Thanks Chopsy for finally riding a new MT-09 🙌 I’ve still got my old 2017 model and the engine is the best thing about that bike 👌. I’d love a new one and hearing you sings it’s praises (when considering the bikes you’ve ridden and own), means it’s a very good bike indeed. I prefer the look of the MT09 over the MT10. You referring to the 2021+ model or the previous? This current MT-09 series is a total revelation from the last version. There's basically nothing about it that is a carry over from before, pretty much everything is entirely redone, remade.
Glad you really like the MT. In addition to the fuel gauge, you can cycle to a fuel burn meter. Every time I fill up the bike, the meter is exact to the tenth of a gallon. Great review.

In the end, I didn't go for it, and bought a new Yamaha Ténéré 700-but even that's gone, now! I'm glad I didn't buy the older model because I later found out about the handling, Neevesy from MCN did a good review on it, and he mentioned the problem. As you say, Chopsy, Yamaha have lowered the front end by 30mm, so it's improved the handling by all accounts. I'm going to look for a new bike in the new year-when it's cold and wet-but I'm taking my time this time around, which is always the best advice.

Having just spent months deliberating on a bike for my return to road from dirt the mt09 made so much sense and ticked every box of desire, except 1, the look back when walking away😫 hence I bit the bullet and got a beautiful street triple RS in carnival red😍
I have an R6 at the moment and I love it so much. Keep coming back to the MT09SP for my next bike as my R6 is getting quite old now... But I'm torn. I love sport bikes. I'm also considering the new CBR600RR. Just can't make my mind up! Really I should go and ride both but even if I love the MT09SP I don't know if in the long run I'll miss having a sport bike...
@matt7R… I’m exactly the same as you …. I’m 43 now and don’t know if I’m too old for a 600rr ( I don’t want a super bike) the mt09 sp seems perfect but I don’t want to regret buying one !!!
@@jonathanmasterson3100update for you - I test rode the MT09 a week ago. MT-09 SP is being delivered in 2 weeks! Traded my 2019 R6 for it. The triple engine is immediately more fun on the road than a 600 screamer. Much more comfortable and miles easier when it comes to slow speed stuff (the R6 is a boat in comparison). I’d say test ride both as your taste may differ but the difference is night and day for me, and this is coming from someone that’s lusted over sport bikes for around 20 years and gave that life up after a year of it! The MT09 is just that good!
Double update as I just realised my old post was about my OLD R6. I traded that 2003 R6 for a 2019 R6 in May. The new bike was much more crisp and refined but also less comfortable as it was even more track focused. So after 2 months on a modern sport bike I gave that life up 😂 just far too taxing on the body for any longer than 30-60 minutes to be fun rather than an endurance.
I want an mt09 to park next to my 2023 zx6r. Ive got my zx6r set up so well I dont think i could ever part with it, but id love an mt09 for just cruising around and enjoying the torque. I love the top end rush of the zx6r though
Lovely review, can't get enough of that triple whine! Would you be looking to do a first ride review of the 2024 model when its out sometime this year? They seem to have changed few things for 2024! I have a r7 and keen to upgrade to mt09sp or the 765rs
I owned a 2018 MT09 SP with the full Akra system, it's a great bike. That engine is a peach, perfect amount of power to get you in (and out) of enough trouble to give you a thrill, but also comfortable for commuting and just kicking about town. For long trips? HA, look elsewhere, fuel tank isn't up to the task, constantly had fuel anxiety. They've gone in an interesting direction with the new styling.. personally doesn't do it for me, if you can find a 2018 model with low mileage then snap it up.
I have owned this bike since 2021 when it first came out done 17k miles on it. This bike is so much fun to ride, plenty of low down torque which never gets old and its much lighter than MT10.
I'd even go as fas to say that the MT-09SP is the epitomy of refined fun. I'm saying this after trying the KTM, the BMW and the Triumph. I initially didn't want to like the MT-09 as I'd convinced myself that a 4.3in TFT was too small. But after being on the Triumph and re-trying an MT-09, I was staggered about how legible everything is on the Yam, even with the smaller TFT. The Triumph in comparison is just a mess.
Great vid as always Chopsy....I will be heading back to the middleweight class once I am done with my S1000R....after your review of the Monster SP I was off to book a test ride.....now to be followed up with the MT09 SP....yes the looks are "Marmite", but nothing a £1000 spent with Pyramid Plastics\Evotech can't improve! The R9 is going to be awesome though....
