You're absolutely correct and I personally hate it... the display is better than gen 3 and that's about it... tank is too wide, seat is worse, if I wanted a more sporty riding position I would have kept my Aprilia RSVR...
Why do bike reviews need to be earnest, stodgy or boring… they bloody don’t 😀 You did it again Tim, clearly this is a must try bike, they sorted everything and then some. I still want a Street Triple but I will try the MT.
Great sound and beautiful video! What a wonderful day there, wherever you were! Looks almost animated, those puffy clouds and gorgeous blue skies! Nice job man. I like the bike, through a leg over it the other day. You have a great sense of humor as well. Can you tell I enjoyed your footage? Thanks for sharing in the way you do!
Great review. Funny and very informative. I ride a Street Triple R. Absolutely love it……….but…….I’m so tempted to get the SP. I’ve liked the MT for a while now. I tested the 2021, and liked it. Gonna have to pop on to my local Yamaha dealer and have a look i think.
First time I’ve seen your reviews. Absolutely loved it. Some terrible jokes and some that actually made me laugh out loud but more important really informative about the bike . I will definitely be watching more reviews. Great job
Great video. I live in Japan. You asked, "I've fallen off the back, how did that happen?" In Japanese is, "Ushiro kara ochichata, dou yatte kou nattano kana?" I fight with my Japanese wife in Japanese for 30 years! Going to get a MT-09 and my son is going to get a MT-07. The MT-09 is half the price here in Japan than in the UK.
I love Tim’s jokey dicking about approach without the macho sexism of the 44 teeth boys. Love Yamaha’s had lots but couldn’t have one of these over an STR which are gorgeous & have lots of beautiful detail. They just feel special
To be fair, having met the 44T boys, you DO know that it is all in self-deprecating jest, even if it might not always come across that way!! Don't take them that seriously! :)
Just finished test riding the MT09 and ordered the SP for good measure. The review is exactly what I felt, riding the bike. Indicators take 15 min to get adjusted to. The video does not transport the sound from the intake at all. You're doing 50 in 2nd and you think, coming from more powerful bikes, you're doing 85. Best bike for the street with a linear and fun torque curve. Engine is a blast and in this bike is exactly what you can use legally. Did not feel underpowered. My current bike has 190 bhp... What I didn't like: howling 6th gear, engaging 1st gear from neutral is loud and kinda violent. Clutch engagement is not THAT pecise. Suspension is average, as to be expected. Other than that: Totally recommend that bike. My current bike is a 2022 Hayabusa.
So glad I found you. I've been deciding between getting this bike, a 2024 Hayabusa, or a 2025 ninja 1100sx. I live in Jacksonville FL so not really any elevation changes to speak of and no twisties either. I ride city, highway and country roads that are mostly straight with slow turns. I also drive like an absolute hooligan. I'm worried the MT09 might lack on the highway when I'm racing around with other bikes and cars and the wind protection for the winter but maybe I could just buy warmer gear. Both of those are reasons I'm leaning towards the Busa and Ninja. But then again maybe an after market windscreen would solve the wind problem. Any thoughts or advice?
Tim, I had about an hour test ride yesterday on this same bike in this colour scheme (which is the one I would choose for myself ! ;) :) :D ). I agree with most of what you said, love this bike, love the power delivery, love the sound, love the agile handing. Didn't love the fairy hard seat, which also to me felt a bit too canted forward for my liking. This is an awesome bike, but getting back on my MT10 (with sorted, modified rear shock (and forks lowered in the yokes)), felt very different, but overall, I think is the bike I would choose (though obvs, I'm not impartial). I absolutely loved the MT09 and think it's great for a couple of hours, but wouldn't want to tour on one of even go out for the whole day on one!! It's an amazing bike, super fun and would buy one, if it wasn't for the existence of the MT10 (even though, yes, it makes the MT10 feel a bit ponderous in the handling (which I've helped fix with my suspension mods)). "My" MT10 soaks up the bumps far better, steers nearly as well, has better traction on poor surfaces and can be ridden hard, ALL DAY!! (and that top end is to die for, where the 09 fades away). For the price the MT09 is fantastic, but I have doubts as per above (my mate has the 2023 SP model, loves it and HAS toured on it and agrees that he ends the day in pain, but mostly without regrets... ;) :) :D . Keep up the good work, more bike reviews should be like this!!! :D
Great review Tim, thanks. I think this is top of my list to replace my Speed Twin 1200 which, whilst a good bike, just isn’t giving me the fun I crave…. Sounds like it will be ideal for me - mostly B/A roads around me, but with the ability to tour around France a couple of times a year. Oh, and btw, 背中から落ちたんだけど、どうしてそうなったの?
