I have an SIII in my cine rig, a 7III as the base for my med-wide lenses, and an RIII for tele and fast primes. I'm probably going to get a 7IV for my med-wide/B-cam for video, and use the 7III for a backup/timelapse/grab-n-go body.

The Mrs bought me the A7iii in December. on a really good deal. £1350 brand new. The current price in the UK for the iv is £2400.
the difference paid for my first lens. 24-105G.

Hey Jared, great review, however I feel that calling it a slight improvement on video is not true; I have owned both and the jump on quality with the 10bit files is huge. Specially considering the fact that you can use S-log 3 which makes a huge improvement on dynamic range.

    • @Aroundtheworld-ew6rx
      @Aroundtheworld-ew6rx 2 роки тому +5

Jared is right! 10 bit will always be better than 8 bit, agree but really, what serious videographer will pick the A7iv over the A7siii. If you are under the A7siii, it doesn't matter if you are A7iv, A7v or A7iii under is under. Jared is use to quality.

@@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx if you can afford the extra $1000 and treat it mainly as video camera then yes Siii is the answer.
But for true hybrid camera A7iv is much better in video than A7iii. Sure in a well lit studio like Jared has; the A7iii will works. But in most situation the color banding alone from 8bit is a deal killer. On top a7iv also have better dynamic, better color science, better auto focus, full size HDMI etc

    • @VoxeeMedia
      @VoxeeMedia 2 роки тому +5

@@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx I actually have used both. Agree on the a7siii being better in video, except on 24fps where the A7iv is more crisp and detail due the oversampling. However if you do both and only want to take one body with you and your photography game is serious the a7siii is limiting.
Oh and one fact, true that the crop on 60p is a pain, but tbh it is not a big deal for me as I can adjust framing or lens, and If I shoot 60p will be tighter anyway to be slow it down. And the ability to crop to apc/s35 and still having a high quality 4k is something I have missed on the siii.
Again, I would say that you are being very bold, and that it will or not be worth it depending on budget and use case

    • @juliusheigl1015

totally true, everyone who has worked with the 4:2:2 10 bit of the a7sIII in comparison to the 4:2:0 8 bit of the A7III knows that there is an incredibly huge result in quality. With Slog3 and S Cinetone, combined with the Alister V LUTs it is such a nice image, where the A7III is not even close at. For me that's actually the biggest reason to upgrade, because I can use the a7IV now as B Cam for my A7SIII

  • @CloudchaserSC

hey Jared, with so many options now from Sony and 3rd party manufacturers it would be awesome to have a follow up to this video with your idea of what is the right choice of "good glass" for the a7 IV. Choosing a7 IV over a1 I'd like to also not go G-Master all the way, cause this seems an overkill with my needs and skill level.

I recommend the a7IV overall. It's Sony's PERFECT hybrid camera right now and especially at $2,500. All the video features that were not in the a7iii is here in the a7IV. If you're primary just shooting photography, then the A7iii will be the best for you and at a lower price of $2,000. Eventually you will want the video autofocus, 10-bit color and S-cinetone, so keep that in mind when you're going to buy the a7iii. I've upgraded to the a7IV and I love everything about it.

It's better for photography as well as for video work...
      1. 33MP which is the sweet spot for all studio, sports, motorsports and action work, as well as not being too much for photographers in other fields.
      2. Better (WAY BETTER) Eye/Face AF tracking (and not only is it better, it's also WAY faster too.)
      3. Better (WAY BETTER) low light focus performance in terms of both accuracy and speed.
      4. Better low light/high ISO performance.
      5. Better color science (almost on par with Canon and Nikon) - meaning less time spent color correcting your images before you begin editing.
If you shoot sports, motorsports, any kind of studio work, landscapes, wildlife or events - you WILL want those 33MP and you WILL want the near-perfect AF (there's literally no real world difference in AF between the A1 and a7IV - in 40 minutes of test shooting, both the A1 and a7IV had 85/85 shots in focus aka. 100% of the shots in focus.) And I don't think I even need to mention the amazing low light performance with both high ISO settings and the autofocus.

If you want videos get the A7siii. Don't waste your money on the a7IV. If you want photography get a like new body no scratches or dents are like 1600 that's almost a thousand dollars difference. Don't get scam by business.

