@@TackleAdvisors I agree my dear advisor. 30 years ago Okuma came to the market with a lot of innovative designs, I had many of them. Those days the down side was the gear material Taiwanessium (Chinessium was under development, ha ,há!) it wears out fast. The worst part I remember was the pick up bushing (bail bushing) made probably of "crappodium" when stops to roll it gets a thin groove, cutting the fishing line without a chance to find a replacement of that bushing...However innovative reels.
By the way, the choice of their building materials are based on the target market, higher end price, better materials. My experience was in the South American market those days, one of the cheapest. Hopefully they may invest wiser in US market materials.
Innovations from this guys around 80's ? The first lever drag deep fishing/heavy trolling reel and the "multi head" : a spinning reel with one body and three removable "heads" size 1000/2000/300 (pignon, bail, pick up, bobbin altogether) exchangeable just pressing a lever, very very clever design but crappy materials.
After going thru the circle of life, today I choose a cheap Shimano above others.

Okumas last forever man. I’ve had the same Coronado 65 for the past 7 years. Dropped in sand, beaten up by saltwater , countless 20+ lb stripers. Still works like a champ
Team okuma! I have the newest version of the Coronado CDX 80 and that thing is a beautiful looking durable tank! Also use a okuma convector cv45d and I love the hell out of it! I guess to some people if it don’t cost hundreds or thousands then it don’t last.
My 1 year old Coronado is performing terriblly. I fish inshore from behind a seawall and railings, so no sand, no splashes, just the regular stuff from the line. It's now making noise, a lot of resistence, and worst of all, not wounding the line evenly. The wounded reel looks like a upside down cone with line stacked mostly at the top. I'm guessing gunk built up at the lower part of the main shaft, but could it be something else. I guess i could disassemble, clean and grease it, but I am really not looking forward to it as a video i watched on the Coronado suggests the job is more difficult than expected. Also, every other reel I have, including a cheaper ABF have lasted twice as long on the exact same usage. It's a shame that this thing is so bad after only a year.

Great vid and I totally agree, there's no need to buy really expensive reels for yak fishing. Okuma and Penn reels are virtually indestructible and the best for yak fishing I've found. I've had an Okuma epix for 15yrs and I can't kill it, any time somethings getting worn out on it I contact Okuma and they send the part out for free because they carry a lifetime warranty. Recently started using Penn slammerIII's as well and I cant fault them. Been using one for 2 yrs on the yak and haven't even serviced it yet, still going strong.
Nice red! I bought a Walmart special rod and reel for $58 and all I did was change the line and it's lasted me all summer still going. Caught hundreds of speckles . Going to change the line again and see if I can get rock season out of it. Nice video thank you

I have a okuma avenger 6500. I have worked that real again and again. Big stingrays and sharks. Has yet to fail me yet. Had it for 3 years. For 40 bucks cant go wrong.
Not the least bit silly. Looking forward to further episodes. The next step up, the Inspira 40, is designed for inshore Salt water and only $20 or so more. ( YMMV )

$29 rod/reel loaded with 10 lb. mono - been using for a year. Other than a few tangles at the start, it has performed excellent. End cap deal at Walmart.
I use cheap reels all the time. I can usually buy several reels for the price of one expensive one. If I bust a cheaper one I just grab another one also when one is dead I can use the spare parts. Having more expensive gear does not make a better fisherman. The better fisherman is the one who can land the fish with a broken reel. Having said that I would not buy the cheapest reels on the markets like a $5 one :)
As far as work horses go okuma is a good company with budget reels and really expensive ones too. I’ve had the aveon 100 for about 5 years now and I’ve caught many many fish in salt and fresh water. It has some small issues but for a $25 reel that’s 5 years old and taking the abuse I’ve given it, I am impressed and try to buy okuma whenever I can
That first Red was a biggy! All I could think about was how would the "smaller" main gear hold up to fish that size?? Time will tell I suppose! Thanks for the super content by the way!

First sign of winds coming your way is often mare tails, especialy on a clear day like you had there Elias. Weather forecasts are really good, but being able to see the signs so you can think for yourself and get outta there before you get caught out should be something (even if only in a leaflet and link to a few videos type of fomat) that's compulsarily handed out with every watercraft sold. Maybe the subject for a future video?!?!?!?
Great video, thanks Elias, and am looking forward to see how well that Okuma holds up as I have had them recommended to me often over the last few years but having had to pay for and then repeatedly replace cheap reels in the past - without the reel even knowing what a kayak is, let alone taking the abuse of being partnered with one! - I have politely taken peoples advice and then bought something else. Thanks again man!
Edit: PS, my only gripe on seeing you with that reel today would be to say to put the cost up a couple of dollars and put a handle on the reel that a person can really get hold of if they're lucky enough to hook into something substantial. Your thoughts on trying to keep up with a big fish on a reel with a tiny knob to hold butween finger thumb??

