First Encounter With Alien Spaceship in Elite: Dangerous

- In a massive surprise a player encountered a mysterious alien vessel in Elite: Dangerous. There hadn't been any recent update to the game and the developers hadn't dropped any hints so this big news was initially treated with skepticism until Frontier confirmed it. I just had to go and find this for myself.

It's a weather balloon. Nothing to see here.
No dude. It's clearly swamp gas.
I thought it was light reflecting off Venus.
It was a weather balloon reflecting the light of Venus into a swamp gas cloud which cause the phenomenon :)
no its mustard gas dont touch it
U.S. government in a nutshell.
Interdicted during a jump and dropping with a complete system malfunction? I would shit my pants even without an alien encounter...
yeah i probably wouldn't be able to see the alien because my entire cockpit would be filled with shit.
Lmao!!
interdicted out of hyperspace no less, i don't play elite dangerous i wanna, but the DLC and everything is a little too expensive for me, but i do know a little bit, but can you get interdicted while in a hyperspace jump? cause if not that first encounter must've been fuckin' terrifying.
You only can get interdicted while in Supercruise.
That´s the reason why I would be so terrified ^^
well then that is certainly terrifying o.o;
I absolutely adore that the first player encounter with aliens was peaceful.
I'd hardly call being yanked out of hyperspace and probed with a blinding yellow light while movie trailer horns blare through your cockpit "peaceful"
well the encounter was sort of a man inspecting an ant hill... you dont know why (cuz youre an ant duh) but youre sure glad he didnt use the boot on you.
Brave SJ your definition of peaceful it's very...odd.
Well, I assume it was first contact for both sides. The alien see it's component or device zipping through space at FTL somehow, so it interdicts the object finding a human ship wrapped around it.
Sam this is first contact in the ED game, not the Elite universe. There was a whole war between humans and Thargoids in the time before this game. They are very aware of us.
The alien ship sounds are utterly fantastic
It sounds great, but why does it sound great?
Berelore, that sounds like the start of a Vsauce video.
Pardon me for interrupting you, but... SOUND! IN. SPACE. Pretty unscientific but still cool.
Дмитрий Кунченко The sound you hear is, by the game's lore, synthesized sounds made by a device within your oxygenated ship. When your windshield gets blown out, it even gets more difficult to hear it as the air runs out.
Oh! Thank you!
I don't even play Elite: Dangerous and I still think this is really cool.
I don't play it either. I wonder if my laptop could even run it.
What laptop do you have?
If you've got £600 spare and dont mind a desktop or if you usually play consoles (you're static anyway), then you can get a PC that will play this on Ultra at 60 FPS constant.
You could spend £300 on a right budget ass gaming PC and play it on Medium with like an RX 360 Graphics card and AMD FX6300 CPU, but it's down to preference and budget I suppose.
I have a hand-me-down laptop. HP pavilion g6 2228nr
Uck, I had an old Pavilion g6, it fell apart and always sounded like it was trying to break orbit whenever it was playing anything more demanding than a youtube video, you might be able to get it to run on lowest settings but it would probably still be kinda laggy whenever you have more than one object around you at a time
Haven't played ED for a little over 2 months and they introduce Aliens!!
Time to fire up the ol' baby and get out there.
+Holmesy87 you mean you haven't been getting the chrome eagle paint job or the riches from 17 Draconis?
There's a chrome Eagle paint job? =O
My cousin finally got Overwatch and we've been playing that all the time, damn him! xD
Scott Manley how do you make money from 17 Draconis? I haven't played for a while.
+Holmesy87 it was a reward for people who participated in a Christmas Community goal.

The good thing about scripted events is: I don't have to log in and find them for myself, it's the same thing if I just watch the video and it safes me a lot of time.
The bad thing about scripted events is: There's still nothing more to do for me in the game.
But imagen you wouldnt have saw this video on UA-cam and would have encountered it by yourself at some time without anyone telling you... haha ... sure the possibility of this happening is very rare, since .... internet! .... but just the imagination you would encounter it all by yourself would make me very exciting.
Oh look! You found the difference between a video game and a movie!