Got the XSR900, same engine, longer wheelbase and looks ten times better than the MT range. Can't fault it so far, people complained about the looks, but it gets so many comments saying how good it looks. Also black widow does a full system which is pretty cheap and sounds amazing.
@@queenslander954 They are aimed at different people. Struggled to get my hands on the XSR for more than a year. Every dealership was sold out. Probably a supply / demand issue but personal view is it looks much better than any MT

Agreed. Had a 2021 Triple. Test road the new one. Triumph was just boring me, couldn't put finger on it. Rode a 2023 XSR, bingo. Changed and never looked back. Engine and fun factor is superior for me
I hope when the R1 goes the way of the dodo the Mt09sp gets a capacity increase to significantly increase power and torque below 5000 revs. I’ve had one now for just over a year as a daily rider and yes it’s stupid fast and I’ve managed to not damage my license some how. But my net one will possibly be a KTM or Triumph. Yes I don’t like the fuel gauge and the tank capacity also the high beam flasher is not easy to hold on. Might go down a tooth on the front sprocket next service
Got one recently. Exciting fun bike. Only complaint i have is on 1st gear deceleration over run. Closed throttle , I get a sudden hit of engine brake. Anyone else notice this ?
Cant wait to get my 24 SP!! Had to sell my 22 sp when moved from CA-TN, Insert Mel Gibson screaming blue face "FREEDOM!!" Im on the top of list at a few shops on East Coast.
I already made one comment, but here goes. After I have been drooling and dreaming of this bike for years, I went and traded in my 2023 Hornet. I will take delivery of the SP in two days 🤘🏻can’t wait and I’m like a child at Christmas 😂 but that bike looks so sexy!😍and it has all the power I will ever need 😛in country police is at every corner and bush they can hide in 👎🏻 Btw I did order it with comfort seat👌🏻
Couldn’t agree more, I rode a 09 and a ‘10 back to back when looking to change from my 2016 mt09. And I had way more fun throwing the 9 around. I just wish it came with the front master cylinder off the xsr
I have the 2022 SP and couldn't love that bike anymore if I tried. Also, there is no such thing as traffic with this bike. You breeze right by with a flick of the wrist and overtake with ease.
In common with the likes of BMW S1000R, KTM 1290 Super Duke R and more a decent quality aftermarket progressive steering damper is said to remedy the light/sketchy feeling at the front when travelling at speed.
This bike is great and very easy to wheelie. I agree with Chops but has 2 negatives. If you ride in town the steering has no turning radius and the brakes and abs are crap.
My dream bike😍and if everything goes well, I’ll get one this season. Update! I got my baby😍man, this is such a cool looking bike and I can spend hours just looking at it😝now all we need is better weather 🤥
Paid £9895 OTR for my 2021 09SP in August 2021. Probably the best motorcycling purchase i've ever made. I had never been inclined to wheelie on any bike previously......2 years later i'm clutching up everywhere 😂. The only place a Street Triple is better is on a trackday.
Hi chopsy, test rode one of these when they first came out. I was on a vfr at the time. Rode it back to back with a used tuono twin. I didn’t like it except the engine which was a veritable beast. So infectious blasting rolling off blasting rolling off. Totally intoxicating but felt rest of bike didn’t match. Back to a 650 now but at 64 a good idea. The cp3 has got to be best engine ever. Wondered why other manufacturers haven’t joined in. I think your point about useable exciting thrust at road speeds is the most contributory factor to riding on the road not the outright hp. Bikes that go from low rpm are the best imo for the road at least. For me pleeeeeeze give me twin clocks. Old fashioned but they just look the dogs
Compare this thing's specs to those of the Kawa Z900 (more HP, more torque, bigger fuel tank), then check their respective prices, and this Yama quickly becomes a Yama-ha-ha. You've got a brand-spanking new ZX6R for the price of an MT09. I've ridden the Z900 as a replacement bike but was really happy to be on my ZX6R again.
Interesting, l have a 09 SP and it's great but wondered about the Tracer as an alternative especially for touring. The 09 can do it but the triple buzz really transfers to you hands when doing long distance.
