Great video! I never knew there were so many difference in some, like the Animal Crossing version. You may be aware of this, but there are a few other versions of SMB1: 1. Super Mario Bros (PAL revision 1) - this was a revised version released on the NES in PAL countries (Europe and Oceania). The original release in the PAL region was the same as the American release, so the gameplay and music was 1/6th too slow. Aside from the gameplay and music being sped up to make up for the fact that PAL runs at 50Hz (they messed up with the music so it actually runs twice as fast though), you can also jump slightly higher. For example, take the mushroom/fire flower at the end of 2-1. In this version, you can hit the block with a running jump from the ground. Unfortunately, if you want to play this on real hardware, you will need a PAL NES and a 288p 50Hz-compatible display. 2. VS Super Mario Bros - this was released in arcades in 1986. It's mostly similar to the original. but replaces some levels with levels from SMB2j, in particular levels that were harder versions of earlier levels in the original (5-3, 5-4, 6-4, 7-2, 7-3). Maze solutions in 4-4 and 7-4 are different and powerups were moved, replaced or removed to make the game harder. For example, there is no longer a powerup at the start of 5-2, so you have to take on the Hammer Bro. without one (assuming you didn't start the level with one). Ending similar to SMB2j. Of course, real hardware here requires an arcade machine, but it is also available on Nintendo Switch. 3. All-Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. - released on Famicom Disk System in 1986. Replaces many characters and other sprites with new ones related to the All Night Nippon radio show. Also has new solutions to mazes and replaces repeated levels with levels from SMB2j. Some powerups moved, replaced or removed. Physics are the same as SMB2j, so you jump much higher off enemies. You can also play as Luigi with his SMB2j physics, which is a far better way of doing so than Super Luigi Bros. Multiplayer removed, same as SMB2j. After beating the game eight times, you unlock SMB2j worlds A-D. An original copy is extremely rare (only 3,000 copies made) but can be played on original hardware using FDSStick. Personally I've found these an interesting way to mix things up on repeat playthroughs of the game. Finally, though this doesn't truly count, five of the e-reader levels of Super Mario Advance 4 are SMB3 versions of SMB1 levels (1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-2). They're fun to play through in this way. It was absolutely delightful watching you play Super Mario Bros Deluxe on Game Boy Colour, because that was one of the first video games I ever owned! There are extra modes and stuff (you can race against Boo, which could be fun for a speed runner!), red coins to find, and secret Yoshis to rescue too! Could be a fun thing for you to mess around with ;)
Same! I grew up on that copy of the game (I was born only slightly too late to get an NES when it was new), so until a few years ago when I started practicing on Switch Online, that was *the* version of SMB that I knew. So nice to see SMB:Deluxe get some respect from streamers; I've literally never seen it in a video before today. Also, could be flawed memory, but I'm pretty sure I have pulled off power-up jumps on SMB:Deluxe; it's just way tighter on the timing for some reason that I don't understand.
omg, it was one of my earliest games too! i had it mixed up for super mario world cuz i was a kid who didn't know better, haha... still pretty fun though!
I did it last year and it was surprisingly easy. I think they must have toned it down? Only stage to give me trouble was the spring one because I couldn't see where I'd fall...
@@dacueba-games It's been so long that I can't remember if it was toned down or not, but probably now that you mention it. I played it when I was young. And yeah, the small size of the screen relative to the sprite size made a number of jumps blind.
Oh man, I did not know Speed Mario was a thing! I recently made my own NES emulator as a hobby project and I can hold down Shift or press U to make it play at unlocked framerates. On my laptop, that's about 125 fps, so this is basically playing SMB on my laptop with Shift held down. I've only beaten the first two levels like that, and that was only for fun. I didn't know there was a real version of the game built around that! Haha. Now I need to play for longer and see how far I can get.