@@redstwok1123 Damn, that’s unfortunate. Maybe it was a defective reel? Mine hasn’t had any of those problems. Maybe I just got lucky. Maintenance was just like all my other reels, just have to remember how to reassemble it lol Hope you are able to figure it out. Best of luck!

I'm glad to see you giving this one a try. I have been using the Epixor in saltwater for years with no problems. I don't beat them up like you do, but then, who does? ; ) I will be keeping an eye on this ongoing test.
The biggest freshwater fish I ever caught was on an ultralight Okuma panfish reel that came with a pack rod for forty bucks overall.
Its FAR more important to buy quality oil and grease and learn how to properly service a reel than to buy an expensive reel.
still fishing 2 kast king sharky 2s on your recommendation 3 years later caught 20lbs cod I had to release Gulf of Maine, haddock and 42" stripers on both in NE its all about maintenance use rinse repeat

I will NEVER buy an expensive rod and reel ever again! I out fish a lot of my friends that are broke buying all that expensive gear! LOL
Usually you get what you pay for. I had a Okuma spinning reel that really didn't cost that much, it was one of my better reels for a long time... until I accidentally broke it.

That's not a bad way to shop lol. He looks at reels all day and gets all sorts of solicitations. As do I to a degree, and the sub $100 reel category is a tough one to shop for. But we will monitor it closely. Day 1 - it was awesome. As good as the new Tsunami Shields were out the box.
that reel is handling the job real good
For the past two years I've been using a cheapo Daiwa Sweepfire 3500 an average of 3 or 4 times a week every week between April and December. I keep telling myself I'll buy a more expensive reel as soon as this one quits. I thought for sure I'd have a new reel by now, but it just keeps working and hasn't had any issues, despite being dropped many times, submerged in saltwater, covered in sand, etc., etc. Though I haven't caught any bull reds with it... yet.
I’m on my 2nd okuma avenger, about $45, the first one was 3 years old when some low life stole my gear, and it performed as good as the day I bought it, the newer version is even better!! I fish nothing but saltwater, they make some great reals. It amazes me when some have to have the $300+ reels.. oh well.. good vid I think you’ll like the okuma.. w

Okuma Ceymars and Inspiras for me in the yak. They have outlasted every (more expensive) Shimano and Daiwa I have owned.

Dang, I 'm poor lol. Most I've ever spent on a reel was 50-I still use it. most expensive combo is less than $170. But I am casual I suppose. Thanks for posting these videos man!
Fish doesnt discriminate what gear you use if you know what you are doing plus if your gear does everything you expect it to do. Then it should be fine if its not expensive since by the end of the day what matters is you are enjoying fishing and best of all, catching fish.
I myself have used cheap gear for a $25 combo from Walmart and now to $250 setup. The only thing is that i can say tho is sometimes the more you spend on your fishing gear, the better the construction is.
By the end of the day you spend your money where you feel it matters.

