Interview starts with Levy messing up with rating number. Then his first phrase: "I don't even know, where to begin". Levy has gotten really good with interviews, haha.
The funny thing is, because he's an IM Levy is still in the top 4,000 players ever to play the game. Out of hundreds of millions, he's definitely one of the best.
A great interview needs two things: the guy who asks nice open questions without interrupting the interviewee and the interviewee to be talkative. This interview is outstanding. Thank you Gentlemen
Levi, this is a really, really good video. It is also an incredible interview. I didn't (necessarily) expect you to get such deep and retrospective answers from Hikaru, but I'm glad you did. From some rando commenting on your video, I hope you feel proud of how well this went.
9:20 Imagine dedicating your life to a specific niche skill like chess. Practicing over and over. The discipline to (almost) never blunder a piece or a game. But no matter how hard you try, there's a guy out there who NO ONE has even a sliver of hope of beating because he is simply too good. The number 3 guy said that in the early candidates when he was working his hardest hoping to be world champion he started to realize that no one, not even himself, had any chance of beating. It's really crazy how dominate Carlson is/was.
I wonder how much that actually removes the joy out of a game or sport for everyone. Like no matter how hard you try, there's that one person who is just going to being better than you or anyone else.
@@vercot7000 The whole point people play sports and games is to win and be better than your opponent. You don't play a game trying to lose most of the time. Imagine in your neighborhood there's someone who is even better than Michael Jordan at his peak who regularly asks you to play some one vs one games. Eventually playing basketball wouldn't be fun anymore because you always get beat no matter how hard you try.
It's really cool how he talks about Magnus being a kind of insurmountable wall with such honesty. I might be imagining things but I feel like his personality actually improved a lot, I sense more calm and kindness than a few years ago. He really has a new edge to his game as well. My gut says he might very well end up challenging Ding. Very curious what that would look like. Anyway (never thought I'd say this) I'm rooting for him! Hickey for World Champ!
I'm actually surprised that a top player like Hikaru would resign himself to that view of Magnus. I can't help but feel that his mentality is limiting him. A big reason why Magnus is able to maintain his dominance is that he has convinced himself that he is the best in the world.
You've provided such a deep insight into the mental and emotional battle of a competitive chess player, where pressure and expectations can sometimes overshadow the enjoyment of the game itself.
Oddly enough i think that interview would actually be very cordial and Hans actually gets to explain his side of the drama that surrounds him. That or troll event where hans and Gotham are just messing with each other in good spirits.

Super interesting to hear “Most top chess players definitely are not huge fans of chess” - not a perspective I’ve really considered before, but it makes sense. When you put in the time and effort to do something professionally, it’s going to feel like a job and not be that enjoyable. It’s still kind of sad though, but happy to see it’s not always the case.
There is something really fascinating in the way Hikaru talks about chess. A mix of extremely deep knowledge and those "GM things" on the one hand and the kind of simplicity that can be understood by almost everyone. 0:000:000:00
I love how Hikaru is a huge Magnus fanboy in a professional way. Hikaru has great sportsmanship and he really is a huge ambassador for Chess in general.
Hikaru kept on saying in 2022 that he wasn't a professional player, and was playing nonchalantly and so was setting up an excuse for failure. It seems he's thinking differently now. I find watching Hikaru's streams the most instructive of any streamer. There are lots of non-master streamers who just rely on computer analysis and aren't very insightful except for repeating computer lines. In the case of Hikaru you see and hear the thinking and evaluations of a top player in the world. And when he says a computer suggests a move he doesn't understand, it just highlights how alien computer thinking is if a top player can't even understand some of their move recommendations.
One thing that I don't quite agree with the standard point of view is that magnus will continue to dominate over chess indefinetely. He appeared in a world very different from nowadays. The chess boom during the pandemic brought many kids into chess and probably with all the resources available nowadays a brilliant kid somewhere will love chess, devour chessable courses and be a superGM with great tactical and positional understanding. If a magnus came in a world with a lot less available imagine who can rise in the future...
I'm glad we have someone like Levy, Super talkative, barely has any drama with other people, good at chess and yet still very humble, always nice and keen to meet people.
6:55 I still wouldn't be so sure about Ding Liren defending. There's always the possibility he could be in no state to play given what SC2 can do long term, and in combination with the concept of "saving face", he could still opt out of it at a late stage.