A few other neat versions you should maybe check out: 1. Vs. Super Mario Bros. 2. All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. 3. Super Mario All-Stars on the Wii 4. Super Mario Bros. on the Game & Watch (the original, not the 35th anniversary version) 5. The European release (it has barely any changes, except for filling in a block in the underwater stages and moving the Koopas in 8-2 at the start) 6. Nintendo World Championships version 7. Masterpieces version in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Wii U 8. BS Super Mario Collection Week 1 (essentially the Lost Levels version with a world map, on the Sateliview) 9. Play-Choice 10 version (An additional arcade release) 10. It was possible to transfer Super Mario Bros. to the Game Boy Advance temporarily from Animal Crossing. I'm just putting this here because I can't find any tenth official Super Mario Bros. release. Another cool one is the fanmade Commodore 64 port, it's not official but it's very well made.

It's just now 2023. This was apparently the first video I watched in 2022. So, naturally, I thought I'd come back and start this year off with the same video! Happy new year, Kosmic!
it was very interesting to see you try SMB Deluxe on the game boy color for the first time. Indeed there are many differences and fixed glitches, but its still possible to do two classics: the walljump, and small fire. Would be interesting to see you go back to it at least one more time for the bonus content too 👀 Other suggestions: the SMB1 ports for the Genesis, Commodore 64 and PC Engine. They'll likely work much like the NES versions too
Seeing Speed Mario Bros. gameplay really makes me want to see the inputs from that game taken and applied to a normal speed version of the game. Adjusted for the slower speed of course. I'd be funny to see how long decisions actually took in real time.
That was a lot of fun! A note about the Game Boy Advance version: it's an emulated version of the original game. This means that, unlike the Super NES port, all the original tricks work as intended. The downside, as you probably guessed, is that they decided to crush 256 x 224 pixels into 240 x 160 pixels… which makes the game look a fright.
This was hilarious. And after seeing that 25th anniversary edition, never again will I ever let anyone get away with saying that Nintendo doesn't know how to go big when it comes to celebrating their achievements. That was amazing.
I remember never making any progress in speed Mario bros, but back in 2015 I got grounded for bringing my 3DS to school & it was one of the last games I played before that :(. Now I’m a bit older & recently got my hands on a snes for the first time! Made sure to get 3chip snes for 100% game compatibility & it came with Mario all stars so it’s cool to see all the differences it has compared to the original.
I don't think I could ever finish Super Luigi Bros just because unless I'm walljumping or dodging something I don't press left Edit: Also instead of Super Luigi Bros being a speedrunners nightmare I would argue Speed Mario Bros is way more of a nightmare but at the same time the only way to get an SMB1 world record even if it ain't legit

Alternate universe where Kosmic accidentally got a world record run on SMB 25th Anniversary and he couldn't upload it because it wasn't on the original game
The only game I’ve ever speedran is VVVVVV. They have a setting that flips the world top to bottom. But because you only move left/right, it’s literally the same inputs. But it screws you up SO BAD.
SMB Delux was actually my first experience playing Super Mario Bros. I would be so flabergasted seeing runs of the original SMB thinking the mechanics were so wonky. I had no idea that my version was very different and, in fact, much more difficult.
Nintendo should hire M2ª to do an SMB Definitive Edition. Include all the actually different versionsᵇ, with proper emulation of their differences (but also a version of SMBDX that shows the full screen, rather than a small portion of it) and all the extra stuff (like the challenge modes from SMB). ªHire M2 because M2 are actually *good* at this sort of thing ᵇBy "actually different" I mean "not emulated ports". The GBA "NES Classics" version is just the NES version emulated, but with the screen squashed, for instance. Of the ones in this video, definitely NES, All-Stars, SMBDX, Super Luigi Bros and Speed Mario Bros, at least...
Smb deluxe enemies are a lot slower becuase of the screen size i believe, like bullet bills would be hella more dangerous when you cant see them coming and they're going full speed
Hey, you should consider trying You VS. Boo in SMB Deluxe. It's basically a new mode designed around speedrunning, it's super fun and I think it'd be interesting to see you try it. :) If you need the points to unlock it, just go to world 5-1 and kick the first turtle shell through a bunch of enemies a bunch of times to rack up points.
theres something about being a kid as I was, experiencing this game and its new tech at the time in the early 80s that makes me appreciate it that much more.
The GBA version is actually a full NES emulator running on the console. The scaling from 240 to 160 vertical lines was done by just removing every 4th line and some cropping. Some sprites, especially letters and numbers were altered to accommodate this method.
