What is the Apocrypha? (And do Latter-day Saints accept it as scripture?) Ep. 167

  • The Apocrypha has been a source of debate between Catholic and Protestant Christians since the days of Martin Luther. But what is the Apocrypha? Why is it controversial? And what do Latter-day Saints have to say on the matter?

    Notes:
    - Latter-day Saint scholar Steven Harper put it well:
“Rather than declaring the highly varied books of the Apocrypha either true or false, the Lord [in D&C 91] focuses on truth and error within the texts. Nor does he seem worried about errors in or sufficiency of scripture, a term Latter-day Saints do not even use, He gives instead an infallible principle that can be applied to all fallible fields and texts, including apocryphal or pseudepigraphal literature as well as science or art. The principle is that the companionship of the infallible Holy Spirit will enlighten and benefit those who seek truth, wherever it may be … this revelation places highest priority not on parsing ancient texts but on each individual’s receptivity to the Godhead through the Holy Ghost.” Source: "Making Sense of the Doctrine and Covenants" by Steven C. Harper, pg. 342.

FYI New Advent is a good online Catholic encyclopedia. And watch among Catholic sources the huge divide between traditionalists and modernists. Those camps can vary widely. I do not believe my Catholic friends refer to the books in their original bible as 'apocrypha' nor deuterocanonical. According to New Advent the latter term was never used until after the Protestants removed those books from the canon. So glad we have modern referee to sort that out. I sincerely believe we Christians have along way to go to LIVE the gospel as contained in whatever version of the Bible you use. I would check out the Orthodox versions as well. Would be helpful if you gave them a shout out as they have been there since the beginning as well.

In Egypt they found a book written by Mary Magdalene, called the Book of Mary. In the book it talks about he the love she shared with Jesus, and that after his death, resurrection, nand departure from the apostles, they were in a depressed state and didn’t know what they should do. Mary says that she took Peter to task because he knew exactly what Jesus had told them to do, and they had best get to it. True or not it makes some sense.

I love reading 1st and 2nd Maccabees and feel that it contains a lot of helpful historical truth. BUT... it shouldn't be regarded as Sacred scripture.
It is very helpful to understand what took place between the Testaments during a time of general apostasy.

He did not complete it; The Community of Christ retain(ed?) copyright status over the JST. For both these reasons, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints treats the JST more as a study guide for the Bible rather than the canonical version of the Bible.

Really the big thing is that’s the first time I’ve even heard about that so it must not be that important but I do think one thing that would be important that people could look at. That would be good. Scripture would be getting some of the old end signs or different works that the prophets have talked over the years and some of the authorities and I think it would be really good.

The deuterocanonical/apocryphal books in no way support the immaculate conception nor magical arts, but 2 Maccabees does present prayers and offerings for the dead which are loosely related to how Catholics interact with the deceased today.
While Jesus does not quote the Apocrypha St. Jude most certainly does with his referencing of 1 Enoch (which was a Biblical book with some weight in the early church for a time).

Great topic, thanks! Joseph Smith also said the Song of Solomon is also not inspired revelation from God and other parts of the Old and New Testament are not true revelations but opinions of man which often time, contradict each other. I wish our prophets could borrow the urim and thumin for a few weeks to comb through ALL of the Bible, and other left-out books of the Bible to get rid of all of the false info and unnecessary stuff.

It was revealed to the prophet Joseph Smith by revelation as he was doing a new translation of the Bible that as you said he did make it known that the Song of Solomon wasn't inspired, but he did not say other parts of the Old and New Testament are not true revelations but opinions of men. He testified that we believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly.
The prophet also testified that many truths pertaining to the doctrine of Christ and the salvation of men had been removed or lost. We do know through the revelation of the Book of Mormon that many plain and precious things were taken out of the Bible as Nephi foresaw. The revelation pertaining to the Apocryphal Books is sufficient for us to understanding that we should study all things by the spirit. Many more fragments of ancient texts are coming forth and they to have the revelations, prophocies and doctrine of God through them. Just as the Psalmist said, "truth shall spring forth out of the earth." that was a prophocy of the coming for of the Book of Mormon primarily and also alluding to these other ancient though fragments of texts that are the words of God.