I've been thinking about buying this game for years but holding off until I get a VR headset. As I was watching this I thought I wish I hadn't watched it because of how cool and scary it would have been for it to happen randomly!
For most CMDRs, this event only happened "randomly" while they were actively trying to trigger it for hours. That's the problem with most of the random stuff in this game. Even randomness is a grind in Elite Dangerous.
ED has the best sound of all games
True, but the worst server cluster.
I was lucky enough to go to a talk hosted by one of the lead sound designers and the stuff they do to make this game sound great is amazing.
Chris Ward to bad rest of the game sucks
What server cluster, it is all peer to peer after you connect to the login server
"Friendship Drive Charging."
Holy shit, this game keeps getting better, I wish I wasnt poor AF in game and could afford decent ships, also I wish I wasnt poor AF IRL and could afford a vr headset, I will return to this game someday, the sound design and the game is so beautiful.
Cody Roberts Yeah bounty is what I used to do the most, I have a vulture wich used to be pretty good for that, way before the engineers, now with all that stuff is probably a bit outdated, never got one of the bigger ships, bounty leaves decent money to survive but nothing to really get rich unless you grind a lot, I tried my luck with some community goals and was able to get 5% in one some time ago, gaining around 20mil, that's probably all I got, I don't really remember, all my keybindings on my Xbox controller got reset in one of the updates and Im not able to configure it again for some reason, and the default doesn't seem natural to me, I really need to sit down and fiddle with it. Thanks for the offer tho, I might come back some day, that game keeps calling me back.
I was I was't poor as fuck and could afford a new PC so ED didn't blue screen for no reason whenever I launch it. I've unfortunately isolated it to degraded hardware.
Not sure how well it works now but before I stopped playing for a few months (work), I saved enough to get myself an Anaconda in like 20 hours of gameplay by doing long-range remote smuggling. Made real bank real fast.
Do i need a decent computer to play this game?
keloid long yeah I would describe it as decent, you dont need a top notch one but a pretty good one is required, specially if you want the horizons expansion, it gets a bit more demanding. I have a fx8350 and a 980ti, 16gb ram, and have no problems, I used to have an older card and it will run good enough on med/high, to give you an idea.
I'm curious about the first guy that saw the alien. to see something like that without expecting... damn, it should be mindblowing
That is a very nicely crafted encounter!
Frontier devs are doing some amazing work.
I'm calling it now: we're going to end up with a global war against an alien race/races purely because Americans shot at them first ._.
That kind of started as a joke in my mind, then I realised that is actually what I think will happen sometime after we make contact....
Alien hackers rigging our elections maybe?
So, aliens support conservative and anti-establishment values?
The aliens support Russia?
The aliens know Hillary would just nuke them?
Sked NEC. Its quite possible:)
That happened in the history of the Elite universe anyways. With the Thargoids. Although Americans don't exist in the 3000s (except for people from the American continents on Earth, I suppose).
Well to be fair its a videogame and shooting at them would be more fun than talking to them. We can already do all the peaceful stuff with every organisation in the bubble and adding peaceful aliums would add very little in terms of new and interesting gameplay.
Its time to bring out the bogey man so we can stomp all over it.
Kudos to E:D in how to introduce aliens.
The ad I got for this video was the documentary about underground nordic aliens. thanks Google
that sounds fucking lit tbh, what's the documentary called?
Cultist of Mars not sure, can't remember, it might be a discovery channel thing?
Gaia
Don't forget the part where they were discovered by Nazis!
wait...
there are ads on youtube?
Where's Shen and Vahlen when you need them?
Yeah, the whole alien encounter has a distinct 'Shadows' vibe
they are working on a way to get closer....
CLOSE RANGE???
WELCOME BACK COMMANDER
Who will tell us not to use explosives now?
Calm down there, Bradford.
6:25 for impatient people
The forced drop from hyperspace must be scary af in VR
I was thinking the same thing. The whole encounter must be intense in VR. I've played the game in VR, and it's one of the better games for sure in VR right now!
ObsidianAnt made an interesting little comparison at the end of his own video:
The alien ship is very similar in shape to the little stylized windmill/galaxy icon of GalNet.
