    At first I was like “oh, haha, water dude” but this dude knows his stuff. I’m a bio and geo major and a lot of what he says makes sense. We had a whole discussion in one of my chem labs about how small doses of distilled water aren’t necessarily harmful, but they’re definitely not as good as anything with minerals dissolved in it. Distilled water is essentially sterile water. I also really love his adherence to “everyone deserves clean, accessible water” and how passionate he is about this.

      Yeah, I had initially seen him on We're In Hell's video on that "Down to Earth" show, and the clips of him from that make him look kind of pretentious, but it seems like either he was really edited to fit a stereotype there, or the WIH video really mischaracterizes him (then again, he's not in the video that long). I was pleasantly surprised when he talked about Flint, Michigan and how bottled water is a scam. I really wish he'd gone a step further on that and connected the two topics by explicitly saying how beverage companies will actually take people's municipal clean water, bottle it, and sell it back to them (I think Nestle did that in Flint, actually?). But it was great that he's thinking about that, and about water access in general, as well as related ecological issues.

    • @Mopesil
      @Mopesil 3 роки тому +45

      @@sholem_bond as someone that watched his Down to Earth episode i must say that is way more a fault of the show itself than of WIH. Down to Earth has this "bourgeois wellness" that makes his argument be mainly about "rarity" and "healing super-properties" (from Olien concept of Superfoods that is the main focous of the show) and never says for example that the problem isn't tap itself but the practice of selling tap as this special kind of water

      But he does the same thing... mineral water brands exploit the poor areas they are sourced from, harm the environment shipping water thousands of miles instead of the very efficiently sourced and purified tap water and not to mention he actually does try to say the water has the ability to heal or improve tour health when the reality is that you would have to drink it daily to consume enough of the calcium and magnesium in it to benefit because those are the inly benefits. He doesnt actually care because he would recommend a refillable filter to filter tap water and daily multivitamins which are much cheaper than 6 dollar bottles of mineral water every day.

    • @egg4666
      @egg4666 3 роки тому +14

      @@static_kitten he did mention filtering water. but now it gets complicated when certain brands do take advantage of that cause each one is different, cause of the location. in terms of healing water, that seems like something that involves the laws of germany so i'm not sure about that.

He also talked about how water companies are overvharging and essentially falsely marketing their product to be beneficial when (according to him) they have no benefits which is definitely political. because its a problem that can only be fixed through policy such as in germany, he said that distilled water is marked as not for human consumption.
      he’s definitely a sweet man and its nice to see someone so passionate about something but its nit just the taste of water he talked about. He also talked about real issues that surround water and ultimately the ways any of these issues would have to be fixed is political

    When my dad was going through chemo, the doctors actually recommended to him a specific water that was also naturally carbonated but mostly had a lot of minerals that he needed and had trouble getting in his diet because chemo fucks with your appetite. I tasted it and it actually tastes quite salty and not very good in my opinion but I'm not a fan of sparkling water. Wish I could remember the name of it.

    Something that wasn’t discussed in this video is how far these bottled waters (glass and plastic) have to travel to get to consumers. Your tap water from your house/apt is sourced from your local watershed therefore does not take nearly as much energy to get to you as the Queens water from the UK or any other bottled water.
    Also tap water can be spring water. Spring water means it comes from an underground aquifer. Municipalities source your drinking water from both groundwater and surface water.
    Tap gets a bad wrap, but it’s the safest, cheapest, and most environmentally friendly option out there for drinking water. If you don’t like the taste or are scared of lead or other contaminants add a filter to your faucet and change it every few months. Also change the aerator on your faucet.
    Although it should be noted that tap water from your house (at least in the US) has to meet more stringent regulatory standards compared to bottled water.
    PSA from a water treatment engineer from the US

      I agree but I was under the impression (assumption?) that since most are just tap water they bottled it closer to the destination. That would be so goofy to ship tap water across a large country lol. Except for water scarce areas, prob makes sense to ship tap to California and stuff. I’ve seen water claiming to both be from the Himalayas and environmentally friendly, that’s nuts if you cared you wouldn’t ship it across the globe.

Hell, I feel sick just drinking slightly cooler than room temp water. So for me, I can see where he's coming from, but that is also just based on taste alone. It's actually really fascinating seeing him talk about it all and especially what got him into his love of focusing on water. The video's fun, but it's *really important to clarify* that fluoridating the water supply was a massive public health achievement in the U.S. Far fewer children get cavities here because our tap water is fluoridated, which is *especially* beneficial for low-income households in which parents might not be able to afford regular dental care. It's a different situation throughout Europe, like Martin's native Germany, where many children receive school-based dental care & therefore don't need additional fluoride.
    tl;dr Fluoride in our tap water is the closest thing to socialized medicine in the U.S. and is, therefore, really fucking cool.

      Recently my countries tap water was tested and in many areas due to agricultural runoff it was found we had levels of stuff which could mean higher levels bowel cancer for population.

    I fully understood what martin was talking about when he said that water tastes differently, I drink a lot of different kinds of water (weird flex ik) and some waters just dont taste good to me even though people I know didnt really understand it.
    I am so suprised to learn more about this and honestly I think what Martin is doing is really cool! He really earned my respect tbh

      yea, my friends and used to have heated conversations about what water is the best water. I was kind of surprised to see people being so dismissive of the idea that water could taste different.

      yes!! water DEFINITELY has a taste, I don’t know much about the logistics behind like the guy they interviewed but I’m glad to see other people finally acknowledging that waters can indeed taste different

    I was skeptical at first because I expected him to be a snob. But I love how he’s skeptical of packaged water and supports tap water (when it is safe).
