Hey Kosmic, what software do you use in this video to edit the levels? I already downloaded a few level editors a few years ago and the only one that seemed relatively good was detected as trojan horse by my antivirus, so I just threw all this crap in the garbage... If there is one that is good and not bundled with some malware I'd really like to try it.
Blue lava is also a thing in real life. I don't know the technical details, but from what I understand, it has something to do with the amount of sulfur and other elements in the volcano at the time it explodes.
Blue Lava is real btw. There is a volcano in Indonesia called Kawah Ijen (or Ijen Crater) which is infamous for its blue lava. This phenonenon occurs when a large amount of Sulphur conbusts when in contact with lava (the usual red ones) which creates this blue flames. Kawah Ijen is known for its large sulphur deposit which causes this to happen. Actual Blue Lava has to reach the temperature of abou 6.000 degree Celcius which seems to be a lot hotter than the natural red lava we usually know.
This is a cool idea and I love that you made different difficulty levels to meet a wider audience. Did you consider flying koopa bounces for levels like 3-2 and 5-1?
I made a level like this on Mario Maker 2. It was an exact copy of 1-1, but the floor was all made of spikes. Maybe it is just because Mario Maker has different physics than the original, but I recall only needing to make the invisible 1up block visible to make it beatable. If you went into the pipe on my version, you would just fall into spikes and die.
Simple idea turned into an amazing hack. It's crazy, but it reminds me of how some artists come up with a simple set of rules for a work of art, and stuff just seems to fall in place.
Just played the "easier" version and it was very good. The only I didn't like were the inside pipes midpoints where idk what to do, but it was a pretty nice challenge.

I find a little glitch in 1-2, where I get a checkpoint in a place that’s almost lava and you immediately die. The good part is that doing a precise jump just after you spawn you can actually get to the block, it’s actually funny and can be useful.
Watching this reminds me just how varied people's usage of Time truly is. And it also had to do with popularity, coin, connections, clout, crews, computer code, control, communities, and opportunities.
Hey Kosmic! Could you make a video explaining how the maze levels of SMB1 work? I'm curious about what goes on in the background to make them loop and whether they loop endlessly.
This reiminds me of the Portal 2 Backwards mod that one speedrunner made/there are different versions depending on weather you know the glitches or are just a casual player who does not need to remember every minute detail. A really good idea if you both want a challenge but also want a lot of people to be able to experience it.
I have just started to dabble with making my own Mario hacks myself. Haven't a clue on how to use the hack tools, but decided to go with a new cop style side scroller called the LawWonder Files. I did a few pallet changes so that Mario would look like my typical cop character. To be honest, I am quite clueless on level designs.
Thank you for your efforts Kosmic and all of those who worked on this hack. This was an interesting and cool way to keep Mario Bros fresh and different.
I find it incredible that people are still talking about and finding new ways to enjoy a game made 38 years ago. What game made this year would still be relevant 38 from now?
If Nintendo decides to release a Mario game this year, then probably that. Mario games in general tend to gather a large modding community, a large speedrunning community, lots of youtube content made about them, and all sorts of other things.
Id love to see you and top players make SM1 levels for each other. See how far you can really push it! Love that you had an easy version on this mod too for general audience
The screen edge wall jumps are so well known that I wouldn't have a problem with them in the "glitchless" version. I learned of that through world of mouth--specifically as the way to get on top of the stage in 4-2. I know people who thought that was why the breakable blocks were there at the start.
Kosmic, i just wanted to say i love your vids! you were the one that inspired me to buy an NES with the only game Super Mario Bros. you will get to 200K super soon! keep it up!
Great video! By the way, I think that you could’ve just replaced the now unused underwater tiles’ graphics (ground, coral) with the missing title card ‘L’ and ‘V’ corners.
Technically, under-lava stages should be impossible to swim in… because Mario would shoot to the surface as fast as the viscosity allowed, with no way to descend. Even liquid stone is a lot denser than a human body.
this is top tier content. I'm impressed, and now I'm curious about what other games someone might be able to feasibly do this on. SMB3? SMW? Mario64? Celeste?
I'll never play the hard mode, because I am quite unskilled at SMB1, but I love the idea. Now if only the NES had better palette hardware to make the lava red.
I made a The Floor is Lava stage like this [1-1without ground] in Mario Maker back in the day, it was possible in that version at least I also did a sequel, SMB3 1-1 without ground

Don’t lie, it’s about the flavor of Kool-Aid that God puts in the lava before it erupts.
From what I’ve seen online it seems to actually just be burning sulfur and not actually lava
4:32 That, sir, is a moustache, and a fine one at that.

Awesome project Kosmic. Your love for this game is contagious, I'll definitely be downloading this hack. Lots of work here, but it paid off. Bravo 👏
Awesome concept and execution. I especially like the decision for underwater, running in those stages is oddly satisfying. Well done!
So cool that you got Niftski and GTAce to test you romhack. Those wall jumps by Niftski were insane to get that powerup! Really cool video Kosmic!
I would love to see a speedrunning community form around this hack :]
I love how one of the stages has inverted platforms from normal. The creative decisions here work really well
Hey, that title is wrong, it should be "Can you beat Super Mario Bros. If the floor is Blue Lava?"
Blue lava is hotter than red or orange lava
It is sometimes red lava.
Blue lava is still lava, don’t discriminate.
