The Halo universe is no stranger to character deaths - with over death count more than likely in the trillions, it tends to happen quite a lot! So, today I thought we'd count down the 7 best character deaths in all of Halo, with some honourable mentions thrown in there too for good measure!

Noble Six’s final stand. Always gets me. Lad fought for days relentlessly till his death. He at least got to fight till the end.
@Kota Lz Yep yep yep - two weeks after the mission "Pillar of Autumn" in Reach is when "Lone Wolf" takes place, I believe. Six was fighting quite literally, and I do mean literally, every step of the way.

It could be possible now, however not exactly sponsored by 313. Modding in Halo infinite, will be infinite if I may say so. We will be pretty much able to do campaign levels, control AIs, and even script the game as we wish through Forge, and considering PC port, the only limit will be our imagination. Think about it like this, Halo will be the new skyrim modding wise.

Kurt's death is sheer,un-refined badassery. Going out with a bang is one thing but setting off two nukes and taking out a Covenant army while wounded and laughing is next level

Echo-419's death was also very sad in CE. I always found it interesting that she was only background character, yet her death could leave an impact on players.

Kat's death will always be a personal favourite of mine. Sure Jorge went first, but his was a noble (forgive the pun) sacrifice. Kat truly died out of the blue in a completely unexpected manner. It really gave the feeling that no spartan was safe (especially as she was one of the members of noble team you had spent the most time with)
I’m going to be honest I was happy when she died. Because her a.i got me killed so many times by driving me off a cliff or into the enemy.
That's because you reminded her of her ex-girlfriend. Got em!
It also reflects real war almost no soldiers go down in a blaze of glory most of the time they just die anti climatically and that’s just really sad but true
Everytime I see Keyes in the Reach campaign, all I can think about is Keyes being taken by the flood in ce. His death traumatized me as a kid

Worst part is --- it was done for the hell of it. The Flood already knew where Earth was due to the Precursor/Forerunner/Ancient human war. Gravemind was just playing with his food... literally.
@@Aurora-313 Actually that's wrong because the gravemind hadn't yet formed. It was a proto gravemind. Which doesnt have access to all that information. A protogravemind represents the pure instinct of the gravemind.
And I dont know if earth actually was the human home planet. There wasn't any recorded trace of a flood infestation on earth I think.
the one death that got me was Dr. Tilson in halo 4 who got composed. that gave me nightmares

Emile’s death is probably my favorite. His final words of, “I’m ready! How about you?” As he takes his attacker down with him really makes it feel epic, much more so than Kat’s death in my opinion, where she just anticlimactically gets shot in the head and dies.

Kat's death is quite a different scenario as when we see Emile die we know he faces his fears of dying in his final moments accepting death and thus asking his foe the same. With Kat on the other hand it's supposed to be a moment that bring shock into the player being that Kat was taken out so quickly in a way which showed just how dire their situatuon was. If a Spartan, one of humanities greatest supersoldiers, could be taken out so quickly and unexpectedly then what hope did humanity have in winning the war. It fits well with the loss of Reach in how some of the strongest things humanity had were taken out and overrun so easily and so quickly. Kat's death shows that on a individual level which is why I think it shouldn't be looked upon as anticlimactic but as tragically and scarily sudden art.

@@griffingower1883 Hands down.. Noble 6s death is still my top one death of all times in the Halo Universe. His death was the purest definition of a Spartans death. One man fighting against an infinite horde. There’s a reason why he is the only one titled as “Hyper Lethal” aside from John.
I think if Carter didn't give June the orders to leave, he would of been able to cover Emile's 6 while 6 coverd his 12.
Emile shouldn't have even been on the mass driver to begin with. Emile would have been way more useful helping Six clear the area. There should have been a squad of marines on the and protecting the mass driver so 6 and Emile could have lived. It makes way more sense from a strategic standpoint.

Yea but if "A Fist Full of Arrows" is canon, Halsey would just be captured by the covenant, giving the covenant a huge advantage in the war. If it wasn't for Jun protecting Halsey, the covenant would've already won the war the moment they got their hands on her.