Another banger of a video Chopsy 👌 Agree Yamaha are defo putting out some cracking bikes. I certainly loved my 2018 MT10 when I had it. Noticed you're riding in the Furygan Get down boots. How are they? I love my Furygan raptor pants and bullring jacket. Was thinking these would be ideal for casual rides/commuting with 😊
Nice review & a great bike. Regardless of the subjective looks (I don't like them personally but not a deal breaker) it's one of the best value bikes & most bang for your buck on the market imo.
@@512460 me too, I had a MT09 and loved the punch from the engine and the upright ( supermoto position ), when I sat on my S1R I fell in love with the riding position, and the punch. I cam seldom use the top end rush, so starting to think about the 09SP ( 24 ), especially as it has the kit it comes with, I think I’m ruling out the RS now

Told you you’d like it 😂 only downsides I have are slightly wooden brakes but more than enough really and a poor turning circle As for the fuel gauge you just reset trip 2 when you fill up then fill up again around 100-130 miles Or wait until it flashes then you have 15-20 miles left For making quick progress on British roads there’s not much better
Just traded a 2021 Yamaha Mt09 SP in for a 2023 KTM super duke r EVO love the KTM the Yamaha didn't feel as secure. But for the price you get a lot. KTM is the next level. I was just never satisfied with the Yamaha. I owned a Gen 1 and Gen 2 1290 duke so maybe im used to that power. The over all fit finish its hard to beat European motorcycles.
What would be a better bang for buck ? The mt09sp or the striple rs ? I can't decide i'd use it as a commute when the weather is alright but also alot of fun rides in the weekends and after work

nice review as always Chopsy , well done !! this looks to be a much more fun bike than the mt10. Good point about the pikes peak and this bike , as both have 17inch wheels. Between I have the new tracer 9 GT - loads of fun , it could maybe do with a steering dampener, and yes has the same issue with the fuel gauge
It’s marvellous when a standout Fun bike like this one comes along. In my day I think of the RD350,Kawasaki Mach 111 and Mach1V. The fuel blocks on my 1100 B2 used to disappear very quickly. It had fuel injection that made it a very responsive hoon machine. Would adding clip on style sport bars put more weight over the front end?

You have compared the Duke 890R with the Street Triple and the Duke came out on top. Between the MT-09 SP and the Duke 890R, you going to do a comparison?
Great review Chopsy, as always - thank you! If you HAD to buy a bike for fun and quick blasts, and the choice was MT-09 SP or SMT 890, which would you chose and why?
Hi Chops, a little advice please. I'm deciding between a year old mt09 and a brand new hornet 750. The last yamaha I owned was over 40 years ago an LC350, it was huge fun but it felt like it would tank slap every bump, the frame felt a little wobbly and the brakes had no feel (but worked well). The fun easily, massively outweighed the negatives. Since then apart from a hayabusa, fireblade and lastly a gsxs1000 I've owned nothing but gsxr 1000's and 1100's which I love but my body refuses to contort into that riding position now :). Suzuki has pampered me with their ride on rails cornering. I also have always felt that twins (apart from 2 strokes :) ) feel a little agricutural. So given how many times you mentioned the slight vagueness of the mt09 sp front but commend the hornet 750's handling, which would you choose? do they both offer similar levels of fun?
Never judge a book by its cover , great bike . Unfortunately I just don’t like how it looks . In this class and price range so much choice, a test ride is probably the best thing to do . Great video Chops .

Having just spent months deliberating on a bike for my return to road from dirt the mt09 made so much sense and ticked every box of desire, except 1, the look back when walking away😫 hence I bit the bullet and got a beautiful street triple RS in carnival red😍
Happy with street triple rs ?
@@paulbarnes6124 just done 1000 kms and definitely right decision for me love riding it and just as important I love looking at it👍
These videos are coming thick and fast Chopsy! ... Love it. ❤. Thinking of getting the MT10 next year and converting my 636 as a track bike
Absolutely agree with you, Chopsy. It is a bloody fantastic bike! ❤
I know this is an old video but what’s the wind like at “motorway” speeds?…love the channel!!
Only got 2500 miles out of my s22 tyres on new mt10 shocking really but had fun doin it
Like seriously how difficult is it for manufacturers to give a digital litre by litre reading of the fuel remaining.
@matt7R… I’m exactly the same as you …. I’m 43 now and don’t know if I’m too old for a 600rr ( I don’t want a super bike) the mt09 sp seems perfect but I don’t want to regret buying one !!!
