I have a sony a7III and I started with the 85mm f1.8 and it's amazing, every shot is great, then I got the 16-35 Gmaster f2.8 and it's definitely a great lens but it is heavy and big and when traveling it's not so great to carry around, so... I just bought the 35mm f1.8 and couldn't be happier, it's sharp and perfect for travel, I only take the 35mm and the 85mm f1.8 with me now. I'm selling the 16-35mm because, in time, I found out I don't really use it that much for the kind of photos I take, so I'll be selling it soon. Greetings from Chile. Love your channel!

Just got my A7RIV a few days ago, and lucked out and picked up a 16-35mm f/2.8 GM used for a hefty discount. In a word, incredible. This thing is going to spoil me so hard. My go-to hiking camera is my A6600, and I interchange between either the 18-135mm or some combination of the Sony Trio (10-18mm f/4, 16-55 f/2.8, and the 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3). Being able to go from 16mm on up to 35, and then with a single button press swap it into 24-53mm and still maintain 26mp is just glorious. Biggest downside? Thing is freaking huge. Roughly on the same scale as my 70-350mm APS-C lens. Total weight of the camera plus the lens combined is over 3lbs. But it's so good. For longer trips where weight matters the APS-C will still be my workhorse, but shorter trips? A7RIV is nuts. Oh also picked up the 85mm f/1.8. It's a good lens, though I don't do much portrait work and find it hard to use for street and landscapes. Still, just and excuse to get creative.

Yes Jason, love you, but you blew it here by missing all the great Sigma DG DN lens which outperform even some GM lenses at less costs. See my comment and link above
The "DN" ART versions in Sigma (14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, 85mm f/1.4, 105mm f/2.8 macro, 100-400mm f/5-6.3) are the sharpest, optically accurate lenses out there. And these perform similar and in some cases even better than the G master lenses. Not to mention the HSM ART lenses after constant updates. And how can someone not mention the world's first 35mm f/1.2 lens?
I was leaning towards Canon for my first mirrorless full frame purchase primarily due to the many disappointments I heard from people about the grip. But I also know several pro photographers with larger hands than mine who use it quite comfortably. This and the fact that both Tamron and Sigma have very affordable lenses in the focal lengths where I wont fret over owning a native, convinces me to buy a Sony instead. When my options under the 3k budget is either the Canon RP with 24-70 f2.8 native or the Sony alpha 7 iii with tamron 28-75 f2.8 or Sigma 24-70 f2.8 or Zeiss Batis 85 f1.8 or … …we get the obvious hint!
Thanks Jason, this really helped me decide what lenses to get for my new A7iii. So stoked to upgrade from my Nikon D7100. I chose the 20mm 1.8, 50mm Zeis 1.8mm, and 24-105mm F4. Next is to decide on a wildlife/zoom lens, for our sailing trip to Alaska/Mexico, and probably an 85mm eventually.
man, i appreciate your work so much! one of the few reviewers that keep it real to the subject and doesnt waste time on providing us such good information in such an efficient and organised way. its always a pleasure to watch your reviews
Jason love you, but you knew this was coming buddy. You totally ignore the amazing new Sigma lenses in E-mount that have been tested and outperform Sony GM lenses at less cost. The Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN has overall bested the nearly five year old 24-70mm f2.8 GM in all tests for less money. I could afford to buy this GM but choose the better Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN. The Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 DG DN bests the old 85mm f1.4 GM in all head-to head tests and is the best 85mm on the market for Sony. I sold my 85mm GM and it fully paid for the better Sigma. You favor the Batis lenses like the 135mm f2.8 over the 135mm f1.8 GM. Come on Jason, that 135mm f1.8 GM blows away the Batis and is the sharpest lens ever tested by Lens Rentals. Yes I know you have a Batis lens addiction. The Sony 100-400mm is NOT the sharpest Sony lens. And you ignore the Sigma 100-400mm. Also the new Sigma Art 105mm f2,8 Macro is sharper than the Sony 90mm f2.8 Macro at less costs also. No reviewer will get it always right, all the time. Usually I am right there with you on most things, but you are missing a lot here. Check out the tests of 114 Fullframe E-mount lens, tested for sharpness by SAB. Yes there are more things to picking a lens than just sharpness, like color, contrast, bokeh, focus, weight, size, price, build quality. But this list is a good comparison. BTW I am an award-winning pro of over 44 years in the business who has owned and used the best cameras and dozens of lenses from Leica, Nikon, Canon and Sony. I have owned the Sony A7RII, A7RIII, A7III and now own the A9, A7RIV and A7SIII. I own 13 E-mount lenses from Sony, Sigma, and Tamron. I choose the best lenses that I need, and sometimes that is not a Sony lens. I own five GM lenses now, but not all GM lenses are created equal. Cheers, still love you man. Agree with everything you say about the Batis 135mm and the Sony Zeiss 55mm. My favourite 35mm is the Loxia. It's very compact and has amazing IQ across the frame.