@Melissa Waterman maybe the arbiter, i would hate it if he was killed, tho masterchief is the xbox mascot, theres no way they would kill him. Its not like nintendo would kill mario. who fecken knows tho maybe actually if steve downes was retiring they would but i feel like they'd probably just recast chief's voice actor in that scenario which would suck and at that point i'd prefer a fitting end to chief.
they will kill off chief eventually. Luck only gets you so far.
I'd argue that it would be great to see them on a list like this. As much as I don't want their deaths, but to be on a list of Best Deaths is okay in my books.

Spartan Will honestly had one of my favorite deaths in all of Halo. He went out literally punching a pair of hunters to death. He actually managed to take one down before getting blasted by the other, after which he still managed to take one last step before finally collapsing, as if his mind was still in the fight, but his body was simply no longer able.
Local man literally too angry to die.

I disagree with the assumption that Thel would've been receptive to Sesa/Guilty Spark's attempts to show him the truth. This was Thel's first mission as Arbiter for the Prophets after his disgrace in front of the council. He was overcome with shame and was eager to serve the Prophets in any way he could to redeem himself, I can't say he would've been agro and killed Sesa there, but I don't think he would've turned on the Covenant so quickly. Sesa was only able to plant the seed, Thel needed the rest of his journey to see the truth. In my opinion ofc

xperia literally said it would have added to his doubt on the covenant, not turn on them then and there. it would have just made the process faster as Retarderus would have come to snatch the oracle anyway and killed Sesa too

Something to add to Sam's death and it's effect on John. In the books (don't remember exactly which book) there is a conversation John has with his instructor about "lives spent vs lives wasted" just after the the Spartans body modification part of becoming a spartan which most of the recruits did not survive or were left physically marred and handicapped. Aside from chiefs gym incident he's always held some empathy for his fallen comrades.

Kurt (in my opinion) had the greatest most bad ass death in all of Halo.
Unpopular opinion but Kurt's death was extremely avoidable if he had put on his old Mark IV Mjolnir. Not using Mjolnir when you have the option like playing through Mass Effect 3 Insanity without ascending Garrus Vakarian to Godhood, your chances of survival instantly nose dive.

One of my favorites is Kurts death from ghosts of onyx. He took down an entire Covenant fleet and died saving what remained of his Spartan 3’s.
What got me was his vision of seeing all of the MIA Spartans give him the thumbs up, essentially giving him the motivation he needed to press the button before he could pass out. Absolutely bad ass.

I would say one of my favorite deaths in the Halo franchise is Sergeant Ghost's death from Halo Legends Prototype short film. Ghost is a sad man who lost his entire platoon on a firefight 3 years before the day his death would come. Algolis is under attack by the Covenant and Ghost was assign to destroy all data and prototypes so the Covenant couldn't get their hands on anything. Not wanting to repeat history again, he decides to take action into his own hands and saves his men and stays behind to die. But the most ironic thing about Ghost's character as a whole is how he felt as a ghost, not being able to feel the pain but when it just wasn't the case. In the end, he remembers one thing from his fallen soldier, just to be human so he would be like a ghost and feel something inside. In the end, he goes out with a bang as he was able to become human again.
Was looking to see if anyone remembered this one too. Definitely agree it's one of the most moving deaths.

Gost, those two headhunters, daisy, got me sad, gost made me a little better, the headhuntrers to out their killers, and daisy... died qiuckly... at least
And then add that moment with what happened immediately afterwards on the Heart of Midlothian, and it gets way more better.
Will's death was one of the most badass ways for an outnumbered and outmatched Spartan to go out. He tackled two Hunters off a hill, and took them on hand-to-hand, something that put all other nearby Covenant in an absolute stupor because nobody had ever dared to do so before. And even after being shot point-blank with a Fuel Rod Cannon, he still walked towards the other Hunter for a couple of steps before falling.
Will went out a champion, and one that would have doubtless inspired terror in the Covenant, had any of the witnesses lived to tell the tale of a demon who tore a lekgolo in half with his bare hands.
Absolutely one of the most hardcore Spartan-II's, I was just thinking why he wasn't added to this list even as an honorable mention.

