Great vid as always! I personally really like the mature form of the Micans. I live in Hawaii and we have these things growing huge in the wild! Mature forms turns green and keeps that velvet feel and reminds me of a glorosium with less veins
Hi Sean! I just recently discovered your videos! They’re so great and joyful to watch. You helped me a lot with my plants! I send you nice green greetings from Germany 💚
Anytime I want to acquire a new plant, or in this case got I got a micans cutting in a mystery package, I always make sure to watch your videos first. 👑 Thank you again!
filling the soil up over time makes so much sense somehow :O what ive noticed with plants like that where you put alot of them into one pot is that they can become a little unstable somehow, especially when you repot or if they hang down alot and its just those tiny stems flopping around in the top part of the soil. i need to try that. if they have multiple root points that way the entire plants rootball should be a lot mor stable
This has been my experience. I’ve got one with a single vine in a pot that is THRIVING, climbing up the strings of my floating plant shelves. My indoor pot with several vines in one pot is struggling terribly. The leaves are turning yellow and and not growing so well at all.
Your prop videos are simply the best on YT as you always give a follow-up which gives them SO MUCH more value. Thank you! Can't wait to cut up my new micans which I just got today....
You're becoming my favorite plant tuber. Haha, get it? Would love a tour of Indonesia's native foliage :) always wanted to visit. Love your setup and explanations. Thanks!
Thank-you so much Sean, As usual your videos are so Helpful, & very informative. And l love the different growing, & lightings, conditions you show Us, & the different plants growth rate in each type... Your plants grow so well, & fast in Indonesia.l must say, l'm a bit jealous... 😅👌 I live in Melbourne Australia, in an Old house with tiny Windows, so mine grow quite slower unfortunately. But they get there eventually. Thanks again, & l can't wait for your next video.... 👍❤🇦🇺😊🐨
Hey Sean! This is my second time watching this video because I am attempting to propagate some Micans cuttings now to make the mother plant bushier plus start a new plant. I am going out today to purchase a large bin to put some of them in soil (and then into the bin as you have demonstrated here). It appears that the ones in your bin grew healthier leaves with a richer green color🙂)...I haven't done well with Spaghnum Moss props, but I plan to try again for more practice with it. LOL.🙂 I have done better propping other plants in perlite. Have you ever tried propagating in Perlite? Thanks for a great channel, Sean! We all enjoy your explanations and your sense of humor as well! Greetings for the U.S.!! 🇺🇲🌴🧡
Ive not propagated in perlite but it makes sense that they would be happy as perlite creates the perfect propagation environment. It is just too expensive for me 😅
Finally you talk about micans!!! 😆I love micans so much. However I like the dark velvety leaves with maroon back a lot more than just green. 😍 Seems like some just have darker leaves than others. I have three at home. One dark, one medium, and one green. I wonder if there is a way to encourage the dark velvety leaves more. I heard that lower light would make the leaves darker, and I tried that with the greener one. Its leaves seem to get a little bit darker (also smaller), but the other two still have darker leaves while growing in an area with more light. 😂 Also maybe it's just me, I always think the sun stressed micans leaves look like they are yellowing. 🤣
Yepppp they become light green when sun stressed. It is wise to assume that lower light will encourage darker leaves, but it mught get longer internodes and smaller leaves
I wonder if your humidity tent didn't outperform ambient air because Jakarta is relatively humid? I live in an arid region and have humidifiers running 24/7 more for my houseplants than for myself. :)
This is the best propagation explanation. I’m literally taking notes 📝. With your “trick”, when you say that there will be many nodes buried using your method, do you mean the original 8? If not, can you explain how you end up with more nodes? Thank you, Oh Grand Teacher Of Plants 🙏!!!
I havent watched the video in years so Im not sure what the question refers to 😅 nodes are existing on a used plant stem, and new nodes are produced with each subsequent new leaf. The only way to get new nodes is when you get leaf growth 😀
Great video👍 i noticed last year that single node cuttings produce small leaves to begin with, i grew mine up wooden panel and the leaves got bigger iv'e air layered the top growth points they should be ready now i'm thinking of putting them in lecca.they are great plants look nice in early morning sunlight
Not burying the stems too deep and topping-up soil are great tips. I have 2 week old soil propagated micans and i may have buried the stems a little too deep. They look droopy 😂
I have a fairly large mican plant that has thrips 🥲 I cleaned up all her leaves by soaking her in a bucket with soapy water and washed every leaf.. I then prayed 70% alcohol on her leaves after repotting her.. she looks pretty bad right now I’m worried she will not recover as her leaves are curled up.. if I propagate her in a few moths how close do the cuttings need to be to the grow light? You mentioned you had regular led lights and nothing special so I’m hoping just under a lamp may be good enough 😀 Ty
Ooh thrips bury inside the leaf. Surface pesticide may not work… I would introduce neem oil or pesticide into the root where it can be absorbed into the plant tissue.
Greetings from Barbados. Awesome video as always, I really enjoy your channel. I presently have two mican cutting propagating. I hope i’m as successful as you.
Hi. How much sun light (direct?) is required to sun stress them in your environment without burning them? Just like your parent plant in this video. Thank you
Reduce watering frequency gradually, do not let it go completely dry suddenly as it might also die of shock. After 2-3 months you should be able to let it dry out completely between watering, which they thrive in.
I got a cutting of this plant and I am fighting to keep it alive. I put it in a prop box and it wilted, I put it in soil and one of two leaves fell off. I watered it and put it in a south facing window with lots of sun and the leaf curled. I am hoping not to lose it, the plant is so pretty.
Always look forward to your videos! Quick question: is it normal for the leaves to have like water spots? I noticed even if I bottom water the plant this still happens to my micans
This is probably them trying to transpire/guttate additional water. Could be sign of a bit of overwatering but its quite normal for leaves to do that 😀
One node propagation should ALWAYS be last resort. Aka trying to take emergency cuttings. If the material is in even halfway decent condition like this is, you should always aim for a 5-6 node. 2-3 under, 2-3 over. Preferably 5-6 nodes. 2-3 buried. Period.
I have a lot of success with one node cuttings… with about 80% of the cuttings surviving. But you are right, commercial growers take 2-3 nodes on average and it must have been the most efficient.
Those terracotta pots in the background are distractingly attractive.