@@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx Not necessarily. The 2nd native ISO of the A7S3 being at 12800 is not very practical for most applications. In dark scenarios with some available light (even run&gun), 3200 or 6400 ISO is enough. And at those levels, the A7iv significantly outperforms the A7S3. A7S3 is better for people who either light their scenes and shoot at lowest native ISO, or something like documentaries. Or people who really really need the 4k120p and ProRes Raw.

@@professionalpotato4764 Agree, Lights are essential. People forget videography and photography are art. If someone is shooting at high iso to capture an extremely low light scene, I'll recommend for them to take a class in lighting before buying any camera over 1000 dollars. Shooting sports or weddings could be the exception because capturing the moment is more important than photography or videography.

The A7IV offers better support for the LA-EA5 adapter compared to the A7III, as it supports AF on A-mount screw driven lenses as well. The A7IV with LA-EA5 is a good upgrade path for people that still own a lot of A-mount stuff.

For a prosumer like myself that does little to no video, I weighed getting the A7ii vs the A7IV just recently and got the A7iii on a deal and I honestly probably still would get the A7iii no matter what. Normally when I buy a camera I have some regrets and say maybe I should have spent more and gotten a different one but this time I am just fine and quite content. After having multiple Sonys and Canons over the years I kind of come to the conclusion I really don't like the flippy screens either despite their usefulness.

I’m very happy with my A74 it’s my companion to my A7R3. My A74 is my go-to for street, sports, film and Mated usually to my 24-70 Gmaster or 200-600. My A7R3 is my Astro, portrait/studio, landscape body and mater with my 20 1.8 or 85mm.
For weddings I can use the A74 to film and R3 for stills.
The A74 enlarged grip is welcomed, new mode dials are helpful, swivel screen is better than the tilt. Full sized HDMI out is great.
My wish list for the A7R5 is the A74 body with a RAW size selection ability like the D850 had.
A major reason I didn’t upgrade from the R3 to R4 was no raw file size selection ability and being forced to shoot everything 62mp unless I shot Aps-c.

I bought the A7III today instead of A7IV for the sole reason of having the tilting display. The "variangle" one of the A7IV is absolutely unusable for concert photography where I need to be quite discrete and take the least space possible in the crowd. Also I feel like a dork opening the screen to the side.

@@ameliadellavita I don't know about the performance. I've had the A7III for two months and I have to say I don't like it very much. The AF confirmation is false around 40% of the time, eye AF does not work at all in colored light it seems and regular AF is slow for flashing lights - it just seems to never be able to fully focus between the flashes (not talking about strobe lights, even just 1-2 Hz flashes make it unusable often); the dynamic range feels 2x worse than my old Nikons D600 and D750 (I am unable to push shadows at all without introducing extreme noise even at ISO 1600). But the tilting screen is great and even the resolution is ok for me.

A7III can shoot 10FPS uncompressed in HI+ mode, which doesn't give you live feed in EVF. In HI mode, which supports live feed EVF, it can shoot 8FPS.
A7IV, on the other hand, can only shoot FOUR FPS, if you want lossless and turn EFCS OFF. When the shutter speed is too high, EFCS can totally ruin the out-of-focus areas (like ugly cut-in-half bokeh balls). And because there isn't any auto switch between EFCS ON and OFF according to shutter speed, many people just leave it to OFF. So to those guys, it's a 4FPS camera.

    a) it's an exciting time ?
    b) it's a suddenly become dull?

My a7III is a bit of a nightmare at times. I only shoot video on it so I can only speak about that.
Steady shot? It's on but it may as well not be - handheld footage looks like the shooter is having micro seizures. It's fantastic in sunlight but the missing focus in low light is aggravating. Actually, what is more aggravating is the pulsing focus even though you haven't moved, your subject hasn't moved but the light changed. I won't bs you and say I"m a top notch videographer with years of experience under me but I want to do the BEST job I can at any given time. That means that I research, learn and practice. Any time I've shot a band with show lights ranging from somnambulant to frenetic it will be sharp in the white light and fuzzy in all the others. The focus will pulse between the subject at the front and , for example, the drummer at the back no matter what I do, in shooting technique or farting around with settings. I would be extremely willing to upgrade just for the real time tracking. When this one came out I thought, nah too much redundancy for me to be able to justify the expense. Now? I'm thinking, I'm thinking....

