The easy answer is: Christians did not worship the Roman gods. The Romans considered them to be irreligious.

@@irsq2419 kinda, but not completely. They believed that they were successful thanks to them worshipping All the gods. Jesus said that there is only one God that they should worship. They thought that if they didn't worship their gods and would worship only one God, they would throw a hissy fit.

In Diocletian's defense, most of his actions against Christians were the result of his co-emperor, Galerius, stirring things up and dragging Diocletian into it. He likely would have been fine with leaving the Christians alone otherwise. The Christian writer Eusebius stated as much.

This was most likely to decorate Diocletian’s reign after he died. Constantine loved Diocletian like a father figure, probably the same amount of love as his father in the west, Constantius. Though some of the things you mention is correct. Galerius was an unpredictable, dickhead emperor who cared nothing but himself and solidifying his reign. This can be said with Constantine, though Constantine actually cared about his family, morals and the people. Back to the issue, Diocletian funded the most for the persecutions and Galerius may have dragged him into the persecutions, but the problem wasn’t just the Christians. His previous hatred for Manichaeism transferred over to Christianity since Christianity has similar beliefs to Manichaeism. Eusebius was also told to change many things about his writings, such as Constantine’s first son with his first wife/concubine, Crispus, removing him from the biography of Constantine.

😔The major persecutions against Christians of which there are clear accounts were those under Marcus Aurelius, a second with Decius and Valerian and a third, called the "great persecution", with Diocletian. They ended with the edict of Nicomedia of 311 issued by the emperor Galerius, confirmed by the edict of Milan of 313 promulgated by Constantine I.
The Christians could have avoided martyrdom by sacrificing to the Roman gods without renouncing their faith, while the pagans were not allowed this, they had to cancel their faith and convert. The pagans would not have bothered one more God, there were several of foreign divinities in Rome, in the barracks and in the circuses there were chapels where everyone prayed to his God, with a tolerance that made Rome a beacon of civilization. The greatest martyrdom was that reserved for the pagans and concerned the entire Roman empire, both in the West and in the East.
In Christian hagiographic sources we remember, between the second half of the first century. and the beginning of the IV, 10 main persecutions against Christians, which occurred under the emperors: Nero, Domitian, Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, Septimius Severus, Maximin Thrace, Decius, Valerian, Aurelian and Diocletian.
The first persecution, that of Nero, also witnessed by Tacitus, broke out in 64 when Christians were accused of having started the Great Fire of Rome which destroyed a large part of the city of Rome. According to tradition, the apostles Peter and Paul were killed in this persecution.
In the following two and a half centuries, Christianity always remained an illegal religion and Christians guilty of impiety when they refused sacrifices to the Roman gods. But the ten "great persecutions" listed above were alternated with periods of tranquility and tolerance. Estimates of Christian martyrs are unclear. Hagiographic sources generally do not provide reliable data, and in the 1st and 2nd centuries there was no imperial decree ordering an organized persecution of Christians for their faith. The killings and condemnations were limited episodes, linked to concrete sins that were attributed to them, and were also accompanied by favorable attitudes in some of the emperors.
The serious crisis of the third century of the empire was instead the cause of an attitude of greater hostility in general, also due to the greater weight assumed by the Christian communities, especially in the eastern regions of the empire. The persecutions ceased with the Milan edict of 313, in which Constantine I recognized freedom of worship for Christians, while allowing the profession of paganism.
Julian the Apostate, the last pagan emperor of Rome, did not forbid Christian worship, because he supported freedom of worship. Only he forbade Christians to teach Greek and Roman literature, which Christians opposed and condemned, often in a violent way, so much so that another element of the Christian conflict with the
In 380 the emperor Theodosius I issued the edict of Thessalonica with which he proclaimed Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire, drastically prohibiting any other type of cult under penalty of death and confiscation of all family assets, thus starting the persecution of the pagans.

