I find the Onyx Boox Max Lumi to be an ideal device for my University studies (adult learner) and for my work as a Trainer (Instructional Designer, Instructor). It's one device for notetaking, visual notes/whiteboarding, reading (Neo and Kindle), viewing PPT's (creating initial drafts too), mind-mapping, and communication (primarily e-mail). I have my mobile for any other communication needs and a MacBook Pro for everything else. While I find myself having to write clearly (makes reviewing easier), as opposed to my usual illegible scrawling, it works well. Features such as the split-screen, searchable written notes, colour support when exporting, and the solid battery life, as well as being a single device that can do what I need and do it well this device is a no-brainer. I'm not keen to walk around with several specialist devices (one for reading, one for notetaking, one for communication, one for...) and nor can I afford it. The front/back-light is good when reviewing and reflecting in bed at night as I can turn it down enough not to disturb the missus.
Yes, as a all rounder e-ink device, Max plays well. We can't afford various special devices and can't bring all of it everytime. I am also in looking for an e-ink and torn between Papyr and Max. Seems, Max will be fit my requirement.
I only want to own 1 e-inc display. The Onyx seems to function well as a reader and works well enough as a note taker running an open operating system like android.
You nailed it coach. I work at night and read a lot of academic pdfs and I want to increase how much I read. I fell in love with einks ever since the original Boox Note. I opened a pdf and found myself absorbing more information then on an LCD and comparable to paper. Then I put all my pdfs on it and could travel again with peace of mind. This is where the Lumi fits. It's a shame they can't get a writing experience anywhere close to Remarkable, but if it's a software problem (same pen works after all) than maybe there is still hope!
Thank you for the video! The "problem" is that you have a lot of different devices rather than Max Lumi being able to do many things at the same time. Very few people out there own all the of the following at the same time: a ReMarkable, Papyr, iPad, a home PC with two screens etc. Personally, I do not own any eInk devices and I do not have an iPad (not a fan of Apple), but I do have a gaming laptop (not very portable) and a smartphone which I often use as a computer replacement thanks to Dex. As I am reading a lot of texts, mainly PDFs and books, a device like Onyx Boox Max Lumi or the smaller Note Air - waiting for your and Voja's reviews to make up my mind - could be an ideal solution for me. In fact, I could most likely connect my phone wirelessly to either Max Lumi or Note Air and transform the tablet into a larger portable screen for my phone. In the end, I believe there are more people who would love to have a single device that does it all, because it is cheaper, lighter to carry, easier to use, and more environmentally friendly as we are simply inundated with gadgets.
It should be noted that Google will not work with device at all now, saying 'This is not a certified device' and thus blocking accounts and everything on the play store.
@@Aliyerki does it work well for research pdfs? I'm doing tech research and a lot of 2 column, 10pt papers that I have to print because its too hard on my eyes to read them on an LCD. Do you have it working with a reference manager like EndNote or Mendeley?
Same here, I am thinking of buying this for e-textbooks and scientific papers. You don't wanna print out a 500-page textbook because that's expensive, heavy and not green.
I have the lumi and the payr. To me, lumi is a little heavier but much pleasant surface to hold on. Payr surface makes my hands feel dusty. The experience of talking notes on lumi is better too. It's quicker response and even though glass it doesn't feel glass at all. Solid writing feeling. The calendar memo is super. I can write daily memo that shows on screen saver. The ereading is ok. The lumi is something that I really need if in the dark. This tablet is full of features that it's not something you can get from other e-reader/note taker.
This seems to be the ideal device for some like me. Am a musician and am looking for a device to read sheet music on, plus note taking and potentially recording and listening to myself and other recordings online. I considered the iPad but it just is too bad for the eyes when using it for hours every day. And as an iPad could never never replace my laptop anyway I don't really need it, as attractive it is. So this might ft exactly into that gap, big size PDF reader, note taking, and amazingly useful online functionalities. I am in. Thanks for your videos, JB
i'm planning on getting it for my upcoming return to school, will be taking on a master's and it's main purpose will be reading academic articles, PDFs, and textbooks; secondary purpose will be note-taking and i think i'm willing to accept an eink device that isn't the best note-taker as long as it's decent enough.
Good point. I see an e- ink device useful I two areas. Ebooks and note taking. Remarkable is a device, that replaces a paper note book. Period. To achieve a perfect writing feel seem to be extremely difficult, as only one small company - Remarkable came very close to it. A combination iPad - Remarkable-computer covers 100% needs of an average user. An e-ink device with all functionalities is a huge compromise, where you have many features where none is working 100% perfect. If only the lag by handwriting is clearly sensible, the device is for me disqualified. I make a lot of notes. Lot of horribly looking notes with many scratches, corrections and changes. Remarkable will help me to make them looking nicer. Voya is making great reviews, but he still is searching an iPad in each device, he is testing. Maybe some day he will come to the point that an e- ink will never ever be better than an iPad. For me 10 most important characteristics of an note taking device are: 10 x natural hand writing feel without lag!
And the question I have for people that used both the rM1 and Boox devices, or even the rM2 and recent Boox devices... How is the input lag on Boox devices? Is it better than rM1? The same? Worse? If it's worse, I'd have a hard time switching brands, if it's the same or even better, the decision would be pretty clear
In my case, I don't have a desktop PC. I have a Samsung Notebook 9 running a 3 monitor setup which I also take the laptop to work. And although I do have numerous tablets between the Samsung Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab A etc, all with S-Pen writing capability, none really function as well as a ebook, note-taking device. A Lumi won't replace the laptop/desktop pc or for that matter a tablet. In terms of where this device falls under, I agree it depends on the user and what they want out of it. I see it as a complimentary device that basically is a note reader/writer but with much more, something I needed. That self aware of what I wanted the device to do led me to looking for a device that is good for note-taking and book reading, but can give me the tools to go a bit further. Some may say "but what about the distraction", but distraction really falls upon the user having the discipline to concentrate on the task at hand. When I do note taking, it's just that. So having other features on a device won't distract me. But it's nice having them there if I do need to jump to a site for further info etc or do two things at once. This is why I changed my choices of which device to get. Its funny but in a matter of weeks it went from the Remarkable 1, to Supernote A5x, to A6X, then back to Remarkable 2 and now the Note Air. The Lumi, I felt was a bit too big and pricey, but what I love about it is that it is so capable of doing many things. Writing feel as good as Remarkable 1, close to RM2. Split screen, Page management looks great, as the tools and functions. If price wasn't a factor, I would get this, but for now I'll settle on the Note Air. Bottom line the Lumi (and if the Note Air is similar) would be a very good device to compliment ones existing setup. But to answer your question, it would probably will replace my tablets since I use those mostly for note taking, but it won't replace my laptop.