After Arbiter kills Truth, he just roars out in anger.
So much senseless death; worlds burned, brothers silenced. The lies, the betrayal... all for the prophets benefit.
His shame, his anguish and burning rage, finally released in that carthartic moment... but it will never undo the past...
He almost sounds tired when he does it. Like the death didnt actually help him feel any better.

When presented with the actual situation, he quite quickly set about kicking all kinds of ass because thats what Thel DOES.
Im going with "he's unhappy he didnt get to kill him slowly and in front of the entire Covenant", but situations are as situations are. Least Chief got to see it.
Cortana's death in Halo 4 was the first scene in a videogame, and any firm of media for that matter, to make me cry. An utter masterpiece

I really love that Kurt-051 is featured in the thumbnail, you could easily have made this about the games but, I adore that he took risks and decided cover the rather underrated expanded material, hopefully Zuka 'Zammamee, Yayap or maybe even Pvt. Marvin Mobuto could be featured in the sequel video, though. 🌟
Here after knowing Chief made his password to delete the weapon, 034 Samuel. Shows how deleting the weapon after deleting Cortana meant sacrificing her for the mission like they did with Sam
I think sesa didn't trust in the arbiter because it didn't matter. The arbiter was the lowest social standing other then heretical. Even if arbiter switched, he has no fleet, no army, and no political power.
That and the station they were on was sort of falling towards the core of a Gas Giant...
And to top that the flood was at their door basically they had no time
but he MAY have swayed others to join such as rtas, and maybe other because of how much others used to look up to him. and the arbiter coulda lead the heretics with him then perhaps sway other elites and maybe other species to join, like a chain reaction

he was an awesome character but his death was done purely for shock factor and not to mention that him being killed by guilty spark a pathetic character just spat on Johnson's character. to be frank they shouldn't have killed of Johnson at all.

Kurt needs a spin off game. Man's one of my absolute favorite S II's and characters in total. A true legend among the Spartans and humanity who was also a good friend and mentor.
Poor Jenkins man, I remember reading the book and I felt so much dread for him. Definitely number one death in my opinion. A regular marine showed the heart any Spartan wished they can achieve

The dude who fought through the library before chief did too, I wish I could remember his name. Menendaz I think? I remember chief paused over him, grabbed his tags, and wished he knew him or something. He was well halfway through as well.
The only thing I would have changed about Reach, is I would have had Jun die in Kat's place, it would have been just as ironic to have "the sniper" be shot in the head, and I think Kat leaving with Halsey would have been more fitting as they clashed earlier in the story and she was probably the "smartest" of noble team so would have been a good match to escort Halsey 🤷

Cortana’s death in Halo 4 is one of only two gaming moments to make me cry
343 really handled it well. Halo 4 may be looked down upon by the halo community (myself included) but it’s one of the strongest and most memorable parts of the series despite happening in a less than stellar game

Kurt's death is my #1 simply because in his final moments he started hallucinating and having visions of every single Spartan 2 and 3 that had ever died coming back to support him like a huge spartan army.
Think about it; Sam, Jorge, Noble Team, Daisy, Cal, Spartan 3s Alpha and Beta company. Every single spartan that was MIA or KIA came to have his back.
And that was what motivated Kurt to stand and fight a Whole Covenant Armada.
Seeing noble team all together, remembering reach, made me cry a bit. It really hit a part in my childhood seeing so many badasses die
Personally I Think Truth’s Death is my favourite. He truly committed some vile acts in both Halo 2 and 3, and the Arbiter gave him Karma for all of that which was satisfying.