There's a Game Genie code to make Mario jump higher, but to my disappointment it only affects jumping straight up. Since that Luigi game is just a rom hack of the original, then perhaps it has something to do with both type of jumps being completely separated code within the original game. Perhaps it was just a problem that the "interns" couldn't overcome without rewriting and or breaking the whole game.
the way you reacted to the gbc version reminds me of "dad joke" tier office pranks where all you'd really do is swap out all the yellow sticky note pads for blue ones x) as for the animal crossing version, the NES furniture items were obtainable through a handful of ways - e-reader cards, nintendo power passwords, and in-person distributions (you'd bring in your memory card/expansion pack) come to mind, but I can't recall which one SMB used. nookipedia almost certainly has the answer, haha animal crossing actually has a fully functioning NES emulator, too! you can load any nes/famicom/japanese nes disc system game through the memory card as long as you're willing to futz with some 30000iq github stuff. I do kinda wonder how the AC emulator would treat lost levels, but I can't do it myself - and besides, you're the streamer, not me 😛

12:35 i love playing old games cause who now would ever be excited about moving lava
I love these challenges where your skill/muscle memory and game knowledge actually play against you lol. Great video!
Seeing a professional Mario player get dunked on by Mario Bros Deluxe makes me feel less bad about sucking at this game as a kid, haha. I remember those specific hammer bros to this day. Nightmarish
I mean yeah, the screen is WAY too zoomed in, and Mario physics are tweaked.
Same, I remember getting stuck at those exact hammer bros forever as a kid. Still good memories of the game tho.
I am a pro at Super Mario Bros, and the Deluxe's screen was much to skinny and zoomed in to play effectively, making even the first level hard.
We're kindred spirits, one of my first games too!
omg, it was one of my earliest games too!
i had it mixed up for super mario world cuz i was a kid who didn't know better, haha...
still pretty fun though!
That was my first videogame ever, so much memories
There’s no Game Boy Colour.
When he said the last one was going to be "special", I expected him to play SMB Special, the Hudson version of SMB.
but that's not SMB1, that's an entirely different game
Now imagine beating Lost Levels in SMB: Deluxe. That's how I first beat both SMB1 and Lost Levels. I remember it taking a ridiculous amount of lives.
Thanks for confirming my harsh childhood growing up with having smb delux for gbc
13:23 "final boss" - an excellent edit... :D
Agree
you must be the type to take off mushrooms from your pizza seeing how you avoid them in this game
Mushrooms take up a few seconds, in speedrun time that is like 7 hours
A few other neat versions you should maybe check out:
1. Vs. Super Mario Bros.
2. All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.
3. Super Mario All-Stars on the Wii
4. Super Mario Bros. on the Game & Watch (the original, not the 35th anniversary version)
5. The European release (it has barely any changes, except for filling in a block in the underwater stages and moving the Koopas in 8-2 at the start)
6. Nintendo World Championships version
7. Masterpieces version in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Wii U
8. BS Super Mario Collection Week 1 (essentially the Lost Levels version with a world map, on the Sateliview)
9. Play-Choice 10 version (An additional arcade release)
Half of those are literally just emulators
@@PorcKop lol
The european release sounds epic
Problem with NWC SMB is the 50 coin limit and the overall hardcoded 6 minute timer
@@PorcKop not true
You and your creative ideas with speed running, good content though, always good content! and hope you had a awesome christmas!
I can't wait to get back to work and tell my coworkers! :D
Coworker: Hey, I hope you had a good holiday vacation, what have you been up to?
Me: It was great! I had so much fun! I've been watching some amazing SMB1 speedrunning :D
Coworker: dafuque?
Me: Yep :D
Coworker: riiiiiiight! I'll be waaaaay over there if you need me, see ya later.
Me: It was great catching up! We should do this again some time! :p
@@stylis666 there’s no 1.
There should be a variable speed running category, where you speedrun Super Mario Bros at any altered game speed you can handle.
Maybe that qualifies as tool assisted?
I assumed this would be like New super mario bros DS and stuff, but I was thoroughly fooled. 10 different actual SMB1's. Insane.
