I have heard such a diversity of opinions from podiatrists about barefoot shoes. I have enormously preferred them and absolutely feel that the narrowness of my shoes in my childhood contributed to the formation of my bunions; my issues have been less after switching. But I look at my local podiatrists' recommendations and it's like everyone's telling me to get thick orthotics with arch support... which I cannot imagine for a second will do anything for my bunions.
I am going through the same thing. I did have a tailors bunion removed through surgery. I am now dealing with Morton's Neuroma. Both podiatrists I went to told me the same thing. Get a cortizone shot or two, get orthodics to release pressure and where shoes like Brooks or New Balance. This stuff is like food science. Contradictions everywhere! I have yet to see a video of anyone who has corrected a bunion without surgery though. Just chiropractors claiming they have.
Podiatrists tend to educate people or recommend interventions based on what they know or are taught in school, much of which is intervention or device based. Check out Dr Emily Splichal on Instagram! She is a functional pediatrics who approaches our feet in a barefoot, wholistic way that we love!!
Bunions are tough to "correct" as far as how the look, especially if they are progressed. However, we can definitely significantly reduce symptoms based on building active mobility and strength in the foot and toes!
hypermobile shoes are begging to create ankle sprians. Nike gave all of us a pair at an seminar and I threw them away after a few weeks. SHOES DO NOT CAUSE BUNIONS, irregular biomechanics of the subtalar joint through the 5 to 7000 steps per day over ones lifetime does...Each step (and one takes from 5 to 7000 perday) generates a force of severl hundred pounds per sq inch through that joint in the transferance of weight bearing from heel s strike to full conatnct stance WHen the subtalar pronates past perpendicular, it unlocks the midtarsal joint, the first metatarsl rolls mmedially and the great toe adducts and rolls into valgus.......Slow osteroarthritic hanges in the ist MPJ hen adapts the joint into progressive degrees or Hallux Abducto valgus.... SHOE NEVER have a deforming force akin to that..Shoe can HASTEN thae porduction of an HAV,but there are NOT CAUSATIVE. Don't believe a word form these UNEDUCATEAD QUACKS
I'm trying to correct one (mild, but new and painful) on my own because I know of no one where I live who's recommending barefoot shoes or toe spacers. Trying to cover all the bases. I find wearing my Correct Toes with shoes but without socks to be too uncomfortable. So, I used cotton sport weight yarn and knitted a toe spacer using a double garter stitch (so it would be soft and squishy). It's knitted into a circle and slipped on the toes with the extra bit of the circle on top. I can wear these in barefoot dress shoes and in the night when sleeping. I wear my correct toes the rest of the time. Thanks for these tips!
Have you had any progress or luck dealing with this on your own? I've got one on my left that's getting worse and one starting on my right and i'm really scared about what's going to happen, so i want to start trying to stop it :(
After a several week gout flare up in my knee and big toe I noticed a bunion had/was in the process of developing. Been trying to get it corrected and your videos are very informative! Unfortunately my insurance doesn't cover physical therapists, only chiropractors. They adjust real quick and do a little stim. Thanks guys
Thank you for watching! Totally understandable. You're welcome to watch any of our previous videos where I offer so many discussions and exercises on different topics. I also recently launched a new program you can find at jen.health/ where I essentially created several physical therapy plans for people with different needs. Hopefully some of these work for you!
I too would get gout attacks in my big toes and I believe this is also a reason I started to develop bunions. Wearing tight narrow shoes is also part of the cause
Superb discussions guys, this is really informative. Yes, the functional exercises are good to learn. Do share some case studies of patients you helped. This way we know whether your treatment works. 😊😊😊
Thank you guys for the kind information. I lover it. Lately I strated having some issues in my knee and now I got the whole different perspective on foot and it's functions.thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you!!! Very helpful video. I have watched tons of video about stretching and improving ankle movility but this one is different, you focus on stretching & working the Middle of the Foot (metatarsals)and getting a proper balance in the foot(pronation/supination). I sprained my ankle 2 years ago and now I have pain in my little toe and I notice a bump developping. I am very worried about it. Please can you do more videos about Mid foot mobility, streching, strengthening or a list of videos for cases of sprain ankle &bunion?
Thank you so much for your support, I'm glad this has helped! Here are a few videos i think may benefit you. I also have a PT plan for foot plain you're welcome to check out on my PT platform jen.health/freetrial & you can get your first week free! ua-cam.com/video/JQmtULDxMAA/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/f-vLnc9HiKk/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/GpYWyF1xvFE/v-deo.html
These foot problems become established and one then starts experiencinng all kinds of painful symptomes and issues through your feet shins, thighs, hips and back. Its good to be aware how necessary movement is to the body. Twice Ive gotten into great troubles with outtrodden heels on very good quality shoes even after I got orthotics. One does expect shoes to last longer. But keep an eye on this too.
Unfortunately modern shoes screw our beautiful feet :( I started to get a bit on my right toe and got vivobarefoot shoes plus doing band toe exercises. Also got toe separater to wear at home.
You often won't make a significant difference on how the bunion looks, especially depending on how significant the bunion is... But you can drastically improve the symptoms, strength and support for the toes/foot!
I got to 58 without having this. Last year I wore the wrong socks with patented leather non stretch boots and my right toe is now messed up. I'm so upset with myself. I threw those socks and boots away. Ugh... TY
Do you really think that music playing while you’re speaking enhances the video? Honestly, it’s hard to concentrate on what you’re saying to learn from you.
It’s so true how everything is connected and it’s important to consider the whole body, especially the hips down. I made a bunion self-massage & resistance stretch video to check out 🤙🏼
My bunion is due to my mom. She got both me and my brother to wear shoes, one size bigger, the logic being, we'd grow into them over a longer time. I now understand how such middle class myths have cause me to write this, after I ran some 5kms, a couple of days back and woke up 36 hrs later in the morning with a stuff toe. I will be seeking reparations from my mom, now. You did this to me.
Great video! Can you make a pot cast about Sacrum pain do to tight ligament around it and how to fix it.. what exercises , stretches will help and what causes it...thanks so much
We still recommend barefoot! Check out these videos we made on flat feet. One's a podcast with lot's of information & the other short video with exercises. Let us know if this helps! ua-cam.com/video/iYVJMCUTWck/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/vbCvO4Gqksg/v-deo.html
Nice! What state is your practice located in, I’d totally be there if it’s near haha! Keep up the awesome videos. My feet have a crazy arch (that I think I got from my grandmother lol) I’d be interested in preventing hammer toes . I remember grandma have some, and I see my toes starting to head that way :(
Aww thanks so much! We don't have an in person practice, but you could check out my new platform at Jen Health and get a free week to explore by going to Jen.Health/freetrial
I was told it is hereditary from mom's side.. I have 2 and one is more than the other.. also tighter and narrower footwear... the pronation and supination is something i already knew about the roll of the joints 25 years ago LOL
There can definitely be a genetic component. But the environment that we put our feet and bodies in can cause things to present more or less based on the consistent behaviors we use! That is why we encourage active mobility, exercises, different footwear, and barefoot periods!
How do we deal with metatarsalgia? I've been struggling with it for years. I've tried cortisone shots, special insoles and all different kinds of shoes. Help! I miss running!
ARE THESE EXERCISES , TO PREVENT BUNIONS , WHICH SEEMS LIKE ALOT TO ME, OR ARE THEY FOR WHEN YOU ALREADY HAVE BUNIONS, BC I ALREADY HAVE BUNIONS, WHICH REALLY, REALLY, SUCKS ?!
Bunions return in 60%+ of patients who have bunion surgery. Not only that, but it can also cause serious damage in some. Surgery is a hard pass for me since I have small bunions from using right narrow shoes for decades