Your statement opens up an interesting perspective and I tend to agree. Of course this is highly subjective and completely depends on one’s specific use cases, but my primary scenario for an eInk device is a) reading eBooks and b) using it as a paper replacement. And I want to do both things without the drawbacks that digital devices usually bring to the table: overboarding functionality and high potential for distraction. I want to concentrate on the task at hand and regain focus that is so hard to get these days. That’s why I preordered the reMarkable 2 (not the ideal reading experience though, I know). If I want all the cool functionalities that the BOOX Max Lumi has, I also want to use them to their full potential meaning I need at least a color display with superb reaction times. Otherwise I’d use my Surface Pro. Somehow I don’t see the exact niche this thing is trying to fit in because it wants to be a jack of all trades device without clear main purposes. The only thing I’m going to miss that this one has is the front lighting but that’s where the BOOX Note Air might come in handy. Anyways, the enormous price, reduced portability, and not really clearly elaborated use case of the Max Lumi just don’t add up for me personally. Just an opinion ‒ as you say it might be a fantastic tool given other circumstances and expectations.
Great point! I was also thinking why should I prefer Lumi over the iPad. The only edge Lumi has over iPad is that it has eInk. But other than that it is sub standard. Also, the form factor is not as good as 11 inch iPad Pro. Clearly a market position that I cant figure out.
Great content again! Had this video existed half a year ago I wouldn’t have bought laptop, ordered an iPad, preordered the RM2... would be perfect for my student needs!
I would rather have more features than not enough. It is nice to have a device you can grown into rather than one you can outgrow too fast. I always go back to my Rm1, since I already invested into it. I like it but it still lacks so many software features compared to all the other brands. I am still waiting for them to add basic shapes like straight lines, circles, squares and triangles so I don't have to use physical templates and rulers 😑.
not to mention slipscreen, landscape view (or lefthand mode), etc. My rM2 hasn't been shipped yet and I am wondering if I should cancel as long as I still can, and order the Boox Note Air instead. Because it's a hassle to use a tablet for PDF and rM1 at the same time in the university. Maybe the Boox may actually be the better choice for me but I can't decide out of fear of deciding wrong and maybe even wasting money...
JB, I think your perspective is really different than a lot of people's. Your workflow with this many luxury devices is really really unique. A lot of folks that the Max Lumi is a good fit for...are looking for something to be their main notetaker, pdf annotator, paper replacement, file organizer, etc. They are looking for one e-ink workflow solution. I still use my normal tablet for research and miscellaneous things. But working remotely...it is a huge benefit to move all of my typical files and paperwork to an e-ink device. Most people can't afford to have the reMarkable, Papyr, and Max Lumi...they have to choose one...so they don't face the same conundrum you do. (Hopefully that makes sense...)
Yes thanks so much and I’m just giving a bunch of use cases so I don’t have any preference or anything I want to make sure that comes across so this week will have some good videos I’m anxious to see the note air for sure
Why you don't use to read emails, onenote, Evernote, Nextcloud or any note taking app on play store, or even as a secondary display when you need to read something and move to that device....?
Hey hey I use my iPad for those tasks - Just saying I love the device but it can’t replace my iPad the iPad is so fast and clean and the screen is amazing on it. It’s a great device but I really don’t need it for those things even though I will test it that’s just me personally
I don't think I'd make the argument it's too good, I'd go the other way and say it's not good enough to replace multiple devices or to consolidate. If it was going to be your only device, then it may be adequate, but you got a pretty broad selection there filling specific niches.
I think the choice has to been in, what you are looking to do. I am going for a paperless life (as much as possible). My needs are: a) The best writing experience available (with the least amount of barriers as possible) b) a good reading experience c) ability to go online to read articles (newspapers etc...) d) do calligraphy c) draw/doodle d) Price is always a factor. My plan is this: writing - reM 2, reading - Pocketbook Color (If I could get it from channel give away , as I am a student and could never afford it on my own). The only thing I would be messing is access to the internet if need be. Now, what would you recommend?
Hello, JB! Very interesting and challenging question... As a researcher, I only have a laptop and a secondary monitor on my desk and I use a lot of paper for writing my planning and my creative ideas. Therefore, I preordered the RM2, but I would only have liked it to have a little more functionality for reading both academic papers and books. Onyx Boox makes amazing readers, but Lumi might be indeed more than I need. Remarkable 1 and 2 is a model for “Less is more” (fewer functions, less distraction, but maybe more focus and creativity), while Lumi might be an example for “More/too much might be less”…
Academic scientist here too, and I actually do like all the additional functions. I find the Lumi ideal because of the screen size, (perfect for academic papers) because it can synchronize Mendeley (my reference and literature storage system), because it can do all the note taking (it replaces my bullet journal and my larger paper notebook) AND it functions as an extra monitor (even though I already have two on my desk). Moreover; whenever I can, I prefer to shy away from my computer screens, but that is also because my work is fully computational already. For me, it also replaces my laptop when I'm travelling, if possible.
I have the Onyx Max 2 - and am considering upgrading to the Lumi. I use it for reading pdfs - and note-taking/evaluating essays/assignments on docs. i recently supported the top joy 7.8 color. Awaiting that.
It is super subjective I have my Supernote and I like it, some people really like writing on it, some people hate it. It is just different. I wish you could test these products would make a huge difference and you could get what you want for sure.
You know, as a batch 3 RM2 and an orderer of the Max Lumi, you know, I think you're right. After watching Voja put on his Nova 2 screen protector, I'm not sure I can deal with that hassle, and he's experienced at installing them! It seems like an expensive 'toy' and I'm not sure that what I need is more distractions. I can take a snipping tool of an excel sheet and pop it on the Remarkable for my processes at work. The Max Lumi is an e-ink android tablet, really when you think about it. I've requested to cancel it, we'll see what happens. I have an iPad mini 4, and I absolutely love it for reminders, emails, etc. I used to be decisive, now I'm not so sure.
Agree. For the workflow, nothing can beat the iPad/computer. I don’t think Lumi is an iPad replacement. Taking notes on remarkable has been truly been note-taking replacement. This is in contrast to iPad/ThinkPad 2-1 yoga. I wish the remarkable had a few more features but for what I bought it for it fits perfectly which is Note-taking/ sketch rough ideas and carrying all my notes. Now Lumi is promising because of backlight but the price does kinda make it a harder sell. It put it against the iPad. Really tough call but glad to have your real-world perspective.
Hey JB, this reply will be really old, but hopefully you might get to see it and reply? I have one question that I know I will get a very clear and precise answer from you with regards to the Max Lumi. I have seen and read that you can do a dual display i.e. one side is a PDF book and the other side you can write notes on. In this respect, does it have the ability to save the notes page according to the page you are making notes on the PDF book? And if I come back to that PDF book would it bring back the saved notes page according to the saved PDF page? On top, making notes for a PDF page, could you make like 5 pages of notes for that one PDF page? Cheers Matthew.
Matthew thanks for asking I know my Papyr device does that. I don't have the Lumi anymore as I sold it on eBay so I am not sure. Yes you can dual display on all BOOX devices, I am pretty sure you can have a different document open so you could have your book notes on one side. I will try later with the smaller BOOX device I have it all runs the same software. Thanks!!
i am totally mixed up now, i had the remarkable and the remarkable 2 and i find both much too expensive for what they do (or better what i do with them). But i like to be organized and focused. But i returned them because too expensive for the limited opportunities. I have an iPad, for private use, i have my iphone and as my main office computer a macbook pro. So i would like to have an e-ink device to organize my work better and note taking , for meetings, online or offline and to organize my customer filesand documents on one place (right now onedrive). So lets say, macbook pro for office and mobile, iPad only for everything outside os work (iPad Air) and Boox max Lumi 2 for work, on desk note taking etc. and on business trips, with the opportunity of doing much more with it then with a remarkable device and not need for a iPad pro 12,9. Or? Does it make sense. I am not sure, just an idea.
