Elite: Dangerous 2.4 - Hullo! I'm A Thargoid & Today We'll Be Destroying Spaceships
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2017
- The new update to Elite: Dangerous has only a few small game features announced, with much of the release being focused on 'Mysterious Secret Things' which will be deployed over coming months.
Had three of the buggers pull me out of Witchspace, first one probed me and left, his two mates just camped there coldly eyeballing me, keeping their distance at about 500 metres. I reversed and they followed me, I moved forward they reversed.
No probing or light show from either.
I tried communicating through comms, the usual guff "I mean you no harm" etc , then when I typed "Take me to your Leader" the Hud glitched out at that very moment LOL!
I spent about 15 minutes with these two studying them in the drone camera.
Clearly they wanted to communicate.
Scary as hell.
Jason Cowley This is what happens to me with my luck xboxclips.com/Bob+From+Aus/5fb52b07-c179-445d-ab97-a719ba2d4a91
Never ask to be taken to thier leader
Ever
Again
Thargoid 1: Hello wellcome to thargoid restaurant what would you like to eat?Thargoid 2: Escape pods with extra people.
The Thargoids are just farming human rare goods for community goals like what everybody else does in ED lol
you know a guy is a beast in programming when he translating spacesbarsvalues of ascii in octal on the fly while kaiting a alien ship
You literally tossed an escape pod into space to see if the alien will eat it. There was a person in there!
But, but..... It was for science. Sacrifices have to be made sometimes. I'm sure the eaten person will understand that it was all for science and the furthering of understanding this strange species known as Thargoids.
"There was a person in there!"
Isn't that the fun part, though? :D
that's imperial scrubs for you, they don't care about "lower class"
For SCIENCE! :-)
Imperial Slavery is 100% voluntary and can be used to pay off debt, unlike the Federals who are happy to enslave their citizens with debt for a life time.
There better be a hidden counter-community goal where you feed as many escape pods to our future dark god rulers.
regardless of if there is one or not, that's a great idea! I'm 100% down with going full murder cult on this.
That would imply FD actually tanking the risk of not knowing from the start what will unfold and as such give a true choice instead of the illusion of one.
Why do you say illusion of choice? Haven't there been stories written and then scrapped after relevant killable NPCs were offed by players?
Luckeux Freespace's Hammer of light style.
What happens if you eject into an escape pod and it eats you?
It's a Weather balloon, nothing too see here.
Uhh, the weather balloon is screaming at me in strange alien tongues again!
Don’t worry it happens all the time
One of the weather balloons screamed
“You will be taken to our ruler, He Who Walks on the Void!! Fthagn!!!!”
Welcome to Gnosis, Scott. Help yourself with whisky and biscuits while waiting for the jump.
Tuomas Pönni so what system did it jump too?
Hyades sector AQ-Y D81
That's what happens when you don't fly safe.
The Thargoids will eat you.
FLY SAFE COMMANDER TOWER OUT
So nice of you to sacrifice a human to the Thargoids, I'm sure that they didn't mind. LOL
That'll teach them for not flying safe
It was for science.
yeah the Thargoids attacked them cause they didn't fly safe.
Scott pls ban the bot
Reed Worsham For a second I thought that was some sort of alien communication or something
This is what happens when you don't eat your vegetables kids. They turn into an ancient race of super sophisticated flower ships that go around eating all the escape pods, while they say in encrypted ascii octal "All your base are belong to us.".
ayylmao
Nah.. more like "Eat violent sitcoms, poet!"
Oh, yay! A ship is here to save me!
Wait... what are you doing?
No, no! Get me back in! Don't let this thing ta-
I dont know why, but something about that Thargoid ship turns and flies unnaturally scary fast, is frightening
They're buddies with the Shadows. :)
XD
If so where is Mr. Morden or someone like him? "what do you want?" Maybe the Guardians are like the Vorlons? It might be possible that the Guardians created/uplifted the Thargoids because apparently they were quite could at bio-engineering other organisms for military applications.
"I'm keeping my distance" he says, right after flying so close it turns red and stares at him.