Aaawwww! You are so sweet, Diana! ❤❤❤
Good info. I just got my first barefoot shoes and love them.
Love it! Hope you enjoy the barefoot shoes!

You're doing the right things!
Excellent bunion 101
Thanks for watching!
I really, really, would like to see some before and after photos of bunions reducing please???

And I have tried the stretching. Damn, my feet have those ligaments. Wow
haha, it is quite common! Hopefully this video helps!

Is barefoot acceptable for flat feet and hammertoe issues? I want to slow this progression if not hopefully reverse! Thank you! Great video.

Discretion is advised with the barefoot because of sharp rocks cacti, and thorns. And Broken glass is literally ducking [sic] everywhere.

Love it, love it, love it!!!! Keep it up guys ❤️
Thank you for the LOVE, Andrea! ❤
How do we deal with metatarsalgia? I've been struggling with it for years. I've tried cortisone shots, special insoles and all different kinds of shoes. Help! I miss running!
I would explore it lots of the same ways we show for bunions just with all of the toes!
are those barefoot shoes good for people with bunions or not?
They are great to help people start to find more space for their toes to move!
ARE THESE EXERCISES , TO PREVENT BUNIONS , WHICH SEEMS LIKE ALOT TO ME, OR ARE THEY FOR WHEN YOU ALREADY HAVE BUNIONS, BC I ALREADY HAVE BUNIONS, WHICH REALLY, REALLY, SUCKS ?!
I guess they can support in both situations!
@docjenfit All my fingers and toes hurts a little, I don't know how. Can you please help me? (Love ya❤️)
Explore it with some movement! We have lots of examples on my instagram @docjenfit
Too much talk.
Yeah sometimes we ramble because this is our podcast! So we try making it as interesting as we can...
