It would be interesting if we actually had things moving around. That would really throw you off. You'd keep getting distorted scans of things you end up phasing through. In fact, someone could exploit this, and throw things in the air that essentially make you blind again because of all of the scans just being a thick fog of lidar noise. Even better: mirrors. Someone could pretend to be your reflection, and you'd have to realise that something's off and send them astray so you can go to the other side. You could also reset your scans and do new scans, and switch between different scans you did to see what changed. Another fun thing: lidar interference. You could end up being seen as one metre west of where you actually are, and move around as though you're playing a third-person game in VR. And once you continue scanning, you'll get a double-image of everything. Actually, it could also have a constant offset, making the environment leave a lidar trail whenever you scan. Another useful thing there might be a temporal record of when every point was scanned, so you can know how long it's been since you scanned different parts. So many possibilities!

I actually like the simplicity of this game, yeah its a little short but the way it has such a simple directive, mostly self propelled and interpreted, it adds to the horror aspect. You're left alone in the dark to your own devices and have to discover the threat(s) yourself is a very realistic take on a real life situation as opposed to a scripted movie/game. I'm only confused by the humanoid figures that trip you up paired with the multi-eyed gears, not sure what they're supposed to signify if there's even significance to them. Only thing I can think of is maybe the original biblical angels maybe? Or some type of evolved steampunk monster? Would love to know for sure.

    • @QuantumWaltz
      @QuantumWaltz Рік тому +26

I reckon a biblical angel fits the bill, though I agree with Manly that I'm not getting the sense of a major narrative, just some creative spoops with some self-driven storytelling. If I had to put it in context, the descriptions of angels found in the Bible are clearly stilted and lacking, it's a lot of simile and not a lot of concrete detail, which suggests that angels are just plain hard to look at because they don't 'fit' in our reality, not being native to Creation. Heck, one kind of angel just looks like amber-colored light, rather than having ANY kind of form.
So in a game about navigating by collecting sight data, maybe collecting _too much_ data about the appearance of a biblical angel (one that doesn't preface its presence with a Fear Not - which means being afraid is the best and wisest option-!) is maddening at best and deadly at worst.
Considering the subsequent concept that demons are fallen angels and thus look just like them, but instead of being Good and True (in the structural sense as well as the spiritual or literary sense) they are warped and corrupted, and therefore outright hostile - it _could_ be a demon.

Games like these, the "blind" concept sort of thing, is just cool to me.
It reminds me of my favorite mobile game where the screen is black, and you "light up" the surroundings with your footsteps. Enemies then chase you when they hear your footsteps.
I know there was a pc game with the same concept, but yeah, the mobile game is my favorite one.

Interesting concept. I could see it being better when paired with an interesting story. Like some "The presence is only detected through lidar. You must locate it to save the city" or something like that. Also I believe the goose is the developer's thing as it was also in the toiletrooms.

This idea has its best realization in the Gmod. On the first glance it is a normal mod, you don't think that there is any horror element to it, it's just a way to experience maps that you already know. But when you start playing... You start to accidentally find a figure of a man that cannot be covered in those dots. It appears only for several moments. But the moment of first encounter is brilliant- you do not expect it at all.

_It's the 'outline' of a story_
It would be a great way of telling a story tho - of a civilization long gone or underwater or in outer space. The best part was seeing the finished structure and realizing, yes that's a house, that was as cave, that was a scary thing that either was bleeding or made something else bleed. And the figure of the man that mysteriously appeared. I wish the dev would actually attach some vague story to it or different little scenarios that you uncover with this laser.

  • @palecaptainwolfkayls8499

Personally, I was introduced to the LIDAR through a GMod game mode that was based off of a similar game (but not this one). The inception was more surface level, but the introduction…
At first, you’re presented with pitch black. Then, your input reveals your tool. And you begin to explore your environment, with nothing but silence and the satisfying buzz of the lasers to assist in your new mode of seeing a familiar location.
And then, you scan something. A person. A fake crash. And then you get the eerie crap you see in _this_ game, now with actual music to better fill the mood and void.

i'm not familiar with scanner sombre (the first game to be based on LIDAR like this) but I feel like the Gmod addon LIDAR (which also inspired this game) actually was a very elegant "game", particularly because you could go into the experience with no idea it was anything more than a cool visual effect.

Game idea I have no time to work on:
You are an explorer from an SCP-esque foundation sent to investigate an anomalous space. It's a school where only 2 days ago, was completely normal and operational. And then, mysteriously, in the middle of the day - everyone just... disappeared. The townsfolk only saw the children going back into their classes, and then no one ever saw them or the teachers again.
Now, the foundation had found out that the school had experienced an anomalous event that had merged an extra dimensional space with it's regular one. This space is traversable, but is inobservable for the naked eye.
You start the game in the school, playing normally. You can see whatever you see, with your own eyes, and that normal vision lets you see the world as we always do. But you are equipped with a LIDAR device attached to your headgear, so you can map out the extradimensional school and navigate it, as you simply cannot see it with your own eyes.
The idea is to piece together the mystery by mixing your knowledge of the real (normal vision) world, where you can see details - readable notes with text, pictures... combined with your knowledge of the extra dimension, with LIDAR vision. You can of course switch between the two, and the game would probably have some sort of monster that navigates this extra dimensional space, and to avoid it you need to learn which walls you can go through and such, as you learn the extra dimension. The monster makes sound whdn it approaches, but to see it you need to use your normal vision. However, in LIDAR mode you can find alert signs that it is approaching (maybe the extra dimension scan goes all ripply when it does). So yea that's just an idea I had. Feel free to steal it, ye who reads this comment.