I was worried for a second that you were going to get an automatic game over with no respawn options after it destroyed you (since logically after it destroyed your ship, it would pick up your escape pod)
I don't think they are going for realism there. :D You also get a new ship after dying in a black hole pretty much. :D
"Alright, you crashed your last three ships, except for the one that you somehow flew into a black hole. Here, have another junker. We've got nothing better to do with 'em!"
They don't always take escape pods.
Right? I dunno what they could have done different while still keeping the game playable, but even a different rebuy screen would have been cool.
Try giving it the voyager golden record
the things do kinda look like the V'ger orifice in the first star trek movie...
I found it interesting that it did not follow you after you dropped your heat sink by accident. Your the first i have seen do it so maybe they see heat. You might have uncovered something by accident.
Iwant2believe78 No, i went in silent running, and it still saw me and attacked on sight.
You, as a pilot, produce heat that, if they have sensitive enough sensors, could be detecting. Thus there's still something to the thermal theory.
Gaalidas That's speculation, so far does not seem to do anything.
They never follow you after they scan
Mr shadow but it already homed in on you when you first jumped in and it was red and preparing to attack scott. Dropping the heat sink gave it something else to lock on to allowing scott to boost away. It looked like by the time he turned around it had maybe delt with the heat sink and was going back to its scavenging. Would be interested to test this theory but i am 15k Ly from the Pleiades. Sure someone will prove or disprove it soon enough.
Great vid, but I'm glad I hadn't seen it before my first Thargoid encounters. The experience - especially in VR - is genuinely frightening. I knew about the Thargoids from the original Elite but that did nothing to prepare for seeing one "in person".
The first time I realized that one was gobbling up occupied escape pods was horrifying, and I've since tried when possible to swoop in and snatch the pods before the Thargoid gets them. I've succeeded a few times, accidentally came in too fast and smashed the pod a couple of times (probably better than the fate that awaited them in the clutches of the 'Goids), and one time ended up getting disabled and abducted myself. Terrifying!
"Green-Acid-Goo-Fire-Stuff". Scott, could you please keep the technical jargon to a minimum? :D
"This week I have mostly been eating spaceships."
The ASCII message changed after the Thargoid ate the canister. Does anyone knows if it's easier to decrypt?
i found this remlok-industries [dot] fr/4207/science-et-thargoids-2-4-le-retour/?lang=en
Thnak you!
check out the elitedangerous subreddit on reddit. A lot of research going on.
Apparently it's been solved here forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/379652-Alien-archeology-and-other-mysteries-Temporary-discussion-hub?p=5960518&viewfull=1#post5960518
@@Assimilator1 Dont feel like reading 100 pages rn, can anyone post the decrypted messages here?
These are exciting times for Elite! I can't wait to see what information can be garnered via the new scanning equipment!
Okay, I think I'm going to take a vacation at Beagle Point now.
Cant you just feed it?
You know........with Imperials........
Now that is... a good idea :)
Those sound like the words of a future slave to me...
You can indeed give it slaves, and it will accept them.
Combat logging ladies go first ! 😉
Dazidan They wanted my Sensor Fragments and SINGLE unit of Meta-Alloys xboxclips.com/Bob+From+Aus/5fb52b07-c179-445d-ab97-a719ba2d4a91
I wonder if the person in the occupied escape pod was a virgin? Because Scott totally sacrificed it.
You mentioned, "somehow faster than the speed of light"
You should look up the "lore", around frameshift drives.
Here's a pretty decent summary:
"Rather than accelerate a ship through space, the frame shift drive moves space around a ship to allow it to travel faster than light without using extreme amounts of energy or experiencing time distortion.
Frame shift drives use a modified Alcubierre Drive design to compress space in front of ships in supercruise.
Frame shift drives enable ships to enter hyperspace, a region with more dimensions than normal space, in which extremely fast travel is possible. Hyperspace jumps rely on quantum mechanics, as the destination of any given jump must be known before the jump is made, and the amount of energy needed to complete the jump is discrete."
Isn't that how the Professor explains the Planet Express Ship in Futurama?
frame shift drives, hyperspace drives, etc, are all variations of the same concept. It's certainly not unique to Elite, you can find the same concept in dozens of other games, books, movies, etc. Functionally, the "hyperdrives" in Star Wars are the exact same concept.
There's entire quantum mechanics articles that really go as far into the "idea/tech" that was can in our current understanding of the universe.
