Be prepared for very boring repetitive grinding before you get the "system permit" to enter the Solar system. I falled into that trap myself, thought I would get the game to explore freely. It's the most boring game I ever played. Also called Elite Grinderous.

It's not really a game. It's more of a space simulator set a thousand years from now. There is no real goal other than to live a life in this universe. As many people have said it's a vast game but it's only a foot deep and that's true. If you are looking for a traditional game with goals and progression you will be frustrated but if you can make up your own fantasy and your own direction it's an amazing place to hang out. Also it is the number one reason to buy a rift or a vive. In VR this looks stunning and the immersion can be scary. Don't believe me? just drop out on a neutron star too close and at speed or run out of fuel in deep space. There's no dropping back to your last save. Lose your ship and you've got to buy a replacement with the insurance policy. You will lose all your cargo and if you don't have the money too bad, you'll permanently lose your ship. People either love ED or hate it. I'm very firmly in the former camp. Oh yeah if you do get involved with ED get a HOTAS immediately.

Question, Is this Elite a modern version of the game I used to play on my BBC Micro back in the early eighties? I haven't really followed games since back then, but its cool to know the legacy of those days is still a thing.

@@RGChandler Welcome. It's easy to start, but the universe is larger and more complex than the original. Go in blind for the wow effect and then check out a tutorial or two from youtube. To get really into it, i'd recommend a good joystick with a throttle.
it is of course more epic than the original and can at times seem overwhelming. if you dont have time to play what id class as a virtual reality space game then you can also try Oolite, created by fans of the original elite, and you can reminisce the old style for free at www.oolite.org/ (i play both as i have too much time these days) ;)

Really need to start playing ED again. Been about a year since I fired it up. Only play in VR though. Can't go back to 2d.

Now I want to play elite dangerous.... I’ve had my eye on it for a while, but cruising around the solar system seems so serene and fun at the same time.
You will be grinding A LOT before cruising around the Solar system as it requires a "system permit". I had the same hope as you until I bought the game and was faced with the most boring, repetitive storyless gameplay ever. Stopped playing and uninstalled over a year ago.
@@DanSlotea Took me a few hours to get the sol permit...now have 2300 hours ingame and when the new updates comes in and new exploration im ready for another 2000 hours.

@@MrShadowfax42 some people like story-rich games, or at least games with a purpose and need to be warned about the grinding before paying money for Elite. Unless you are a Fuel Rat, if you like repetitive missions, stars and planets "procedurally generated" that look all the same, have fun that way, sure. There is no "reasoning" to be had. I'll stick to story-rich single player, you stick to endless multiplayer grinding. It's that simple. "Reasoning" hahahah

Ugh. Charon... Theres a crashed ship on Charon, that is an absolute beast to get to. It's way up in the mountains, the closest I could park my cutter was 6km away, and took an hour to find a spot to land. Then the terrain is so ridiculously shaped it took 45 minutes to drive to the site. Got some goodies then it took another hour to find a place to recall my ship where I could get the SRV back into it. If you go after that crashed ship, take the smallest ship you can fit an SRV in. You may be able to land within a click and not have to struggle through mountain range after mountain range to get to it.
Let's just hope there's a mass effect relay buried somewhere in Charon.
I don't think that would be good for the long run... Even if mass manipulation would be such a great technology, the Reapers will destroy us all.

@@TheMXMach Except ED already use superior technology. Gravity engine basically allow them override laws of orbital mechanic. Mass manipulation is only bending it.

You might. Everyone in my gaming group thinks it's jus a reference, but I'll ask around and see if they think if it's actually in there. The general consensus is that it's just the beacon and nothing else.

People critisise fdev all the time, but when you visit the Voyager probes and New Horizons, you realise what the people who made this game have achieved, and it's astounding.
Yes, I've played Elite for 18 months (though currently taking a hiatus from it) and thats the first time I heard some of the recordings from Voyager in it, and it was quite humbling and moving to hear. Nice touch from the devs.

Epsilon Eridani 3 is in the game, IS a desert planet and has a blue colored space station in orbit, so as close to having B5 in this game as you can get. I'm actually stationed out there for that reason.

Interesting to see that FDEV made their own recordings to simulate the greetings on the Voyager Golden Record, even though the original material is publicly available. Copyright issues, or the wish to make it sound clearer than the original recordings do?

This game is so underappreciated because people get sucked into the grind and forget about the beauty.
I guess the Gaia mission will add a lot of stars to the game universe in the future then.
No doubt frontier development can't just plug them in willy nilly as the universe simulator is one of the most complex parts of the game. Hope we get all the planets from kepler and stars from gaia some day.