Great review just ordered one. Get it in a few days. Was planning on the SP but with delays in UK hitting September I couldn’t be bothered waiting. Suspension wise it’s definitely fine if you’re not on the heavier side, I opted for the comfort seat because why not. I also opted for the cyan, I’ll be honest my plan was going for the stealthy black model but damn in person that cyan looks amazing and with the new grey it goes way better than Gen 3
The gen4 SP to succeed my brilliant (optimized and very fast) 2020 SP. Looking forward again to many modification projects coming (weight down, power up / optimised fuelling / get rid of the stock limitations, lose the stock exhaust, tail and battery, upgrade to braided steel bake lines, ...) 😎✌💥🏁
Great Video, Tim. I'm trying to decide between one of these and the Monster 937 you reviewed a while back. I want a bike that will be light, handle well, will enable me to confidently overtake and have a compliant ride, any pointers between the two would be great. I'm not a mad hooligan rider though do like to make progress and, many thanks Guy
Very detailed review. Awesome bike. I was gonna go for one, but KTM has an amazing deal on their new, but 2023, DUKE 890r. Im still waiting for delivery.
Mt10 v mt09- I’m wanting to upgrade to one of these. I ve test rode both and I love the speed of the 10 but coming off a super moto I’ve still got that hooligan mindset. I occasionally have pillions for leisurely rides. The price point is a big one for me and side I’m interested in the SP models I’d be looking at older mt10Sp whereas, I could probably stretch to get the 2024 09 SP. I like the idea of having the big grown up bike and wouldn’t want to regret getting the 09. It’s a tough descision!
Hi! I have a question. Between this MT09 2024 & the current XSR900 (not the GP), which one has more aggressive ergonomic riding position? Or which is more relaxed? Up right position or more relaxed position is very important to know for me. Thank you.
The MJ reference makes me think of his cover of Yellow Magic Orchestra's Behind the Mask. It's worth checking out the video. More a case of what do you love? So 0% on the Duke 990 over 2 years and free Tech Pack or one of these? 4 years warranty on the Duke 990?
It's obviously a great bike sounds nice to , but I just don't like the looks , I looked at the mt10 to replace my aprilla tuono factory and just thought I know it's going to be great but it's just the looks I just can't do it , so I'll keep my old aprilla ❤
Have you ridden the MT10? I had a mate in love with his 2019 v4 Factory also, who eventually succumbed to the far comfier (and therefore, better for long touring) MT10... took him a couple of years to rule his head over his heart though...!! ;) :D (AND, he STILL talks about getting another Tuono...in addition to his MT10... his Tuono damn near crippled him (twice) on euro tours two years in succession... ;) )
@@mattmutane5502hi mate I've fitted bar raisers on mine so much better for me now ive just done the picos for 10 days and its bearable just 😉 maybe I'll demo the mt10 but probably will never sell the factory it just keeps me in my happy place 😍
@@neilbenton1152 Have you sat on the 2024 MT09 model? (the previous model was more upright). The bars (for me) are fine, it's just the seat being quite hard and canted forward that I wouldn't be able to put up with on long days. The MT10 with the comfort seat has been fine for many 10+ hour days with no issues... :)
My only dislike is its ergonomics are still more dirtbike/supermoto like, still very upright compared to its competitors. The Z900 and Street Triple have a more tucked riding position, which I prefer for aggressive riding… Z900 lacks the tech, but for me that’s not a deal breaker.
Well, I did buy a GS XD. But I am still interested in this bike. Not this year, and probably not next year. But in two years, as a nice second fun bike. I kind of see myself there to be honest. Or if the whole GS experience should not go as planned for some reason, the Tracer still exist. Or I could probably get a T7 and a MT09 for less than a GS right? Decissions, decissions XD. But for the moment I will enjoy my GS 😀
Tim Would you choose mt09 or the ducati monster ? The price of new Mt 09 you can have second hand Ducati that would have lost the first initial depreciation
i love this bike i love Yamaha and... this bike (like so many other Yamahas) would be FAR BETTER..... when Yamaha finally understands HEADLIGHTS ARE IMPORTANT this "form over function" decade-plus-long design flaw has gone on long enough these bikes CANNOT BE SEEN during the day by oncoming traffic have USELESS HEADLIGHTS when ridden at night IRRESPONSIBLE... no other word .... but, YOU TIM, and this channel... Very nice likely all the bike you’d ever need albeit with 🤮 coloured wheels which are a deal breaker for me. Thanks Tim Rodie AKA the ultimate air brake…….😊
@@wl660 Honestly... don't have a screen on my current bike. 😂 My point was, is the screen REALLY that important compared to how the bike makes you feel when riding? Do you also like riding BMW and Ducati better than Yamaha? Or is it just... the screen?