My interpretation of sony full frames is - quality in a compact body and reasonable prices. My choices are: Ultrawide zoom_tamron 17-28 2.8 (light, fast, unexpensive) Normal zoom/travel lens_sony 24105G (most compact 24105, even lighter and less expensive than 2470 GM) Tele zoom_sigma 100-400 (most compact 100-400 on the market, light and with great optics) Speaking about prime lenses: 35 - zeiss 2.8 (incredible pancake lens) 50 - sony 1.8 (excellent optics, cheapest FE lens.... even if terrible autofocus) 85 - sony 1.8 (no words to add)
I've been researching a lot on the lenses but was very confused to find the exact lenses for my camera. Bro this video is going to help me a lot to choose the best lenses for my Sony A7M4. Thank to you.

I'm just a novice that enjoys getting great shots (once and a while) and I have a long way to go. Sites such as this are a lifesaver in helping me avoid costly and timely mistakes. Thanks!
Where was the Zeiss Batis 40mm? I’m considering this as my mid-prime for the close focus ability
Was considering the same for a mid prime with close strength. I wonder if it's fallen out of favor
@@brentkimball8866 it is the most recent lens of the Batis line, but there has been so many other options since, including the favoured Sony 35mm 1.8. I just got the Tamron 70-180 yesterday instead of a macro lens. At 70mm you can get insanely close to a subject. Like, the lens is almost touching it. That’s another consideration if you want close focus
bro, I really enjoy this video, it was VERY helpful because I just bought the Sony a7c. After being a Canon user pretty much my whole life I needed to know which lenses to buy in order to fulfill my needs for video and photography. thank you so much!
What happened to all the Sigma "DN" collection bro?
Appreciate the feedback! I'm updating the slides now to include them! I've only used their newest 24-70mm and haven't gotten a chance to review their latest releases yet! My 2022 video will include them for sure! For now, check out my Sigma 24-70mm review separately! :) ua-cam.com/video/q84vrtCbm5g/v-deo.html
Yes Jason, love you, but you blew it here by missing all the great Sigma DG DN lens which outperform even some GM lenses at less costs. See my comment and link above
@@6gwilliams You have a point. My new sigma 85mm DN easly outperforms 85 GM in every way
@@umitpalalondon brooooo !!!
This guy was born to cover sony... Well that's good.. I am new to sony.. And he shows up.
What about the sigma 24-70 f 2.8 art im extremely happy with mine
Great video! , do the apsc model too please 🙏🏻
I learned so much about lenses and photography just by watching this video. Thanks!
As helpful as this video is, it still feels incomplete without any mention of Sigma or Samyang's newer lenses. Till next year
yeah really missing out on some fantastic budget lenses
Thanks Jason, this really helped me decide what lenses to get for my new A7iii. So stoked to upgrade from my Nikon D7100. I chose the 20mm 1.8, 50mm Zeis 1.8mm, and 24-105mm F4. Next is to decide on a wildlife/zoom lens, for our sailing trip to Alaska/Mexico, and probably an 85mm eventually.
Thanks for the tips
This was so helpful. I've been looking for a video like this ever since the A7C reveal, I've decided on the tamron 28-75. IN TAMRON WE TRUST!
Editorializing by omission without Samyang or Sigma being represented.
man, i appreciate your work so much! one of the few reviewers that keep it real to the subject and doesnt waste time on providing us such good information in such an efficient and organised way. its always a pleasure to watch your reviews
Thank you!
Long time Fuji user switching over to Sony and this video is immensely helpful thank you so much for a great content.
Thank you for your lens opinions here Gerald. Not to mention the incredible link you shared. Amazing in depth test! Never seen so many lenses tested and documented 🤯
@@gavinmaloney6773 you are most welcome
I have the Sigma 16mm f/1.4, Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 and the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 to go with my Sony A7C. I am a happy man.
This was great! Can you do one for Canon full frame? 🤩🤩🤩
Please
I think Jason reviews only Sony systems.
You need for find someone that uses a Canon system. Why would someone with a Sony camera buy Canon lenses? Doesn't make sense
This movie is a must view for every Sony Photographer. Most informative, I thoroughly enjoyed !
What's the point of a "best lenses" review that ignores many of the most popular and best performing lenses available for e-mount?
Many it’s just too many of them , so he pick his favorite personally .
@@KTtv1991 Should be called the "2021 Sony overpriced and sometimes underperforming lens buying guide" then. Sony makes some great lenses but quite a few of them are matched or beaten by Sigma or Tamron lenses costing less than half as much.
Thanks! I took a chance on a Sony A7S3 (mid-life crisis career change lol) and your videos helped me pick the lenses. I've got the Sony 35mm and 85mm f1.8, and also thanks to Vu Nguyen I got the Sigma 14-24mm DG DN (deez nuts). Phenomenal combination and amazing results.