I stopped playing Elite about 2 years ago, shortly after Engineers update... but after watching this I so want to go back.
They are currently in beta for a new chapter which should be released by the end of the month that fundamentally changes quite a few game mechanics, including exploration, mining and squadrons. I'm out of it myself currently catching up on other games I've bought but not got round to playing, but will return to Elite soon. It may be worth another look for you too.
Scott, what do you think about the new exploration features in the Elite Dangerous chapter 4 beta?
Did you ever try Elite in VR (eg. Oculus Rift)? It's gorgeous and immersive in VR! A whole new experience.
Is this in beta? You need to try the new exploration mechanics which is a vast improvement! Give it a try if you have the time. I think FDEV is progressing in the right direction now. Great vid Scott!

I wonder if the new FSS system will show the Sol probes as points of interest, instead of having to fly to them... might have to have a fly out there.

I wish there were more to discuss/watch. Also haven't seen any new videos from Amy. I guess after a while space seems kind of repetitive but then again there are all these interesting little bits and things like that happen and are worked on and done very well though out and procedurally.
They really could update planet textures a bit. The samy Gas giants often look very unreal.
The added a bit moe diversity to landable planets but could do more there as well.

There are ringed stars in Elite, yes. Don't see why in the real universe those couldn't exist either.

Only played Elite a little when it was launched, don’t remember it looking this good!
In the latest chapter which is currently in beta (and which Scott isn't playing here), they have updated the lighting and colour gradients and it will make this look even better once launched. The sound design for me is its triumph though, it really is stunning.

Around 23 Scott M indicates how the drop in star intensity indicates a planet. What if the planet circles 90 degrees with respect to our observation? I assume we can only detect planets that are directly between Kepler and the star? Is that true?

I do hope we can at least get a space elevator in my lifetime. If we are going to be doing some Interstellar stuff, I'd think that would be a solid foundation.

I've been a fan of Zubrin's since the 90's and his book 'the case for mars'. It was not only a great plan, but very enlightening on the travails of space travel. NASA should have read it.
If you like the different languages when meeting voyager 1, you can get different in cab languages for your computer in the game

Voyager 1,2 and Far Horizons will be easy to find when 3.3 goes live 'cos they show up in the newfangled FSS so you can head straight for 'em.
I believe Voyager 2 was the first spacecraft to leave the heliosphere.

EDIT: Interestingly enough the NASA website doesn't list a message in Afrikaans as being on the Voyager Golden Record, from which you can conclude that either their list is incomplete or that FDEV rerecorded the messages and went a bit further in language inclusion. And yes, in the case it is not Afrikaans (and I can assure you it is), there isn't another Dutch approximate listed either.
EDIT 2: FDEV made their own recordings. There's different languages, better sound quality, and recordings done by other sexes than the originals.

What sort of mechanics / space craft would be needed to get in to orbit round Pluto, I mean are we talking having to turn round and hit break engines halfway there... nearly there.. ? Also explanation of the difficulty to do the same with the sun from earth
Simplest solution: play Kerbal, learn some basic orbital mechanics and discover the answer yourself.

VOYAGER - how easily can you find it Scott? I’ve been out 3 times looking for them, unsuccessfully, if you know how ago find them perhaps put up a video on how? Thanks. Liked this video a lot and saw the twitch nasa one too, I think you impressed them with Elite and that engineer chap seemed very interested, I’d bet he went away and bought it, he especially seemed keen on the VR aspect.

It might be more expensive in ∆v, but what if you used the moon station as a refueling point? Using fuel that has been derived from the moon itself? Wouldn't it be cheaper in $$ even if it's more expensive in ∆v, given that moving that fuel off the moon would be much much cheaper than off the Earth? Or better yet, moving that fuel from the moon to LEO, using that moon station as a in between depot for it? Know of anyone who has done the math on all that?

Skybox is generated dynamically for each star system, so you can see constellations change