I'm surprised you didn't do one of the SMB1 remakes in Dreams on the PS4, some of those are SUPER hilarious
Those keep getting taken down by nintendo though
@@timbo303official9 lmao
@@timbo303official9 those damn Nintendo copyrights…
As someone who only played SMB deluxe on my Gameboy color, I feel so validated lol
I remember seeing that flickering of the GBA version while playing Phantasy Star 1 on GBA, too. I really wanted to play it back on the day (on an emulator), but it was so frustrating.
This video is exactly as advertised, which is insane in and of itself. The perfect clickbait, neither under or over delivering.
Last version was unrecognizable, amazing vid!!
Would be interesting to see you go back to it at least one more time for the bonus content too 👀
Other suggestions: the SMB1 ports for the Genesis, Commodore 64 and PC Engine. They'll likely work much like the NES versions too
This is the best version of kosmic. He's a much more natural commentator when he's enjoying himself this much.
Seeing Speed Mario Bros. gameplay really makes me want to see the inputs from that game taken and applied to a normal speed version of the game. Adjusted for the slower speed of course. I'd be funny to see how long decisions actually took in real time.
You could also slow the video to 0.5x for a similar effect
It really is just at 2x speed. That makes it a lot simpler to be honest.
That Speed Mario Bros one was nerve wracking! Also I was hoping for the Intelevision Speed Run for the game xD
Deluxe makes me so happy to see. Played it as a kid, and don't think I could ever beat it. Gives me some relief
I have read that the PAL version has some actual significant differences in collision and things!
if anything this shows how good you are at the game, your skills carried over
This was hilarious.
I don't think I could ever finish Super Luigi Bros just because unless I'm walljumping or dodging something I don't press left
Edit: Also instead of Super Luigi Bros being a speedrunners nightmare I would argue Speed Mario Bros is way more of a nightmare but at the same time the only way to get an SMB1 world record even if it ain't legit
22:50 - Makes me think of that "If Mario bros was an anime" thing. "THE TRUE MEANING OF LUIGI TIME!!!"
This is a LOT of runs and, despite the weirdness of some, I'm impressed with your versatility. Well done, man!
Hey Kosmic, I remember a while back you had streamed NES Remix to look at one of the challenges in there, would you ever consider going back to it? I think seeing an SMB speedrunner take on the challenges in that game would be fun to watch
yeah i feel like theres lots I can do with it. A lot of it is actually fairly optimized already... it's also a bit frustrating having to play on wacky version and 3ds hardware. Kingboo97 has some nice records on it
can you send a link to when he did this?
I think AndrewG did some runs of some of the challenges too, particularly the SMB1 ones
Also hi lol
8-3 on the Gameboy Color looks just as hard as I remember it being as a kid
Yo Kosmic,
it felt funny seeing you actually play Super Mario, instead of just zooming through everything!
Keep up the interesting content! :)
Super fun! If you ever do this again, why not give the Wario Ware Twisted!'s version of Super Mario Bros. a try?
This makes me realise how much I suck at speedrunning. I can’t even do the first level lol
*Pointcrow intensifies
What?
WHAT?
WHWHATAYATTTTATATT!!!!!!
Super Luigi going left really messed me up. LOL. Thanks for this video! I had no idea they had so many different versions of SMB!
First video of yours I've ever seen, loved it! :)
For some reason it's hilarious to me that of all the VC versions to have no input lag it was the one inside of another game lmao
Dude, running to the LEFT IS SO INSANE!
My favorite part is where you not only missed the mushroom in 1-2 in All Stars and Luigi, but ALSO in 25 😂

I was expecting Mari0 for the last game, an old indie SMB where Mario has a portal gun
Ohh, i still have it, i also have the last version of "Allesan99's entities" mod
Loved your SMB Deluxe casual playthrough, that game was my childhood, my version of SMB1 I played tons of and I'm glad to see a great player like you suffer through 8-3 and 8-4, I was literally stuck on those levels for years lol
In this video, Kosmic tragically fails at getting the mushroom powerup multiple times. Very fun video!
It’s incredible how you beat the game ten times under two hours.
I loved Super Mario Bros Deluxe as a kid but I do not remember the game looking like that LOL
Wow, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe brought me back. I’m pretty sure I had that game and it’s still hanging out at my parents’ house.
