I’m a 58 year old man who recently started experiencing acute pain in this area of my left foot. I am also an endurance athlete. This video was a big help. I’ve got an upcoming appointment with a specialist.
I can attest that age is no obstacle! I am 60 and was diagnosed with plantar fascitis and heal spurs. Noticed that I tend toward pronation and realized that I was pronating due to pressure from small bunionettes. I tried cushioned shoes with arch supports but this only made it more painful to walk barefoot. A few months ago I resumed daily yoga, and I have been doing foot exercises like those shown in the video plus other exercises to strengthen my arch. I can now walk barefoot again with no pain and have ordered barefoot shoes so I can enjoy the same when not at home.
Thanks! From your video I learned that what I have is a historically accurate tailor's bunion! I barely ever wear shoes, but I do sit cross-legged a lot and my toes get smushed.
I realized this year I have wide feet and have been wearing the wrong shoes my whole life. I’m 23. My pinky toe sits under my other toe. I have bunionettes and I have a funny walk. I have an unconscious habit of standing on the outside of my feet as well. It’s really annoying being a woman with wide feet it REALLY limits my style and shoe options. But my feet don’t look good in open shoes anyway.
4 and a half years ago i started working overnight and had no money for new shoes and had to wear these Vans that were too small for me. On top of being too small, i was wearing them for 9 more hours when my feet were supposed to be resting. It was excruciatingly painful when i started getting bunions. The cramps in the metatarsals would almost make me cry. I started buying wide toed shoes (also trying to cut down on flip flops. Those are terrible for us) and they feel better but now I'm starting to get tailors bunions. It may be from trying to put less pressure on my big toe. I feel like my feet are giving up on me.
Completely understandable. Im glad to hear you started making some changes that have helped. Hopefully some of these tips helped out! I also have a foot & ankle plan on my PT platform you’re welcome to check out. You get one free week! Jen.health/freetrial
My bunionette is 1/2 way between my pinky toe and my heal, in the middle and on the side, of my right foot. A chiropractor once told me it was caused from straining/bearing down due to Crohnes disease. Do you know of a foot exercise or treatment that would help shrink it down?
So this still can often mean that we could afford to do some active strengthening of our mid foot and toes because even with structurally flat feet, we can still increase the strength and support of our intrinsic foot muscles. I would really consider trying Vivo's because they show to increase foot strength by up to 70% after 6 months of wearing them!
Nowadays it’s the sneaker fashion that’s causing trouble; flat sneakers, too bouncy sneakers - you name it. I’m trying your exercises. So far happy with the toe separators. I use flip flops at home.
I am barefoot a lot of the time, and never wear constrictive shoes. However, my pinky toes are turning on it's side, and I'm getting a taylor's bunion. The foot doctor I went to said it's because I'm barefoot too much. Do you think this is true?
I don't think that's true...thight shoes are a big culprit of why bunions happen. It can be because your hips/hamstrings/calves/arch are tight, make sure to stretch/massage them with a roller. Look for video routines here on youtube. One way to tell tightness is part of the problem is by seeing if your feet pronate. They're related and those muscles/tendons being tight(i believe they also shorten if not stretched) can cause the bones to shift to that outward position. I look for leg/feet yoga routines to help stretch. Also strengthening exercises like these can help: ua-cam.com/video/xTUmZcxf_tI/v-deo.html
I definitely don't agree with that assessment. It could have to do with different restrictions you may have in your foot and ankle. You could check out our Foot and Ankle Plan at jen.health
I’m always spreading my toes either with my fingers, socks, or toe spacers. I ALWAYS wear toe spacers when I have shoes on. My toes ACHE when I’m not spreadIng them. I still have a tailors bunion. Any reason why this could be happening?
It sounds like your toes are craving space! Have you started trying to do more active spreading exercises and foot exercises to develop more internal foot strength and active movement?

Great video!,Thank you! I have a painful left 5th metatarsal bunionette.Oucj it really hurts! have spent a great deal on shoes 6E new balance 990s. I also have plantar fasciitis both feet. Thanks for the info. Will check out your suggestions.
i cant plant my left foot because of the pain in my pinky toe and the side of my left foot, thinking that it was gout but if i try to press my pinky joint theres no pain at all. so what i did is i put a pen in between my pinky finger and suddenly i can plant my foot. its still painful though
Great video! I started using barefoot shoes and going barefoot for over 3 years now... sadly noticing a tailor's bunion on the left foot. Very random and odd. Any thoughts on this? Could going barefoot have done this?
Make sure you're not resting your feet on the outside toe while barefoot. I had this happen while barefoot because I would work at a desk resting my feet on the outer toe/foot. I had to be extremely cautious so it didn't get worse
How about strengthening? Don't I want to strengthen the digiti minimi. I've been trying to spread my toes & I finally got my pinkies to move YAY! The first week, they just laughed at me & wouldn't move at all 😂 I want to keep getting it stronger. Got any hints for that?

A lot depends on if you are used to being barefoot. Honestly, this could be pretty aggressive for most people. So transitioning slowly and working on foot and ankle exercises prior to doing any heavy running barefoot would be best for most people
My feet are 2 sizes larger than 40 years ago, from gradually going flat. I’ve been wearing “barefoot” shoes including Vivobarefoot, for over 10 years. Now I have a large painful bunionette which requires a really wide toe box, and Vivos are nowhere near wide enough. This video is just a commercial for that company and it is misleading! Absolutely agree that there isn't one type of shoe or brand for everyone. It is just the shoe that works for us and that we love and use for everything!
But remember, it's all about the function, rather than the structure. Providing the exercises to help with this to keep function high and reduce any pain.
Would you advise having the bunionette removed before joining the army? I think its type 1. Like a knuckle/marble. Fine in trainers but hurts barefoot on hard surface.