Once again you nailed it Scott! I've seen Dr. Kay's and Obsidian Ant's encounter before and your approach was a blast! I subscribed your channel since KSP and it's worth it! For now on TRY to fly safe! :) Thanks!
Just watched it before you uploaded this! Winter is here!
THIS is exactly what ED has sorely needed.
I might actually start playing again because of this
Gotta say as much as i love your video, elite dangerous annoys me. im a big sci fi space sim fan but so much of this game is locked behind grind walls. im probably gonna miss out on all of these thargoid events because i dont have the spare time to spend breaking through all the grind. awesome video and probably the only way ill ever get to experience it since elite dangerous has lost all worth to me until they actually add new forms of game play other than grinding.
youre still awesome after all theses years ive been following you :) discorvered your channel with your EVE online videos (tuto's) a huge while back :D
This game continues to look and sound awesome. Finding your videos on this enjoyable as this kind of game always appeals to me until I've played for a while.
They most definitely have the best graphics, and sound design for a space game, but it's a shame the game-play doesn't match that.i keep seeing these things, and want to play it, but i know i'll get bored of the endless grind in an hour or two.
Cuz it's meant to be played as a simulator, not a game like an mmo that gives you things to do.
You make your own fun. Don't expect to be led around by the game.
The steam page, and their advertiseing pre-launch says differently, very misleading, myself and many others bought into it because that's exactly what they were (and are) selling it as. An MMO.
I don't need it to give me things to do, but when everything you CAN do is grinding numbers up (literally, all of them) or combat, that limits how much enjoyment you can get.
Tradeing, Smuggling, mineing, bounty hunting, Com goals, powerplay.
ALL of them, is litterally grinding for cash, or grinding for an arbitrary number, and incredibly tedious, not to mention, some are utterly worthless compared to others for money gain.
Combat gets boring after a while, because the AI becomes predictible, exploring is ok, but after a while, you've seen all the game has to offer, (like no mans sky, all proc gened)
In the end, theres not much to do in the massive pool of space.
Add to that, they haven't made any attempts to make the faction systems and background sim make sense, and be interesting, they all function the same, with different stats, they are facelesss, with no character represented aside from text.
Outside the visuals, it's a very, VERY bland game.
Same, it's a damn cool game with a lot of potential but right now we're just waiting, grinding, hoping for more content and updates. It'll be at least another month or 2 til we can interact some more with these aliens I bet.
Then I suppose you can just buy the game find an exploit, get billions of credits, play the game for 30-60 hours, throw it away and then complain about how the game gives you nothing to do. But hey, there's no grind any more.
Scott what will happen if you drop the artifact after you regain control of your ship! while the alien ship is still around
FlashFrags most likely: nothing
Boamere still worth a try tho! i understand its scripted but i wonder if the script keeps going on with certain interactions
FlashFrags it's already been tried. nothing happened.
Izual0Zephyr link?
Or dare i say shoot the UA while it is still on grid
I love how you narrate things great job
Hey Scott Awesome vid. I got a bit excited when I saw that E:D was coming to PS4.
That was amazing, goosebumps 100%
deploy the alien probe and scan it on the unknown warp zone see if something happens
I haven't had the chance to play Elite: Dangerous for a while now, so thanks for uploading this, Scott! :)
WOW! Man that is so COOL! Also the sounds are awesome as ever in Elite.
I watched the encounter part 6 times aleady. It's so awesome an mysterious. Scott probably got the best shots on youtube (Wish I could turn off the voiceover and just admire the sound effects).
E:D's sound design is amazing, and this just topped everything else in the game... so good.
i thought he meant in real life at first
the games name is in the video title.....
There's a link at one point in the video that lets you watch the encounter without his voiceover.
I couldn't find the link... would be awesome.
I'm jealous of the guy who encountered it first.
Why? , He probably ejected into space because of how quickly he shat himself.
I really want a game to make me do something like that :D
This is the first video I've seen where you actually get footage of the ship's sublight wake (not to be confused with the unknown wake that it left behind when it jumped into Witchspace). Very nice -- and very informative!
