentating?
this discussion is gonna be ranked as gm level conversation before levy
Great video, love to see hikaru and levy discussing chess as always.
Bravo fantastic interview loved the questions and even more so the answers!
Original title was “I edged Hikaru Nakamura” in case anyone was wondering.
This is closest levy will ever get to becoming a grandmaster
Love the setup! Maybe next time try and relax a bit, it would be amazing to see you guys just have a conversation!❤ This felt a bit too much like a interview, but still love the contet!
Great interview - really enjoyed it.
'Confronted' definitely the wrong word....
clickbait duh
It’d be fantastic for the game if Hikaru won the candidates. The pineapple sponsorship alone would be massive. Big fruit has deep pockets.
So happy to see my hometown hosting so many high level chess tournaments lately! Hope you all enjoy your stay here in Toronto 🤗
glad to see you two back together again!! like the good old days
I feel like Nakamura hasnt been given his flowers yet,the man is a gem for chess
I can agree
I disagree. The man has a toxic personality. Got a little better the last few years but I would never call him a gem for chess.
@PPdabest Exactly this. Even now the facade slips every now and then and his real personality escapes.
@@thebiglebrowski3695 Oh no! he said mean things to people when they suck at chess! who cares
Why don't you give Hikaru a chance to speak?
He is a bit chatty 😂
Love this new direction for Levy, fantastic interview!
Love this video format
Bro confronted Hikaru about his oxygen addiction, very good job levi
His little grin says it all
Thank you so much reminding me of the candidates games
Wow, this is amazing content. Great interview!!!
I hope Levy can make him famous too like he did with Magnus guy
Levy is a cake factory.
Holy moley this was an excellent interview.
your interviews always deliver!
Levy never fails to confront someone
Did Hikaru forget the existence of fullstops💀
?
6:55 I still wouldn't be so sure about Ding Liren defending. There's always the possibility he could be in no state to play given what SC2 can do long term, and in combination with the concept of "saving face", he could still opt out of it at a late stage.
Great to see Levy showcasing up and coming talent in chess.
You know theres something wrong when Levy doesnt clickbait with Magnus
You know there is something wrong when you don’t comment on a video
@@justahuman5342 i would much prefer that tbh. all these people trying to be justin y are just cringe.
I wanna see a Fabi vs. Hikaru world championship. Would be really cool if Magnus did commentary. How sweet would that be?
OMG what a great interview from Levies!
Hikaru is so honest and humble in his answers. Refreshing and provides a lot of insight.
For late people the previous title was"I prepared for candidates with Hikaru nakamua"
Hikaru kept on saying in 2022 that he wasn't a professional player, and was playing nonchalantly and so was setting up an excuse for failure. It seems he's thinking differently now. I find watching Hikaru's streams the most instructive of any streamer. There are lots of non-master streamers who just rely on computer analysis and aren't very insightful except for repeating computer lines. In the case of Hikaru you see and hear the thinking and evaluations of a top player in the world. And when he says a computer suggests a move he doesn't understand, it just highlights how alien computer thinking is if a top player can't even understand some of their move recommendations.
I hope Gotham uploads recap videos for the candidates
Loved the interview ❤
The internet breaking with this irl collab 🔥🔥
Real gotham fans know
Hikaru was Magnus before Magnus was Magnus
What do u mean
@@Nafim-kv6rg yeah bro, you prolly new to the scene, actually how magnus is all over in the chess world and almost everyone in the world knows him, even those who dont play chess, well Hikaru was not that well known but he was the one with all the controversies and dramas, and basically the most well known "personality" in chess. Also, how Levy "glazes and milks" Magnus now, he used to do with hikaru, with sub battles and everything.
Ohh i see thanks mate

What a nice interview. I love it
16:50 Magnus: Motherfxck the big 3, hika it's just big me!
😂😂😂
He's never beaten me♟️
Levy I'm not sure if you'll see this but I wanted to give an objective input that might be valuable to you.
I've watched your videos for some time, never followed closely. It seems like with this video and the interview with magnus that you may be looking to move toward a more media/interviewer/commentator career style. You seem to know a lot about other sports, and you mentioned that you've recently started following NFL closely as well.
Whether you plan on commentating and doing interviews for other sports or just chess, I think you have a unique angle and perspective that would add great value to wherever you go. Your best attribute (imo) is your ability to form a more personable connection between the consumer and the athlete. I think it's great that you ask your interviewees questions about their opinions on things outside their sport, getting to know them as a person and not just the competitor we see. That in combination with your insider knowledge as a player really bridges the gap between viewer and professional.
Thought I'd share my observation, maybe you see what I mean and lean into it a bit more, maybe you've got other plans. Either way keep it up!
2:57 his thought preparation in all of that is so similar to aspects of poker at a very high level the strategic game plan per event etc can be great or a bit of a mess from missed calculated decisions prepping being diverse and versatile helps along the way to overcome miss steps