Great content! I have a RM1 for notetaking and that's what I was looking for: paper replacement and I love it for that. I preordered RM2 and now I am having second thoughts since I saw MyDeepGuide review on Max Lumi and it blown me away. As a student, RM is amazing for notetaking but one thing I cannot do on my RM is to take notes while reading (books, cases, slides, exercises, and so on). I need always to use 2 devices or print documentation and if I need to print it, I guess it no longer meets the original purpose of paper replacement, right? This lack of functionality becomes more difficult to bear specially when I see other devices already bringing that to their users. I am looking forward to see the review on Note Air, if these funcionalities are there and the writing experience is not much different from RM1, then probably it makes no sense to keep my RM2 preorder. RM software is becoming a serious limitation right now when looking to other eink devices.
I agree. I am Rm1 owner, and sadly remarkable lags way behind when it comes to software, specially when all the other brands are just pilling features now!
Ana, my needs seem to be exactly the same as yours as I intend to use my e-ink device for note-taking, reading and annotating alongside my Surface Pro and even my laptop. The important thing is the work flow that Onyx offers and reMarkable seriously seems to lack with its limited functionality. I'm used to writing on Android tablets, and I expect the Note Air to be at least that good. This is why I cancelled my RM2 order and opted for the Note Air even though I'm sorry that I have to miss out on the wonderful writing experience. @JB, I reckon there are not many people out there being the owner of several e-ink readers/notepads. Having that many devices for various purposes would certainly stress me out ;-) For those of us who can/want at the most afford just one e-ink device, possibly alongside a laptop/PC and/or even a normal tablet, the Max Lumi imho offers an almost full functionality for a serious worker particularly students who want to go paperless. Unless somebody simply needs a digital note-taking device with some minor reading, then the reMarkable might be perfect and the larger Onyxes would certainly be overkill. For me personally the Max Lumi is too big with its laptop size screen and certainly too expensive. The Note Air is likely going to offer similar functionality with a performance level that will just be sufficient for the serious worker. And I can just chuck it into my bag whereever I go and when I don't need my laptop or Surface Pro. I just fear that my beloved Kindle Voyage will indeed become obsolete.
@Ana and @Anja Same here. Also rM1 owner and still waiting for my rM2 to be shipped. Tho my problem also is that I need another device to view a PDF and takes notes at the same time. And with the limited space you've got at the university, that's more and more becoming kind of a struggle. I am also wondering if I should cancel my rM2 preorder and order the Boox Note Air, which would give me all those features. Even if the writing experience is a little bit worse, will it be a deal breaker??? I've never used a Boox device and you can't go into a store and test it, so I kinda fear to waste money by switching brands, OR NOT switching brands... as a student, the price of these devices already is something you need to save up for. The thing I am wondering is: Since I already own a rM1, if I was to cancel my rM2 preorder, order the Boox instead and once it's here feel like "nah, not what I wanted", I could order the rM2 again - but to a higher price : / The more I think about it, the harder a decision gets :D ... oof, I need someone to decide for me xD
@@ximaxwellix I don't know if that'll help, my Note Air is as of now on its way to Hong Kong and from there to Europe. I could theoretically have it within a few days depending on any delays over there and will test it for my student use. Also JB and Voja at My Deep Guide should really get them even sooner. I would suggest wait for those reviews.
We are all in the same boat 😅 the problem is that by being batch 7 I have plenty of time to think about it and see the competition providing the features that I miss in RM. Even today I reported all the improvements I need in the remarkable website hoping that they will read them and make something about that. If many report their needs maybe we will get something in return 😊
Hi, This is really a nice question. My set up is also based in 2 screens, tried before as vertical one, but was not productive enough, as I realized I did not really use it in fact when reading academical papers, publications, etc. Now for me having a tablet or an eink device like Lumia would fit, as I would have then during job time the lumia with onenote opened, and during research time I would use to review academical stuff, taking notes on it. Under this scope, I would say Lumia is a winner comparing it to my Samsung tab. I need to double check but the behaviour of Mendeley on Lumia. On Samsung tab works pretty well, and syncs perfectly. As zotero does not have an official app for iOS or android, I prefer to not mess around with workarounds and self made solutions for getting synching alive. Really don't have time for that! Also awesome your recognition to Voya for his superlative videos. He should get hired by Onyx directly for their trainings in on Lumia!
@@royalsexy hi, yes, i got it alive and working since December. I could sync mendeley over android app, make notes with neoreader, saving a copy of the PDF and reintegrating it back to mendeley. Then I have the original paper and the copy with my notes. The issue is now that Mendeley is removing the android App. Totally killing and miss leading in such modern times. I did not try web version as it is non sense. I just starting to think to migrate to Zotero... tried zo for zotero a couple of months ago.
I use a PC and an iPad Pro. Really I want something to take notes on during meetings etc as I don't like the iPad feel and, like you, don't like the paperlike. The remarkarble might be good but I'm not willing to support the company. The A6x is too small. I think my choices currently are the Onyx Boox Air - if it has a good writing feel- or the Papyr, which isn't available in Europe. I'd like the Papyr because of the collaboration options but have no idea if it will ever be available here. The Max Lumi might be decent but it is out of my budget.
@@pipari6666 Cancelled today, no feedback email and no money so far. But it's sunday in Norway also ;-). But a auto mail with confirmation would have been nice.
Hey Coach, love your videos. Your communication is really clear and on point, I enjoy that. Don't know if you've made a video about this yet, but I'd love to know how to use these devices, ie. Remarkable+iPad or others wrt. maximizing your productivity. Thanks!
@MorningCoach The Lumi will never properly replace your iPad (for colors, and video). But it could replace it for many other things. And why not have Lumi replace both the Papyr and the Remarkable? The Lumi frist and foremost, is to read. Read books, papers, etc. It is also good enough for writing notes. Maybe Remarkable is better, but you could still use Lumi as an option for reading and writing instead of having one e-ink for each. Also, would be interesting to see if the Lumi could run the Papyr software (like the iPad does). Curious about your thoughts on that.
Not bad - just different. The Lumi is a GREAT device, just big and heavy.... but for the right person it is really great. Oh and a little more expensive too. I have a writing screen protector on it that makes the experience better, oh and the stylus that comes with the Lumi - really bad
@@morningcoach thank you for your answer,i'm a university student and i write tons of pages of works, after watching many of your videos i think that the best is yet to come, because in my opinion a 13.3 tablet with RM2 writing features would be awesome for a student and could really replace real paper.