So to your question, I've never really been into futurama, but this specific concept is widespread enough I wouldn't doubt that's what was mentioned there.
I love how you post this as if I'm someone who's never played the game, doesn't occasionally have beers with the creators (ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=T28ZWKyadUc) and has never spoke at conferences alongside Miguel Alcubierre (twitter.com/DJSnM/status/894591026039476224)
:)
I'm glad they sorted the animation when dropping out of supercruise near the megaships. They used to just 'appear.' Also aside from all the alien stuff there are some long needed features like a search and rescue contact. Am I also right in thinking that they've improved the route planner? Haven't had the chance to give it a go yet
Oh, and as I watch further I find you've actually covered at least some of this :P
From what I've heard elsewhere, eg. ChaosWulff's channel, the route planner can now extend to 20K ly, and it's much faster. I noticed that lots of long distance missions now appear in station services, cargo runs to Colonia, etc. One mission was info delivery for 1.7M reward, but there's no way I could cover 20K ly in 7 days atm. :D
Your route also leaves a grey lined trace, a reminder, it goes away when you log off.
mapesdhs Ooh, I have a type-7 outfitted for exactly that purpose. I'm quite tempted to try some of those long distance deliveries
Good point MrShadowofthewind, I forgot about that! And an interesting fact about the data/info delivery missions: they don't take up any cargo space, so one could seriously stack them up for significant reward. However, I discovered last night that there is a maximum number of missions one can take on; not sure what the number is but it isn't that high. I was at a station that had loads of data/info missions to somewhere very close by (one jump) but the reward per mission wasn't much (a few thousand each, about 20K at most). However, there were so many of them (half a dozen to a dozen from every faction rep) I decided hey that actually all adds up to quite a lot, and it only involves just two destinations in the same system. So I started accepting them all, but about half way through the station suddenly said nope, too many open missions. Well damn. I went ahead with the deliveries (bonus for last minute get-here-sooner), but annoyed that the mission count cutoff. Not an issue for the high paying missions to Colonia, etc., ie. stacking those up in the same way would still mean a 30M+ payout, but I didn't know there was a mission count limit (has FD not heard of linked lists??) or that the limit was so small.
I'm also thinking that, unlike a normal cargo delivery run, would data/info delivery missions not incur the wrath of pirates? If so, then stacked data/info delivery missions to Colonia (or that other place, forget its name) would be a reasonably risk free way of making a bundle. The key would just be getting it done in time, alas atm I couldn't play often enough for that. Still, food for thought.
Disappointing rewards for intended activity? classic E:D!
Thargoids are adorable! They'r like cute terrifying space squids.
You gave it an OCCUPIED escape pod? What kind of sardistic monster are you?!
The kind that's not quite so bad sadistic. ;D
Scott Manley, aiding Thargoids by sacrificing his own species. Remind me to not find myself in an escape pod around him.
Some of those codes were also translated by Canonn to ''Hull stress factor uncertain'' which is a reference to Elite Classic.
Having played the original BBC model b 8 bit version. I'm stepping into the game for the first time. And I still have a feeling of dread at the mere mention of a thargoid in witch-space. But I'm also looking forward to exploring the galaxy.
8:06 "This ship isn't made for speed" - the asp explorer is one of the, if not the fastest ships in the game. What are you on about? :)
Storm maneuverability*
Now this is where the wave motion gun on space battleship Yamato might come in handy...
Interceptor Thargoids are the most terrifying, and they come in three variants too. What you've encountered is the Cyclops Variant.
Holy shit! I'm downloading this update right now, this looks amazing.
Prior to Dangerous, I only ever played Frontier, so I have never been face to face with the Thargoids before.
This is the first vid, or any other bit of news/hype about the new update, and I would like to supply a theory I got from watching this video. Please feel free to shoot it down in flames =p
The current iteration of Thargoids are the ships themselves, maybe some kind of "consciousness arks", or similar. They are gathering humans to use as material to reconstitute their normal thargoid bodies.
I've been following quite closely the whole Thargoid stuff going on in Dangerous and i've also came up with such a theory but we have no kind of evidence to support it as of now
Could Meta-Alloys be Fuel for there ships or to repair?
