- "The most clutch gamer alive." It was supposed to be a joke but somehow this happened- the first 4:55 in Super Mario Bros. and probably the last second-barrier that will ever be broken in this game. When I say "My FIRST run" in this video, I mean my first run ever to get past 1-2 on that pace. The 9 in the top corner of the timer was to keep track of how many attempts I'd done once I started going for the pipe clip in 1-2, so this was my 9th run since I started attempting that trick and my first run that got it successfully.
I can't believe this happened, but I'm very proud of this accomplishment :)

Q: How did you skip the flag coming down in 1-1, 4-1, and 8-3?
A: A very precise jump at the bottom of the flagpole makes the flag not come down. Someone by the name of Sockfolder figured out a somewhat consistent way for humans to do this. Watch this video for more information: • flagpole glitch
Q: Why did you not die when you touched the piranha plants?
A: This is an old game and a lot of the enemy hitboxes aren't in line with the enemy sprites. Look at this picture to see what i mean i.imgur.com/DpY0WaS.png
Q: How did you get inside the wall in 4-2? Why did the pipe take you to the warp zone? Aren't you supposed to climb the vine?
A: Very precise inputs make it possible to get inside the wall. This lets us change how close mario is to the right edge of the screen and tricks the game into sending you to the wrong place. I do a similar thing in the 3rd room of 8-4. For more info: • How is this speedrun p...
Q: What did you do at the flagpole in 8-2?
A: This is similar to the glitch I did in the other levels to skip the flagpole, but even better. Look at this picture for details: i.imgur.com/DpY0WaS.png
Q: How did you jump off the pipe in 8-4?
A: By jumping at a very precise spot on the pipe Mario will actually stand inside of the pipe for 1/60th of a second, and if you press the jump button during this period of time you will jump. More info on this image: i.imgur.com/DpY0WaS.png
Q: How did you not die to bowser's hammers?
A: Sometimes you simply jump through a gap in the hammers, and sometimes you actually go right through a hammer. This is because the game can't always handle having all those hammers on screen at once, so some of them don't have hitboxes.

Original comment: When I say "First run ever" I mean my first run that got past 1-2 on 4:55 pace. The 9 on the attempt counter is how many 4:55 pace attempts I'd done, soo yeah it only took 9... insane! I don't know how many total I've actually done, but it's probably upwards of 40,000.

Most of the difficulty of the game is getting the glitches, there’s a huge difference between how hard it is to get this run versus a run 2-3 seconds slower than it

Well, he did have a few mess ups, it could definitely be lowered to 4:54, but below a ~4:50 or so, that's we're you will need to find new optimizations

I heard that TAS and data from tng were roomies in the academy.
I've heard that TAS is not one person, but multiple persons. Everyone of them puts their time in different sections, perfecting the art of singleframe inputs, perfecting the route of their part. In the ultimate run, they use two controllers connected so that both can control the protagonist. Once one person finished their part they just hotswap the runner for the next part. It's comparable to splicing, but not handled as such since it is still the same run.
They call themselves TAS, because that stands for "Teamwork and Splices"

People need to get a run with L4-2 (which will probably happen vefore 2023), multiple fast accels in 8-4 and perfect turnaround and walljump (the last two arent insanly hard, but getting the fast accels are incredibly hard)

as you are a tas player, what's the best possible time you can get? And whats the best time a human can possibly get?
I haven't tried real-time speedruns yet (probably not my thing). Right now I'd say Kosmic's very closed to that best time, but some time can be saved in 8-4.
Happy Lee what about the best possible time any tas player can possibly get? Maybe there are glitches or skips that we have never found before. Remember, the limits are never where we think they are
The best time any TASer can possibly get is my TAS WR in 2010 - 4:57.31. Maybe you're right, but at least it's the known limit for over 8 years.

The only area that you can reasonably hope to see improved is a better 8-4. If you put the 8-4 in Kosmic's 4:56.462, which has the best 8-4 ever in a run, you get a 4:55.762. There is another framerule in 8-1 that has been saved by a human, but that's *much* too hard to be expected in a future run

4:54 is theoretically possible now with the extra 4-2 frame rule, and 8-1 frame rule. Hopefully this will happen one day! (heck, maybe we can find a way to save a frame rule on 8-2 as well, to match the TAS all the way to 8-4.

@@Beyondthe5thPanel For a MASSIVELY simplified synopsis, there are finite "blocks" of time that you can save in a level. If you finish a level in the middle of a "block", the game will actually delay loading until the end of that "block" before loading the next one.
In speedrunning terms, it means that you can't complete the game any faster by getting single frame improvements in each level. You actually have to find a single level where you can save a "block" of frames to make an improvement.