Can you do a comparison between remarkable and this tablet?? I’m looking for a note taking tablet for college but I don’t want the interruptions of other things on the tablet? Thank you and you also have a great safe day
as always with these devices, it is a personal opinion. i cancelled my rm2 preorder after using lumi for 1 week now. it perfectly fits into my usecases/habits. i owned a rm1 for almost 2 years. as good as notetaking was i did miss a few features that are now found on lumi. notetaking on lumi is close to rm1. that is perfectly fine for me. if notetaking on lumi was more like the max 3, i am not sure if i would be happy with it.
Thank you for bringing up an important point. More features shouldn't be the deicing factor---more features don't mean better user experience. People need to think about how they'll be using the device (in combination with other devices they already own, if applicable). While I really like the idea of a large eink screen for reading and therefore am interested in Max Lumi, there is a big question mark for Onyx products wrt security and privacy, which most people do not discuss and take into account (but should).
...and im waiting for RM2 (Patch 7) - Im Notre sure that this is a good e-ink, I would like to have space around the PDF to make notes and a highlight that follow the text. I see that on RM2 you can only highlight free, not by text, I dont like that. But I will see when I get my RM2 in November (Patch7). I think maybe BOOX Air is better...
To me, it was either buying a Papyr for $700 with less storage space and no front light or paying a bit more for those features. I'm using this as a textbook replacement. I may or may not use it to take notes. I've considered getting a Remarkable just for note taking, but I do enjoy good old graph paper in a 3 ring binder with my Pentel 207 :)
No they are all really pretty good at writing it’s just a remarkable does it a little better than a lot of them but they’ve been at it and that’s especially notetaking
Is the writing experience the same as the boox note line. I have a note 2 I am loving it but would like the bigger screen would the experience be the same? Thanks
Thanks again for this great video! I will keep using my IPad Pro for reading newspapers and magazines. But I will buy a Max Lumi as replacement for my Kobo ereader because I want a big screen for reading books. Greets from Belgium!
Hey I am using the Forma it is a little expensive - but I literally read it every night one of my most used devices, getting ready to use it now - I hear the Libra is great too - I just like the size of the Forma it is like a book perfect.
please tell me does Onyx lag a lil bit in notetaking or drawing? Is it better than remarkable with that? Coz I want a replacement for my laptop and mobile except for videos. Is it worth?
Wow....this is the first time I’ve heard that a device’s problem is that it is too good. I think each person’s “best” or “ideal” device can be different, based on a lot of things. You can read about or view all the videos on the internet about how OTHERS use the specific device being reviewed but in the end, you really need to ask yourself how YOU will use it and what YOU want out of it. So you need to know about ALL of the device‘s features and capabilities to see if they meet YOUR needs.
whats the best way to charge onyx max devices so that the battrys life dosnt get runnied also is there a certin brand of charge cord that is hiighly recommed for the onyx max lumi device
I think this device gives serious competition to Macbook Air when it comes to students and researchers, who rely a lot on reading PDFs, and this device definitely makes reading PDFs super fast with that large screen...
Im a beginner animator and dont have e ink / e notes device yet but my workflow atm is this: 1. Do calendar scheduling, flowcharts, storywriting, songwriting, storyboarding, sketching, all on paper (multiple notebooks). I do research on a browser while doing these stuff and use PC or phone for that. 2. I use android phone for communications only (chat, emails, video chat, voice chat) and consuming media on the go 3. Finish final work on my PC (consume media also here or on TV) 4. Review finished work on different devices (phone, tablet, PC, TV) And I'm looking to get a Onyx Boox Max Lumi 2 (or Note Air 2, still deciding) to take all my work for #1 in my workflow. First, will replace all of my notebooks. I think android e ink tablets are good for planning cos it also comes with a browser, which is super useful in my workflow, cos I do a lot of browsing on the web as I plan. Remarkable, Supernote, Quaderno and etc dont have this. Also, I write songs. And atm, if I want to record some draft melodies, I'll use my phone for that. Android e-ink tabs like the Onyx Boox come with audio recording which is great cos I can write a song and attach an audio clip of my recording anywhere on the canvas. No need to use 2 diff devices. My only problem right now is, for example, I'm sketching right, and I need reference images on the canvas as I sketch, Id be limited in black and white references and black and white sketch. Like, I want to get a Nova 3 Color but it's so small I can't do the rest of my planning work. So it's either, I wait for a large color e ink tab, or get both the Lumi 2 and the Nova 3 color. But then when I think about it, the price, and having to split the work into 2 devices, shouldn't I just get an iPad instead? Lol but then I loooove how easy e ink tabs are on the eyes. I do IT for my day job so when I do my side hustle as an animator, I just want to get off LED screens as much as possible. Dont want to break my eyes at an early age
First, thank you for all the effort and for sharing that effort. Mayhap an ignorant question but it's the one that drew me to your channel. I have Ipad(s) yoga(s) surface(s) literally quite a few tablet style devices. I probably have three or four ".pdf" type writing devices from early 2000's that never really worked all that well. The idea with my last surface and yoga was a device that I could also use for hand written "notes" and I simply have a hard time fitting them in my work space. I've been watching the Remarkable2 with interest and am somewhat put off by the positive cashflow model (negative to us) of paying now and shipping three months from now. I would like a device that feels better than writing on glass and is capable of filing or organizing my notes as I work through my day. Again, Not to irritate everyone :) this is probably why we are all here but I want to purchase yesterday and would appreciate your input. Wait for the RM2 or pull the trigger onm the note air or supernote or equivalent? Thanks for your patience and your guidance.
Hey JB, very prescient point. May be your most insightful and valuable video to date. As one with less experience than you, I found I really liked my Lumi when it came it-- took me a couple hours to get it set up just as I liked. Then my RM1 was delivered and I was up and running in 5 mins. And like you, I have other devices to check mail, my Discord server, etc.. And now I find I grab my RM1 when I head out the door, not the Lumi. WTF? The Lumi is way more powerful and I can do WAY more with it-- so why am I grabbing the RM1? Need to spend more time pondering... I'll get my Note Air this week-- I wonder if it will change anything? Somehow... I think not.
And least if people think I am criticizing you, I am not. I think you do an absolutely wonderful job in a thankless job. If not for you and DeepDive, we would not even know very much about any of these devices. I just think the manufacturers miss the point, and you are not an academic researcher, doctor, scientist, etc.. so you do not know what we want or need in trying to do our research. And most of them are just aimed for the general public in a me too rush. Please understand that I like listening to you every week, or couple of days, trying to make sense out of these devices and how they would work for me. And you are very common sense about what is happening, and are very forthright about how they fit into your workflow. Best Regards
Nope LOVE you are engaging with us, its a hobby just having fun, and love the people that are here. We are attracting some amazing people and to me that is what it is about :)
You make a very good point. For those of us who already own multiple devices, there needs to be a specific use case to require an Onyx Max. I own TWO Onyx Max devices: the original Max (1), and the Max 2 Pro. The Max (1) now basically serves as a giant e-reader for publications in PDF format. I can take notes on it or mark up the PDFs but I tend not to because the firmware is outmoded and it doesn't perform as well as the Max 2 Pro in this regard. The Max 2 Pro is really good for a similar use case, but with note taking/form filling/scribbling on PDF or e-books. I really like the split screen function where I can read a document on one side and take notes on the other. Still, as you say neither Max has not replaced my Kobo ereader - this is for long books in ebook format (not PDF), e.g. novels, books of essays, etc. It's an electronic paperback if you like. They haven't replaced my iPad, where I can interact with graphics, e-mail, collaboration platforms like Teams, etc. An e-ink device is too sluggish for heavy use in such tasks. Nor have they replaced the reMarkable, which is still the best for me as a pure note taker and writing/drawing device: meeting notes, writing drafts, sketching - all are really good on the reMarkable. The Max Lumi seems to have improved on my Max 2 Pro but for now, the reMarkable is still my choice for just writing something or sketching a drawing. It does these well and is uncomplicated to use. Maybe I am unusual in owning so many devices. For those looking for one device to do it all, maybe Onyx Boox is a possible solution...