I mean if your going to charge into a new place it would be handy if you can sustain your ships in deffinetly..
we have Stars we can scoop all over the galaxy.. but since they use Witch-space differently... maybe thats not an option?
I honestly thought the Thargoids would attack unprovoked, but this is changing my thoughts on it.
When they started collecting escape pods, I was wondering how that might play in to the player death/escape pod/rebuy mechanic... Kinda disappointed to see you jump right back to the same rebuy screen. Would have been great to see something different after a Thargoid death, though I don't really know what you could do differently and have the game still playable.
Looks like it's the Yuuzhan Vong bio tech back at it again!
As a humble Trader I think I'll keep my trade in the core worlds, Thargoids aren't good for business.
Although smuggling is a lot better now. Especially smuggling alien stuff.
You might find the sale price for goods in Thargoid infested places a lot higher than normal now.
It's okay to do brave Sir Robin in these situations
HULLO, IT'S SCOTT MANLEY HEIR!
In space no one can hear you scream, when your being probed. dun dunn dunnn.
Nice time-lapse there :)
It's "Indra", not "Indira". Just FYI.
And goddamn, the Thargoids in this game have done the best job I've ever seen of making an alien race seem unsettling, scary, and truly ALIEN without just going straight into horror (like the movie Alien, or The Flood from Halo).
It's not a hypothesis, though. They are literally capturing occupied pods. Also, Ancient Tablets, or anything relating to the Guardians, will make them *very* angry.
How did I never know that Scott Manley is an EDer! Sweet! -CMDR K'rieg We'Hr
The only thing is whatever you do science wise, the message from FD was "YOU WILL BE FIGHTING THE THARGOIDS" so i have the feeling whatever we do will be irrelevant, FD have decided our course of action already.
Yay! More E:D content!
Damn, I wish I played this more. This stuff's really cool . . .
wait, did you just throw a desperate person in a escape pod to a Thargoid to test a theory... damn, Scott, that is cold
Oh no, does this mean the Thargoids are going to be pulling you into witch space now, as in the original?
fairly sure that this was already a thing, the old scan cutscene that used to happen (dunno if it still does) would happen mid frame-shift to other systems iirc
Yeah, but at least they didn't kill you
They pulled you out of Witchspace, also known as Hyperspace, in that scene.
The whole nature of Witch-space is still unknown to this day - where does it take you when you travel between stars? There are thousands of records and reports, locked away, documenting pilots who glimpsed inexplicable lights, and even structures, within the witch-space tunnels. Some even believed witch-space was haunted by ghosts of ships that never reached their intended system. It is certainly true that a number of ships never reached their destinations.
The Frame-Shift Drives we use are new, quiriumless, made only 13 years ago. Most large ships and stations still use old Type 2b Drives that don't rely on quirium.
Great way of Frontier to tell stories, games like Eve could learn from this.
That code might be some kind of recognition signal, but I'm sure somebody has figured it out by now.
Indra - reads it as Indeera.
I hereby delcare unconditioned loyalty to our new thargoids overlords
you can't just do that since the thargoids are kind of in a bit of a civil conflict right now.
I am still disappointed that the promised Offline-Mode is missing. I would want to experience the storyline events at my own pace. Maybe when the official story is over...
I'm almost tempted to dust off my Imperial Cutter. Almost...
This Game has such amazing sounds design. It's fantastic. It's also in part why I like subnautica so much.
YOU SHOULD HAVE PUT NUKES ON THAT ESCAPE POD!!!!!
Why did they leave all the escape pods for you to pick up at the 1st set of derelicts you found if they are interested in taking the escape pods as per your main encounter .. seems odd there would be any pods left to collect if the thargoids take them all before warping away.
Jesus now that's an interesting structure
2.4 is kinda like the prequels of star wars, most people that were not necessarily interested in that stuff , or were more interested in exploration or trading or (kinda) combat were not really satisfied. But the people who were more interested in story or character development and that stuff loved it. I'm not mad about the update but it was kinda not satisfying for my corner of the block (exploration).
so how long until we realize that the Thargoids are pulling a Collectors from ME2?
Kibbity Flibbit My next goal after getting to Beagle Point is to start doing some research into the Collectors..I MEAN THARGOIDS.