The boiling creates gas pressure that eventually is released and creates a sudden turbulent acceleration to the ejecta/fluid flow resulting in a jet of that gas and generally ~100deg C water heavily contaminated with volatiles/geochemist that are characteristic of a given region of the planet and what type of exotic life is found near its surface, (such as thermophiles in Iceland, and a massive biodiversity in some instances around these types of active hot springs (where rings of different microbiota give a rainbow-like appearance to the aqueous interface in some of the locations where geysers are prominent geological feature sets- outside that single sample not too far outside Reykjavik in Iceland. from the lower strata of the earths geological strata where depths or other geologic forces are at work -constant plate movement and so on which actually heats the entire island of iceland providng its residents with completely renewable energy resources and more than ample amounts for them to not need to pay for central heating, nor much for electricity despite the climate of the nation being anything but static. the heating of the island from below melts surface glaciers and snow which then is used to provide the remaining power in hydroelectric utility sites. They have an island that is naturally set up for the "hydrogen economy" as in situ production could and has been done at each petrol station during the era of hype around hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles, especially with the heavy taxes in the nation on gas, and the more recent price jumps at the tank, which set people to the point of making sales in the nation on fuel cell vehicles which are in the best case of Hydrogen- only 80% effective at conversion of potential chemical energy of the electrolytic cells to electricity which then is used to do the kinetic work of running 2-4 electric engines in a similar manner to an electric vehicle if it could be simply refueled, rather than charged, though the trade-off is a bit large seeing as the efficiency of the fuel cell makes a lithium-ion battery more attractive when the cost of electricity in the nation is extremely low now that such battery tech if not for its relative mass manufacturing deficits in recent US Cars like $TSLA. Fuel cells themselves if energy for water splitting reactions are not a problem, or bypassed as they are able to get away with in Iceland due to ISRU in many places or driving the water-splitting reaction with the abundance of energy resources on the island are much easier to understand and construct. They would essentially be using the same components in many proposals that the electric cars of modernity use, but replacing that complex battery, -the fuel cell has a history tied really with that of manned space flight- that really started going in the early space race era as per a use. These days they still find use cases in such regions even though if you are in the US you have no infrastructure to support the H2 economy- therefore hear little of it outside the realm of manned space vehicles in which they still have a safety margin that allows them to find use cases over lithium-ion batteries due to the complexities involved in constructing cylindrical variants of such systems that have theoretically lower fire risk, but are not time-tested. Most in the US were left with a bad taste after the Samsung note problem that had their preferred device banned from air flight use due to the several cases of fire and explosive damage in the Note series device (I had my intl Galaxy s6 at the time seized by the not bright authorities aboard an aircraft that I was trying to listen to audiobooks from during transit between two locations in that 2017 time period as the airline personnel could not tell the difference- assuming if it said 'Samsung' it meant "explosive") and found its way from those electronics to more recent patents of apple for its devices as a potential battery supplanting tech.
Fuel cells in space flight would actually make a interesting video if you haven't already touched on it- especially as most people have only heard of them in the context of purposefully disabling the fuel cells that were not of those that are used by the public in most situations or power the massive warehouses of modernity in forklift fuel cell power (where the use is widespread of modern hydrogen/PEM Fuel cells as a source of power), but the variety in the Apollo 13 incident where the unique reaction valve system permitted a leak of O2 from the debilitated system to pass through one of the three fuel cells (making the rate of O2 loss unacceptable without closing the valve and thus shutting down the Fuel Cell, canning a fair amount of the power supply in the process [due to the unique type and use case of the fuel cells used in the Apollo program] where O2 was in the loop of the electrochemical cells.

I haven't played Elite in probably a year so I don't really know what's been going on. I also never really figured out how to get a permit to go to Sol... I might have to fire that up again soon.
Need to get a decent rank with the Federation, then you get it. I've been out the game for a few months myself, but this latest chapter in beta now has some fantastic additions. I'll be returning to it soon too.
Just looked at changes in velocity, there are probably hell of a lot of gees. thousands gees.
Even out of frameshift, which is basically the game's FTL system, you can pull so many Gs by simply pressing the boost button. A fully decked out Imperial Cutter can pull something like 13 Gs just by boosting forward, it's insane. It's actually 8 times as powerful as the Saturn V.

I don't think I would like to have a nice drive on Europa, knowing how it is pretty much inside Jupiter's Van Allen belts lol.
Problem with elite is it does not handle non-round objects in its procedural generation at all. Even in sol you wont find a accurate Haumea or any such dwarf/planetoid. Infact its been known to "glitch" in alot of systems ignoring the roche limit well beyond rational bounds (as such that planets are physically touching without effect.)

i don't think o'neill cylinders can only exist in a video game, as you state around the 8ish minute mark - we just lack the technology to build them right now.

About the pronunciation of the word "geyser," in the US the word gy-sur would describe steam/fluids venting out of a hole in the surface as you showed with Enceladus. Gee-zer, spelled g-e-e-z-e-r, is a older person not in tune with the times and stuck in their own ways - usually seeing things only their way as right. They are also inflexible about new things and do not speak well of younger folk, (you noticed I gave almost the same definition three times, which is exactly how a geezer would say something--telling you three different times what they could say just once to make sure you understood them!)
"Geyser" Is derived from old Norse. There is only one hot spring in the world named "Geysir". It is located in southwest Iceland, and gave his name to all other hot springs in the world. Needless to say, it annoys me greatly when people call any other hot spring "Geyser". It is the same as calling any tablet PC an Ipad, or any 4x4 vehicle a Jeep.

So according to Wikipedia, it's a dutch recording before the German one, but in this video the recording definitely was Afrikaans and it didn't say exactly what Wikipedia said it said. Is Wikipedia wrong or did the game make their own sound bite?
The dude in the video clearly said "wens" which is a word that is spelled the same in dutch and afrikaans, but it isn't referenced in the wiki page at all.

FDev seems to have made an own recording for having better sound quality... and this is just my guess, but for licensing reasons probably too.

"Gezer" is the way you pronouce the name of the geyser in Iceland called "The Great Geysir", the object we get the name geyser from. In normal English its latinized as guyser