I just ordered the Lumi! it took me a while to decide, too late to hesitate. I use a MacBook pro for designing typefaces, but I was too Mac-dependent and I started to do everything on it. I needed something more off-line, to move away from a bright screen, then I came across the RM and I was fascinated, but after a few reviews I realized it didn't do the things I needed. I agree that the Lumi does way more of what I need, but it's the only one that does the minimum that I need. Thanks.
Hey JB, I have been following your channel, excuse me, community for a while now. Good that you are into the e-ink devices. I use my Remarkable (1) everyday for note taking. I do not sign up for the Remarkable 2 because of the small improvements for me. I have an ipad out of 2013 and this device does not update to the higher OS. I use the ipad for large (multi-column) PDF documents, I have to read and annotate a lot. So, als based on your comments, I just ordered the Max Lumi, deliverd to me next thuesday. I am exited about that! The Papyr is not the killer device for as it is for you for sharing your content. That is not a needed option for me. I want to read PDF documents on a larger screen. BTW for e-books I have my Kobo Aura with backlight. Now I am reading your book: the Sacred 6 on the KOBO. Maybe the daily template for me on the Remarkable? Keep on doing the work. Good length of your braodcasting BTW. Greetings form the Netherlands!
I have a Boox Max Lumi and super happy with it. But then again, I don't also have an iPad, Remarkable, and Papyr. If you only want to haul around 1 tablet, I think it's great. For me it's not a replacement for anything, it's just an all-purpose device for when I want eye strain relief. It can also be a Kindle if you just install the Kindle app, which most of the other e-Ink devices can't do.
I think out of all the BOOX devices the Max Lumi is far the superior - for academic journals it is amazing and 100% agree if any of them can replace an iPad etc... I would vote for that.
On my Max3 I use ReadEra Premium for epub and Xodo for pdfs. For Note taking the Boox app. I have never used the Kobo reader, but both the Kindle and Play Store readers leave much to be desired.
Just a heads up, Xodo is not good for making notes on but then again I never write on documents and much prefer to use Bookmarks and Annotations. Call me anal but I value pristine documents, not a great fan of that vandalised look.
I bought the Boox Note Pro last year to use as a university student. I was going to switch to the Max 3 this year since I sold the Note Pro to my girlfriend because I totally converted her to E-Ink XD. But my motivation for almost buying the Max 3 was having a larger screen size. When taking academic notes and working 100's of practice problems over the course of a semester, particularly for engineering-related classes, the screen size of the Note Pro really limited me. Fortunately for me, Max Lumi was released before I went ahead and bought the Max 3. I think for students who do not have a lot of different technologies this tablet makes sense. Having the adaptability to use wired connections for files or wifi or have connected as a second monitor makes it really useful for University studies where there isn't consistency in terms of online or downloadable files across courses majors and departments.
The Lumi cannot fully replace an iPad or Samsung tablet yet, but iBoox is getting closer. Grey scale video may work OK for something’s, but sometimes you just need color, higher resolution, and frames per second. Will Boox be able to make its screen cast in the future able to cast at a higher refresh rate than the device it is casting from to overcome this. Another area that may not quite be there is virtual meetings with Zoom and the like. If the USB C OTG could support a webcam the outbound side might work OK and if one could live with only seeing greyscale on their end that might work. I use my iPhone as a webcam on our computers without built in webcams, so that might be another work around on the Lumi. There are a couple of areas that the Lumi can top an iPad or Samsung tablet. For longer reading times of academic and technical works using a frontlit large eInk device is better for the eyes and less headaches. For the last couple of hours reading before going to sleep eInk can make for a much more restful night’s sleep. I think to be as productive as possible while maintains good eye health at the moment we still need both LCD and eInk, but the day may not be that far off when color eInk with a higher refresh rate could replace an iPad.
For me the eink devices will replace note taking and reading. If the Remarkable did Kindle books I would be satisfied. The Boox devices especially the Nova 2 would be great for my personal carry around device. Could do notes and read internet news as well as emails if I an out and about. The iPhone can do this too but the note taking sucks. I prefer to write rather than type.
My problem is that I am an inventor, scientist, and CEO of company. So I need the iPad for just general browsing, but trying to read academic journals, patents, scientific papers, it does not do it very well. And I need to mark them up and make notes about them, and send them to other people. The major problem is the software. So then I need to also take notes daily, and that is where the remarkable comes in, and I can carry it with me. It would be infinitely better if I could also use it as a diary to keep track of things I do during the day. So I use diaro on the iPad, but I must login into the internet to do that, and type out what I am recording, when I would just like to scribble a note. That is a pain so I do not accomplish this very much. Next, I need to read the journals, which both remarkable and iPad do not accomplish very well. However, it looks like the Max Lumi might do this if I can rotate the display to landscape, zoom in, and take notes with it. Maybe the layers might do this, but it would be nice to accomplish what Adobe reader does, let you take a note then have it disappear until you hoover over it, but be able to print that note out in a table at the end, and maybe bookmark them so you can go back to them. And it definitely needs to highlight the material and then add a note. But it would also be great to then share that real time with people so they can look at what you are doing in real time on their devices. That is probably where the Papyr comes in, but the software does not help with what I mentioned above. I know they are working on it, however I have been burned waiting for years for a company to update their software so that it is usuable. For instance, I had the first Samsung notes, the pen was great, but the software was terrible. I switched to mac for compatibility, and I am now back at the Samsung Note 10 because of its very good software and note taking and sharing abilities. I would love to use the Samsung Note 20 because of the DEX software and being able to use it for doing presentation by beaming to tvs and computers, but it is so expensive I probably will wait for the next gen to do another update. So that leaves me with either the Papyr or the Max Lumi, which I need both functions from. The Papyr scares me because of the promise of updating the software to be useable for what I need it for. You say they have great customer service, but who knows what they are working on and are going to release. They are not talking about it and just say trust us. I ordered the remarkable 2 and found out later that they were not shipping for 5 months after I ordered. And then they said September, and here I am and they still have not notified me of shipping, and I was just barely into batch 2 by a few people. I am wrestling with canceling it before shipment and maybe going with the Papyr and the Max Lumi. And unfortunately your reviews are pretty general, and you do not focus on just one aspect of it that people might want. Like, which one is best for just note taking and recording as a diary during the day. Which one is best at reading pdfs (which almost all scientific, medical, academic, journals are published in). Marking them up, and taking notes that you can use and then share with people. I know that you touch on it briefly, but it would be nice to approach it like an user that works with it day in and day out and needs to accomplish that particular task. Almost most of the pdfs that I mentioned above are double column, with small type and no room to make connotations on. It would be terrific to zoom into one column, in landscape mode, scroll through it to the next column, make notes on the sentences, and have the type in larger type to read ( a lot of use scientists and doctors are a bit older, or done a lot of reading that messed with our eyes) , have it take up 3/4 of the screen, and give us 1/4 screen to take notes that scrolls with the type, and then indexes it and bookmarks it, and then be able to print it out at the end. So I am stuck with deciding to wait for Papyr to update their software ( and who knows what they are going to update), Max Lumi for reading pdfs, but who knows how well that happens, and using the Remarkable for note taking, and the Ipad for general work and traveling to different conferences. When people ask what I recommend, I usually ask what they are going to use it for, and give them a frank honest opinion on the different problems with the different technologies out there, and the problem, which is major, with most companies customer service. They are not transparent about what they are doing or how they are going to update their software, and the general user just have to trust them, but that is a mistake, because they usually burn the user. Just look at Remarkable and how they promised the shipping dates. And I wrote them over ten times and never received an answer to recently, that promised it was going to be shipped to me about three weeks ago. That has come and gone.