I've been a Canon shooter for several years. This said, call me stupid if you want, but when you speak of "Phase Detect points" how do these "detect points" know (detect) exactly what I am wanting to focus on?? Take this example. Taking a picture. My subject being an object closest to the camera off on the right, occupying only 1/3rd of the frame. So 2/3rds of the frame is filled with a distant object which I intend to blur (or very soft focus). I choose a shallow DOP (say something like f/4.5). Okay so how do these 693 Phase Detect points know I want to focus on the closest object - the object occupying only 1/3rd of the frame, rather than the furthest object that is occupying 2/3rd of the frame? (My Canon has a focus toggle button that allows me to change (move) the focus points to different areas of the frame). How is a situation like this example handled by the Sony? (Anyone??)

At the time of writing this, here in Germany the a7 IV costs 2700 € whereas the a7 III is 1900 €.
Either of these two will be my entry into the full frame world.
But the 800 € difference makes me really insecure as to which model I should go with.

I love the dual UHS-II slots, so now they both write extremely quickly. But im getting WAY too much flicker/banding in my photos.
I shoot music concerts/night clubs and so I deal with production lighting. My A7III turned out beautiful photos with no issues. But now under the exact same conditions (same venue, same lighting) im getting a lot of horizontal lines going across my photos (flicker/banding)

But what im saying is that im shooting at the same venue with the same lighting production, the only thing that has changed was going from the A7III to the IV and my III didn't have this issue and can't seem to understand why exactly... the only thing I can think of, is the new sensor or hoping it can be fixed with firmware update.

Probably needs a firmware update. Don't get trick by business, A7iv is not worth the price. The camera is worth 2k, but the chip shortage won't allow it to go to it's true price point. The A7iii is worth 1600 but they won't price it lower to incentivize people to overpay for the A7IV. I'm praying for the A1 to get a little lower.

I've recently moved to Sony and picked up a very nice used A7R IV at a very competitive price from my local camera store. That is going to let me get the FE 200-600 rather than having to think about getting the Sigma.
New and shiny is nice but getting a deal brings a nice warm fuzzy feel. If I was weighing up between a III and IV I'd probably go for the III and either spend the extra on glass or really good filters or any other quality kit really.

Great video as always. One benefit of the silent shutter is keeping the shutter count down which really helps when you go to sell. Also replacing shutters is not cheap and it will reduce the need to do so. I just got top money for a A7RIV as the shutter count was only 1600 despite me taking an estimated 35,000 photos. Upgraded in late November when it came out, no regrets. The Autofocus is a noticeable step up in confidence, especially in lower light situations.
The screen is more reliable in terms of exposure as well.
I think at both 1600ISO which I often use it at, its slightly cleaner than the A7III? Perhaps the noise pattern is improved, at even 6400 ISO I prefer the noise pattern on the IV over III.
The new body feels a lot nicer, also the buttons are nicer to click. Love the new flaps and doors. 33MP is the perfect sweet spot, I think the colours are slightly better as well.
If you could bare the extra cost I highly recommend the IV, even tho the III is a perfectly great camera even in 2022, quality of life improvements will make you smile.

Just picked up a used a7III for $599USD, but I also got an a6600 last week for $1000USD. Not sure which to keep and which to sell as if i sell the a7III i can afford a really good lens for the a6600, and I already have a Sigma 30mm 1.4 DC DN which I would need to crop to 1.25 to remove the vignetting on the a7III. The main advantage I see to the a7III is the low light performance.

@@froknowsphoto Looks like I'll be selling the a6600 then. Opinion on the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8? Thinking if I return the 30mm DC DN (still in return window somehow) and sell my old a6000 body I can almost break even on it.

@@DanielCheong90 Oh yeah, stupid good deal. I'm thinking something is going to be wrong with it even though seller says like new.. That or it is stolen and I get a good deal from the French riots last year haha.

@@NitroDragon The Sigma 24-70 is a steal. 95% of the G-master quality for 50% of the price. Don't bother with OEM lenses for the most part. 3rd party like Sigma are super good.

    Hey Jared!
I’m coming from a beloved Canon T6 Rebel and was thinking of investing in Sony (if not Sony then Fujifilm) and was going to pick this one.
Is that too big of a jump? I love Canon and have tried out their mirrorless and I don’t like the feel. I shoot street style photography and casual portraits with some occasional landscape/outdoors shots.