How is the build quality and fit/finish on the bike? I am going to get on the wait list for the 2024 model
Lovely review, can't get enough of that triple whine! Would you be looking to do a first ride review of the 2024 model when its out sometime this year? They seem to have changed few things for 2024! I have a r7 and keen to upgrade to mt09sp or the 765rs
That crossplane character 😊
I owned a 2018 MT09 SP with the full Akra system, it's a great bike. That engine is a peach, perfect amount of power to get you in (and out) of enough trouble to give you a thrill, but also comfortable for commuting and just kicking about town. For long trips? HA, look elsewhere, fuel tank isn't up to the task, constantly had fuel anxiety. They've gone in an interesting direction with the new styling.. personally doesn't do it for me, if you can find a 2018 model with low mileage then snap it up.
Looks are improved by a decent screen and rear seat cowl, I have the Gen2 and love it
I have owned this bike since 2021 when it first came out done 17k miles on it. This bike is so much fun to ride, plenty of low down torque which never gets old and its much lighter than MT10.
How has the reliability been ?
@@chriswest2290 it's a yamaha had zero issues
So Chopsy will you choose this over your favourite 1290 duke
That’s gonna be my next bike. Looks stunning, amazing engine. Fun….fun…..fun……
Wait up. The 2024 is about to drop in a few months
Great Video. I love my 2021 MT-09SP. It really is one of the best all around bikes you can buy. Especially with an exhaust and tune.
Oh bugger, another biker that's on my list of my new bike for next year, so many great choices out there
Got the XSR900, same engine, longer wheelbase and looks ten times better than the MT range. Can't fault it so far, people complained about the looks, but it gets so many comments saying how good it looks. Also black widow does a full system which is pretty cheap and sounds amazing.
Yea mate , they look bulky between tank & bottom of the pipe , weird lines compared to the MT , probably why they outsell the XSR by a long way
@@queenslander954 They are aimed at different people. Struggled to get my hands on the XSR for more than a year. Every dealership was sold out. Probably a supply / demand issue but personal view is it looks much better than any MT
@@garethsmith1436my mt has a rad guard and fly screen and a red power can gets looks and crowds at most the meets tbh think people hate them until they see them
Xsr more sporty and fun✊🔥🔥
Already before this video I knew it will be my new purchase, future looks bright
Perfect for those type of roads. 💪
I think the triple in the Yamaha is so much better than the efforts from Triumph. Especially if you are road rider.
Triumphs all top end takes the fun out of road riding good on a track though
Agreed. Had a 2021 Triple. Test road the new one. Triumph was just boring me, couldn't put finger on it. Rode a 2023 XSR, bingo. Changed and never looked back. Engine and fun factor is superior for me
Great to see Yamaha improve the MT09 over my 2020 one. The front head shake on powering out of curves was unnerving.
Might go down a tooth on the front sprocket next service
i got my 2 months ago ... i still cant belive what a great bike this is! the package and price you cant miss it!
Got one recently. Exciting fun bike.
Only complaint i have is on 1st gear deceleration over run. Closed throttle , I get a sudden hit of engine brake. Anyone else notice this ?
I can’t wait for these to come in. I just put my deposit down on Friday!!
I will take delivery of the SP in two days 🤘🏻can’t wait and I’m like a child at Christmas 😂 but that bike looks so sexy!😍and it has all the power I will ever need 😛in country police is at every corner and bush they can hide in 👎🏻
Btw I did order it with comfort seat👌🏻
Couldn’t agree more, I rode a 09 and a ‘10 back to back when looking to change from my 2016 mt09. And I had way more fun throwing the 9 around. I just wish it came with the front master cylinder off the xsr
Yeah odd why the XSR get the Brembo... I didn't find much difference between the brake setups though from a performance point of view
I have been meaning to get a test ride on one of these all year! It just seems like the natural bike for me! Why am I still procrastinating?!
Hope your time comes
And have you finally come to enjoy it? :))
@@Pfannkuchenkanone
Yes. I enjoy it very much! It was the right decision for me😁👌🏻
I think you need to start a leader board on what you find as good bikes to own for fun. 👍
Good idea 👍
Love it ❤ Great bike, I owned a Tracer 900 GT, which was stolen, after I went for MT 09SP. The best decision I made.
Interesting, l have a 09 SP and it's great but wondered about the Tracer as an alternative especially for touring. The 09 can do it but the triple buzz really transfers to you hands when doing long distance.