GREAT Great comment - and understand your frustration which I think we all have. One thing I would suggest is go over to Voya’s page at MY DEEP GUIDE. One of the reasons I don’t get that deep into it is he does a great job. BUT I will be bringing more use cases, but these companies keep pumping out devices LOL - I am using the combination of iPad - RM 2 - Papyr and Kobo for my reading. I DO NOT do a lot of PDF reading. That is what I have asked the Papyr group to really work on as I think it would give them an advantage. I have been told they will be bringing split screen for the November release and some new functionality. But like you I am running a few companies and do this for a hobby. I just started videos to show some of what I do and then I started buying more as I am such a nerd. I know we haven’t had the device that just kills it.... but check out some of Voja’s videos also at My Deep Guide between the two styles you can get a pretty good feel. I am glad you commented. I am pretty new to this and working on getting better and doing more use cases, just need a little more time. AWESOME comment and thank you for taking the time to write it.
For me, the biggest need is being able to fit text from a standard 8.5 x 11 inch US paper on an e-ink device without scaling so it is basically 1:1 with paper documents. For many professionals like me, most documents I use are still formatted to fit that size. I want a device that lets me see exactly how it appears on paper when I write, edit or just review. I usually use my ipad pro right now because it fits almost perfectly but it isn't e-ink. The remarkable 1 and 2 are a couple inches too small plus they seem to lack bluetooth keyboard functionality. The primary thing holding me back from this, besides the black case color that should be changed to e-ink gray, is the price. It's almost as much as an iPad. If they could make it substantially cheaper it would be the perfect second device for me.
Great video! EBook and note taking is the most important function. Rm2 is the best note taking device. You can get better eBook experience on Lumi. If you only need one device,I think lumi is better. But the best choice is buy them both!
I feel that for you, as you've said, it won't fit very well into your workflow. However, not everyone (myself included) has the ability to purchase all these types of devices at the same time. For my purposes where I want to be able to read pdfs, take notes, do some drawing and sketches, at night, and on e-ink; I think it makes the most sense to get.
I can’t say if the BOOX Max Lumi is too good, but for what you’ll spend on the Lumi you can buy both the rM2 and the BOOX Note Air. So no more fence sitting. Commit to both.
Hey coach, I like your energy, positive thinking and ideas! But, perhaps the issue is perhaps not that the Lumi is to good, but that you have to many devices. I lust after the beautiful keyboard with the iPad, but do I really need it? Next to my MB pro and my pc ultrabook for work? I have the RM1 and in eager anticipation of the RM2. Also I wait for the Lumi I bought. I think the RM2 and the Lumi are excellent devices for my work (next to the ultrabook and IPad) and pleasure (MB pro). Perhaps the paypyr that appealed to me also is to good then for me. Rick
HAHA I love it - but you have a ton of them too - heheh I am just saying I use my iPad for most of the Lumi functions and the iPad is amazing at email, etc... BUT yes I think the LUMI can the iPad device. I really like it - just the iPad is light years as far as speed and usability. Not an Apple fan boy the screen is amazing, and the apps it just works. I would go MacBook Pro if I only had 1 - then MacBook and Ipad - Then What I use the MB, iPad, and RM2 is really an amazing combo. If Idropped the iPad and this is the key I think I would use my Laptop for email, web etc... over the LUMI - but it is a GREAT device FYI..... This is EXACTLY why I love the community and the channel great discussion, everyone has different use cases and fun. Maybe I need to do a video - IF I could only have 1. Or if I only had $500 to spend - thanks!!! Love your comment!
If this was compatible with Microsoft 365 then this would be just what I need. My work desk has a basic dual monitor P.C., and I have a laptop that I only use when on the go (rare). My iPad is super old - iPad mini 2. I’ve been looking for a way to get of decluttering my desk with access to Microsoft 365 to help me organize all my tasks and share them with my boss. I just got a standing desk so I use my laptop and iPad as a dual monitor through a 3rd party app. I bought remarkable 2 but returned it due to it being SO limited in functionality and technical glitches at that price point.
I’m a believer of too much is better than not enough. The clincher for me is the writing experience. If the Air Note can deliver on this then it will be a no brainer for me.
Thanks! I have the Onyx Poke for reading and it is great! Read Kobo, Kindle, etc and it is small and light. I need a note taking device and struggling to decide between Remarkable, Max 3 / Lumi, Note 2. I like to take notes when ali read so the Max 3 / Lumò could be all right but since I have the Poke 2 I rather not get another Android eInk device like the Max 3 (also feels very big to be carried) I was thinking about the Note 2 Air bit again I have the Poke 2 which I love. So still not decided. Maybe I will end up getting the Remarkable 1 or 2 for note taking and use it alongside the Poke 2 for notes taking...
Not everyone gets all devices from all manufacturers for review for free. If you don't have the place on your table for this device it doesn't mean everyone doesn't have it as well.
Hi JB, I'll have a look at some there videos of yours to double-check what you say about reMarkable note taking so I can see why you say it's better. I have the Max3, when the tip wears a bit, and you have a screen protector on it, it has a decent writing experience. I'm very happy with it. If I didn't get the Max 3 last year, I'd get the Lumi. I think it will have a good enough writing experience and everything else it does is just great. If one has both reMarkable & Lumi devices, maybe that's only when you get extra fussy, if you just have the Lumi, you might like that well enough for everything. I purposely don't have any other tablet because I didn't see them better than a laptop and phone, just an extra device in the middle that can't replace my laptop. So, my Max 3 fits that niche properly as definitely its own device that is worth getting over a phone and laptop as also paper replacement. If only it had a front light.....😁
Fisher it’s definitely acceptable I mean if I didn’t have the reMarkable it would be fine I think it’s a great device I don’t have any issues with it it’s just trying to do all those things that I don’t really need because of the iPad doesn’t fit for me that doesn’t mean it’s not a great fit for everybody in this dialogue is actually been really great in the comments today thanks for your points I love it. Like I said it’s an absolutely great device and I can’t wait to see the note air the Lumi just doesn’t fit for what I need it for I just don’t use it
I agree with you. It is a great device. It is a very versatile device having many 4star features but no any 5star killer feature. In that sense, reMarkable is uniquely well positioned creating a lunatic fandom. Your review is great. simple, clear, easy !