I test rode one a week ago and I agree with your comments, but the one I took out had, had it's suspension setup and it made a huge difference to the bike, but I'd have the SP, I'd even replace my 23 mt10 with one, fooking fantastic fun bike 👌👌 getting the suspension setup correctly for your weight makes a massive difference to the riding enjoyment of any bike.... get your mt10sp setup Tim and then you can stop moaning about how the suspension feels meh
@@timrodieridesno but you did mention about the 09, my point is, the amount of people who don't bother to get this done and then moan about how their bike doesn't handle that well, these bikes (Japanese) are setup by a 7 stone (if you're lucky) Japanese factory technician for his weight, there's a reason these bikes come with fully adjustable suspension....🤷
The owners manual for it shows the same gear ratios as the gen3. You would think someone would actually pick that up rather than just requote yamaha's marketing.
I could never get on with the riding position with these, the Street Triple feels so much more purposeful when you're on it. Sounds like the new one is a lot better.
@@timrodierides Thank you very much for the quick response. I already test rode the new MT-09 but it did not feel that different from my "old" MT-09 SP. And the MT-10 seems to me to be too much for the german roads. The same goes for all the other hyper naked bikes. I thought the Ducati Streetfighter v2 could be a step up from the MT-09 😬 Nevertheless I will test ride it.
On a serious mountain pass, the Duc V2 does sees no land vs my (optimized) MT09 SP with 117,2 whp and weighing in at 181,5 kgs wet - also worth mentioning: My weight with full leathers etc. not 100 but 76 kgs 😁🔥🏁
I have a z900, a quickshifter would be an excellent option. I looked at the mt09, but at the time I got a better deal on the Kwak. Both bikes are great. Although the z900 seems to be getting left behind a little now.
Christ, me coming from a bike that weighs 330kg wet, any bike is a middleweight 😂 test rode one of these last week and I couldn’t believe how light it was!
One day Yamaha will wake up and realize most of its potential customers are not youngsters now and don’t want power ranger colors that went out of fashion decades ago.
I'm 45. I love the cyan wheels. Just down to personal preference really. There's also the black and the blue versions. It's not like it's the only colour
Speak for yourself! ;) I'm 52 and don't at all identify with the idea that at my age, I need to have something dull and understated... I would choose the grey and cyan model (which in fact is the colour scheme of the new MT09 I test rode yesterday!!) (and that is even after I chose the all blue colour scheme for my MT10). I'd go for a full-orange KTM too, or a Burnt Orange Focus ST or a Yellow SEAT Cupra (which is in fact what I did... ;) (though technically, that was the wife's car... but..))
Taking your comment about the looks a step farther…..if Yamaha would do a collaboration and paint it up in Iron Man colors……🤪….. ok, so it’s off to the local paint shop 😆! 背中から落ちてしまい、お尻が痛いです!😱 Senaka kara ochite shimai, oshirigaitaidesu! 😱
I wish I could appreciate Yamaha's aesthetic, because on paper, they make maybe the perfect bike for me - but it's so hideously ugly, that I'm not even considering it for my next bike. I hate the headlight on this bike, the day glo teal rims look cheap and tacky to me (kudos on finding a matching t shirt, btw!), and unfortunately, yes, I'm that shallow. It especially sucks because there's a Yamaha dealer literally a 5 minute walk away from my house. I'm glad they exist, though, because they push the other manufacturers to do better!
@timrodierides Americans increasingly need everything spelt out to them I find. Good review as always Tim, though prefer the Tracer or GP for looks. That old adage of a cockroach swatted with a flipflop keeps calling to mind these days. Fashion eh?
So you like it, then. Still pig ugly…and that’s objective fact, let’s be honest. And the pillion seat is next to useless and no decent front mudguard. Those things said, what a bike. For the mullah I reckon it just about trumps the Street Triple on riding dynamics and usability. The electronics suite is better, too. Then there’s the sound, build quality (assuming Yamaha still make this in Japan) and some nice design touches. As you say, better bike than the MT-10, and a host of other naked out there. Would I buy one? If I could change the boat race and lose the heinously ugly exhaust, then a deffo’ yes. But I can’t; so I won’t.