    Too oversimplified.
    1. Actually pagan gods did promise a better afterlife, as did they promise a good present life. Different interpretations existed. Just as some Christians branches such as Calvinism believe everything good that happens in your present life is the will of god and a sign that he has intention of sending you to heaven.
    2. Persecutions were kinda on and off. Same for the Jews. The real tough persecutions that exists in the public imaginary, with the catacombs and all, is the one begun by Diocletian. As stated, he believed the decline of the empire was due to a decadence of Roman virtues. So he tried to revert as many things as possible back to how they used to be, including religion. Nero’s persecution was much more legal based, he was trying to appease the people, so picked a distrusted minority and punished their members. However no full scale persecutions had begun. Nero also did not get to rule for much, and was dethroned (and killed himself) when his behaviour got on the nerves of half of Roman generals. So that there persecutions kinda stopped to then re-start and re-end once in a while.
    3. Romans were not upset with the lack of worshipping pagan gods. Not until Diocletian at least (he actually did a beef because of it). All religions were allowed to freely worship in Rome, including Jews. Roman’s disliked other aspects of the Christian religion. As mentioned, the secretive meetings beheind closed doors (which btw, because of Roman influence gradually disappeared, and it’s disappearance was probably a major factor in it’s growth in popularity. Now anybody can walk into a Christian church, even during mass, weather Christian or not). Since Romans had a lot of public spaces, even private houses were not totally restricted to outsiders, and people went in an out of politicians houses (as their living rooms -and gardens became public spaces), the fact that Christians and Jews barred off anybody from what was going on kinda put off the Romans. Furthermore, although there was freedom of worship, Romans did not allow religious conversion attempts. Christianity was the only religion, more so than Juadism, that actually went around telling everybody that they had to convert, and that everybody else is going to hell. Christianity also has a tendency to refuse everything non-Christian (see the enourmous destruction of pagan texts after Christianity rose to power).
    4. For some reason Jesus is also part of the video. Romans had nothing to do with Jesus, and the Roman emperor at the time, Tiberius, probably did not even know him. Judea was a semi-indipendent region (it became a proper Roman Province after the Jewish rebellion of the 69), best characterized as a client state, where the ruler was officially supported by Roman forces, and where a Roman garrison resides, serving both to protect and act in name of the Roman preferred leader (hence not allowing any anti-Roman, a.k.a pro-Parthian king to take power) and at the sine time, being ready to intervene in case a rebellion against Romans occurred (This has always been very common in border regions between rival empires, since they were necessary buffers, and Romans and Parthian competed between eachother to get their preferred ruler into power. Modern state still do this, think fo Korea or Vietnam). So that was the extend of Roman involvement. In Rome, virtually nobody was aware of what was going on

The inscription said, in my words, that there were no longer any Christians to be found. (In light of the great Apostacy, this cinches it up very tightly.) If I remember right, it was shortly after that that Constantine had his famous cross-vision. It would be cool if you guys could find it. I found it in a set of encyclopedias of religion. I know it’s not proof to those screaming at the sky show me and then I’ll believe but wow how the gospel changed the world.
Yep as a Christian I have to admit the cause was hijacked by groups of political persuasion who were Christian by name or association only because it was join up or be left behind……but the simple truth of the gospel of Christ lived on through true vessels of joy, love, mercy, and peace. That’s been part of the fight since Paul saw it coming before his death…..true faith is practiced daily and a love for Christ that can’t be hidden. It’s not a political party, social club, or organization of peers. But a spirit on display in your home, organization, or work. A change of character that effects your choices wherever you are. Imagine, there were some instances where professing Christians burned professing Christians at the stake, committed murder by wiping out groups that didn’t necessarily agree with certain doctrines……and so on.
How did they justify that? I’m going to say “you will know them by their fruit”. Remember Paul stopped killing and persecuting people after his conversion. Yep I understand the pagans fear but not the wrong turns made by the leadership within a few centuries. Many will say did we not do these things in Your name comes to mind. Anyway I’m rambling. First, you must understand that in LDS ecclesiology, an Apostle and a Bishop are two different things, and that Bishops have less power than Apostles.
The Apostles were killed off or “died,” and couldn’t regroup to find replacements like they could in Acts 1. As such, their specific powers (such as receiving revelation to guide the entire church) went with them.
Surviving Bishops and others still had the ability and authority to officiate the Priesthood, but as for conferring the Priesthood onto others, I wouldn’t exactly know how that would work.
The overall point I’m trying to make is that the loss of certain facets of the priesthood wasn’t a sudden event, but it was detrimental.

    • @ipercalisse579

@@samsam-ko3fp Not actually. Sacrificing to gods was a political act not an act of faith. Roman's just wanted the country to stay in peace and septs, Christian one among them, not to become too violent and intolerant. It's like, trying to maintain order in a mental asylum, so to say. Christians were reported to act crazy, both by the Roman's and their own testimonies. Offering to the gods meant that you accept to be a part of the whole, not to renounce to your god, or gods, by accepting that there are also other gods, and culture, and THIS Christians didn't, because they were inspired by the martyrdom and so engaged in that and the promise of the afterlife that they insisted to be executed. To make it simple, it is not very different from una-bomber of sharia or kamikazes.... just they were Christians.