Enjoyed the video, as always. I’ve been a sub for a while and this is the first time I’ve noticed you including any “after care” for your reels. I’d be interested in seeing a short video on how you care for your rods & reels after each fishing trip. It seems no matter who I ask, I get a different opinion on equipment care after a salt water trip (kayak).
Typically they get a rinse in the bathroom sink. Conventionals I have zero issue working on. I have two Daiwa Saltists running on 7 and 5 years old respectively. Pre-levelwind ones. Spinners I'll hit weak points with corrosion X like the line roller bearing. Stuff with crazy seals I don't mess with.
@@EliasVFishing Do you usually tighten down the drag before rinsing? It appeared that you checked the tightness of the Right side handle cap.
@@woodystemms3799 I typically loosen up the drag before storage...the handle I believe was a little loose.
@@EliasVFishing Loosening before storage is old habit ... but tightening before a rinse, which makes so much sense, had eluded our brain for decades.
Cheap reel sure can handle big fish.. for $50 they can handle 6-7kg fish no prob but soon after couple of fish with that size, gearing start to feel sandy a little bit. I have Cando 2500 (TICA sub company), its gear feel a little sandy after landing 2 stigray weight about 4-5kilos each. Been 10 years, its still smooth like butter. Really impressive for 3+1BB conventional.
I am surprised you have not tried the Okuma's before Elias. In my opinion, they are hands down the BEST VALUE bar none! I have 3 old school EFb's that were an all metal frame and gears. Prob 3-4 of the a series that were a composite frame w the same gearing. Prob have 6-8 Avengers which are a $35-40 reel w 7 ball bearings and some other misc models. I salt water fish in SW Fl out of a yak also. That's a dunk and splash just about every trip out. They are easy to take apart and parts can be bought from Tuna's reels parts cheap. The "new" Epix is now a $58 reel, iv not tried the new model yet. Seriously I am getting a solid 2-3 yrs maint free w a rinse. In comparison to Penn, it's no comparison. I had a new Clash w the super " CNC Gear Technology". The gear was grinding. $52 + shipping for the main gear. Can you say FREAK THAT ! I sold the damn thing and bought another Okuma. I like Dawia and Shimano but there over engineered and parts are hard to get. I have well over 40 reels and am a fisherman. That 1st fish was a tank ! I thought the rod was going to snap. I have been trying the Tica reels now. Built very much like Okuma w terrible marketing but there available on Amazon and are easy to service as well. All that being said, stick w the lower gear ratios . The few bad reviews I have seen were gear issues on high speed models but I have not experienced any of those issues .Big $ reels are a waste, buy cheap and rebuild or throw away. Also like Fin Nor but they were bought out by United Outdoors and discontinued. I am nor buying Abu or Penn or Pflueger. Keep up the good stuff Eli.
I had an epixor years ago. It lasted for many years. Just gotta rinse it off
Nice. . I would consider this real I also been having big success with kastking Sharky 2 and Sharky 3 which is just slightly more expensive than your Akuma
One of my most dependable and durable reel I have is a Penn fierce 2500. I think I got it for about 45-50 4 years ago. I've also heard those Creed reels the weird lime green ones a Dicks are good for the money never tried them though. I have a cheaper Okuma reel and I've never had any problems with it either.
Okuma has been around for a long time in the asian market.
Try nifty Daiwa 120XA as inexpensive backup reel. Spool 17lb. mono. Strange and oddball but works.
Best cheap real i bought was a $20 quantum optix 40 spinner. Had it for 2 years now and still working like new. Never babied, surf fishing it. And honestly way better than my sharky 2 reel from kast king (lasted less than a season) that cost 4× the price and both reels used primarily for tog

Great video and a decent real, but IMO the Penn Pursuit III has it beat in initial quality and specifications. It's still early to know the overall longevity of the Pursuit III, but it is certainly a game changer in the low priced offerings. My 0.02

I have a few okuma spinning reels and I really like the inspira and helios. The helios is around 100 but it is very competitive with a Shimano ci4 stradic. The inspira are on sale for around 50 often on Amerzon and if you don't need saltwater protection they are very smooth and lightweight. I just upgraded the drag washers to carbontex $10 on the fleabay and I'm sure the same ones would work for the epixor.

Lesson learned here is times have changed and the market is too competitive now a days which is good for us

Depends, some reels are very difficult to work on. I didn't open Tsunami Shields nor Daiwa Fuego LTs ever. I work on conventional reels no problem
I open all my spinning reels at the end of the season. I bought some penn blue grease and diawa oil. They work like new when I’m done. Takes 30 min. Give it a shot. You could do a video on reel maintenance

My Mitchall 300 I bought in 1967 for $21.00 is still going strong and it has had the hell beat out of it( this reel l in NOS condition can sell for over $1000)

Most high priced reels aren’t worth that much money. Especially for the average fisherman. More important things to spend money on.
Seems like you work your reels pretty hard, I know you talked about not wanting to break the bank but what are your thoughts on van staals? The new VR50 seems like a perfect dunkproof kayak reel if you can manage not to pitch it overboard.

you should review the Marathon Guardian Reel - its a Dick's Sporting Goods issue reel for $35. They have a small line of cheap rods and reels that are pretty decent for the price.

I have a cheap reel that I use and I soak it in bucket of fresh water for a few minutes and then spray it down with WD-40 afterwards. It's held up for six months if sporadic use.

Try out the Daiwa Revros LT $50 its a beast for the price 22 lb of drag great for those bullreds and big uglys
The exceler he referenced earlier in the vid was a reel I sent him. WHich is very similar to the Fuego lt minus seals that held up for half a season of abuse...Great reels for the coin. Better gearing than the okuma but not as rigid at the reel stem

Okuma fin chasser series... 9 ft spinning rod and reel 70 $ combo. ( yeah, the big yellow kit ). My fishing line is braided 50 pds test. ( cost me 50 $ !!! ). Made in China. All of it. Performed beautifully. Fishing in the St-Laurent river arround Montreal Canada for45 pds yellow Sturgeon. I'll never ever pay more from now on. You see, car doors are my nemissis. 300 to 400 $ rod and reel won't win either against a car door. So for my buck, Shimano $$$ Or Okuma ? Math is math. Okuma wins hands down. I'll get 5 Okuma for 300 $. I can keep breaking, stepping or slaming the doors on 'em. Okuma wins.
I have the stratus VI 65 and 55 from dicks. Both workhorses and are hidden gems.