I was wondering today if I should have my node on top or buried under the soil, and you just answered my question. Thank you!

Could I hang them outside in the backyard (north facing?) I like the sunstressed look! Will they b ok with low humidity? I live in Texas 🥲
Yes I think they should do ok there. Take cuttings for insurance though.
Thank you Sean 🌷💚🙃
Love all your videos but just so u know it’s called Saran Wrap but that’s just a brand name for 1 type of plastic wrap.
Haha yes humans tend to do that! 😅

@@onlyplants thank you
Hi. How much sun light (direct?) is required to sun stress them in your environment without burning them? Just like your parent plant in this video. Thank you
Morning direct or evening direct when the suns coming from an angle would be perfect. Noon sun from high above can burn them.
Awesome video! Do you have any tips on how to prevent the stems from rotting after propagating?
They shouldn’t really rot… i have a video titled “water propagation” with tips on maximizing results, hope those tips help 😀
Thanks for the video Sean. Just a bit noisy background. It's OK anyway. 😘
Hi. What can I do if my leaves turn yellow for overwatering? Just wait for it to dry and water it less in the future or I should do something else?
Reduce watering frequency gradually, do not let it go completely dry suddenly as it might also die of shock. After 2-3 months you should be able to let it dry out completely between watering, which they thrive in.
Also increasing light and airflow helps sometimes
Ohhh I thought you can't ever let it dry completely like alocasias. Thanks!!
I’m going to try micans again and give it too light via a grow light and see what happens.
Sean’s doing our voice 😂😂😂

Water prop seems to work best for this. Too much sun will burn/curl this plant 😀