Instead of begging for likes every 5 minutes, you should have included Sigma lenses here mate.
This is my go-to video for choosing which lens to add to my collection.
genuinely you deserve all the likes and subs based off of this one video alone :p
Just picked up my 16-35mm GM, and OMG I love this lens... been watching a lot of your videos to get the ideas of what lens would fit me. Thank you so much for all the recommendations and the photographer tips videos.
extremely helpful! I love your light-hearted yet no-nonsense style that's clearly grounded in a lot of experience
when you were showing the 16-35mm you showed pictures of Mt.Lassen which is right where i live!
Thank you, this made picking my next lenses so much easier!
Super helpful as I’m buying a a7R iii in 46 days... not that I’m counting! I’m picking up the Sigma 85mm DN DG and the fe 35mm 1.8.
I got my A7iii and 24 1.4 yesterday. This video is deal timing to decide what is next on the wish list :)
24GM is awesome! Good first lens ! :D
Very helpful in understanding lenses and uses.. Man you nailed it..💥
Way to come out swinging! Welcome back!
Happy to be back!
Absolutely brilliant video! Love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩
Okay, Im convinced,
As I do Product and Model shoots for brands, along with some video's.
1 Zoom (24-105mm F/4)
2 Prime (20mm F/2 & 85mm F1.8)
Thank you very much for the details and the budget options.
Thank you for this video, made me realize how much more I prefer a wide angle lens
the best lens comparison video out there. Made my choices super super clear. Thankyou Jason! Keep creating great content!!
Thanks bro. Sending this to my wife because she doesn't know what to get me for xmas :) hoping for another accessories update video too
You smashed this video! I’ve been looking for a video like this and now I know what lens to purchase for my new Sony full frame! Thank you!
Your content is insane, Jason. You'll reach a million subs in no time!
I am a new photographer shooting with my 35mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 prime lens! :)
Subscribed!
Took a couple of days but finally finished watching it. Great guide! I appreciate the extra time explaining the tiny details and your experience with the lenses
Love your content bud! Bought the sony 85mm 1.8 a few months back. Glad to see others agree! Keep it up man!
I'm in the exact same position! I was eyeing it up for ages and it was down to £400 (from £540) so I went for it and I have no regrets! It is good to see a professional agreeing and validating my choice so to speak :)
Went with the Sigma 14-24 2.8 and 24-70 2.8 for the sheer value and compared to SONY versions. Annnnd they are supper sharp! Your guides are always the base of my camera decisions and super helpful for my channel growth. Keep it Up J.Vong
Do appreciate these videos I am working to build my photography and videography and knowing what is possibly worth buying saves me time and money
Agree with everything you say about the Batis 135mm and the Sony Zeiss 55mm. My favourite 35mm is the Loxia. It's very compact and has amazing IQ across the frame.
My interpretation of sony full frames is - quality in a compact body and reasonable prices.
My choices are:
Ultrawide zoom_tamron 17-28 2.8 (light, fast, unexpensive)
Normal zoom/travel lens_sony 24105G (most compact 24105, even lighter and less expensive than 2470 GM)
Tele zoom_sigma 100-400 (most compact 100-400 on the market, light and with great optics)
Speaking about prime lenses:
35 - zeiss 2.8 (incredible pancake lens)
50 - sony 1.8 (excellent optics, cheapest FE lens.... even if terrible autofocus)
85 - sony 1.8 (no words to add)
I really believe the Tamron 28-200 and 70-300 should be in there. Great value for money zooms!
Great to see you making videos again 🙂
glad to be back!
I've been researching a lot on the lenses but was very confused to find the exact lenses for my camera. Bro this video is going to help me a lot to choose the best lenses for my Sony A7M4. Thank to you.
One of the better lens overviews I've ever seen. I wish I had this for the systems I used to be in. Nice job!
appreciate this! thank you~!
Now there's so many great new Samyang and Sigma lenses that are right in the middle of the conversation!
So much value in one video! Great work Jason🙌
Always appreciate your insights. Your videos have a good balance of information, length and even humor. I’ve learned a great deal from you over the years, thank you so much. Keep them coming.
Fantastic video. I'm on the fence with my next lens needs, so this video helped me eliminate some. Thank you Jason for your video humor and straight forward reasoning behind your choices.
Great video! So helpful, I’m weighing out options for a wide angle. Love your channel! A fan from Japan
Thanks a lot
As a beginner who wants a upgrade for professional work, i think the prime lenses are gonna be fine at first. More than good enough. The 35 50 and 85 seem like a good affordable start
Love this video man. Just getting into the photography gear frenzy now as I am planning to travel a lot next year and need some good wide-angle and telephoto lens for safaris.
Thanks for this. Was planning to go to a store for them to give me a rundown before I buy but after this, I can just order online
Been watching your videos everyday. Very good info and very entertaining