Well I should have expected this content by a Christian channel. Your informations are based on assumptions and not on historical facts. Also you seem not knowing much of the Roman world and culture to talk about it. The all thing with Christians persecution on a large scale was made up by Christians way after those time. But let's make things clearer: 1. Roman culture was polytheistic, not "pagan", pagan is a disrespectful word used by Christians for the worshippers of many deities after they became the state religion (after Constantine).
    2. Roman religion had an impact on their culture, it was important in a cultural way, but it was not AND IT NEVER WAS a fundamentalist faith. I won't explain how Romans religion was observed in their daily basis, but it was basically paying homage and respect to one god, or another, or the ancestors spirits, said Mani, in other to get healthier or luckier, to get help, to promote peace or win a battle. Romans were refined and cultivated people, philosophy, science, medicine and arts were as much part of their culture as religion was, if not more. Their knowledge, research of a variety of topics as long as openness and promoting of culture was well documented, and in the words of Romans themselves you can see that they weren't that much obsessed by religion, as you'd like them to be. When Romans established in one foreign country after a campaign, they allowed people to maintain their religion, whatever it was. The whole thing about offering to their gods was a political act of submission more than a faith one. There was a pantheon and it was open for submission, so to say. They didn't want you to abandon the Crossed-one-guy for Proserpina, or Mercury, they didn't force you to call Crossed-one-guy another name, nor making you swear that you believe in other deities, or that they were better than the one you choose. They just wanted you to pay RESPECT to another culture, which was the government one, so in a position of political privilege, making an offer to their religion. This was an important act of recognition and respect of not just the Romans but other cultures too. Getting along peacefully together and not engage in intolerant behavior on a matter of religion and faith was the Roman basis, their interests were way beyond faith, they were just political!
In Judea Romans didn't understand why Christians didn't want to do these offerings. Chronicles reports about Roman governors who tried not to execute Christians being understanding, even allowing them not to pay the offer, but just using a formula. They didn't understand while in this pantheon Jew's god YWEH was present and Jews were ok. Why the crossed-one-guy, who was his claimed son on earth, couldn't be there too? To Romans this was inconceivable. They tried to reason with Christians but they were not reasoning. Because in fact there wasn't much reason among those people. They were inspired by martyrdom. THEY WERE THE ONE who didn't want to respect other cultures and traditions. They were fundamentalists and not so much later did vandalise, prevaricate, tortured and forced men and women to bow to THEIR GOD and abandon their religion, both physically and mentally. And this is a fact.
    3. The way you ridiculed the "pagan" culture making those funny sketches at the beguinning is a direct proof of what I'm talking about.

i would like to say something on this from what i understand about history, economics and religion. let me know if you think it is valid.
what caused the fall of rome was artificially low interest rates to facilitate credit expansion/ currency devaluation and this was bought about by christian orthodoxy where they believe interest rates are "evil". the way interest rates work is if you cannot produce the return from your investments that is able to support society, you get paid interest for depositing this money in the bank (say 5-10%) and this means instead of buying unproductive assets that produce say, a 1% rate of return due to lacking the ability to use them properly the real land and assets are kept in productive hands. if interest rates are 0% and i can make 1% return by buying land and using it badly then i will buy it, if there are people who can make 15% profit though it is better for everybody to pay me 10% for keeping my money in the bank to disincentives me to buy that land.
as interest rates fall and currency devaluation happens, the welfare state attracts parasites, just as the west is doing today and assets come to be less and less productive over time, falling short of the needs of the citizens. the low interest rates lead to trade deficits, exporting inflation and capital flight- where companies reinvest into countries with higher interest rates because this allows them to expand, due to the prices of the asset and the prices of what the asset produces coming closer and closer together, the higher the interest rates are and further and further apart the lower they go, causing stagnation. if the west today was not running trade deficits, quality of life would fall to be lower than it was 100's of years ago and the quality of life we do have via deficits is living on borrowed time, while preventing the forces that would reverse this trend.
the larger a population becomes, the higher the interest rates should go in order to facilitate the increased productivity needed over time.

I'm not sure Ancient Rome had a robust financial system as today, however, if they did then they would have a wonderful understanding of inflation. They didn't.
Monetary economics doesn't work out either because you know they had bullion. The Romans had trade but they had no need to practice mercantilism. They just needed Egyptian grain to feed their people.
Also comparing an ancient state to a modern economy is laughable. Rome does not have the rights and protections a modern republic has today.