Yeah I found a destroyed imperial fleet right in Lavingy Duvals capital XD
I bought the game last week iM a pure NOOB !!! Watching ur videos is a privalige!! The game has blown my mind .. if only I could master re-entry from fsd then maybe I'll progress . Iv watched all vids/done tutorials.. im just thick!!! Always to fast !!!!
Ah the ethical ramifications of feeding the giant green space monster occupied escape pods... For Science!
Aiding and abetting the enemy.
The needs of the many... :D
Haaahh.. I live at Chris and Sylvia's in the same system!
Would be interesting to make the Thargoid pick up a trojan virus or something.
Very different compared to KSP huh?! But the game seems interesting, I just miss the explosions LOL!! ;)
Welp....I docked to The Gnosis like 6 months or more ago and forgot about the game....I guess I'm in the Pleiades sector now....
Well... that totally didn't gave me the chills... game's getting more and more interesting.
Also, congrats on getting REKT by an UNKNOWN!
human sacrifice in the name of science
I love how this game is being developed :D
You are a monster, sir.
Its license plate is PROBE1, so I think we know what it's come to do.
I don't play Elite yet (need a better PC)...but this behavior by the Thargoids is....unsettling...one of the first things a military must do before an invasion is gather information about your enemies weaknesses and strengths...in a planetary invasion it would mean abducting a species for experiments to know what chemicals and such would effect them and provide the most efficient method...I'm not one to spark rumors but I hope the Ageist program gets set up soon cause you might end up really needing it...
Aegis. Ageist is bias against age.
The poor people in that pod
In all honesty, if its possible to scan them wouldn't also be possible to transmit things to them as well? If so, why not send a few prime numbers or numbers they sent back and see if they respond with anything. (That's from an RP stand point but I'd bet the developers would add a mission thing in to do that, like one of those global efforts that the community does. It'd be like 'Find and scan as many thargoids as you can, then send this information back to the and report it to XYZ') :D
So it is picking up all escape pods it can find...I am kinda sure we can weaponize this
Elite: Gangrenous
It is rescuing humans in escape pods.
One day i would like to land on more then 3 ^different planet types which are repeated millions of times. For a game that boasts about the size and the exploring (and little more), that's just ridiculous. You can only see identical beige crater worlds so often before the "exploring" becomes a joke. And i can't help but think that making the procedural generator just a bit more versatile can't be that big a deal.
That would be a nice thing for a "big" update. Not the tiny bits and pieces they throw with a maximum of noise at way too forgiving fans.
"About life, the universe and everything" Is that from Hitchhikers?
Blind Pew got into combat with one of these things you should check it out Scott
New CMDR here went to try to help with community goal and Liz is grayed out. Do the engineers need unlocking before I can contribute?
No, the station which takes your deliveries is not the same as Liz Ryder's base, so you can visit without unlocking.
Scott Manley gotcha thanks for the quick response man!
Where's the Idira? This must be a new find, I only knew of the Indra.
Asp Exploder
From now on I'm keeping my helmet on in mine all the time. :|
Bottom of a South Carolina pine-cone. lol
the numbers translate to "Did you crack the code"
so, how long did that time lapse shot at 2:34 take to capture?
Maarkov it goes realistically in real time, so that depends on orbital period of the megaship. I'd guess it's 30-60 minutes. 2 hours max.
Humans must cooperate in order to defeat an alien race
now things get interesting
was imperial conditioning a dune reference or do they have that in elite too?
Did you try rescuing the escape pods before the Thargoid can pull them all the way in?
Ok i guess i will have to buy the horizons in adition to the base game
it's less bad than it used to be like last year, they dropped the season system and horizons is going to keep getting updates aswell as the base game.
Can you confirm that they dropped the season system with a source? Not anouncing season 3 yet doesnt mean they dropped it imo, I havent read anything about dropping it.
Here you go: www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/64pp4c/ask_him_anything_david_braben_obe_fdev_ceo/dg42x3y/
We will probably know more on the 7th of October when they're having their own Frontier Expo.
The only thing I dislike is the green and red lights of the Thargoid. It's waaay too human.
It would make sense for them to use lighting that we can understand easier so we leave em alone
I think if you sell to search and rescue you get more rep and if you sell to black market you get more money