It's interesting to me that the only version that got updated graphics / sprites / sound was the SNES ' All Stars version. All the others used the exact same blocky 1985 graphics / sprites / sound.
Man I wish there was a version that had the content of SMB Deluxe, but with the graphics and resolution of the All-Stars version.
It's funny that my most played version of SMB is Deluxe on the GBC. I hope i still have it somewhere.
When he said the last one was gonna be something special i though he was gonna play super mario bros. Special for the PC-8801/Sharp X1
Staff: How much effort shall we invest in the 25th anniversary edition?
Iwata: No.
Nintendo should hire M2ª to do an SMB Definitive Edition. Include all the actually different versionsᵇ, with proper emulation of their differences (but also a version of SMBDX that shows the full screen, rather than a small portion of it) and all the extra stuff (like the challenge modes from SMB).
ªHire M2 because M2 are actually *good* at this sort of thing
ᵇBy "actually different" I mean "not emulated ports". The GBA "NES Classics" version is just the NES version emulated, but with the screen squashed, for instance. Of the ones in this video, definitely NES, All-Stars, SMBDX, Super Luigi Bros and Speed Mario Bros, at least...
This was wonderful. I loved how you kept it interesting even if most were the same. Thank you for the video.
Should’ve called this video “Kosmic misses the 1-2 mushroom”
Now you need to do all 10 simultaneously!
This challenge was awesome! I think a fun one to speed run would be playing every level in the SMM2 re-make world
Smb deluxe enemies are a lot slower becuase of the screen size i believe, like bullet bills would be hella more dangerous when you cant see them coming and they're going full speed
Hey, you should consider trying You VS. Boo in SMB Deluxe. It's basically a new mode designed around speedrunning, it's super fun and I think it'd be interesting to see you try it. :)
If you need the points to unlock it, just go to world 5-1 and kick the first turtle shell through a bunch of enemies a bunch of times to rack up points.
I jokingly thought it's all about luck to beat Speed Mario Bros in the past! Now, I know it's possible now!
This 10 SMB1s should be an actual category
next ... at the same time?
4:08 Hey! That's my strat! That's exactly how I kill hammer brothers and get mushrooms! Finally recognition for my pro strats!
:p
15:40 Rest in Peace Kosmic's foot
theres something about being a kid as I was, experiencing this game and its new tech at the time in the early 80s that makes me appreciate it that much more.
3:12 I hate to be that guy, but last time I checked that’s not 4-2
Yeh. Its 4-4
i say a lot of things slightly wrong like that while speedrunning lol
The GBA version is actually a full NES emulator running on the console. The scaling from 240 to 160 vertical lines was done by just removing every 4th line and some cropping. Some sprites, especially letters and numbers were altered to accommodate this method.
There's a Game Genie code to make Mario jump higher, but to my disappointment it only affects jumping straight up. Since that Luigi game is just a rom hack of the original, then perhaps it has something to do with both type of jumps being completely separated code within the original game. Perhaps it was just a problem that the "interns" couldn't overcome without rewriting and or breaking the whole game.
now you know the pain of speed mario bros lmao. ive tried beating it and cant do it so congrats on beating it
May I just say that I absolutely adore SNES All-Stars?!

"i played so well and here i am, small mario" has become one of my favorite quotes
the way you reacted to the gbc version reminds me of "dad joke" tier office pranks where all you'd really do is swap out all the yellow sticky note pads for blue ones x)
as for the animal crossing version, the NES furniture items were obtainable through a handful of ways - e-reader cards, nintendo power passwords, and in-person distributions (you'd bring in your memory card/expansion pack) come to mind, but I can't recall which one SMB used. nookipedia almost certainly has the answer, haha
animal crossing actually has a fully functioning NES emulator, too! you can load any nes/famicom/japanese nes disc system game through the memory card as long as you're willing to futz with some 30000iq github stuff. I do kinda wonder how the AC emulator would treat lost levels, but I can't do it myself - and besides, you're the streamer, not me 😛
So you're saying you could play Action 52 within Animal Crossing?
I'm like mostly aware of almost any version of this game but you were so excited about showing it that I loved the video lmao