I find people either love the look or hate it. That means Yamaha have done an excellent job. I personally love it.
You're absolutely correct and I personally hate it... the display is better than gen 3 and that's about it... tank is too wide, seat is worse, if I wanted a more sporty riding position I would have kept my Aprilia RSVR...

I think it is absolutely perfect, best looking naked in my opinión, maybe after the CB650R.

It looks better in person. I went to a dealer to buy a z900 because it looked better than the mt-09 and I saw both and I own an mt-09 now

You need to ride one - it's FANTASTIC (mostly! ;) :D )
Looks like a 3 inch screen on a 5 inch panel.
TFT screen is tiny, with a massive black border. Why? Got to give it to BMW and Ducati - screen leave everyone else way behind.
Do you ride for the screen? Or how the bike makes you feel?
@@ClarinetCat_08080 You don’t use your screen? Ok…
@@wl660 Honestly... don't have a screen on my current bike. 😂 My point was, is the screen REALLY that important compared to how the bike makes you feel when riding? Do you also like riding BMW and Ducati better than Yamaha? Or is it just... the screen?
There's a reason they cost way more.
do you have to subscribe/pay garmin to use the sat nav?
It's free
Did you intentionally match your shirt to the wheels?
I can do many things adequately but fashion isn’t one of them
I test rode one a week ago and I agree with your comments, but the one I took out had, had it's suspension setup and it made a huge difference to the bike, but I'd have the SP, I'd even replace my 23 mt10 with one, fooking fantastic fun bike 👌👌 getting the suspension setup correctly for your weight makes a massive difference to the riding enjoyment of any bike.... get your mt10sp setup Tim and then you can stop moaning about how the suspension feels meh
Did I say the suspension feels meh on my MT10?!
The gear ratios are the same, it’s the number of dog teeth that have changed…
Steel gas tank. I'm able to stick my magnetic Nelson rigg to my 24 mt09
Think he said alloy..
Maybe it’s just creased but the seat looks like it has a small rip at the 1:39 mark. If it’s creased then that’s a pretty sloppy job by Yamaha.
So Mt10 or Mt09?
I could never get on with the riding position with these, the Street Triple feels so much more purposeful when you're on it. Sounds like the new one is a lot better.
Nice review. Or get the tracer 9GT+ :)
If you love touring then yes.
Hey Tim,
What is more fun? This or the Ducati Streetfighter v2? I own a Yamaha MT-09 SP and think about an upgrade.
Greetings from Germany
The MT09 is more fun on the road for me. I love the SFV2, but you have to rev it more and it isn’t as much of a hooligan!
"does sees no land"
What does that mean???
Hate the looks and colours.
Triumph should take note, electronics and dashboard layout is much better on the new MT09.
I have a z900, a quickshifter would be an excellent option. I looked at the mt09, but at the time I got a better deal on the Kwak. Both bikes are great. Although the z900 seems to be getting left behind a little now.
What is your height in cm please ?
190cm
193kg? What’s middleweight about that? My Speed Triple 1200 is 196kg wet.
It's under a liter... that's considered a middle weight now.
Christ, me coming from a bike that weighs 330kg wet, any bike is a middleweight 😂 test rode one of these last week and I couldn’t believe how light it was!
It's marmite on the looks. That's exactly why I ended up with the XSR900.
In before the anti Yamaha headlight club shows up in the comments
😂 give it an hour

I'd go for a full-orange KTM too, or a Burnt Orange Focus ST or a Yellow SEAT Cupra (which is in fact what I did... ;) (though technically, that was the wife's car... but..))
@mattmutane5502 Yep. I totally agree. Nothing wrong with a splash of vibrant colour in your life!
Just because you've become dull doesn't mean everyone else has.
There’s always the black one…
Taking your comment about the looks a step farther…..if Yamaha would do a collaboration and paint it up in Iron Man colors……🤪….. ok, so it’s off to the local paint shop 😆!

Aluminum, not ium
Oh dear, you’re new here aren’t you darling

@@AuxesisHyperbole666 I genuinely thought the world didn't need this explaining to them, but clearly it does. Thank you for doing so!
@timrodierides Americans increasingly need everything spelt out to them I find. Good review as always Tim, though prefer the Tracer or GP for looks. That old adage of a cockroach swatted with a flipflop keeps calling to mind these days. Fashion eh?
KTM 990 Duke >>>
Nah. I like the idea of one of these but I don’t have the self control. I know I would push too hard in the bends and kill myself dead.
Haha well how have you survived this far with that little self control?