That's one seriously awesome looking alien ship! Here's to seeing more of it in the future!
you didn't put your thumbnail as the ancient aliens guy
+capnazrael he doesn't have an efficient hairstyle
suddenly the image of a bald ancient aliens guy terrifies me more than the aliens in the video
man that first encounter must have been crazy for that person. or anyone that saw it without knowing about it.
First person also had an Anaconda shooting at him. He had to make it come after him again to get good footage without the pirate shooting him during the clip.
it was CMDR DP Sayre
Just got into this. I'm back where i was when i was 13 with a copy of elite for the C64 on cassette (except this time i don't have to guess the keys and work it all out myself, especially the happy accident of finally docking) and not a clue where to go or what to do. Harmless and broke.
I look forward to this and more. Great vids. Cheers :)
This way of introducing aliens into the game is beyond awesome. Very impactful and stylish not only in the audio and visual department, but also by taking control away from the player and making you completely powerless and just making you observe the scout ship move about and scan you. Great video and narration too Scoot.
Yeah....yeah I do think I'm going to buy that Federal Corvette. Gonna need as many huge hard points as I can get...
manrightchea waaaaaaaaaaaaaaar
Afro Chill Dude I honestly think these ships are alive in some capacity, it definitely has organic aspects and the center does not really even look like a cockpit but like an eye..
I've been thinking the same thing. One day we're going to find one of the wrecked ships gone from their resting spots only to find in Galnet that Cannon has managed to ferry the wrecked specimen to Palin's research facility and began to dissect it, attempting to learn more about how the living-hell these things work.
Finally the Thargoids are here!
When the alien craft spins you out as it leaves, it almost looks like there is some sort of energy bubble around the ship that you skim off and it causes you to rotate. Love this new feature to the game, time to go out into the big black and experience it myself. Thanks Scott for the great video.
Was going to go back home after vacation and start up a massive KSP campaign.
I will now be going back to Elite after playing for all of ten minutes a few years back. Epic encounter!
3:30 Gotta love how players figure out how they can use the artifacts for terrorism.
I wonder if the lights on the ship are used for communicating maybe slow down the vid and time the bursts of light or morse idk
Good Start. PPL UPVOTE THIS ****!
@@nickspillman6275 I know this comment is old, but while I like where he was going with the Morse code idea, I don't think aliens would know about Morse code, since it's something we invented on earth. However, they might be able to communicate through light flashes using binary, since that's pretty much universal. In absence of any way to communicate properly since alien to human would be exponentially different and more difficult than say, translating English to Russian, since there'd be no common frames of reference. They'd have to do something super cool using the aforementioned binary using light flash patterns in a way sort of how the instructions for the golden record on the voyager probes work. From the JPL website- "Written around it in binary arithmetic is the correct time of one rotation of the record, 3.6 seconds, expressed in time units of 0,70 billionths of a second, the time period associated with a fundamental transition of the hydrogen atom.".. Like I said, super cool. Lol
damn Scott, that was pretty intense 3rd hand, I'm still grinning madly. what an amazing experience that must have been for the player that had the 1st encounter.. just wow!
I just wanted to to say thanks scott for getting me into this game. best year of playing games.
The issue with all of this is that you need DLC to have the scoop, and even if you have the DLC you have to grind hours and hours...
but this encounter is very very cool.
That is assuming that you need an unknown artifact to get the encounter, and that you need a corrosion-resistant cargo hold to transport the artifacts. I've heard rumors that some people have encountered them without carrying unknown artifacts, but if those aren't true, you can still carry them without the corrosion-resistant cargo hold.
But without the special cargo it will destroy your cargo right ?
You can use A lot of AFMU's to repair your cargo rack, which I reccommend if you're trying this. You might have to drop out and repair the cargo hatch though every so often, but as long as you jump in, align, scoop, it usually doesn't have enough time to damage you too badly.
That was the old method of transport.
omgcow Ok thanks man !
UA bombing?
This would have made the Burn Jita events even more entertaining.
For anyone that wants to skip to it 6:30
After it leaves that's pretty much that. He didn't scan it in time, and I think there isn't much you can do but get that short interaction.