The Prophet of Truth literally tricked the entire Covenant to start a genocidal campaign against Humanity which lead to billions of human lives lost. He planned to have the entire Sangheili race extinct and he also planned to use the Ark to fire the Halo Array to kill off all life in the galaxy and repopulate it with his followers. For the latter, he was the only Prophet who knew that the Great Journey was a lie.
He did all of it because he wanted to be a god.
How was his actions not heinous ?
Emile from Halo Reach went down like a true soldier. Best death in the saga for me personally

Jenkins was a rough one to read, especially after Contact Harvest. Unsure if the same marine, but damn, he went from farm boy to a damn good soldier
another bit of irony from reach’s deaths is that jorge the heavy demolition guy died in an explosion
Sharing her name, Kat's death always struck a certain chord. I was just young enough to get emotionally attached to all the members of Noble Team in way that made that whole game a very special memory for me, and it's without a doubt some of the best storytelling I've seen to date.
Don’t make me go through the pain of Noble 6’s and Johnson’s death again Xperia. I can’t do it anymore.
William - 043 is the best one to me. The absolute unit literally tore a hunter apart with his bare hands on Onyx before taking a hunter blast straight to the chest, and still taking a few steps forwards before falling

It always bums me that we dont get to play Rookie more than odst. He was my favorite character in the entire halo storyline. Rookie was cool because he is no super soldier nor just a marine, he is a odst with one of the coolest squads I've ever seen. It's a real shame that a rebel shot him out of fear. That last look at buck in that helmet before being shot. R.I.P Rookie, you'll be one of the most important characters, along with Sergeant Johnson, I'll remember.
In all fairness, by the end of the Forerunner v Flood war, there were mere handfuls left of the forerunner population, and with Mendicant Bias’s betrayal, they were left crippled and defenseless, outside of the suicide option of the halo rings. Which I hope they start revealing the BIG rings, cuz I don’t remember them being confirmed destroyed. Unlike their smaller counterparts we all know and love, lol
If I recall correctly the greater Rings where all destroyed bar one instillation zero 7 / zeta halo which was given refinements and brought in line with the smaller halos including a size reduction due to damage

I am 25 years old and I had tears rolling down my face like I lost a family member when Cortana’s Echo recording played in the end of infinite. It was the single most emotional moment I’ve ever had with a video game. It was like as I was watching that scene, my whole childhood with Halo replayed. From back on the OG x box playing CE and 2 with my stepfather. From the split screen play throughs with my childhood friends on halo 3, playing multiplayer for countless hours or just screwing around in custom matches. To putting down my controller mid game in halo 4 when my mother and stepfather announced their divorce to me. To halo 5 when I may or may not have taken Multiplayer a little too seriously because I was so dang good at it but I hated the multiplayer so damn much. Don’t even get me started on the campaign… To me watching the Cortana echo scene after my first complete play through. Where I sat in my room in my apartment. From an innocent child to a responsible adult, I have always had Halo. Many won’t understand how much that can mean to someone.
Daisy from halo legends homecoming is the one that stood out to me the most thanks to the short showing her backstory of her childhood and and her abduction and life in the Spartan 2 program and escape from the profram facility with her friends and her discovery of her flash clone and showing her death after we seen her life story
How about the group of Marines from Halo CE they were holding off the Covenant so the chief could find the map room
with Cortana solemnly replying to them after they say they can't make it inside and instead they'll hold off the Covenant forces for as long as they could "Give them hell marines."

Reach will always live in my heart, my first ever halo game and the game my siblings and I had so many memories with. When we were just kids and the only thing we had to worry about was the scary elite with a energy sword.
Spartan Theodore's death is now one of the best ones, Rest In Peace you screwdriver wielding badass.
I would’ve included Vice Admiral Whitcomb from First Strike as an honorable mention. He went out like a badass and he basically saved Earth.

I really kinda had hoped Chyler Silva would be on the list. Her death wasn't the most sacrificial or flashy, but it was so important in turning Lasky into the leader he became... Forward Unto Dawn always has had a special place in my heart.

Here's a tip. When dealing with the flood in hale CE, shoot the infection form lodged in both combat and carrier forms chest, with a pistol or sniper. I gives the same effect as a headshot for the covenent.

I'd love to see a 'what if' scenario where the Heretic leader held off on firing at the Arbiter and allowed Spark to illuminate him on the whole 'Great Journey' thing. As you rightly pointed out, the Arbiter was interested, he was listening to Spark and probably would've accepted the truth. After all, when Penitent Tangent explained that the Halos were weapons of mass destruction which is corroborated by the Gravemind? Arbi's pretty quick to change his tune. Especially when Spark again confirms Halo's purpose.