Great insights, but for those of us looking for a different use case - the "be all and end all" - device with the goal or retiring our ridiculous hoard of devices. I also have Ipad, four ereaders (three semi-retired), my Mac laptop, my Mac desktop, my Samsung Note phone... but my goal is precisely what you're pointing out - I do want to retire all that endless charging and maintainning of devices and to have one or two -- at most three -- devices that are easier on the eyes. Everyone's use case is different - I'm mainly writer/editor -- but it comes down to device overload and simplicity for me. Boox and as few other devices as I can...
If you do more text reading (e-books, e-mails, documents, blogs and websites, coding) and less multimedia (video, graphics, drawing, design) in your workflow then it's worth it. It's healthier for your eyes with an unmatched battery life. Also as an e-ink external monitor it has extra usability. The large screen is great for technical documentation like text books. If you don't read constantly in your workflow it is completely unnecessary.
You and your desk? It's awesome, but probably more diverse than typical. That's a great for a UA-cam channel and I rely on you playing with more stuff than necessary. But for folks who can't enjoy the variety of devices you do... who are only going to by one or two things... the Boox line is my recommendation for people who are shopping for an e-ink device. It's not an iPad killer, it doesn't need to be. It's the best if you want to add a front-lit e-ink device -- regardless of size. It IS the iPad of e-ink, and comes in multiple sizes with feature parity. As an Android based platform it's far more open than the iPad for reading formats. Whether you want small to giant, Onyx provides the same software/functional experience. If you just one one e-ink device to complement your technology, it can't be beat. Intentionally, I only have e-Ink for written input and as such Onyx has replaced both paper and other devices. Granted, I have two - the Nova for a portable e-reader and the Note for my desk notes. The Note replaces my legal pads, I don't need the max. I wish I had the need to justify the price, it's probably amazing :) I don't have an iPad because I'd probably just use it for games and go back to my Boox for work anyway.
Makes total sense - Onyx makes AMAZING products!!! I am anxious to get my Note AIr that MAY find a place on my desk. Thanks brother for sure..... so many choices today so awesome we even have these great devices :)
I agree it has too much functionality but at the end the day it’s going to be the best for textbooks and academic papers.
Love it 👍👍
What is Dex and how does it allow you to use our phone as a computer? Most i can see is a samsung function to drag n drop files. Thx.
@@gat251 The Boox Max Lumi has a build in app allow it to be used as an monitor via hdmi. So you get an e-ink monitor.
It should be noted that Google will not work with device at all now, saying 'This is not a certified device' and thus blocking accounts and everything on the play store.
Thanks for this - appreciate it!
Honestly I think it would be better for academic paper review, that's the only thing I can think of and I only need that from it.
Exactly.... And just the 2% of UA-cam viewers read academic journals anyways
I am a physicist and I bought it to read academic books with a lot of equations and to view research pdfs.
You don't wanna print out a 500-page textbook because that's expensive, heavy and not green.
exactly I brough only for it.
Alan that is one thing it gets great reviews for is music, people use a blue tooth foot switcher for the pages.
i'm planning on getting it for my upcoming return to school, will be taking on a master's and it's main purpose will be reading academic articles, PDFs, and textbooks; secondary purpose will be note-taking and i think i'm willing to accept an eink device that isn't the best note-taker as long as it's decent enough.
I was thinking about this purpose too
For me 10 most important characteristics of an note taking device are:
10 x natural hand writing feel without lag!
I only have a MacBook Pro. And I need a note take + note and highlight on PDF files.
Great point! I was also thinking why should I prefer Lumi over the iPad. The only edge Lumi has over iPad is that it has eInk. But other than that it is sub standard. Also, the form factor is not as good as 11 inch iPad Pro.
Clearly a market position that I cant figure out.
Quintus Horatius Flaccus valid point buddy! As I was wondering earlier- we are a generation spoiled by alternatives. I guess thats a good thing 😁
What is so fantastic about the rm writing experience that it makes up for the utter lack of features it has?🤔
Great content again! Had this video existed half a year ago I wouldn’t have bought laptop, ordered an iPad, preordered the RM2... would be perfect for my student needs!
Thanks so much 👍👍
I would rather have more features than not enough.
I feel the same. I’m waiting for rm to add shapes and lines. I think it would be a great addition to the writing software.
not to mention slipscreen, landscape view (or lefthand mode), etc.
Hello! Did you find a good case for the Onyx Boox Max Lumi?
Why not substituting the Rm2 with it?
Can you connect the Lumi as a second monitor and still write on it?
So that you can annotate PDFs that are on your Computer?
Yep 100 % makes sense 👍👍👍 great dialogue and comments 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
@@morningcoach you know how much I love your content! Gonna say it anyway, keep em coming and thanks man!!
Yes thanks so much and I’m just giving a bunch of use cases so I don’t have any preference or anything I want to make sure that comes across so this week will have some good videos I’m anxious to see the note air for sure
@@morningcoach you're the best! Can't wait for 10k and beyond. One day I'll be able to say "oh boy, I was part of the community way back when...😁)
@@cobeyguy5532 HAHAH If I don't make a bunch of people angry - :)
hi .. i want to order the boox max lumi . how can i order one to india ?
My needs are:
a) The best writing experience available (with the least amount of barriers as possible)
b) a good reading experience
c) ability to go online to read articles (newspapers etc...)
d) do calligraphy
c) draw/doodle
d) Price is always a factor.
The Onyx Lumi right now is on the top of my list as far as technical papers etc... can't beat it, especially if you live in that world already.
@@morningcoach seems the Lumi 2 is out for pre order next week. i almost bought the 1 yesterday. will hold out for the net gen.
@@BFree-bb8nh wow great catch thank you!
Its the perfect device for musicians - taking notes during rehearsals; using a bluetooth device for turning pages in concerts...
Is writing experience on Max Lumix better than Supernote A5X? I wonder why no one is talking about Supernote.
Thanks!!
Thanks JB. Cool on the Papyr. Is it as good as a remarkable, just a larger screen. Can you use a Lamy etc.. with it?
i am totally mixed up now, i had the remarkable and the remarkable 2 and i find both much too expensive for what they do (or better what i do with them).
@Ana and @Anja
Same here.
The thing I am wondering is: Since I already own a rM1, if I was to cancel my rM2 preorder, order the Boox instead and once it's here feel like "nah, not what I wanted", I could order the rM2 again - but to a higher price : /
The more I think about it, the harder a decision gets :D ... oof, I need someone to decide for me xD
Hi,
This is really a nice question.
