Used to use this trick of canned whole corn 50 years ago for catfish and carp - 1st day of fishing might not catch many, but when 1st day of fishing is over, throw the rest of the canned corn in the water as chum and come back the next day with corn and WOW - fish are biting everywhere! It was lots of fun and it worked really well. Back then it was 3 cans of corn for $1.00 where I lived.

When I was in the Navy, I was station down in New Orleans I would catch Sheep Heads and a lot of Red fish also some Speckled Trout. Best fishing that I have ever done in my lifetime.
A friend of mine showed me another trick. When we pulled up in the boat, he would take his oar and scrape some of those protruding barnacles and get those Sheepshead in a feeding frenzy.

My dad was great at getting good hook sets on Sheepheads when others (like me) were missing them left and right. Especially in fast moving tide changes at choke points like the Oregon Inlet at the OBX in NC. He would say the secret was “setting the hook before you felt the bite”. He also often rigged it drop-shot so the weight was below the hook, sometimes using 1/8 oz above the leader and a split shot or 1/16 jig head below, with the hook swinging off a 3-4” dropper loop between the leads. It kept just enough tension on the line that he could feel anything. He’d say stuff like “oh there’s one sizing up my bait right now…he’s thinking, he’s thinking, he’s staring really hard…”BAM hook set. And my brother and I NEVER SAW THE ROD TWITCH or line move or anything that indicated a nibble.

Enjoyable video thanks. Here in SE Australia we use corn to catch Carp.I use long shank hooks and load them the whole length and perhaps there is some left after they have had a nibble?
As to missed strikes I wonder if circle hooks would work better? I’d love to have a session there on those Sheepies! I’ve heard stories of success using snails!!
Very nice! I’ve used circles and they’re not very effective on these sheeps.
use a size 4 short shank hook, for carp
Hey buddy I have a question I'm going down to Cape Charles Virginia for 4 days next week me and my wife have sea streams with the peddles I wanted to know I wanted to know were should go to catch sheep's head
No clue about that area but I would fish the bridges closest to the Atlantic Ocean that you can get
I wonder if soaking hominy in sardine oil before heading out would work?
It couldn’t hurt lol
You can also use clams (brined) . Once the squid or clams are brined you can keep them on the boat without refrigeration as long as they are kept in the salt (sea salt recommended)
Right on!!
Georgetown SC…. Absolutely never thought of corn and salt/brackish water. We have used yellow corn for bream and it works pretty good but I’ll definitely try it. Love your channel!!! I guess the dip net is gone? 😂
Have you used corn 🌽 or hominy on any other species? I was wondering if white perch 🐟 would bit off of it 🤔
Not yet but I will lol
Suffolk, Va. near the Chesapeake Bay. Love catching Tautog, Stripers, and Flounder.
Very nice!!
You should try some of those crappie bites or salmon eggs on sheephead. I don’t know if it would work but it’d be worth a try.
You might be on to something there!!
Are you fishing the the Palmetto/Bradenton CSX train bridge?
Port Arthur, Texas.. my PB sheepshead is 23" and I caught a 22³/⁴ the same day
Studs!!
Love it man!!! Your videos are inspiring!! Keep up the great work!!
Thank you 🙏
Hey I am from Alapaha, Ga. I haven’t fished very much the last few years but I stumbled on your fishing videos and I love to fish but work gets in the way. I’m getting close to retirement so I may get more active in fishing. I love the taste of sheepshead fish. I also love the simplicity of your equipment and low budget boat.😂❤😂
I think Sheephead tastes better than Spiny Lobster! I absolutely love them!
They are pretty dang good!!
Thanks for sharing, thanks for experimenting different type of bait for us hobby fisherman. Thanks from Singapore.
🙌 thank you for watching!!
Loving your content brother! Army Vet watching from Coalmont TN. My favorite fish to catch is catfish! We noodle for em down here and we jug! Keep it up sir!
Nice!!
Awesome man, I wonder if this will work up north?
I think it should, let me know if you try it!!
@@southernsalt I'm going to try it next time I'm out
Try a bigger hook Long #8 and bend the tip out a bit. frozen corn is more stiffer.
That's crazy. Sometimes when I catch sheepshead I have a real hard time getting the hook out of their hard mouths. Sometimes the hook breaks. Revolutionary!!
🙌 🙌
Covington La. Not sure what PB size was but it was on a guided trip out of rockport Tx
🙌
I live in Somerset tx , I'm going to corpus Christi in a couple of weeks I'm going to try the corn and homony
Nate, seems like some people can catch fish with just a bare hook. Tey using the shells from Velveeta Shells & Cheese. Currently living in Iowa, headed down your way next week house hunting.
Possibly I may try that
Hey I live in Pearl River, La if you wanna call that livin but my favorite fish to catch are the one’s that’s biting. For me it’s all about the experience. You know like tricking a fish into thinking that soft plastic minnow is so tasty that he needs to come take a bite & try it out !!! Keep up the good work.
Viewing from south Texas near South padre island! Love the content!! Will try this for sure
🙌 🙌
What do you think about spraying the hominy with scent?
I’m not sure but I don’t think it could hurt
I love those sheepies.but didn't know they like corn .great video thanks
🙌
Congrats on such a great and creative video!
Thank you!!
Open a can or two and divide it up in some little Ziploc baggies. Take a bag with you and keep the others in the fridge or have it for dinner. Good video.
Right on
Super fun to watch! Great job out there testing the two kinds. I learned something new!
🙌 thanks brother can’t wait to see what you do with the Hoodwinks!!
@@southernsalt thank you sir! I’ll try them on our shallow flats. Clear water should be good for the colors I picked.
Thanks for the assom tip ! Does it matter if its caned corn or fresh corn 🌽 ? Dang I knew that was a good sheep's head but dang , wtg!. Maybe I can catch some big grouper if I use a whole ear of corn 🌽 ?
I I don’t think it matters too much
Long Island ny. Caned corn good for çarp n flounder. I do a lot of porgy/scup fishing
Right on!!