Great review. I wonder if there is a touring screen for it? Just for the odd hour on a motorway. I'm mainly on smaller roads. Must check that out.
Pyramid plastics do one 👍
@@LambChopRides Great news. Must get a test ride somewhere. Thanks much.
Was thinking these would be ideal for casual rides/commuting with 😊
Yes actually very good! Quite tight to get on though. Shoe horn needed!
Nice review & a great bike. Regardless of the subjective looks (I don't like them personally but not a deal breaker) it's one of the best value bikes & most bang for your buck on the market imo.
The review I’ve been waiting for !! 🙏
I test rode the basic MT09, but couldn't get passed the head light, so ended up with the XSR900 instead 😊
RS or SP09, or S1000R ( 2nd gen ) with the 24SP in mind, thoughs please??
Good question I like all and bought the s1000r gen2
@@512460 me too, I had a MT09 and loved the punch from the engine and the upright ( supermoto position ), when I sat on my S1R I fell in love with the riding position, and the punch. I cam seldom use the top end rush, so starting to think about the 09SP ( 24 ), especially as it has the kit it comes with, I think I’m ruling out the RS now
@@raymolaverda3432 my only issue is with the stock rear sets on the s1kr. My foot hits the exhaust when using the correct foot position (toes on the rear set) I'm using stock akro exhaust
Told you you’d like it 😂 only downsides I have are slightly wooden brakes but more than enough really and a poor turning circle
As for the fuel gauge you just reset trip 2 when you fill up then fill up again around 100-130 miles
Or wait until it flashes then you have 15-20 miles left
For making quick progress on British roads there’s not much better
Just traded a 2021 Yamaha Mt09 SP in for a 2023 KTM super duke r EVO love the KTM the Yamaha didn't feel as secure. But for the price you get a lot. KTM is the next level. I was just never satisfied with the Yamaha. I owned a Gen 1 and Gen 2 1290 duke so maybe im used to that power. The over all fit finish its hard to beat European motorcycles.
Just bought one!.
i owned one of these as well 😂😂😂 only had it for a year. chopped it in for the MT10
I can tell you enjoyed that buddy, seems a real fun bike
Absolutely amazing :-)
Dear sir. If you use the "fuel consumption" in the menu. You can ride 13.5 liters out. It's that accurate.
Great review as usual, thanks Chopsy
What would be a better bang for buck ? The mt09sp or the striple rs ?
I can't decide i'd use it as a commute when the weather is alright but also alot of fun rides in the weekends and after work
Hello mate, you have nailed it on the head. Biking should be fun, engaging, fun factor etc ... that's why I choose to ride a ktm 990 Superduke ... 2007 + 2011 R
Health & happiness geezer Stinky Pete
nice review as always Chopsy , well done !! this looks to be a much more fun bike than the mt10.
Yes probably would Andrew 👍
Best bike for the buck. Pound for pound king
I see forthcoming 2024 model launch reviews starting to appear.....newer bike seems superb.
Did you get an invite to Lanzarote launch ?
Good to see this review on roads I ride.
Thanks
Yeah looks good doesn't it! No unfortunately no invitation for me, but hopefully on the XSR GP launch 🤞
Indeed yes.. Cheers John take care 👍
I had one brand new beginning of March and it got stolen start of June (Thats Birmingham for you) great fun bike while i had it,Fun to commute on and a great weekend ripper. I think the new GS1300 is tickling my fancy for next year though, I look forward for you to get your hands on one Chopsy.
All the best 👍🏼
I had the same in London. Couldn't have a nice bike anymore.
So this or the standard Ducati Monster? Similar price (in Denmark at least).
Bit of you Chopsy !!..... bit of me too I reckon ! Makes a lot of sense 👍
2014 was when the MK1 came out. I used to really want one despite the suspension. This model is obviously a big advancement. I prefer the new XSR900. Nick J
You have compared the Duke 890R with the Street Triple and the Duke came out on top. Between the MT-09 SP and the Duke 890R, you going to do a comparison?
Does it prone to wobble especially during high speed sweep?
MT09 SP all day long over the Hornet, different level of motorcycle. Get the SP hands down 👍
Never judge a book by its cover , great bike . Unfortunately I just don’t like how it looks . In this class and price range so much choice, a test ride is probably the best thing to do . Great video Chops .
I'm not a big fan of the MT-09 styling either, but the XSR900 isn't a bad looking machine IMO.