Thanks for the video btw
Wow... wow.... holy wow... not played ED in a long time, not that much since the introduction of the engineers, this is just mind blowingly fantastic.
I really need to get back into this.
If your cargohold is the only corrosion resistant thing in the universe, why don't the stations that buy the toxic waste from you corrode?
He said they do at ua-cam.com/video/GqaIWtTCB1E/v-deo.htmlm24s
You would expect something with so much money (the stations that buy all the materials) would also have corrosion resistant holds as well, or the entire station made out of corrosion resistant metal or something.
Why didn't you shoot it!
+CMDR Luka Tomato because I'm a nice guy
Because he isn't American.
Because he isn't TRIGGERED.
+Drunken Monkey Kombat actually... I just became a US citizen today.
Ha! Then why didn't you shoot it?
That event is so well done, the ship design, the effects used and especially the sounds. It gave me goosebumps just watching. I can't imagine what it was like to see this as the first ever encounter. I think I would have screamed. Hats off to the devs who worked on this, they need some recognition. I need to do this in VR.
Interesting can’t wait to hop on this later on and see what new updates await me haven’t been on for like a year and a half
How can you stand playing this game when they nerfed all the payouts behind grind walls(cant even get to 15 mil, it took me 2 months to get 14)? I cant stand the game now, it's been a few months since I've touched it... God I hate grinding... BOTH kinds. They're dumb.
+Dark Shift Music without abusing game mechanics I made a 5million in 2hours in a war zone this morning. With abusing game mechanics.... over 50million per hour.
Scott Manley It's the god Scott himself! You made 5mil just by shooting random people in a warzone for a few hours?! I seem to have chosen the wrong line of work. Also, abusing the game mechanics? I'd like to know more about how to do that! Maybe I should wipe off the old X55 after all. :D
+Dark Shift Music war zone is easy, just go to a high intensity zone that spawns a capital
Ship, choose the faction that owns the ship and stay close to it. Murderous firepower of ship + support will keep you safe. Regularly leave to cash in combat bonds.
Game mechanic abuse -go and read about 17 draconis massacre mission stacking.
Scott Manley Hey Scott, thanks for the help but I've been trying to do these combat zones for like 4 hours now and I'm down 3mil from death and refitting. Can you link your ship fit or something? I found a zone that spawned a capital ship but I kept dying. The first run I had was promising, I netted about 100k in 15 minutes and ran out of ammo. I tried to refit with gear I thought was better but then it just went downhill from there...
+Dark Shift Music don't go in with an expensive ship, use something light and fast, you just need to get enough hits on a target so you get the bounty. Also power management is hella important always, lots of people don't realize that 4pips in shields makes you massively stronger against damage.
F..K this is epic dude!!! Very few games offer what you just uploaded. WOW
this is amazing! I watched the original video and it's still impressive!
really takes me back to the Reapers from ME, with the whole opressive and helpless feel to it. very real props to sound team; too often sound designers have their job overlooked.
Wow I might actually start playing this game again haven't played in like a year.
Great Video. THX
I got pulled today "unintentionally". I was heading to Merope to pick up a unit of meta alloy for Felicity Farseer, I had a bunch of Ancient items in my hold at the time as I had been attempting the riddle of the ancient ruins, although I doubt that had anything to do with my interdiction. ObsidianAnt mentioned in one of his videos that the event seems to happen on rout to the Maia region, closer to the human bubble. I had previously attempted to trigger this event without success by jumping around that region randomly (with both UAs & UPs in my hold). I think it has less to do with whats in your hold, and more to do with where (and how far) you're coming from, as I was on a 600is LY rout at the time. Either way, this is exciting news for E:D both in-game and IRL, can't wait to see how this unfolds.
Glad you survived the probing! Looks like they turned away from Uranus.
Fly safe, and with your backside securely strapped in the pilot's seat🔒
that entire scenario was amazing, the way its all aniamted and visualised omfg i need this game
This is fucking genius, I love space and the absolute terror that comes with the unknown, this worked so well, I felt chills when the music and sounds, the sound guys deserve fucking medals
This gave me goosebumps. Oh man, loving this! I wonder what they will do next. In this video it just seems like they were scanning you and saw you had their artifact on board and didn't attack because of that..just a theory.