Hi Juan, did you end up finding out about Mendeley on the Lumi? I'm diving in trying to find that info now
@@royalsexy hi, yes, i got it alive and working since December.
If I purchase the Max Lumi on Amazon it also includes the free set of accessories or I need to purchase cover, etc separately?
Seeing forward to the note air review. I hope its good enough to replace my remarkable2 order.
Me too can’t wait for that 👍👍
Allready replaced mine!

Hey Coach, love your videos. Your communication is really clear and on point, I enjoy that.
Don't know if you've made a video about this yet, but I'd love to know how to use these devices, ie. Remarkable+iPad or others wrt. maximizing your productivity.
Thanks!
Thanks so much on that - love the idea - keep them going!! Need ideas - thanks
Curious about your thoughts on that.
is the lumi's note taking experience so bad with respect to the remarkable 2?
Thank you and you also have a great safe day
I like the Lumi. I can only afford one e-ink note device and I needed the kindle app. I have an iPad which I use for other things. So far, I love it.
as always with these devices, it is a personal opinion. i cancelled my rm2 preorder after using lumi for 1 week now. it perfectly fits into my usecases/habits. i owned a rm1 for almost 2 years. as good as notetaking was i did miss a few features that are now found on lumi. notetaking on lumi is close to rm1. that is perfectly fine for me. if notetaking on lumi was more like the max 3, i am not sure if i would be happy with it.
Thank you for bringing up an important point. More features shouldn't be the deicing factor---more features don't mean better user experience. People need to think about how they'll be using the device (in combination with other devices they already own, if applicable). While I really like the idea of a large eink screen for reading and therefore am interested in Max Lumi, there is a big question mark for Onyx products wrt security and privacy, which most people do not discuss and take into account (but should).
there is big problem with reMarkable 2 : It runs linux not android, does not support Kindle .
Does Staedler pencil work on Onyx Lumi?
Yes it does :)
If it is not a good e-ink note taker and e-reader (combined), it will replace neither R2 nor other good e-readers out there.
...and im waiting for RM2 (Patch 7) - Im Notre sure that this is a good e-ink, I would like to have space around the PDF to make notes and a highlight that follow the text.
I've considered getting a Remarkable just for note taking, but I do enjoy good old graph paper in a 3 ring binder with my Pentel 207 :)
is the Remarkable the only one with no writing lag? Sucks that it's not good for reading...
No they are all really pretty good at writing it’s just a remarkable does it a little better than a lot of them but they’ve been at it and that’s especially notetaking
I have a Boox Max 2 and a HP Spectre 360 15", so I feel I don't need a tablet since I can use Max 2 and my computer as a tablet.
Is the writing experience the same as the boox note line. I have a note 2 I am loving it but would like the bigger screen would the experience be the same? Thanks
Yes it should be :)
Thanks again for this great video! I will keep using my IPad Pro for reading newspapers and magazines. But I will buy a Max Lumi as replacement for my Kobo ereader because I want a big screen for reading books. Greets from Belgium!
Excellent analysis, JB. Thank you. Which Kobo do you recommend?
Hey I am using the Forma it is a little expensive - but I literally read it every night one of my most used devices, getting ready to use it now - I hear the Libra is great too - I just like the size of the Forma it is like a book perfect.
please tell me does Onyx lag a lil bit in notetaking or drawing? Is it better than remarkable with that? Coz I want a replacement for my laptop and mobile except for videos. Is it worth?
I'm looking for a sunshine E- reader. My iPad is not good in the sun! But no, I'm not looking to replace it. Note Air looks more promising to me.
Lee I’m so anxious to get that one it is a very interesting device if it writes a little better than this it could be a killer device
This video was really good for me to know that what I want is the ReMarkable2.
And the Lumi 2 is out now, with a gyro and onenote enhancements. Will buy it for sure!
Im a beginner animator and dont have e ink / e notes device yet but my workflow atm is this:
1. Do calendar scheduling, flowcharts, storywriting, songwriting, storyboarding, sketching, all on paper (multiple notebooks). I do research on a browser while doing these stuff and use PC or phone for that.
2. I use android phone for communications only (chat, emails, video chat, voice chat) and consuming media on the go
3. Finish final work on my PC (consume media also here or on TV)
4. Review finished work on different devices (phone, tablet, PC, TV)
And I'm looking to get a Onyx Boox Max Lumi 2 (or Note Air 2, still deciding) to take all my work for #1 in my workflow.
Don't use it to replace a phone/laptop. Use it for reading, battery life longevity tasks.
Chipp, that is what I was kind of trying to come across. It is a GREAT device, but will I use it!! SO weird, LOL thanks man
And least if people think I am criticizing you, I am not.
Thanks.
It is a great device you’re gonna love it
Hey JB, I have been following your channel, excuse me, community for a while now.
Really great, thank you so much I appreciate all those thoughts and makes total sense
Thank you :)
Just a heads up, Xodo is not good for making notes on but then again I never write on documents and much prefer to use Bookmarks and Annotations. Call me anal but I value pristine documents, not a great fan of that vandalised look.
It works for one reason, it's size.
David, really great points - thanks so much..... perfect use case!
Great comment!!!!!!!! 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
I think the words you were looking for is, its a jack of all trades and a master of none." It does everything but its not the best at those things.
Re-frame the question by thinking "What if I owned NOTHING right now? Would it fit in somewhere?"
Think outside the box, this device isn't for on your desk. It is for reading pdf's when outside!
Makes total sense That’s why I said such a great device to me it’s like an iPad
Can it run Onenote?
Yes it can but I haven't tested it yet.... thanks
I can’t say if the BOOX Max Lumi is too good, but for what you’ll spend on the Lumi you can buy both the rM2 and the BOOX Note Air. So no more fence sitting. Commit to both.
Great point Roger!!!
@@morningcoach I took my own advice. I finally got off the fence. I’m in batch 7 for rM2 and I should receive Note Air this week.
Can you please support me and advise if I order from China is it ok and will it come intact ?
I buy my own devices with the money that I make on UA-cam…..
It is the best second in every category :)
I switched from batch 8 to batch 3!
Yes!!!!!!!!! Next 2 weeks then hopefully
@@morningcoach Boox Air is on the way and hopefully my money that was laying around at rM also ;p!
100% agree thanks for the comment!!
It is the best E-reader there is and a good note taker. If you don't want to have a lot of devises, you can't do better.
I want true color eink with 120Hz refresh rate too 🙈🙈🙈
Boy would that change everything
MorningCoach this is worth Apple to invest 1B in R&D :) vale la pena 🤞
Another thing I like but I don't need
If you do more text reading (e-books, e-mails, documents, blogs and websites, coding) and less multimedia (video, graphics, drawing, design) in your workflow then it's worth it. It's healthier for your eyes with an unmatched battery life. Also as an e-ink external monitor it has extra usability. The large screen is great for technical documentation like text books. If you don't read constantly in your workflow it is completely unnecessary.
Great points I think that was what I was trying to say and I love the comments so far