Nostalgia = remember playing Elite back in 1987 (MSX 1.0 home computer)
Yo, Scott! That alien FSD is just like a Capital Class FSD. Same warping wake and similar sounds!
I didn't know you could get out of your ship!!?? I might be picking this game up now. Thanks!
The sound is amazing. Don't play this for a while, time to go back.
Impressive work that the devs have done on sound and visuals. As a sim the scale seems to work in favor of that end so one would assume going in with an action oriented approach would quickly turn off those with little patience. Color me intrigued.
Got an ad for a Hollow Earth Documentary. Perfect.
Goddamn. I like how the music builds up so much when the ship is turning around and then stops when it plays it's horn.
One of the scenes looked like a throwback to the original Elite's witchspace disturbances.
literally the most incredible depiction of alien contact I've ever seen in both movies and games 😨 mind blowing
Hi Scott - If I may Witch Space wan't distinct from Hyperspace in the original Elite - it was Elite's term for it.
From the Elite Manual
Thargoid battle-cruisers believed to be able to "hover" in Witch-Space (hyperspace) and destroy through-coming craft).
Edit When I first got Elite I had the Acorn Electron cassette version - which unfortunately didn't feature Thargoids.
I just love how beautiful this game is. It had such cool concepts.
Man, I've finally got a reason to start up E:D again. Sweet!
I remember the first time I jumped to hyperspace, not knowing what I was doing, and how terrified I was when I came upon that first star seemingly too fast... I can only imagine what dealing with this encounter was like without prior knowledge. It must have been breathtaking!!
Another great one.
Find data of wake look though code and try to find patterns, compare to available cryptography known on the web. Maybe we can find coordinate there? Or does this game not work that way?
I think it's trying to lead you to its home planet! That would be so cool!! I think you have to follow it somehow and find its planet and then start a mission of some kind. Maybe the creature is under threat and needs your help to defeat some other bad aliens which is why it didn't attack you. So cool! Will definitely pick up this game next time it goes on sale. I completely forgot about it during the Winter Sales such a shame! Ah well. Really hyped to find out what happened!!
This video officially made me want this game.
That thing looks so cool. In Elite these motherships released up to 8 thargon fighters. You had to pick them of before they spread out and cut you to pieces.
As per the norm for Elite, the sound effects are amazing, that was awesome.
This si very reminescent of the scene from babylon 5 when they first encounter the walker of Sigma 957.
Watching Scott's videos make me want to play elite again
This is super cool! A touch with the unknown!
Holy crap that looks awesome, I'm going to try that this weekend
I'm just so excited for this
For someone who is on PS4 and still waiting for a set release date I am so hyped to see what the next Thargoid discovery is. I heard of ED some time early 2016 and took no notice of it but one day I decided to take a look and I instantly became hooked to it and have followed recent discoveries from players and their stories of their experiences in the game and it sounds like an amazing game. So I got extremely hyped when I heard that the new trailer for the game included the fact that it would soon come to PlayStation and I've been waiting ever since for a set date. Yeah I know that the PC version is probably a lot better in looks and content but tbh just as long as I get to experience ED on my PS4 I will be fine. No need for me to buy a PC yet
There is footage as they charge to do their version of hyperspace jumping their ship and it's i guess tendrils could call them start spinning around.
Came across a station on ps4 that was shutdown due to an artifact. I was super curious. Thanks for clearing that up!
this game looks awesome I will be looking into getting in soon. what do you do in the game for regular play????
A shame there isn't more than a single cutscene yet. I like the mixture of deep sounds similar to the dark of the moon trailers with a ship design similar to the Nephilim in WC5. Very well done.
You have to align with your target before you jump to another system right? I wonder if it would be possible for multiple players to make a note of the trajectory and pinpoint the vague region they're jumping to? (Assuming it's the same every time, it might not be)
"people have fired upon the aliens" I'm pretty sure that was the first thing some people tried to do
Makes me want to get back into the game. Bought the rift recently so might need to re-figure out the controller bindings.
Thats really really cool mate.
